Bewdley Rowing ClubIt was three years ago, almost to the day, that I had a conversation with a workcolleague that changed my life in Bewdley.
He asked if I wanted to join him in a Pub and Club rowingteam. Without hesitation, I said yes. Madly in love with theRiver Severn, I had for many yearswanted to enjoy sport on its waters, but didn’t know howto join the rowing club. I had wanted to enter the Pub andClub Regatta, but couldn’t find three others who felt thesame way. So, finally, this was my chance. We had a mixedteam of two men and two women, who had six lessons inbasic rowing during the month of May. Ourinitial outing on the water displayed no rowing ability at all,to the point of making our previouslyteetotal coach/cox turn to her first drink in years! But,with more coaching, our confidence grew and we began to
really enjoy ourselves. On Regatta day itself,we lost our one and only race to the even-tual winners of the mixed competition. De-spite our defeat, we had a great day in thesunshine and I chose to stay on as a memberof the rowing club and begin more serioustraining; the best thing I’ve ever done.
I have rowed at events across the Midlands,on theThames in London and even the NewDanube Canal inVienna! I’m a late starter inthis sport, having joined at the age of 38 andwill probably never be a champion, but I’vewon a couple of races, am fitter than everand have developed a
competitive spirit never experienced in school PE lessons. Maybe most importantly, I havemade many friends, who include the verypeople who beat us three years ago!
If you want to take part in this year’s Pub andClub Regatta, visit Bewdley Rowing Club’swebsite www.bewdleyrc.co.uk or enter“Bewdley Pub and Club” on Facebook. Trainingstarts on Good Friday. The Regatta will be heldon Saturday 4th June.We look forward to seeing you!

You may have heard that joke about the man who prayed fervently to winthe lottery. “I really need the money, God”, he gasped. “The house isabout to be repossessed, the children are crying with hunger and the dogleft weeks ago”. “You certainly sound like a deserving case”, says God,“I’llsee what I can do”. Several Saturdays pass without any wins and the manhas another go at God. “Look, help me out here”, replies the Almighty,“Buy a lottery ticket!”.
I was reminded of this joke when my brother came over from Northamptonshire. Wewalked down to the town and discussed the problem of the empty shops there. Later Ireflected that until I could put my hand on my heart and say I never went elsewhere forthings I could buy in Bewdley, I didn’t have a leg to stand on.
Like a lot of us, I grumble about the traffic. Have I got in my car when I could have walked orgone on the bus? Yes, of course I have. I’ve said,“Why doesn’t the council do somethingabout….?” But I’ve never been to a council meeting. I tut about how the young people hangaround the streets. You’ll find a plea inside this edition for someone to take up the Scout andGuide banner for the town. I could go on, but I think it’s clear that to have a moral grumbleabout something, I should make sure I shouldn’t be grumbling about myself.

Bewdley CherriesMembers of the Grow with Wyre team, theWyre Forest Study Group, and the FoodGroup are planning several events during thecherry blossom and fruiting season.
We are planning a "Cherry Fair" in Bewdleyto revive interest in the once thriving localharvest of cherries during June and July. Thetraditional cherry fair was held on SaintAnne's Day, July 26th and was set up by theEdward IV Town Charter of 1472. There isno mention of cherries in the Charter, butthe date is the nearest of the ancient FairDays to the cherry fruiting season, whichlasts from late May to nearly August.
There was a crop in 2010, the first for manyyears, but we cannot be certain of fruit thisyear. Nevertheless, we have to plan ahead inany case. People will be aware of an increas-ing interest in old varieties of apples, butthere is pressing urgency to establish the existence of old varieties of cherry. The ideaof the event is that people bring along samples of their own fruit for possible identification and to build up a collection ofvarieties growing locally.
Then during cherry blossom time, we areplanning to hold walks among the local blossom and also to help identify cherry varieties. This is a difficult task and we needall the help we can get, so look out for further notices of times and venue.

