Now, how did he do it? How did he manage to beat Shane Van Boening, the man who had beaten 11 champions in a row to arrive at the precipice of his third straight in this event?Well, he kicked in a ball to win the first game. Van Boening won a safety battle to take game 2. Shaw then ran 10 and out after Van Boening broke dry. Van Boening executed a precise cluster break to win the next game. But he fouled and Shaw ran out to capture game five. Shaw came up empty on the break and, after a safety battle, Van Boening ran out. So, after six games, the score was tied at 3-3. At this point it looked like these two would remain in lockstep until the end. But then Shaw’s offense exploded. After Van Boening broke dry, Shaw banked the 3-ball into the 10-ball to take a 4-3 lead. Then he broke and ran out two games in a row, made a jump shot on the 2-ball and ran out the next game, then broke and ran out again to zoom into a 9-3 lead. Van Boening won after Shaw missed a routine shot on the 6-ball, and he won the next with a long rail bank after Shaw missed shape on the 10-ball and had to play safe.Shaw rebounded after Van Boening missed the 8-ball, and then ran 8 and out when Van Boening missed again in the following rack. Shaw won the first game, 5-4, but Brumback cruised to a quick 5-1 win in game 2.In the third game of this race to three the two players traded safeties, misses, and scratches in a marathon that Shaw eventually took, 5-4. But Brumback, considered by many to be the world’s best bank pool player, dominated the next rack, 5-2, to send the match into double hill.He pocketed a ball on the break and pocketed three banks. Alex Pagulayan is the DCC 1-Pocket Division Champion for the second year in a row.Pagulayan became the third player to win multiple DCC 1-Pocket titles when he defeated Niels Feijen in the finals, 3-1. He and Shane Van Boening (2010-11) have both won back-to-back titles.In the finals Alex faced Niels Feijen. They

traded the first two games. The third game saw an hour long match with back and forth advantages for both players but Pagulayan emerged victorious , score 2-1. The fourth and final game the two traded shots with Niels missing a combo shot and Alex securing the win! Congratulations!

He pocketed a bank/combo on a hanging 9-ball after Pagulayan had missed a billiard in game 4. Then in game 5 he made a jump shot on the 4-ball, a crossover bank on the 5, and proceeded to run out.In game 6 Van Boening broke and ran

out, won game 7, then rolled in a long shot off of the end rail on the 2-ball and broke and ran game 8 to lead the match 8 games to zip.Van Boening had a chance to make a kick combo on the 1-9, but missed. Pagulayan put together an outstanding run, broke and then pocketed a 3-9 kick combo, and broke and ran two more to trail, 8-4. It looked like his streak would continue, but he missed an easy shot on the2-balll and Van Boening closed out the game and the match. Congratulations to Shane Van Boening!!

The players arrived Friday night(January 15) and took out their cues and prepared to do battle on the tables and what good battles were played. The competition had begun. On Friday night there were several hill-hill matches. The majority of the matches went 7-5. With the winner break format, one mistake proved to be very costly. On Saturday there were six hill-hill matches. It was fun to watch. There was a good showing from the Longview area with the likes of Ivan Doty, Herschel Blaylock, Mike Jensen, Ben Renteria, Shane Duncklee and Jake Holper. Bryan Skinner had a great match against Pete Gates that went hill-hill with Pete being the victor. Paul Marquez defeated Zac Masiba 7-1 to put him in position to play for the point. Michael Jensen defeated Justin Lilje 7 to 5 to put him in position to square off with Paul. Michael defeated Paul 3-7, sending him to the B side to match up with Zac Masiba. Paul defeated Zac 7-2 and prepared to square off with Michael Jensen again. Paul defeated Michael 7-3. Paul played like a champion. They squared off again to determine the winner and Michael defeated Paul 7-3. What a great tournament. The Nite Hawk instituted a dress code for playing at the Nite Hawk. We are calling it “business casual” which consists of dress slacks and a nice shirt. No

jeans, shorts, sweat suits or t-shirts. This will be the norm for any tournament at the Nite Hawk and will become mandatory. The guys all looked so nice dressed up although not everyone saw a flyer on the dress code. I would like to thank Pat Mowdy, our Referee and Becky Mowdy who helped me with the handing out of “thank you for coming travel mugs”. I would also like to thank the Nite Hawk for hosting this event and thank the staff for all their hard work. It was a great tourna-ment!

