About the AuthorDean Shane CassemBorn in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father fromLebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his firstcue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather beforehim had Cassems restaurant in Kanawha City, asuburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol ofWest Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for ashort stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cuedown and by age 20, had placed second in the annualVirginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and outof the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. Hisstroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected hisgame and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houstonin 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interiorwall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80s, his game wentdormant again until he sold his business and returned to school. At age48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Mastersdegrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. Duringthat time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the mostprolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five CarterKeating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection,Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate inthe bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently createdtwo new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently,Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He andMary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoingCarter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visitShanes web sites at;www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

PART 2In Part One, Friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keating tothe game of pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captivelyas Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in WilliesPool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nineball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off in arage, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat.THE STICK SMIRKED THEN SMILED JUST ENOUGH TO SHOW histoothy grin, and said. Been playing pool since I was bout twelve. Hestared straight ahead as if Id taken him back twenty years and a filmprojector was replaying the frames. Always played pool, far as canremember, kid.

Clearing my throat as if it had a big frog in it, I continued, uhStick, would you teach me how to play pool . . . that is, if I paid for thetime?

Frowning as though Id asked him what color his underwear was,he raised his eyebrows inordinately, thought about what I said then askeddubiously, you ever play the game before?

I shook my head.Never?Nod.Humph, he said. Then canting his head, he added, pay for all

the time?Yeah thats right, I answered quickly. Turning to the large glass

windows, I watched as a streak of lightning flashed across the dark, moonless sky. In the space of that brilliant nanosecond, I saw a hardcold rain slant into the windows. The wetness crawled down thetranslucent glass like gooey globs slithering down a wall. My thoughtswashed back to the day they buried Mama.

When da ya wanta do this, kid? He asked.I pressed my lips together then said, Anytime Im here and youre

not involved in a game.He smiled then nodded. Sure kid, thatd be alright. He eyed me

from head to toe like a coach evaluating his talent. Then he pursed hislips and said, eye-hand coordination helps.

Turning my lip dubiously, I said, played bout everything over atschool.

Uh huh, what day?Tomorrow?Hey Stick! Tools Spinard yelled unexpectedly from across the

room. Tools, a heavy set middle-aged man with a large belly, drove aroundin a Snap-On Tools truck all day. His thin dark hair struggled to cover abald spot on top of his head.

Yeah, Tools, Gadwell barked.Ill take Wakefield, you take the kid n lets play some eight ball,

five bucks a game. His eyes sparkled as his smile turned up his pencil-thin mustache on his plain round face. The half-full beer glass in hishand leaned off-center as his neck craned outward waiting for an answer.

Kid aint never played before, Tools! Gadwell chimed back.Tools paused then said, He makes three in a row, we give you

the game. The Stick looked at me then Wakefield then back to me. Play

some pool, kid?For a moment I didnt say anything. Come on, kid, he

encouraged, well give it a shot.I sighed and nodded okay.Gadwells tall, curly-haired forehead bunched in the middle. His

eyes narrowed and peered into mine. Then he laughed and shook hishead as though hed just got the punch line to a joke. Looking up toSpinard, he yelled, Hey Tools!

Tools, chatting aimlessly with three friends, looked up. Yeah,Stick.

The kid and Ill take you on, he yelled back. Then turning, heyelled to Eddy Cooksey the rack boy. Eddy, my man. Rackem! Eightball on table eight!

Hair-lipped, skinny and disheveled, Eddy Cooksey raced acrossthe room with a wooden rack around his neck. He pulled the rack overhis head, flipped it down to the table and started racking the balls. Hisunshaven face covered a strongly protruding chin that hovered over awrinkled plaid shirt that hung loose to his waist. Ragged tennis shoeswere dirty and partially unlaced.

The Stick looked at me and said, Kid, grab a stick, were gonnaplay some pool.

As Cooksey thumbed fifteen balls into the rack with the eight ballin the middle then raced off to the next table, I sauntered up to the wallrack and inspected the regiment of cue sticks. I picked out the first one Isaw, pulled it into my hands then ran it through my fingers as if I knewwhat I was doing.

This game shouldnt be too difficult.

