Well done to Angela Maycock who was the first tospot Cheryl Stephens as a young girl.

Thanks to all oureagle eyed readerswho spotted that wefailed to identify TonyThompson fromBewdley Farm Shop inour November issue.Sorry space was very tight inthe last issue, so we wereunable to include the answer.

Now who is this delightful young lady?

Email us if you've guessed to:-

Where are they now?

Bewdley - open for businesssupport your local shops and traders

January was the planned start by S evern Trent Water and National Grid to carry outimportant renewal work to improve services for its customers in Bewdley.

Work to replace ageing water mains and renew old metal gas mains will take placesimultaneously, starting in January 2010 until May 2010.

But remember - Bewdley is open for business - so come on - support all our local traders inour town. Whether you are looking for high quality meat, vegetables, cheeses

or fancy a good meal and a pint or two, Bewdley has a lot to offer.

Severn Trent Water will be replacing a water main pipe that is over100 years old with a new plastic mains pipe. The current old

water main has started to leak frequently, with six separatebursts being experienced between September and November2009. National Grid will replace the old metal gas mainsrunning along Load Street, which have now reached the endof their working life, with hard wearing plastic pipe.

The work will be broken down into five phases to cause theminimum disruption to traffic, local residents and businesses.

The first phase began on Load Street on Monday 11th January untilFriday 12th February.

Page 3: The Bridge - February 2010

You have to say, life isn’t easy for anyone wanting to get from one sideof Bewdley to the other on four wheels at the moment. Last month wehad the Great Snowfall when the town showed us that hills can be ahindrance as well as beautiful. Now it’s holes in the road.

So I’m beginning by saying that I hope you got your magazine lastmonth, and that this edition isn’t too badly delayed. If so it was becauseour volunteers are an amazing bunch who hoof it round the streetsevery month without complaint or reward whatever the weather. Theyhave my gratitude.

This month shows a departure from our normally sober cover. Over the Christmas period,Bewdley children were entertained by Kev Sutherland, of Beano fame. I cornered him to askfor something for The Bridge, and before rushing back to London he produced this. I like tothink it wasn’t a reflection of my normally immaculate appearance, but more of a generic sortof representation of all of our Bridge people.

Our contributors this month have given us some great articles, and have been incrediblyprompt. (Could it be that, like me, the weather kept them at home by a warm fire and theircomputer?)

There’s news of the river, the forest, our museum and Bewdley through the eyes of an ex-Bewdley resident, (Bewdleyite? Bewdlarian? Bewdlier? Any suggestions to the usual address),some stunning photos from Bewdley people as well as Gary, and lots more. So forget theroadworks and the awful weather, pull up a chair, and enjoy this month’s magazine

Oh, and by the way, I haven’t forgotten Florence the hen. You’ll have to wait till next monthfor that story.

Margaret Ashmore

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Bewdley Horticultural SocietyComposting and Mulching

Composting is a natural process that converts plant materials to an organic soil supplementor mulch. Gardeners use compost to increase the organic matter in soil, improve its physicalproperties and to replace depleted nutrients to enable further plant growth.

Mulching refers to the practice of applying a layer of materials such as compost, leaves orgrass cuttings to the soil surface to change and control soil temperature, moisture levels andto control weed growth.

Preparation of compost can be done very cheaply. A clean and securely lidded barrel can beperforated with several rows of holes for drainage and air circulation, filled with compostingmaterials and rolled every few days to mix the contents. Local authorities will often havesales of plastic composters for a reasonable sum but you can build your own for a fewpounds and a bit of effort. A three-chambered system is very efficient for fast composting. Itholds large amounts of compost as an assembly line, having three batches of compost invarying stages. The compost material is started in the first cell and allowed to react for 3 to6 weeks.

Next, it is turned into the middle cell for another 4 to 8 weeks, while a new batch ofmaterial is started in the first bin. Finally, the material in the middle bin is moved to the lastbin as nearly finished compost and then left until finished composting, usually another 5 to 16weeks. Each cell is five feet by three feet and about four to five feet high. This volume is idealfor maintaining heat and at the same time is manageable for turning. Build with open sides toaid air circulation and slats at the front to give easy access to the contents for turning.

Bewdley LibraryI hope the big freeze hasgone by now and that I’m notstill hobbling down to work, taking ten minutes at the endof my journey to take off mygloves, take off my coat, takeoff my hat, take off myglasses, pull my neck warmerover my head, put my glassesback on, take off my boots and woolly socks, puton my working shoes and sort out my hair. I’mexhausted before I start.

Who Pays the Ferryman?... we need your memories.

The 2010 Friends of Bewdley MuseumAnnual Exhibition will feature the ferrieswhich used to operate in and aroundBewdley. The exhibition is largely inspiredby the interest which developed afterDavid Griffiths gave the well loved ArleyFerry its last resting place in Dog Lane,Bewdley. Tourists from far and wide, fromthe UK and as far as Australia have visitedto share memories.