On January 8th & 9th, the Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial Monthly Pool Tournament in Saratoga, WY was held at Duke’s Bar & Grill. Players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Cheyenne and Evanston battled it out for the 8-ball title. The eventual champion, Monte Thayer of Rawlins, WY, went through the field undefeated en route to a 1st place finish that included tough wins over Anthony Lucero, Ken Tysver, Mark Osborne, EJ Glode and Ole Olson. Tournament run-ner up honors went to the always smooth Ole Olson of Rawlins, WY who shot strong all weekend. These tournaments continue each month with $1,000 added to each tournament and only a $30 entry fee which gets paid back to the players 100%. The fact that there are no green fees or quarters required and $49 per night motel rooms makes this tournament a must for all rocky mountain regional players or those just passing through the area! Most of us don’t have the raw natural talent to become great players without working at it. If you’re good, you practice. If you want to be good, you practice. You won’t be getting better if you’re not practicing. And meanwhile, somebody else, who may beat you in the future, is putting in that practice time. If you actually want to get better, you’ll make time for practice. 15 minutes of concentrated practice will do more for your game than hours of play.

“OK. I practice. I drill a few straight-ins, shoot a coupla spot shots, try a cross-side bank, and I’m ready to play,” you might say. I’d say this is all useful, but it’s not practice. It’s checking out the equipment and your stroke.

Many players practice by throwing a few balls on the table and trying to run them out. Other times, they shoot low percentage shots. This is fun stuff. When you succeed, you look good and feel good. When you fail, well, it was a low percentage shot, what the hey?

If you only practice what you’re already good at, you’ll look great, but your game will not improve. Practicing what’s easy is too easy. On the other hand, don’t spend your practice time on extremely difficult shots. You’re going to miss them and not know why. You won’t get better, and with all that missing, you won’t be building your confidence. Practicing failure is not a good idea.

What types of things should you practice? Practice the things you do worst. This is obvious, but how many players actually do this? How else are you going to get better at them? Improving your worst things will raise your entire game. How about practicing that shot

that cost you the match, that angle you always see wrong, shooting softly, shooting hard, getting

position when the object ball is hanging in the

corner pocket, drawing more accurately, remembering to plan at least three balls ahead, checking where your tip is actually hitting the cueball (vs. what you believe), experimenting with controlling sidespin, jumping, curving, rail shots, kicks, banks, etc. There is enough to keep you engaged for a lifetime.

So, there’s banging balls around the table, and then there’s practice. BCA Master Instructor Jerry Briesath says “Perfect practice makes perfect.” He means you get better not just because you practice, but because you practice the right things, in an effective way. I say “Practice makes permanent. ” You have to “burn in” your improvements, or they will fade away.

Often, the most effective way to practice is what’s called “progressive practice.” Billiard Digest columnist Bob Jewett promotes this method, and I’ve seen it yield wonderful results. Here’s how it works. Pick a shot or skill to work with. Let’s say it’s medium speed spot shots. The usual practice method – setting it up and having a whack at it 5 or 10 times – is not going to help much if you’re only making it 1 time out of 5.

The trick to progressive practice is to start with the easiest possible version of the shot , instead of starting where you’re already having trouble. So, for our spot shot example, spot the object ball, and then move the cueball forward along the line to the object ball until it’s only a diamond or so away. Shoot the shot. If you make it, move the cueball back a diamond or a half diamond for the next try (making it progressively harder). Shoot 15 or 20 times. If you miss, move forward to the next easiest shot position. When you make it, make the next one a little tougher. This type of practice quickly shows you where your trouble begins, and keeps you working right near the edge of your current ability. Try it. Make progress.