In My Opinion ... by: Don Cheese Akerlow

I wonder why pool players go against the grain most every time? Theydont get help. If you were studying the martial arts youd have a sensei, you would have someone teaching you the craft. If you played golf, youwould have somebody help you with your swing, with your approach shot, your putting, at least to help you become better than what you are. Ifyouve played any sports you know you have a coach. He teaches you,he shows you, makes you practice and do drills that will help you in thelong run. Not so with the average pool player, not so with most poolplayers. It seems to be, in my opinion, an ego thing. For some reason, if we askfor help or go to a billiard school, to have lessons, somehow, we areadmitting that we dont know enough about the game. Were not goodenough, or even worse because somebody is better than us, and godonly knows that nobody can be better than we are. This phenomenonseems to stretch across all classes of pool players, whether its averagebarroom pokers or top players. They will practice the drills at times, notthe shots that they have a hard time doing or to remember the Englishand how it takes and where it goes, but they dont get instructions, andIm talking about most. There are exceptions of course and those playersare to be applauded. In my opinion, in order for your game to get better you have to findsomeone, first that you trust, someone that has accomplished winning, whether its in a local tournament, regional or national. Someone whohas been there, done that, been in pressure situations, in the finals. Beingable to know the mental game is 80-90% of how good you shoot.Experience they say is the best teacher. This is true but in order to havequality experience you must practice. In order to practice you must havesomeone show you or tell you what you are doing incorrectly.Old habits are hard to break, whether its with your swing, whether itswith your stance, whether its your mental game or whether its how youapproach the table, what your routine is, whether its the way you strokeyour cue, or whether its how you hit, whether you stand up. There arenumerous things that can go wrong in your game. Weve all experiencedthose, so practice, with a qualified instructor or drills. Its not a guarantee, but its a start and in my opinion you may need to use more than oneinstructor. Instructors are human beings and some have strengths in onearea or another. You may find that going to another instructor will helpyou in your game even more. Let me know. OTB

Keep Strokin, Sarge

Here is a trick shot that you dont see inmany exhibitions because it has a lowpercentage make rate on the first try, unless the shot has been pre-set beforethe show. This shot is designed for a nine foot table. You start by racking a full set of balls. Youthen remove the front three balls from therack and place the balls as shown. Objectball A should be aimed in the direction ofthe dotted line for the right corner of thepocket. Using a hard stroke shoot into theobject ball as diagrammed. Ball X willcarom off of ball A last and be guided tothe far corner pocket following the solidblack line. If ball X doesnt go, adjust ballA until the proper carom is achieved. Bepatient and enjoy this shot.

14:1 Continuous Pool Tournament - June 8, 2002Something new and different made its appearance at the Eagles Club inBozeman, MT. On Saturday June 8th, we had a 14:1 Continuous PoolTournament (Straight Pool). The idea behind this tournament was to give the tournament players inthis area a new and different game to play, something besides 8-Ball or9-Ball. The players liked it so much that we will be doing anothertournament Saturday September 21, 2002 and then another one onSaturday June 14, 2003.1st $150-split Jeff Boucher, Helena, MT2nd $150-split Leroy Dorsey, Seattle, WA3rd $70 Steve Spritzer, Bozeman, MT4th $40 Scott Lee, Bozeman, MT5/6 $20 Andy Martin, Bozeman, MT

Chip Pool Classic - June 22, 2002Final standing for the Chip Pool Classic held at the Eagles Club #326,Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was held Saturday June 22, 2002with a field of 22 players.A special thank you goes out to all the players that showed up, Scott Leefor the helping hand, and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a ChipPool Tournament is in the February issue of On The Break, I will quicklyexplain it to you.The game is 8-Ball singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee, you receive5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutalgame). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and waitfor your next opponent. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips tothe tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the player with any chips left.We pay down half the field. This makes even us average pool playersfeel good about receiving some of the prize money.1st $115 Curt Watts, Bozeman, MT2nd $90 Scott Lee, Bozeman, MT3rd $70 Rich Robinson, Three Forks, MT4th $50 Andy Martin, Bozeman, MT5th $30 Steve Spritzer, Bozeman, MT6th $20 Walt Nead, Livingston, MT7th $15 Mike Schaff, Bozeman, MT8th $10 Shawn Spence, Belgrade, MT9th $10 Miral Gamradt, Bozeman, MT10th $10 Vaughn Everly, Belgrade, MT11th $10 Lee Hedglin, Bozeman, MTAgain, I want to thank all the players that showed up. Dog DaysLong, hot August days. Dog days of summer. The long-awaitedheat making us want to lay around snoozing, hopefully without

our tongues hanging out We associate so manythings with our furry best friends, the four-leggedones, I mean! Run with the Big Dogs; in August, even the Big Dogs are on the porch. Dogged theshot; just cannot seem to get onto the origin ofthat one? (if you have any ideas on this one, email me (really): [email protected].)Doggedly pursued the win; we have all been there.

In the doghouse; we wont even GO there! Hairof the dog not a pool player around who knows

what THAT is yeah, sure. Dog tired; after all, it is soooo hardchasing butterflies and sleeping all day - must be a musher thing.Up to our knees in well, never mind that one. Meaner than ajunkyard dog never in reference to a poolplayer, of course.Found you like a bloodhound; sometimes good, sometimes not sogood!Have you ever wondered why there are so many associationsrelated to animals in our conversations? Sharks, dogs, turkeys, chickens. Maybe poolplayers are just naturally more visual.Maybe we are saying that WE are animals at the pool table!Maybe we are saying that we do not have to be verbally capableto whup em like an orphan step-dog, I mean child. Maybe wejust LIKE sharks, dogs, turkeys and chickens. Who knows? And,I am sure, at this point, who really cares?

Happy Summer, players tournament season is getting closer!