All Set for the New Seasonat the TIC
Spring is a wonderful time in Bewdley andeven more so at the Tourist InformationCentre. This is the beginning of the maintourist season and from the 1st April we willbe open every day between 10 am and 4.30pm. At the same time, the Museum and theFood Foundry Tea Shop will be throwingopen its doors to the tourists and locals wholove to experience the delights that Bewdleyhas to offer.
We aim to offer the best service possible tothose who come in for information and weare pleased to announce that this year forthe first time we will be selling tickets for theSevern Valley Railway. As in other years wewill be selling discounted tickets for the WestMidlands Safari Park. In addition, we will havetickets for many of the local musical events inand around the area, including the Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra. For thoselooking to go further afield, we will have tickets for coach trips and tours.
We were wondering if anyone could helpone of regular visitors, Reggie, the Englishsetter. Reggie loves exploring Bewdley but isdisappointed that the TIC has so little information on ‘dog friendly’ pubs, attractionsand places to visit. So if you would like tohelp Reggie and many of his friends that visiteach year, please let us have any relevant information.
We look forward to welcoming you to theTIC and if you can’t get in, please telephone on 01299 404740 or
email [email protected].
Letter From Cassidy
Sorry to start with bad news. In my last letter I said I have a new boyfriend: well, verysadly he’s passed away. I still look for him, butI’m also kept very busy with lots of visitors.Mum and Dad’s friends came to stay fromSpain; it was my first meeting and I reallydon’t like strangers so it didn’t go well tobegin with. Still, it all settled down after acouple of days. His name confused me, it’spronounced “Hey Zeus”, but spelt Jesus, which seems funny to me. Still I’m an Englishdog and I know those Spanish dogs talk different to us.Now I must go and practise my Spanish barking. Love, Cassidy.

Bewdley Youth Caféneeds your support
Like many other charities Bewdley Youth Café is struggling inits efforts to raise money - without grants/contributions fromvarious organisations it will be forced to close. There arevery few facilities in the town for the young people. The Caféhas provided a much needed facility for them, but without thesupport of the local community there is a very serious dangerit will not be able to continue.
The only contributions locally have been from the TownCouncil who has supported them every year, the Civic Society, the Co-op and the Presidentof Bewdley Rotary Club who gave money from his own pocket. Kidderminster and DistrictYouth Trust awarded a grant to cover last year's rent, and the Police have been totally supportive from the outset. The Café was fortunate to receive a large grant from the National Lottery for the renovation of the site and to equip the Café.
There are those who criticize the Café; they ask why it is not open during the day. Firstly, theyoung people are at school (it is open when they are on holiday) and secondly, a lack ofmoney. They have one paid member of staff who already works far more hours than she ispaid for and a group of wonderful volunteers, and of course the trustees who all do their bitvoluntarily; three of the local churches are assisting by overseeing Friday evening but there isstill not enough help to open for longer.
“We have approached many organisations asking if they would like to use the Café during theday; so far no one has taken us up on this.”
“We need support from the local community”, said Derek Killingworth. “We have nearly 500young Members; are they really to be deprived of something that is needed?”
Just come in look at the Café; talk to the young people and make your own minds upwhether you want to support them to make sure they can keep going.

The museum is open daily from 10am – 4.30pm. Entry is Free. For the full programmeof 2011 activities, exhibitions and events visit the websitehttp://www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or request a free brochure from the Be-wdley Tourist Information Centre 01299 404740.
BBeewwddlleeyy LLiibbrraarryyWe are now several weeks into our new system of working withthe much ‘anticipated’ self service machine, and apart from the daywhen I was opening up alone for the first time and it flashed on,only for the screen to immediately go blank, all seems to be goingrelatively well.
We have a lot of footfall from Bewdley’s senior citizens, and I wantto pay tribute to how well the vast majority of them have copedwith self service. Many were unsure at first, however on seeing thatseveral books can be ‘read’ by the machine at once, they changed from sceptical to impressedin the blink of an eye! And the pride on the faces of those who are nervous to try and thenfind out they can use it after all!
One or two people voiced concern that they wouldn’t be able to talk to us anymore, butthere are still real people working at the library and we need human contact, so don’t be shy– come and see us!