Michael has been playing pool almost all of his life (except when he was in the Navy — it’s hard to install a pool table on a rocking ship!). He managed to stay away from the hustler life; he doesn’t believe in being dishonest in order to win money. He will, however, occasionally play for a beer or two at the local watering hole. Michael teaches all levels of pool players, from beginner to pro, and works on all aspects of the game, from fundamentals, to pattern play, to trick shots. How many of you have experienced this? You’re at the local pool room, playing a few sets of 9-ball. At the next table over, you see a young couple playing, both of whom have obviously just picked up a cue for the first time. The young man, although he has terrible form, makes a ball every once in a while, while the young lady is lucky to even hit the cue ball.Even more amusing is that he is “teaching” her how to aim at the ball she’s trying to make. And he’s doing it all wrong!After enduring the pain for a while, you decide that something really needs to be done before they end up ripping the cloth or spilling their beers on the table. Before you do, let me give you some advice.First, consider not giving them any help. There’s a good chance they are on a date, and the last thing they really need is someone intruding on their personal space. Observe them (but don’t be creepy about it!), and try to determine if they are just having a good time while having a drink, or if they are frustrated because they can’t seem to get it right. If they are laughing and having a good time, leave them alone.If they do look like they might need help, engage them in conversation first. Develop a bit of a rapport with them before launching into a pool lesson. Once you have exchanged pleasantries for a while, casually offer some help if they want it. No doubt by now they have probably observed your game, and can see that you are good. Leave it up to them to ask for help, and do not be pushy or aggressive.Assuming that they do want your help, and you’re ready to teach them, what should you tell them? Hopefully by now, you have observed a few things (stance, bridging, aim), and have some idea. If you haven’t, then have him take a few shots, or even play a game against him to observe.Sometimes, he’ll know what he’s having trouble with (“I can’t seem to shoot straight”), so you’ll know what to look for (proper alignment, pendulum swing, etc.). Sometimes they’ll have no idea, and it will be up to you to figure it out for them.I know a guy who absolutely loves to teach people how to play

pool. The only problem is that he is very negative. He’ll observe you shooting a shot, then immediately tell you everything

you are doing wrong. I believe this is the wrong approach.I’m not here to teach you to be an instructor, and I