It fits on your cue neatly. A questionyou probably have asked yourselfmany times, Why cant I getthere? I cant get up highenough. I cant get long enough. The BRIDGEJACK gets you thereevery time. Using theBRIDGEJACK four inches behindthe bridge head allows you theelevation that you need to get tothe cue ball to make your shot.Once you have it on you just slideit until it fits snug. Holding the legsof the BRIDGEJACK down toextend the bridge up & over anyinterfering balls allowing you toexecute your shot. TheBRIDGEJACK is made in theUnited States of America of high

impact polymer and stainless steel with a self locking position on your cue. Now those shots that seem impossibleto get to, whether youre trying to get your cue behind your back, over your head, under your leg or justanywhere it just cant fit. These shots now become possible with the BRIDGEJACK. It allows you to improveyour aim but its small enough to fit in your pocket or cue case. The BRIDGEJACK clips onto any bridge shaft the further back you slide it the more balls you can clear, thusbeing able to reach the cue ball in order to make your shot. A must have for your arsenal. For more information contact Herbert Morton toll free at 1-800-405-6548,e-mail: [email protected] or visit his website at: www.bridgejack.com.

Have you ever had a shot that you justcouldnt get there from here? TheBRIDGEJACK gets you there every time.

Finally, the genius of improving the players break shotcomes to life in this unique product. The BreakRAK revealsthe subtle and sometimes major glitches in the most criticalstroke in pool. I firmly believe a few minutes spent with theBreakRAK will elevate any persons break shot to anotherlevel and beyond. I highly recommend it as the perfecttraining tool for break shot practice, as it creates a caddyassistant. The BreakRAK is consistent in response andallows for adjustment in a fluent and rhythmic motion.

by: Heather BarkleyJuly 11 14, 2002Another fantastic WPBA Amateur Nationals event washosted by Doug & June Murphy of Murphys Brass Rail inAthens, Georgia and co-sponsored by Iwan Simonis Cloth. This was the second year Murphys hosted the NationalAmateur tournament. This year they kicked things offThursday evening with a HUGE charity Pro/Am event to

benefit localplayer, BobDavis. Theevent raisedover $2000.00toward hism o u n t i n gmedical bills.Jeannette Lee,Allison Fisher,Ewa Laurance,B e l i n d aC a m p o s ,Monica Webb,H e l e n aT h o r n f e l d t ,Tiffany Nelson,and TommyKennedy madeg u e s tappearancesand performedtheir favoritetrick shots. Aspecial guestappearance byseven year old

Landon Shuffett was also part of the evenings attraction. After the players autographed anything and everything fanshanded them they proceeded to challenge their fans to aquick game of nine-ball. Spectators looked on withamazement at the talent that was displayed throughout theevening. As the weekend unfolded, ladies from 22 states and 2 othercountries (Austria and Canada) gathered to compete for theNational Amateur title. The tournament drew many playersfrom the WPBA Sanctioned Regional Tours.Representatives from the following tours attended TheCAT Tour (Chesapeake Area Tour); SEAL Tour (SoutheastAmateur Ladies Tour); NEWT Tour (Northeast WomensTour); NWPA Tour (Northwest Womens Pool Association);Hunter Tour; AWBT (Arizona Womens Billiard Tour); withthe Ladies Spirit Tour from Florida having the largest showingof 12 members.Co-directors Peg Ledman & Heather Barkley kicked off themain event Friday morning with the players meeting anddraw. The 71 players began their battle for the right toproceed to the next days competition; dwindling down to 48players by Saturday morning. As some of the best amateurlady players in the country where slowly eliminated, the 14nine-foot Brunswick Gold Crown IV tables came alive asthe inspired spectators got their opportunity to pit their skillsagainst the lady amateurs Saturday evening in some friendlycompetition. The final 8 players returned on Sunday to acrowd of knowledgeable onlookers. The match-ups includedJeannie Seaver vs Gina Kim-Lipsky; and Helene Caukin vsKelly Willis, on the one-loss side; and Michelle Allen vs

Renee Salvi; and Jasmin Ouschan vs Pam Bell on thewinners side. The skill was at such a high level that noplayer was eliminated on Sunday in the first round of playby a score of less that 7-4. First round action eliminatedKim-Lipsky and Willis finishing tied for 7/8th .In round two a miscue and some untimely misses said good-bye to strong player Pam Bell and Helene Caukin was alsoeliminated to finish in a tie for 5-6th place. The Queen of theHill match saw some excellent safety play and miraculouskick shots by both players with 16 year old Austrian-bornJasmin Ouchsan sending Renee Salvi to the one-loss sideto wait for an opponent. Jeannie Seaver defeated MichelleAllen 7-5, for fourth place. Seaver moved to the semi-finalsto play Salvi for a shot at the title. Seaver advanced to thefinals by defeating Salvi 7-2 as Salvi had to settle for a 3rd