Heavy Horses in the forest
Those of us lucky enough to see the horses working in the forest at the beginningof last month will have marvelled at their size, strength and patience. I saw Ella, Jacob andRemco pulling effortlessly at the cart piledwith oak logs. Ella and Jacob are Percherons,Remco a Belgian. Their owner, Doug Joiner, told me that their specialised training takesabout six months; certainly these horses wereexpert loggers.
The horses are used not because they are awonderful sight, but because they cause somuch less disturbance than the heavy machinery which is the alternative. The deepruts and mud around the part of the forestwhere the horses are working is an indicationof what machines do; Ella, Jacob and Remcowere leaving only hoof-prints. They have evenbeen used at an archaeological site in the For-est of Dean. Their jingling harness also soundsa lot nicer than roaring diesel engines!

TThhee SSccoouuttss aanndd GGuuiiddeess ooff BBeewwddlleeyyPeople in Bewdley will have seen the Scouts and Guides ofBewdley and Wribbenhall parading through the town to St Anne’s church on what can be a cold rainy, sometimessunny, Sunday morning, but always with their dedicatedleaders and being led by the wonderful Bewdley District
Scout and Guide Band. Did you know that there are only a handful of Scout and Guide bandsleft in this country and we have one?
WWhhaatt aann aacchhiieevveemmeenntt ffoorr ssuucchh aa ssmmaallll ttoowwnn!! These leaders are no different from you. We all work, some of us full time; most of us haveor did have small children. The only difference is that we have all experienced the wonderfulworld of Scouting or Guiding. In my time as a leader with 3rd Bewdley (Wribbenhall) ScoutGroup I have experienced many countries, camped all over the country, but most important, have met and worked with wonderful children – some now well over 40! The pleasure I getwhen I walk down Load Street and a grown man says “Hello, remember me? Cubs and Scoutswere great. My kids are doing it now. Are you?” Up until now I would have said yes, but fromOctober I have taken a back seat and from May 3rd Bewdley will be losing their Akela afterover 20 years.
Being a leader is fun, rewarding, but most of all it gives you the chance to meet adults andchildren that will give you wonderful memories.

Bewdley Horticultural SocietyNormally April would be considered to be an excellent month to startgardening and growing vegetables. These days it’s often easier to buyhardened off plants from a nursery and plant them directly into a prepared and fertilized bed. This is especially true for an early crop ofBrussels sprouts, however for a main crop start sowing seeds now.
In well manured ground start sowing parsnip seeds after adding a little general fertilizer. Thepotatoes that have been chitting are now ready for going out into trenches that are 12inches wide by 9 deep; these should be lined with a few inches of well rotted manure, garden compost or leaf mould enriched with fertilizer.
April is a great month for starting onions on their way, use sets from nursery and cover witha little soil to keep in place. Be thinking of starting salad crops: saladonions, lettuce and radish. For a little variety try your hand at gettingartichokes started towards the end of the month and if space permitssome asparagus. To round off the offerings be a culinary expert with afew herbs, as the soil warms and dries a little think of sowing dill, chervil, chives, marjoram, parsley and sorrel.

GGaavviinn tthhee pprraaccttiiccee ccaatt..Spring seems to finally be on theway again and I am pleased to report that I am once again ableto find plenty of patches of sunin which to have my many dailycat naps.
As fleas also enjoy the springweather, I have been forced toundergo having a flea and worming spot-ontreatment put onto my skin. I do not likethis at all, but I have to endure it as I do notwant to get fleas or worms. My humanstreat me once a month to make sure that Istay clear of these parasites and as long as Iget a treat afterwards I suppose I can tolerate it.
My humans have been busy recently and havebeen to Birmingham to a big meeting for Vetsand Vet Nurses. Here they can keep theirknowledge up to date and find out moreabout the latest advances and equipment. They all enjoyed themselves and came backfull of new knowledge and with lots of freepens. I’m not sure why but all of my humansseem to be very concerned with having pensand get very upset when they cannot findone to write with. I have no need of pens;being a very good typist myself.