don’t have any patented techniques for turning someone into a professional. However, there are right and wrong ways to teach, and I’ll share some of my own ideas with you.I don’t believe in the word “don’t.” When I am teaching one of my students, I try to focus on the positive. For example, if they are gripping the cue too tightly, instead of saying to them “don’t grip the cue so tightly,” I suggest to them that they might have better results gripping with just their index finger and thumb wrapped around the grip, with their other fingers loose. I’ll explain the reason, as well, so they understand why.If they stand up during their shot, instead of saying “don’t stand up during your shot,” I’ll let them know that staying down on the shot helps ensure that they follow through properly, increasing their chance of making the ball. I am also a strong believer in self-evaluation. After a successful shot, I’ll ask my student how the shot felt. I want them to focus on the feel of the shot, so that they remember it, and attempt to repeat it. If they make a mistake, I’ll ask them what they think went wrong. If they are on the wrong track, I’ll remind them to check their grip, or alignment, or not to forget to chalk.I also sometimes will take a video of their shot, from a position that helps emphasize the mistake(s) they are making. I’ll then show them the video, and ask them what they see. Even if I have to point out the mistake, I will be sure to show them what they are doing well, too (“See how your elbow doesn’t drop during this shot? That’s awesome!”).Pool is fun. Sometimes (especially during tournaments and league competition) we can forget that, and be especially hard on ourselves. But for most people, it’s a recreational game that’s fun to play. If your teaching only focuses on the negative, all you are going to do is drive people away from the game. Be positive. Praise your student when they do well, and encourage them when they do not. And learn to recognize when they just want to play. How consistent is your one-rail kicking with side spin? Suppose you are faced with kick shots like A1-A3 where you need to kick at a ball but obstructions keep you from using the natural angle so you are forced to go straight into the first rail. Do you have any method or system to get to the 1 ball?There are a bunch of systems that help on shots like this, but let’s work on developing your own for your own stroke and your own table.Start with shot A1. Hit the cue ball on the equator with some right side spin. For a start try lining the shot up so edge of your cue stick is right at the centerline of the cue ball. That means that the tip is 1/2 tip diameter to the right of hitting the cue ball in the exact center. Carefully come straight through at that point and see where the cue ball goes. Also be careful to shoot straight across the table and avoid the tendency to shoot along the no-English kick path.Also try reversing the shot so that you are using left English the other way across the table. If the cue ball doesn’t come off the cushion at about the same angle, you have a problem seeing the center of the cue ball which needs to be fixed before you go on.Adjust the amount of side spin so that you pocket the 1 ball. Practice until you make the shot -- which is pretty easy for a kick shot -- three times in a row.Next move on to shot A2. You will need to hit the cue ball with about twice as much side spin as A1. Again, practice the shot until you make it three in a row. And again, try it in the other direction (with left English) to make sure your left is the same as your right.Finally, try A3. Have you remembered to chalk and also to check your tip for proper chalking before you shoot?Some people refer to these amounts of English as 1 tip, 2 tips and 3 tips. If the offsets you end up using for these three shots look like some convenient part of a tip, such as 1, 2, and 3 half-tip offsets, that’s great but you will probably just have to remember how far from center you have to hit for each shot.For the shots B1-B3 to make the 2 ball you are shooting the long way on the table so the amount of side spin is roughly half of the spin on the corresponding A shots. That is, shot B1 should require half as much offset as A1 since the angle change off the far rail is half as much. These shots are quite

a bit harder due to the much longer travel. Also, since the ball has a longer path to the rail, it will tend to lose

more of its spin on the trip down.Next, try the shots from the B positions to the

3 ball in the side pocket. These shots should be the same as the A shots since the cue ball needs to make the same angle off the cushion as those shots. The main difference will be the loss of spin on the cloth. See if you notice a difference from the A shots.Finally, just for fun, kick at the 2 ball from the B1 position, and see how far out on the cushion you can shoot (to your right) and still come back to make the 2 ball. With your best side spin -- and a little bit of draw to multiply the effect of the side spin -- you should be able to shoot nearly out to the X and still come back to make the 2 ball.

One of the most challenging aspects of playing pool is knowing how to choose the right kind of coach to get you started on a pathway to proficiency. Your goal should be to find a teacher that has a keen understanding of both the mental and mechanical aspects of the game. Your teacher should be a talented communicator, someone who can help you enhance your own physical and mental playing abilities. The first thing to remember when looking for a quality pool instructor is that there are no miracle workers. The billiards industry is filled with instructors who advertise how their teachings will improve your game by two balls overnight. That’s not going to happen, believe it! A proficient instructor will know how to assess your skills and recognize what areas you need to improve upon. They should be able to help you get the most out of your game without requiring you to practice for an unreasonable amount of time.Coaching Skills: Your instructor should be able to coach you in a way that will help you build both a solid physical and mental game. They should have a positive outlook and be easy to work with. An instructor that is always focusing on how the pros “do it” without taking into consideration your own personal limitations may cause you problems over

the long haul. Your instructor should be patient and have an outline of how they plan to get you started in the direction that you want to go.Listening Abilities: You will also want to find a coach who is willing to listen to whatever you have to say. They should be willing to answer any questions that you might have. Even when you’re not involved in a lesson, your instructor should be easy to reach. Many students tend to be impatient and want answers to their questions right away.