place.By reaching the finals, both players knew they had securedan invitation to the WPBA National Championships, hostedby the Miccosukee Resort and Gaming in Miami FloridaDecember 4th 8th. Now they turned their focus to the taskat hand, winning the title of 2002 Amateur NationalsChampion. As the final one race to 9 match unfolded Seaverwon the lag. The players volley back and forth trading racks, with the score tied 5-5 Ouschan misses a seven nine comboto let Seaver back to the table. Seaver misses a long shotto allow Ouschan to gain a 6-5 lead. In the next rack Ouschanmisses a tough 3 ball to give Seaver ball in hand to again tiethe score 6-6. A tough safety battle begins the 13th game,Ouschan prevails winning that rack and the 14th rack to jumpout to the first two game leadof the match, 8-6. Throughthe course of the 15th gameSeaver sits in her chairanxiously awaiting a returnvisit to the table, only toobserve the 16 year oldJasmin Oschan running outthe final rack to become the2002 Amateur NationalChampion. A great match bya couple of young talentedplayers well be seeing asregulars on the pro tour realsoon!Again we would like to thank all the players for attendingand supporting the 2002 WPBA Amateur Nationals, alongwith Iwan Simonis Cloth and all the folks at Murphys BrassRail.Tournament Results1 $1,750 Jasmin Ouschan

WPBA2002 Amateur Nationals

by: Cindy Doty The Amateur Nationals.... What a fun and excitingtournament...You see and play the best of the best amateursand semi-pros in the country and at times, other countries.71 players attended at Murphys Brass Rail in Athens,Georgia. Guess who was there trying hard to show theirstuff? ... Martha Hartsell (33rd), Jo Woodward (25th), AndreaSaenz-Maes (49th), and myself, Cindy Doty (13th). Wewished we could have done a little better, but we had afabulous time. We got to watch the top players from each regional tourfrom all over the states and Austria compete for the 2 paidspots to the WPBA Pro event. It was a real treat to knowthat if we work a little harder, we could be right there...The

room was very nice with wonderful service and great food. The owners had specials and raffles going all the time. So,if you didnt do well in the tournament, you had a chance towin some wonderful things including a couple of pool sticksthey raffled. The WPBA gave away posters of the top rankingpros and a T-shirt with the same picture on it, along withMurphys, who also gave us on of their tt-shirts. If you gottired of watching pool, you could get a few autographs...suchas..Jeanette Lee..Helena Thornfeldt...Monica Webb...AllisonFisher...Peg Ledman...Kelly OYama...We even got to watchAllison give a pool lesson. Coooolll... The worst thing (of course) about the whole thing wasthe long flight...then when you get to Atlanta you have todrive 1 1/2 hrs to Athens .. We got there at 2am. It took mea week to catch up with my sleep .. Oh well ... It was worth it. I hope to see more players from our area next year .. Itwas an extremely fun tournament and a very realistic onefor a lot of players in our Northwest area. I came home witha lot of physical and mental work to practice on. Till nexttime ... Cindy

THE FIRST SHOT I TOOK WAS A STRAIGHT IN on the six in the cornerpocket. Before I actually set myself, I suddenly felt a nervous rush comeover me. With sweaty palms and trembling hands, I set myself awkwardly, miscued and missed the shot completely. My second shot was a potentialgame winner on the three that sat dead at the door of the left side pocket.Determined, I balanced the cue stick on my thumb then jerked the stickand my body forward. The stick slipped off my thumb and committedanother foul.

Good God, Keating, Gadwell bellowed disbelievingly.I shrugged and looked around the room. Each patron I looked at

either grinned or shook his head as though I was the class clown anddoing a lousy job of it.

This is not the basketball court, Keating, or the baseball field,Wakefield jibed. Star athlete might oughta go home and see if he canlearn how to hold a cue stick.

Everybody laughed.Embarrassed, I stared at the ceiling fan as it wobbled and turned

just enough to circulate the air. I shifted my eyes outside. The drivingrain kept slanting into the windows as a harsh wind whooshed solidlyagainst the glass. The weather the day of Mamas funeral was similar. Iwondered how my sister and little brother were doing.

One hour later, I had still had not made a shot. Worse yet, I hadmissed two more dead winners.

I felt alone, as though the whole world had deserted me. Inside,my guts tossed and turned. The agony of failing in front of such a largegroup of people and not competing stirred my emotions in a way that hadme crying inside.

Tools Spinard yelled out so that the whole place heard, Keating, boy! Anytime ya want to play me for a buck or two, let me know. Mypocket books already salivating.

Everybody hooted and howled. Inside, my blood heated up somemore, my face constricted.

Might ought to try croquet, Spinard scowled, shaking his head,as though Id broken the record for ineptness. Grinning, he turned awayfrom me to keep from laughing some more.

Inside, I cried some more. To make matters worse, at gamesend, I missed another shot that would have won the game. Gadwell, thoroughly upset, slammed the butt of his stick on the floor and gesturedthat hed had enough.

No sense throwin away good money after bad, he raged, thenbroke down his cue and stomped off to the mens room. I was alone inthe corner. After a few moments he returned, came over and sat downbeside me and asked, Still want to do this, kid?

I winced, then narrowed my eyes angrily and nodded slowly withoutsaying anything.

Gadwell snapped, Your money, kid. And got up and walked out, shaking his head, laughing.Inside, I made a promise to myself. I swore the day would come whenthey would no longer laugh. No. More than that.

