A Message from your Principal….
Dear Parents and Friends of Redwood School,
It is hard to believe that we are a month into the 2014-2015 school year. A new school year presents opportunities
for various beginnings- new classes, new faces, and new material. It is a pleasure to be your principal and I
welcome you to a new school year!
Our first PTA meeting was held on Wednesday, September 3rd
in the cafeteria. A special thanks to all the
members and committee heads of PTA. Thanks for the countless hours of hard work from everyone. I hope that
families new to Redwood will join our PTA, support our school, and become a part of the positive energy that
supports our children in so many ways.
Our school calendar is full of fantastic opportunities and experiences for the students of Redwood. We have
several ways to learn and know about upcoming events at Redwood: 1) This calendar can be found at www.avonlakecityschools.org/redwood and just click on the Parent or Student Tab
and click School Forms. 2) It can also be found on GBW. 3) I will periodically be posting things about Redwood on my Twitter account so you can follow me @tjebert. 4) You can also get information on Facebook at the Redwood PTA page. 5) You can download the Redwood App which has a calendar of events and other important information
This is a reminder that picture day will be on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Picture packet information was sent
home.
Third grade parents are asked to mark Tuesday, October 7th on their calendar as this is the day students will take
the Ohio Department of Education Reading Achievement Assessment. All students should: 1) Get plenty of rest 2) Eat a healthy breakfast 3) Arrive to school on time
We are confident that all of our students will be successful on this assessment.
The annual Pumpkin Festival will take place on Saturday, October 11th
at Redwood from 11AM-2PM. Finally,
Redwood will have our costume parade and parties on Friday, October 31st in the morning. Parade will start at
about 9:15AM.
We will be scheduling our parent-teacher conferences online, as we did last school year. More information will
be available on how to schedule in the next few weeks. As a reminder conferences are October 15th
and October
16th. There will be an early dismissal at 1:45PM each day. There will be NO school Friday, October 17th
because
of NEOEA day.

Hello Redwood Parents and Guardians!
As I sit down to write this letter, I cannot believe that we are already almost
1 semester into the school year! Where does the time go! For those of you
who do not know me, my name is Nicole Slivinski and I will be the PTA
President at Redwood for the next 2 school years. I have 2 children that
attend Redwood, Olivia who is in 3rd
grade and Chloe who started
Kindergarten. I feel very fortunate that my children attend Redwood and
that I am able to play an active role in the PTA. Redwood truly has an
amazing group of teachers, administrators, parents and of course children!
I was so amazed with the attendance at our September PTA meeting. It was
great seeing so many faces and it excites me that so many of you want to be
a part of PTA, so thank-you. I am looking forward to working with all of
you and welcome any suggestions or ideas that you may have. I can be
contacted at [email protected]. Our next PTA meeting will be held on
October 8th
at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. We will again have Key Club
students available for childcare.
October will bring a lot of excitement, from Homecoming to Pumpkin Fest,
along with our first of three Buffalo Wild Wings dine-in fundraiser.
Pumpkin Fest will be our most lucrative fundraiser for the year and its
success depends on all of you. The dine-in fundraisers are a great, easy way
to earn funds for the school. Remember, the money we raise helps pay for
student assemblies, classroom supplies, new technology initiatives and so
much more.
Did you know Redwood Elementary PTA is on Facebook? I would
encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already. We also have updated
our website, which can be found right on Redwood Elementary Schools
website.
Finally, we are still in need of a few volunteers. If you are interested in
learning more about the open positions, please let me know. I am looking
forward to a great year!
Nicole Slivinski
What’s Happening Around The Gym
Student of the Week-Weekly, one student from each classroom is recognized for responsible behavior.
These students receive a gold medal and certificate, the option to attend an open gym session before school
and the privilege to be the “special helper” during their P.E. class the following week.
Walking Club-Members walk the Redwood indoor walking course during our afterschool program which
starts Tuesday Jan. 13 and ends Tuesday March 17. Each session runs from 3:15-4:00. This year we will be
charting mileage on our huge map of the United States as we try to visit as many of our national parks as
possible. There will be a special culminating activity for walking club members this year called the GLOW
WALK. It will take place at Redwood on Friday March 20th
at 7:00 p.m. Look for more details and sign-up
information in December.
After School Fitness Challenge- Families are encouraged to chart their after school activity. Any activity can
be recorded on the movement log that can be found on our school website. Bike rides, walks, participation at
practices etc. are examples of what can be included in the log. Send the log to school with your child. All
mileage will be recorded and used to help us reach our goal of visiting as many national parks as possible.
The logs will be collected through the end of April.
Jump Rope for Heart-JRFH is scheduled for the week of February 16th
. Each grade level will have a
jumping party during physical education class. This is the 19th
year Redwood has participated in the event
and families are invited to fundraise for the American Heart Association. Prior to the event, students become
more accomplished with their jump rope skills, learn about giving back to the community and better
understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Look for more information to come home at the
beginning of February.
Questions about any of the above activities can be directed to Mrs. Renee Stuart, physical education teacher,
using the e-mail [email protected].

Save The Date…Redwood’s annual Snowflake Shoppe is Wednesday, December 3rd
this year. Our students will be shopping for gifts for family members this day from among
some very creative crafters. Everything will be priced below $5.00 and will be gift
wrapped for free. The kids love this event and we will need a lot of volunteers to help
them pick out just the right gifts. So mark your calendars, more information to come in
November. If you, or someone you know, are interested in being one of our creative
sellers, please contact Lori Howard at 440-666-7289.
October is Cookie Month for Market Day! The more cookies we
order, the greater the profits for Redwood! This is in addition to the
money we already earn from other categories. Stock up for the
holidays or just to have on hand for that last minute party, outing,
tailgate, or afternoon snack! There are many varieties to choose
from. Look for the October flyer to be sent home shortly or you can
always order online. All orders due by Thursday, October 16th and
pick up is Tuesday, October 21. Don't forget you can always
find select items at GFS in case you run out between sales. Market
Day items earn Redwood 5% and all other GFS purchases earn 1%.
Just remember to mention "Redwood" at checkout and our school
earns money! This is a super easy way for you to feed your family
and help out Redwood at the same time! Please consider ordering if
you never have before, and as always, we appreciate return
customers!
Avon Lake Wrestling Club for grades K-6 will be accepting
registration during homecoming festivities October 4th-5th and also
October 16th 6-8 pm at the Avon Lake High School Commons.