A good instructor always returns calls or emails in a timely fashion. They Should be Great Players: There are many reputable instructors that can be found online through the American CueSports Association (ACS) or Professional Billiards Instructors Association (PBIA) websites. However, there are also many

certified instructors that are more than willing to teach you both the physical and mental aspects of the game without having taken the time to master the skills themselves. You will want to find an instructor that has at least won a few tournaments. You will also want to find out if your prospective instructor has played on the national level and what his or her top finishes were. This will tell you if they have developed the skills necessary to teach. If they can’t defeat players on a national level, chances are they won’t be able to help you to improve your game beyond the local level.They Must Be Serious: When you’re serious about the game of pool, you want to make sure that your instructor is just as serious about the game as you are. Make sure that you research several instructors to ensure that the one you choose has the background and skills necessary to improve your game. 21st Century Instruction: In the past, students were often limited to instruction from pool teachers living in their geographic area. Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin.Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.”Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame.Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. THE RAILROAD SHOTOne of the most traditional and popular trick shots ever is certainly the “Railroad Shot”. There are at least 4-5 different variations of it but for now I am going to introduce you to its classic version. If any of you has the complete DVD collection of Dean Martin’s Variety Show (like I do), you will see Dean attempting this shot in a 1966 episode of his extremely popular TV show. If you wish, you can also watch it on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/stefano.pelinga/videos_byStart by getting 3 standard-length house cues and lay them on the table as shown in the diagram: all three of them need to have their butts stuck inside the corner pocket. Two cues lay parallel and frozen to each other aiming at the Yellow Ball, while you will need to take the third one apart by sliding it away as much as possible, thus forming a fairly wide funnel. Because of the length of the 3 cues, this shot cannot be done on a 7-foot table and it is pretty tight on an 8-foot one.Place a couple of balls (the Green and the Red Ball in the diagram) frozen to each other, perpendicular to the long rail and in front of the top half of the side pocket, with the left edge of the Green Ball even with the long rail’s edge.Then place the third Object Ball (the Yellow Ball) by the side pocket, using the bottom half of it, and close to its edge.The Cue Ball should be placed behind the first diamond from the side pocket and at about 1/2 ball distance from the long rail. Lean your cue on the rail, between your index and middle fingers and aim the right half of the Red Ball, using 2 tips of left English on the Cue Ball. Basically the only difficulty of this shot is represented by Speed Control. Try using a 2.5-3 speed stroke but it may vary according to different tables, rails and cloth.

The Green Ball will be sunk first in the side pocket followed by the Red Ball in the corner pocket. The Cue Ball will travel 3 rails and while heading for the bottom right corner pocket, climb onto the cues which will serve as a railroad. Then the CB, if struck with the right speed, will make a switch in the pocket and come down picking up speed along the two frozen cues until it will pocket the last OB in the side. Needless to say that if you shoot the CB too hard, it will “derail” while making the switch. If you hit it too softly, it will not manage to climb up the cues and will slowly reverse its path.What a great crowd-pleaser!

The 2016 edition of “Win Jim’s Money” 9 ball Tournament kicked off with the January event held at The Cue Ball in Salem OR on Saturday the 9th. APA had their Tri-Cups the same weekend, so the participant count was 31 players. A solid field showed up though.

Carlos Santibanez lost to Joseph Farmer on a hill/hill game, losing when he scratched on the 5 and Farmer closed out the match. Santibanez claimed 3rd

place and $ 80 for his troublesIn the final, Farmer met Sheldon Lebow who had

seized on the point. Farmer needed to beat Lebow twice to claim 1st place. Sheldon was ahead in the 1st match on the hill at 4 to 3 with the break. Lebow broke dry and didn’t get back to the table. Farmer ran the string and closed out the 1st match, setting up the final match of the day.