Medford, OregonAll totaled, CB shot 878 games losing on 18 to scratches. People 18 andover would donate a dollar to the Shriners and if they won CB they would

receive a $10gift certificate toa localrestaurant intown.C h i l d r e nd o n a t e d50cents to playagainst CB orwith therefriends or withone of ourworkers. Wehad childrencome to usfrom all overthe fair wanting

to learn how to shoot pool and even had some ask if we would start aPool League for them...so you can imagine the amount of 4-H, FFA andjust kicking around kids that we had. (We will be looking into setting up aChildrens Pool League after we recuperate from the next fair that wedo.)On Sunday, which was thelast day of the fair, we had aTournament for the kids. 8kids signed up and each oneof them received a gift forattending. The 1st place wasSamantha, age 17 (or Samshe liked to be known as) andthen Lauren took 2nd place.Lauren had never even helda pool cue until meeting CBand his crew on the first dayof the fair. Not to shabby huh!CB and his crew raised a little over $1,000 and presented it to them thismorning at a local breakfast meeting. This was probably the biggest hit of the fair with temperatures going upinto 102. We were asked to set this up and do it for the neighboring townof Grants Pass for the Shrine group there also. The Josephine CountyFair in Grants Pass begins on August 13th and ends on 17th. And yes...CBaccepted the invitation to do it all over again in 3 weeks! So once again..I guess we will see ya at the fair!

tournaments in the Northwestbecause I get to know and meetsome of the players, meet up withold friends that I have madethroughout the years, and thistournament was no exception. Ilike to get to know people whohave been reading On The Breakfor a long time, listening to theircomments and what they likeabout the pool paper.Mike Caillier, the tournamentdirector ran a smooth tournamentthroughoutthe first dayand most ofthe second. As in alltournamentsthere isa l w a y s

some controversy from someone that plays. Thefour finalists were Dan Louie, Rich Geiler, StanTourangeau and Raphael Martinez. Raphael wonthe point in easy fashion and was so smooth as heshot. The first match of the four was between RichGeiler and Dan Louie. Strategy was a part of thegame, run out, and these guys dont seem to miss.Rich Geiler won that match which pitted him up against Stan. StanTourangeau being from Alberta, Canada and Rich being a local player, the match went down tight and Rich was the victor. This pitted him againstRaphael in the finals. Rich had to come back and beat him twice. Hewon the first match, somebody in the crowd said Rich is playing like hedid twenty years ago. A crowd of over 80 onlookers watched thetournament and they were treated to one of the best displays of the artof pool. The controversy that arose and was the only trouble of the tournamentor any controversial part of the tournament was going to the bathroom,

breaking in between games, which seemed to annoy the opponent. Thiscould have been used as a strategy to throw your opponent out of stroke, but more likely than not its more to get yourself together and back intostroke. Get your head together, talk to yourself and get in your game. Buttempers did flare. Rich is a good showman and he plays to the crowd. Hehad the crowd amused and laughing throughout the finals. Thecontroversy that did arise finally was perhaps a little bit on more the playfulside than it was an intentional hex or strategy to try to do anything otherthan just play. There was a verbal altercation and if anybody wasntwatching the tournament they came to see what was going on. MikeCaillier, tournament director, handled this swiftly and correctly. He warnedthe players and even though both were perhaps not inclined to acceptexplanation from the other, they would have to for the tournament was at

stake. Play resumed without any further altercationbetween the two. The only other thing that came upwas how the rack was being racked by the opponent, therefore an unbiased racker was appointed and playcontinued. Good job Mike! Way to go on your firsttournament to create a pleasant and enjoyabletournament.Raphael cameback to win topprize on his swingthrough thePacific and theNorthwest.I stayed to theend, it was close

to ten oclock at night on Sunday. I wantto take this time to thank Mike and Lisaof City Lights for having me there tocover the tournament, as well as all theplayers that Ive known in the pastyears and the new friends that I havemade. And thanks for your support ofOn The Break.

America was putting on a Challenge of the Stars Benefit, a Whos Whoof pool players. The event lasted until about ten oclock.Thursday was the first day of the show which started at 10 am. I was upand ready to go early, down to the trade show by the time it opened, wentin, checked in and got in line and headed into the exhibition hall. I stoppedby the BCA booth, talked to Amy Long and John Lewis, then went aroundto the various exhibits to see what was new. I ran into people Ive seenfrom previous tradeshows, Tom DrCue Rossman, who was justrecently in theNorthwest this pastspring and JasonBowman with theA m e r i c a nP o o l p l a y e r sAssociation (APA).Steve Mizerakstopped by and shota few games on theDiamond Table thatAPA had displayed.I had a chance totalk with the Mizand he is recovering well from his stroke. It was good to see him shootingagain. The show itself was a magnificent creation of glitter and glamour, bells

and whistles and all thenew products, everything put togetherin exciting displays. The trade show layoutwas done very well withall the big tablemanufacturers, as wellas cue dealersthroughout. There werebar accessories, stools, benches and games, enough to keepeverybody busy witheverything that theymay want to do withpool or billiards. I metwith a lot of the dealersfrom various parts ofthe country and wasable to talk to them