The internet can seem scary to those of us educatedwith pens, papers and books. When I started work in the late 70’s, I remember the excite-ment the first office basic word processor created, and as for having our own photocopier –happiness! Social media is an awful word to describe the new methods that we have of keeping in touch with each other, but it is so wonderful to find people you have not seen orheard of for years and years and see how they are now. The internet can bring friends together and we would like our web page help to bring us as the “Friends of Bewdley Museum” together.
Please start to take a look at it and bookmark the page as one of your favourites. We havean email address too at [email protected]. Why not email us your details and we willadd you to our Friends, and you can receive up to the minute details of events, volunteer opportunities and fund raising activities? So far we have had contacts from several areas ofthe world with people seeking and giving information.
If you have any tips or tricks to help us explore these new methods of communication, pleaseemail us. We still, of course, are happy to hear from you by telephone or letter, or please justpop into the museum and see us there. We can perhaps discover the worlds of blogs, postsand web links together, but for now you will have to excuse me, I have some “wheat” to “harvest” and “cows” to “milk”!

Last month I went to the WorcestershireNGS Annual General Meeting. NGS standsfor National Garden Scheme, a nation-wideorganisation, which helps garden ownersopen to the public to raise money for charities such as Macmillan Nurses.
I went to the meeting because, last May,whilst looking round my garden, I decided tojoin this happy group. And then came The BigFreeze!
During January and February, my green andverdant patch of garden was a brown, bareand decimated wilderness! Lots of my NewZealand plants have given up the ghost, as Ihad been lulled into a false sense of securitythat global warming meant every winter wasgoing to be mild; and the heavy clay soil is aquagmire!
When you read this I shall have only aboutseven weeks to sort it all out before it opensto the public on May 21st.
Shall I manage it? Yes, of course! Because already there are signs of life, with little greenbuds emerging on the trees, bulbs flowering, shoots sprouting and most of all, lots of newplants ordered to replace the dead ones. Butmuch clearing and weeding still to do, pathsto renovate and cakes to bake for the teas.
Apparently, many NGS garden owners feel abit disheartened, as they look down theirpatch in late winter, but my, what wonderfulplaces they become by the time their date inthe NGS Yellow Book arrives!

High SpiritsRob, Nigel and Clive are celebrating the end of their time inBewdley, as they finish the work to make St Anne’s securefor future generations. Their view of Bewdley has been anunusual one, as they’ve spent most of the time 150ft aboveour heads. However, they all agreed it had been a goodplace to work. “The people in Bewdley are all friendly”, saidone of the plumbers, Rob. “That’s mostly how we rate ajob”.
They belong to a very old and distinguished trade.Plumbers (originally “workers with lead”) who do the sortof specialised work required on important – often listed –buildings, have to have not only the qualifications needed bydomestic plumbers. They then have to find a firm whichwill, in a way unchanged since the Middle Ages, attach themto an experienced and skilled “master” and gradually allow them more freedom to undertaketasks on their own. These men take great pride in their work and have worked on CroomeAbbey and various churches in Worcestershire as well as further afield.
Now they have moved on, leaving us with a tower roof that should last sixty years or more.
Dear Editor,I love receiving my copy of the Bridge (Thankyou Stuart!) and keeping up to date with theTown’s news. However, over the last fewmonths there seems to have been a recurring theme ...dog fouling. Firstly Gavinthe Cat asked that vet customers utilise thefree dog poo bags and the bin, when exercising their dogs who may be visiting thepremises, following complaints about foulingalong Severnside South, and now in theMarch edition, Gabi has highlighted that Frazzle may have become ill through dog faeces.I have two young children and have had toresort to banning them from using the lowerpath along Severnside South due the amountof dog mess regularly found on that stretch. The High Street and Lax Lane are similarlyfouled. I do not think that we can focus any
blame for this disgusting mess on anyoneother than Bewdley residents...the touristscome and go, the mess doesn’t.I know there are plenty of responsible dogowners in Bewdley that always clean up aftertheir pets, but there are some that do not. Iappeal to you to change your ways before itis not only Frazzle, but a child that becomesill because of this...then the investment in apack of cheap nappy bags will seem like agood investment you wish you had made.I also appeal to the Council to step up enforcement. A recent Freedom of Information request revealed that WFDChad not issued a single penalty notice for thisin the last 12 months and sadly could noteven tell me how many complaints had beenreceived about dog mess in the area.Severnside is one of the most popular areasof Bewdley and both residents and touristsshould do everything we can to keep it thatway. You know who you are...do something aboutit.