The Broken Rack got 2016 off to a great start with its second annual New Year’s Day Open 9Ball Tournament. While the initial tournament last year drew 25 players, this year the maximum field of 48 filled well before the registration period was scheduled to end. The format was double elimination, race to five. The entry fee was $25 and The Broken Rack added $300.Jason had had things pretty much his way all day but Rylan was determined to end that and took the first set of the finals 5-4. But Jason came roaring back to win the second set 5-1 and take first place. Thanks to all the players who came out and to our Tournament Director Linda Silva. Our next holiday tournament will be an open 8 Ball tournament on President’s Day, Monday, February

Divisions of eight and seven teams respectively played for 14 weeks and a good time was had by all. MISSION STATEMENT PACIFIC AMERICAN CUESPORTS (PACS)PACS is dedicated to promoting the sport of pool at all amateur skill levelsPACS is dedicated to administering a nonprofit organization for the players, by the players, and to ensure that all players are treated equally and fairlyIn response to a growing number of concerns and comments from players as to the health of our sport, which we all love, we are in the process of implementing “Dual Sanctioning” of individual players. What this means is: 1. That if you are currently playing in a league, whether it be a National league or a City league, you may “Dual Sanction” with the ACS/PACS simply by providing PACS with a “Dual Sanction” application along with $30 ($10 for Nationals, $10 for the Association, and $10 for a processing fee). The Dual Sanction form is available on the PACS website at PacificACS.org 2. Each “Dual Sanctioned” individual player would be responsible for providing the Association with a league standing sheet displaying individual player performance every week via email to prove the player has played a minimum of 8 weeks in one session in order to

qualify for the Regional PACS tournament and be qualified to play at ACS Nationals. 3. These players will be listed separately as Pacific American CueSports “Dual Sanction” players. If two players from the same team within a league they are playing in “Dual Sanctioned” together, this would give you the two person core for putting together a team for the Regional Tournament. 4. If you do not have two players from the same team, you would be eligible to be picked up by other teams within the Pacific American CueSports league system. Our Goal is to accommodate those players who cannot play 3 or 4 nights a week, or those who have families and do not want to play that many nights a week. This way you can play one league and be qualified to attend tournaments in several organizations. This will work if we all work together and do our due diligence to make sure that we take responsibility to ensure that we follow the guidelines. Winding down, 1st - 4th play went like this...Paul Marquez took the point defeating Michael Deitchman who then was defeated by Eddie Mataya on the backside who previously defeated Russel Cleary. Great play! Really GREAT play!

We really don’t know who the champion would have really been in the end because the man on point had to leave so a split was arranged between the final 3 players, Paul, Mike and Eddie. Mike and Eddie remained and played out with Eddie taking “2nd” ? and Mike taking 3rd?. $617 each and Paul took $775 Home early from the point, technically securing 2nd place and $620.

Thank you gentlemen! However, and with considerable backlash from spectators, Calcutta participants and players, next time... you take what you place. The house needs a Champion in this type of event.

FALL SESSION 2015-WOMEN’S LEAGUEThe Diablo Valley Pool League finished their Women’s Winter BCA 8-Ball session by holding their regular final team tourney and gathering all the participating teams at Cue N Brew in Martinez, the proud sponsor of the women’s champion team, No Mercy, who dominated the two sessions played during 2015.The winter session ran from August 8, 2014 and completed on Jun 24, 2015 with 8 participating teams in a four round session with a handicap of 135%. This league raised a total of $9,432. Sponsors pay $100 per team to add to the pot. The Women’s league is known for its competitiveness around the Bay Area, which is why its members come from Oakland, Fairfield, Vallejo, Hayward, Concord, Pinole and many other surrounding cities. The challenge is worth the drive time. DVPL consistently recognizes the players who have improved from season to sea-son, along with those who are shooting the best from session to session. All teams get paid as well.This session Stacey Wilson, a veteran of the league, brought her game up to show total improvement on her game from the begin-ning of league until the end, grabbing the Most Improved Award. Congratulations to her. For the Top Female shooter there is aways a tough race as we have excellent shooters always competing for that spot. This session Deanna Spomer took the top prize, ending the season with a 9.10 average and earning $100. The competition for Most Improved, Top Shooter, and Top Team is a fierce one from the first night of league play all the way down to the very last ball of the session. Let us congratulate No Mercy, out of Cue N Brew in Martinez, Ca. They held the first place Spot for a majority of the season, while former champions, The Dames, from Vinnie’s Bar; kept a close eye on them the whole session, hoping to capitalize on a bad evening for them and take the lead. For No Mercy, Cony Mendoza’s game speaks for itself, defense is her forte. Josie Baraquil, another veteran of the game added her two cents helping the team secure the title. She loves those shots up the rail and can have an explosive night running all tables. Kendra Fuller participant of the Tiger West Coast 9-Ball Tour joined our league and added power to the team. Kendra came in to fill in the shoes for Kacie when she migrated to Erin’s team. Holly Robinson former BCA senior champion, joined the team to add even more power to the team. Her game and cue ball control set the pace for the group. Stephanie Guinn from Miss Velt, also alternated for No Mercy and helped the team secure top place.