about how pool was growing in their particular part of the world.I believe that the traffic on the floor was down. Some people had opinionson that but the general consensus was because it was not in Las Vegas. There is a certain lure to the town that never sleeps. The town thatsalways open, the nightlife, the shows and the BCA trade show will returnto Las Vegas next year. One of the best new products on the market was the Pool Shark Case, made out of different types of wood (tiger wood, boa wood, etc.) andcreated by Mel Larsen. It will be in the Product Review section inSeptember s paper. These cases are one ofa kind. As Mel said, hemay make up to ahundred of eachparticular kind but willalso do special orders. They are spendy, but theuniqueness isextraordinary. A see tobelieve! There was anappearance also by Raymond Cuelemans playing a match on the exhibitfloor. In the crowd, was one of the best-known authors Robert Byrne, also a BCA Hall of Fame inductee himself. We chatted for a while. I alsohad the pleasure of meeting Jeanette Lee, Ewa Mataya Laurence, LoreeJon Jones, and Vivian Villarreal.New Orleans, the land of jazz and Mardi Gras, with its care-free ambiancewas inviting to the visitors here for the Billiard Congress of AmericansTrade Exposition. The city is alive with sights, sounds, perceptions andtastes, where every meal is an event with cajun and Creole cooking andgumbo. I didnt talk to anybody that didnt have a good time, that includedmyself ..

Strickland 2002 HasseroderWorld Pool Champion

(Strickland continued on page 26)

Earl Strickland

Photos and article from: Matchroom Sport

July 13-21, 2002 - Cardiff, WalesEarl the Pearl Strickland, the 41 year-old from Greensboro, NorthCarolina, has won the 2002 Hasseroder World Pool Championship afterbeating Francisco Bustamante 17 - 15 at the Cardiff International Arena. The match was a thriller with neither player being more than three racksahead at any time but it was the Pearl who came on strong down thehome stretch to take the title, histhird WPA World Championship.Bustamante, who had sufferedsevere personal tragedy earlier thisweek, when he learned of thedeath of his baby daughter, leadfor most of the match but Stricklandgamely stuck with him as neitherman could get sufficientmomentum to run racks at a time. The balls so often ran awkwardlyafter the break and there were anincredible four scratches and onejump off the table during the match. The CIA was packed to the raftersfor the eagerly anticipated clashbetween the tourneys two in-formcueman but instead of an explosiverack stringing fest, it turned out to be a cagey tactical battle.Stricklands safety play throughout was exemplary and he escaped fromBustamantes safeties with some quality kick-shots. However, every timeStrickland seized the initiative his ensuing break shot failed to deliver thegoods.Strickland grabbed the initiative when 15 - 13 down and looking in danger,as Bustamante scratched on the break as the pool gods frowned on him. That gave the Pearl the chance he had been praying for and Bustamantenever won another rack. In the next Busta got back to the table but Earlhad too much in the safety department for him.The final two racks of the match saw Strickland complete very difficultrun-outs and when the final 9-ball dropped Earl jumped onto the matchtable and started pumping his fists.Strickland picks up a cheque for $65,000 whilst Bustamante wins $30.000.Tables for the Hasseroder World Pool Championship are provided byBrunswick, cloth by Simonis, balls by Aramith and Predator are the OfficialCues of the Championship. The events official bookmaker is Stan James. The Championship is sanctioned by the World Pool Association.

Earl the Pearl; Im Proud of MyselfEarl Strickland, never short of a word or two, was in effusive mood as hetalked about his third WPA World Championship win. Addressing thepost match press conference, Earl covered all aspects of the match;Boy, when he had me 11 - 8 I was starting to get worried but I wasalways thinking that if I can get a roll, then I can get in it. I also knew thatif he hit me with a three or four rack package, it would be all over. The breaks were going all over the place and I changed my break cueduring the match. Francisco was making the cue ball work for him morethan me and I certainly took my eye off the ball when it flew off the table.Throughout the match my safety game was ideal though, very good. Ithought I kicked very well too. I was a little fortunate at times but youvegot to know when to kick hard and when to kick easy.I didnt watch when Bustamante was at the table, I just covered my eyesand tried to stay composed. When I was watching I was trying to wishhim to make a mistake but when you watch it never works. But every time I got back to the table for a shot I got out, but I reallybelieve that the key to victory was that he didnt hit me with somethinglarge. That was the key.I played some quality outs - at 10 - 7 down in particular. Tell me how bigthat was? At 15 - 15 I almost didnt get out there and the pressure wasunbelievable but I was thanking the Lord that he didnt hit me with abarrage especially when I was 11 - 8 down.Every game I won when I was behind was critical and I played very wellin tough situations. In the last rack I had a scary shot on the 2-ball.I wanted to play a safety and I normally dont think too long but theseguys are the greatest kickers in the world and I could lose the match if theshot wasnt perfect. So in the end I thought that if I can pocket it, I canwin.I didnt sleep well last night, maybe four or five hours and I felt a littlegroggy today. This afternoon, I watched the Open on TV, lazed aroundand rested. I ate five hours or so before the match because I wanted tobe a hungry fighter. At 41 I may not get that many chances at big tournaments like thisbecause this is the greatest title you can win in the billiard world.