It was alsoagreed to set aside a further sum to cover any further applications that might be madeduring the summer and autumn.Past Mayor’s PhotographsThe Mayor made a proposal that was agreed by the Council that there should be a display ofphotographs of past Mayors of Bewdley at the Guildhall. All past Mayors would be invited toprovide their own photograph plus a donation to cover the cost of a suitable frame. Thisscheme would therefore be at no cost to the Council, but it would help to reinforce the ideaof civic pride and history in Bewdley.Town CrierThe Council is still looking for anyone who feels they have a sufficiently strong voice andcould take on the role of Town Crier.Flood BarriersThe Council were informed that the Environment Agency is to carry out a review of theeffectiveness of the present system of providing temporary flood barriers at the BealesCorner/Stourport Road junction. Not Sure What to Do?
If you are not sure what you could do to cut your energy usage there is some help at hand.
Transition Bewdley Energy Group www.transitionbewdley.org is organising another localenergy trail on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May. The first trail last November was well re-ceived by those who attended. This one will again provide an opportunity to visit local exam-ples of renewable energy in action. Final details are still being sorted at the time of writing, but it is hoped that there will be opportunities to see solar water heating and electricity gen-eration, wood fuelled boilers, heat pumps, waste water management, insulation, etc. Home-owners or other relevant persons should be present at each venue to share their first handexperiences and it is hoped that local suppliers will be also be on hand to give expert help.Further details are available via Bewdley Development Trust at Snuffmill Warehouse in ParkLane: on 01299 405516 or [email protected]. Prior booking will be essential. If you havea renewable energy installation or similar that you feel might be of interest for future energytrails, please get in touch, again via Bewdley Development Trust.
The Energy Group also continues to offer free home energy checks for local residents. Oneof their volunteer Energy Champions will visit your home and give help in calculating yourcarbon footprint, saving energy (and money), exploring new technologies, etc. Further detailsand bookings are again available via Bewdley Development Trust (details above).

A mystery solvedThe name "Thos. A. Mobberley" on the St. Anne's War Memorial has puzzled people for some years, as no one of that name can be found in anyrecords to have been in World War One.
A man called Albert Mobberley had lived in Bewdley for at least twentyyears, appearing in the census entries in 1891, 1901 and 1911, living with hisuncle Joseph Mobberley. They were cattle drovers. Albert's father wasThomas Bird and his mother Mary Mobberley and although they weren't
married, they had registered their son as Thomas Albert Bird, born 17th May 1882.
In 1914, Albert enlisted with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry Regiment, but after aboutthree weeks he was discharged, as his right arm had been badly affected by burns in childhood. As Albert Bird, he tried to get into the Royal Army Service Corps, but was againrejected. Eventually, as Thomas A. Bird, he was able to enlist with the Herefordshire Regi-ment. At some point, he was transferred to the Gloucestershire Regiment and served in the14th Battalion.
Albert was killed in action on 29th October 1917 in Belgium. He is on the War Memorial asMobberley rather than Bird presumably because that is how he was known locally.
Heather Flack (with research help from Edward Perry and Ann Schmidt)
Now is the season of birdsong, replacingthe sounds of the chainsaw and crunch ofbreaking branches, which accompanied abusy winter of woodland management inthe Wyre Forest!
However, bare soil will soon be covered bynew plant growth, because it is boom timeagain. Coppiced trees and newly-laidhedges will produce new shoots and
provide excellentcover for nestingbirds in years tocome. Hedges arewonderful mini-habitats which, though man-made,mimic the conditionsfound in scrub andwoodland edge andlinking or extendingareas of woodland tomake “wildlifecorridors”. I havebeen looking at somelovely examplesrecently – masses of
hazel catkins taking over from the autumn’sshow of hawthorn berries and promising agood crop of nuts for squirrels and micenext autumn.
This month we should see the firstbutterflies of spring. The brimstones spendthe winter hibernating among ivy leaves, inwhich they are wonderfully camouflaged. They are strong fliers and, when they wake, will be heading along the rides and hedgesto refuel with nectar, then they will searchout and lay their eggs singly on the leaves ofcommon or alder buckthorn.