The Hot Flashes from The Office team, led by Tina Mendoza had a decent ses-sion and picked up Miss Fawn Leavitt from Miss Felt’s group for a few weeks, and her game helps the team stay on the race for the top places. Stacey Wilson and Kristin Eisen do their job and keep taking no prisoners. Half way through session Charlene Hastings joins the Office team, and her game propelled the team to win second place. Charlene had a perfect night on Nov 4, by shooting a 50, the highest ever score in the women’s league. Laura Tow, captain of Your Average Killer from Rack Em Up continues to build her team with some power by adding Michelle Fraser, another Tiger West Coast participant, a quick and aggressive shooter, as well as recruiting a previous DVPL participant Lori Duchman to her team after she had been absent from the game for several years. Finally, Bonnie Koerner, the last but not least mem-ber of this team, place. The final standings at the end of the season read as follow :

Behind the Rock 220 & 198Tri-Annual EventsWith players from Cue-Topia Billiards Lakewood WA, Couer d’Alene ID and Auburn WA compete for the Behind the Rock final tri-annual event of the year. All the players brought their handicaps and participated in the 220 Open division with each location having a player in the finals.As each location played remotely, but competed against each other overall the results were very exciting. Players paid a $35 entry and each location added $10/players while over the last 4 months $.50 per player per match was set aside and added to the purse for the total prize payout of $723.00 paying 1/3 of the field.12 players entered this event. Player’s handicaps are calculated over their 20 matches. The handicaps calculated to 1/100th of a point and added to the scratch score the players shoot. In round players play 2 matches and the best of the two matches is calculated. From here the top 75% of the total field moves on to the Sudden Death round which is just one match. No pressure! Players securing a spot in the Sudden Death round, in the order of performance were, Steve Abraham shooting a solid 101 combined with his handicap for a total score of 182.10 just topping 2nd by only 0.3 of a point Pete Gonzales score 89+50.85=181.8, 3rd place position Deby Welfringer shooting a 66+97.20=163.20 just 1.8 points over Larry Francisco 68+93.56=161.5 for 4th position and just 0.3 points over John Strout 57+104.2=161.2 with Bob Johnston, Joe Johnson, Ren Hone Derek Weater, Patrick Eudy and Duane Bumgarmer to fill the round.The Sudden Death round was a fight to the end and is exhausting as it is the third back to back match of the first day. The top 1/3 of the total field will play in the finals which would qualify 4 players for the finals. Having to bring you best game in one match turns the heat up and everyone was feeling it. Abraham after shooting such a big score in the first round and shooting over his average fell short to make it through with a final score of 159.88. Pete Gonzales rolled in a

nice 170.84 points and Larry Francisco came on strong with a 177.56.The final round was no less exciting. As all the rooms look onto the website from their location waiting for scores to post the excitement builds. The finals are the best of two matches and it went down like this. Joe Johnson shot just under his average by 0.8 of a points landing him in 4th place and taking home a paycheck of $72.00. Ren

Hone just over his average by 2.95 points and over Johnson by 4.22 points put him in 3rd getting paid $108.00. Pete Gonzales shot 9.15 points over his average and a final score of 152.84 which left Larry Francisco on the top of the pile. Francisco had a great finals match shooting a personal best of 57.95 points over his average and a score of 108. Francisco smoking the rest of the field and cashing in for $362.00.