Moderate cut shots Having the ability to make thin cut shots is great, but the real meat and potatoes of NINE-BALL are cut shots from zero toabout 20 degrees. These cut shots are fairly easy to make and offer thegreatest possibility ofmoving the cue ball forshape on the next shot.Since you are intentionallytrying to get these cutshots (for positionpotential) you better beprepared to make themwhen you get them. The diagram shows aseries of shots that havea moderate cut angle.Place an object ball one diamond from the side rail and two diamondsfrom the end rail as shown. Start with the cue ball on the center spot(position 5). This shot is straight in (0 cut angle) but a one or two degreecut can be manufactured by cheating the pocket. After pocketing theobject ball from position 5 move the cue ball to position 6, which is oneball diameter from position 5, and shoot until you make the object ball.Continue through position 10. Then shoot from positions 4 through 1. Ingoing from position 4 through 1 the cut angle increases at a slower ratebut the shots are a little longer.Once the object ball can confidently be pocketed from each position, repeat the exercise using English. Vary the type and amount of Englishfor each shot. Place a target tissue on the table and try to stop the cueball on the tissue from each cue-ball position.Thin cut shots Having the ability to make thin cut shots (high cut angle),provides yet another tool in getting out of difficult situations. Practicingthin cut shots not only builds a proficiency at thin cut shots but it alsomakes average cut shots seem easier. Most thin cut shots are missed by hitting the object ball too thick (notcutting enough). This is caused by a psychological tendency of not wantingto completely miss the object ball. In NINE-BALL this is good, becausemissing the object ball is a foul.Cut shots approaching 90 degrees can theoretically be made. The problemwith extremely thin cuts is that there is a chance that the object ball willbe missed. And even if youhit the object ball it wontmove very far. Whenshooting as hard as ispractical the object ball willmove only a few inches ata cut angle of 85 degrees. For a cut shot of 80degrees the object ball willmove a maximum of aboutfour feet.Note: It is physicallyimpossible to cut an object ball more than 90 degrees when normal cutshot techniques are used. However, it is possible to cut an object morethan 90 degrees if the cue ball is made to jump up and land on the farside of the object ball. The diagram above shows a series of thin cut shots into a corner pocket. An object ball is placed on the foot string one diamond from the side rail. The cue ball is placed one diamond from the opposite side rail. The variousplacements for the cue ball are shown in figure 16-3 along with the cutangle for each position. The indicated cut angle is accurate for a 50-inchtable (with tight pockets) on a smaller table the cut angle would be slightlygreater for positions 1 through 5 and slightly less for positions 6 through10.Cutting the object ball into the pocket from cue-ball position 1 is extremelydifficult. The cut angle is 83 degrees which means the cue ball must bestruck extremely hard to make the object ball roll all the way to the pocket. But, because the shot borders on impossible, practicing to make it is areal challenge. From cue-ball position 2, the cut angle is 78 degrees;therefore, the shot can be made. From position 4 the cut angle is 67degrees and a good shooter should make it about 50 percent of the time. The diagram below shows a series of thin cut shots down the rail. Itsimportant to practice these shots so that you feel confident when you

have to shoot themduring a competitivegame. It would appear that theshots, from cue ballpositions 1 to 3, couldntbe made because the cutangle is greater than 90degrees. Actually theseshots can be made byusing maximum rightEnglish and missing the

object ball slightly to the left. The cue-ball rebounds off the cushion andinto the object ball propelling it down the rail. When it runs into the objectball (actually from the other direction) the cut angle is less than 90 degrees.

2nd Annual

This is a Q-Stick Production

A special thanks and congratulations go to tournament directors JR Mailo(team events) and Don Crepeau (singles) who kept the weekend runningwith precision, professionalism, and courtesy. Between them, theydemonstrated how even a large tournament can run smoothly, and theircontribution to the successful weekend was invaluable. The TAP Players also deserve credit, not only for the excellent level ofskill that earned their positions in Titleholders, but also for the good sportsmanship andenthusiasm through the weekend. The focuswas not only to win, but also to see who couldhave the most fun over the weekend.Even the fact that it was our first non-smokingvenue only brought a minimum ofcomplaining, which quickly dissipated. TheCasino provided plenty of smoking areaswithin sight and earshot of the podium, andthe players adapted to the new system quicklyand graciously. By the end of the evening, even the smokers appreciated the clear air inthe hall. (After all the smoking/non-smokingcontroversy Ive been reading about, it was asurprise to see what a non-issue it was.)The growth of TAP in western Washington has considerably increasedthe level of skill and talent of the participating players. There were nomatches easily won. Every participating team had already placed 1st, 2nd

or 3rd in their local division, so it was truly a tournament of winners.Congratulations to the teams that fought their way to the top:In the First Place teams bracket