Eberly shot a personal best of 56 points which put her in the top seat coming out of the first round. Peter Bowen grabs the 2nd position, Ken Smith and Dave Parker in 3rd and 4th position.The Sudden Death round which is only one match of 11 games of 9 ball vs. the Ghost, sends the top 1/3 of the total field to the finals. This is where the heat gets turned up. Eberly topped her personal best from round 1 with another personal best of 61 points. 61 points brought her in at 22.35 points over her average to maintain 1st position over second place holder Dave Parker who shot a 34, 0.14 points under his average, but it was enough to lock down 2nd position which moved Eberly and Parker to the finals.The finals were the best of two matches. like

this. Dave Bersendaze shot a great score of 92 points. This put him at 6.65 below his average and it was just enough to advance him to the Sudden Death round. 3rd position went to Wayne Leslie shooting just 2.35 over his average and a final score with his handicap of 132.49. 14-year-old Tyler Reygers shot 15.5 points over his average which brought him a final

score of 144.89 and Tom Snider snagged 1st position shooting a 66, 24.95 over his average and a final score of 153.80. From here players went to the Sudden Death round.The shake out ended up like this. Dave Bersenadze shot a solid 98 points and a final score of 133.92, but was over taken by Snider from Cue-Topia Billiards who shot a 51 and a final score of 138.8 squeezing Bersenadze out of the finals by just 4.88 points. Reygers from Cue-Topia Billiards ended up on the top of the stack shooting 60 points, 18.95 over his average and a final score of 142.98 putting Snider and Reygers in the finals.The finals were exciting. Reygers finished his match first and was watching and waiting as Snider played his final match. Reygers played just over his average by 8.5 points. This gave Reygers some hope of grabbing 1st, but all he could do is sit and wait as Snider played

it out. It came down to the last game and the heat was on. Snider had to break and run his last rack to grab the 1st place title. Reygers watched from the side line, calculating with every ball sank. Unfortunately, Snider came up just 2 balls shy of shagging that final rack. Game over. Snider

played solid coming in at 5.95 over his average, but falling short by just 3.09 points for the title. This

is Reygers 3rd win in the 198 Tri-Annual events. Locking up 2 wins in the Intermediate division before advancing to the Open division and then grabbing a win in the Open division. Cue-Topia Billiards in Lakewood Wa held a Winner Takes All 9-ball single elimination, single buy back one day tournament Dec. 26th.In this $40 entry and a $35 buy back tournament. We landed 10 players and a starting purse of $400. The cream that rose to the top after the first three buy backs were: Eddie Mataya, Tommy Sliva, Ed Hobbs, Steve Abraham, Dustin and Larry Francisco. When it was all said and done, Francisco beats Hobbs, Sliva beats Francisco, Dustin beats Sliva putting Sliva out of the running and Abraham beats Mataya for the second time knocking Mataya out of the tournament. Francisco and Hobbs used their buy back and then there were four.With four players, Abraham and Dustin were undefeated while Hobbs and Francisco were on their last leg. Abraham beats Francisco and Dustin knocking Francisco out. Abraham beats Dustin forcing Dustin to use his buy back. This left Abraham as the only player with a buy back left and the others

fighting for their place in the finals. Hobbs runs over Dustin which left Abraham and Hobbs in the finals. Abraham comes to the finals with his buy back left and Hobbs hanging on by his fingernails. Hobbs wins the first set forcing Abraham to buy back in and add another $35 to the purse. Abraham jumps out of the gate in the final set to get up on Hobbs 4-0. Hobbs turns around wins a game and then breaks and runs two more games making the score 4-3. Hobbs wins game 8 and from here Abraham wins one more game before Hobbs closes the final match out with a final score of 7-5. Congratulations to Ed Hobbs winning the final purse of $610. Not a bad day’s work. This was a fun format and we’ll be doing more of them. We’ll list our tournaments in On The Break News for upcoming events.