Speed Pool Recordfrom: Steve ShamashSpeed pool is an extraordinary combination of skill, stamina and concentration. The player must not only pocket balls but he has the added pressure of a timelimit. Of the various versions, the most difficult has to be the 24 hour one. Thecurrent Guinness World Record for balls potted in 24 hours is 16,723 balls wherethe 8 ball is pocketed last in the rack. To break that record, the player mustpocket balls at a blistering pace, on average 1 rack (15 balls) every 75 secondsfor 24 hours non stop. On July 15, 2002, Nick Nikolaidis attempted to break thatrecord but at the 20th hour, exhausted and discouraged, Nick pulled out.I was just missing too many balls Nick said. I worked very hard for this eventand I felt physically in top shape, but the last 4 hours are grueling and by thattime I was already 300 balls behind my pace. If I continued, I wouldve been outof commission for months because thats how long it takes to recover. I wouldvedone it if I was on my pace (for 17,000 balls) but it didnt seem worthwhile toinjure myself for nothing. When asked if he will try again Nick replied, I feel that Ive let down my teamand supporters and sponsors but I have to consider my options and I also haveto figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.Anyone can have an off day and we wish Nick all the best in his future endeavors. One week later Nick writes, As you may have seen/read or heard on the news,

my WORLDR E C O R DATTEMPT was notsuccessful.I am currentlyreviewing the tapesto assess theproblems. It has becomeapparent to all that Ican easily attain themark of 17,000 ballsin 24 hours. Therefore I have justbegun preparationfor a second attemptat this mysticalnumber! My reason forp r e m a t u r etermination of myattempt was an easydecision to make. The human body cantake a tremendouspunishment the first

18 - 20 hours with little it no damage what so ever (DEPENDING ON PHYSICALCONDITIONING).Just after I week I can tell you all I am back at full strength, contrary to last yearsattempt where it took me 4 months to recover. This is the difference 4 hours canmake! The figures show that my start (noon - 10 p.m.) was slower than I would haveliked, HOWEVER on the flip side, my last 10 hours (10p.m. - 8 a.m.) wheremuch stronger than my previous attempt. I was on pace to perhaps equal myprevious mark, but this was clearly not what I set out to accomplish. It is therefore official, I WILL MAKE ANOTHER ATTEMPT for all interested inthe details, please e-mail me and I will send you the details when all is completed.Thank you, Nick NikolaidisP.S. I also made a BOLD statement that my intentions are to become theundisputed fastest poolplayer in the world within the next 3 years. If you knowanyone interested in a legitimate challenge let me know. You can email Nick at: [email protected]

champion, there was also $2,600.00 waiting for the winning team to claim. Also equal to the challenge this weekend was the Sure Shots team fromSalem who won the 2nd Place Titleholders and the Just for Fun teamfrom Klamath Falls who won the 3rd Place Titleholders. All of thesewinning teams (that stay active) will automatically be entered in our finaltournament at the end of this summers session to determine which ofthe 6 teams from Oregon will win the free trip to Las Vegas to the TAPNationals in October. In the Singles event Chris Barton from Corvalliswon the 2s, 3s & 4s singles tournament and Jeff Hackinson from Medfordwon the 5s, 6s & 7s. This was the second time that Jeff has won this

very tough single tournament.Great Job Jeff. While it maynot be the richest tournament, the Scotch doubles is by farthe most popular (maybe itsthe free entry) and a bigcongratulations goes to theteam of Bob Cook and ChrisBarton from Corvallis forwinning this sessionstournament by defeating the

team of Jeff Redel and Aaron Propst from Salem. The next session is starting during the month of July. Call 1-877-TAP-POOL and get your team signed up for summer session.

This article is dedicated to ALL the W.S.P.L. players who have gone camping with us over the last3 years!!We took so many pictures, that we really didnt have room to present them all! So, they say onepicture can say 1,000 words! Thatswhy we chose this one. It was actuallytaken on the first campout, andfeatures an eight foot Valley Cougarthat was purchased from City LightsBilliards and moved to the campsite thevery same day of purchase. Iteventually ended up in Bob Salvatisgame room. So we kept it in theW.S.P.L. family!Since then we have had many campingpool tables pass through our hands, and the latest one was just purchasedby Mike Cammilleri who provided theTow Motor and Truck that movedthe 1ST ORIGINAL TABLE. THANKSMIKE Ill bet at the time we first startedthis you didnt know what you started!!The latest campout saw some VERY DEDICATED, happy go lucky player campers, drive all theway to Westport, Washington. The trip is a little over 110 miles, and took place on June 28-30,2002. At first we thought it was going to be a complete RAIN OUT!! But low and behold, not onlydid the player campers, show up Friday night, (and played pool until 4:30 am), but we were overfifty strong by Saturday afternoon. We had our traditional Pot Luck Picnic, (so much food that it felt like THANKSGIVING) on Saturdayevening.Bruce Walsh, Tim Park, Rick Carlson and even Leo Hancock managed to show up and help us setup the tables at the campsite! THANKS Guys without your help it wouldnt have been possible!!!Just in closing let me mention what a great Partying Group we are. Over the two and a half dayevent, they consumed two regular kegs and twelve cases of beer; and that didnt include all of theB.Y.O.B. bottles that we counted when we cleaned up!!YEA, WE DEFINITELY HAD A GOOD TIME!!! THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHOPARTICIPATED AND HELPED!!!PLEASE NOTICE W.S.P.L. PLAYERSThe W.S.P.L.