The exhibition will run from Friday 20th August until 26thSeptember in the Wyre Forest Gallery, Bewdley Museum. Tobring the story of our local ferries to life we want yourmemories, your photographs and any movie footage that youmay have. In particular we would like to record yourmemories for sound archives, some will be played at theexhibition.

Here are some examples of the personal memories we havealready received which really bring history to life . . .

83 year old Kathleen Mary Vine brought along photographsof herself and her Grandfather Stanley Bow - ferryman. Shewas amazed to see we had been given a photograph of her

Aunt Emily.

Carl Price emailed the most wonderful image of his Mum and Dad, Johnand Kay Price who got married at St Peter’s Church, Arley and used theferry to travel to their reception at the Harbour Inn.

Tom Whatmore, one of the last Whatmores of Upper Arley emailed tosay the last boatmen to work the ferry were Fred Whatmore and BertEvans.

In 2008 George Nightingale gave us the anchor ofthe last Arley Ferry and this will be on display duringthe exhibition. Maxie Lavan gave us the last twotickets ever issued on the ferry’s last trip on 22ndJanuary 1972. There will be other items including awonderful model of the last ferry on show duringthe exhibition.

We would love to add to these memories with yourown.

For more information please contact LizCowley at Bewdley Musuem 01299 403573 orPenny and David Griffiths on 01299 404912.

River IceThere was ice in the Severn on the9th of January. It reminded me ofsomething I read recently: "Inwinter fogs, with ice swirling downthe racing brown river, Bewdley canbe a bleak place". In 1641, JohnTaylor, famed for his poetry aboutrivers and therefore nicknamed the"Water Poet", came on a trip upthe Severn. At Bewdley, he lodgedat the 'Pyde Bull'. "I went fromBewdley, being an extreame rainyday". It was early August. So the weather can be miserable inour town in the winter and thesummer, but does it matter? Weknow that the warmth of our placedepends upon the people. This isfar from being a 'bleak place' tolive.Heather FlackTaylor did spell extreme as extreame;it is not my mis-spelling.

Dear Readers,

Christmas and New Year in Bewdley werenotable only in that for the first time inyears we saw some snow over the festiveperiod. That and the cold have stayed withus with a vengeance, but despite all theslithering and slipping and the apparent in-ability of the Country to cope, those of uson the wrong side of 40 will remember farworse conditions in winters of old. Perhapswe have become soft as a result of theglobally-warmed winters of the past 20years, or maybe it is too easy now to quoteHealth & Safety as a reason for not coping.

We have received many complaints aboutgritting of rural and estate roads, all ofwhich we pass on to Highways (despite theapparent belief of some callers, the policedo not grit roads. The boot of a panda willnot hold enough). There is only a certainamount of road salt available, and a limitednumber of vehicles and staff to spread it.The consequence is that apart from mainroads and bus routes, most other roads willnever be gritted. If that affects you, then youmust take whatever measures are necessaryto cope with it. At this time of year theweather is most likely to catch us out. Ifyou have not prepared your home, your carand yourself, don’t blame anyone else if you

suffer. A little common sense will go a longway.

The traffic delays in Bewdley town centredue to the water and gas mains renewalswill continue until mid-May. These will becarried out in 5 phases, affecting at varioustimes sections of Load St, High St andDowles Rd. Although the contractors willtry to maintain a flow of traffic, it will bevery slow. Shops and businesses will remainopen, but if your intention is merely to passstraight through the town, use the bypass. The fewer vehicles there are in the town, the better it will be for everyone.

The first PACT meeting of 2010 will be heldin the comfort of the Baptist Church inHigh St. at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday 3rdMarch. No doubt the road works will be atopic of conversation. If the panel cannotanswer your questions, we will refer themto someone who can. We hope to see youthere.

Look out for our surgeries in the YouthCafé, or join Neighbourhood Watch forregular updates on criminal activity locally. Itwill cost you nothing except a little timeand interest.

Best wishes for a safe and secure 2010.

A lifetime of memoriesSitting in St Anne’s Church onChristmas Day brings a lifetime ofmemories flooding back.

Christened (I don’t remember it!) andconfirmed there, racing in the aisle withmy little brother, dark winters’ eveningsat choir practice and evensong.

On Sunday mornings, I clutched onecoin for the collection and another to buy sweets atMadeley’s after the service. We sat in the front row withmy father (and his shopping basket full of hymnbooks) until we were old enough to join thechoir one by one.

I remember Mr Montague-Youens telling beautifully illustrated stories and Robert Gibbsmaking us laugh. I gained a lifelong love of church music through the choir and I value mymemories of singing in Worcester, Llandaff and Coventry cathedrals.

People haven’t changed – lots of faces I don’t know, but Bewdley is still as friendly as ever. There are still a few people I know and I love seeing them once a year when I come to visit. Imiss the choir stalls. I know that the space is more useful now but they were old friends inwhich I had many a huddled giggle with choir pals.

My siblings and I are scattered to the four winds – Jonathan in Cambridge, Tiffany in Picardy,Gerard in St Helens and me in Berlin, but we share fond and abiding memories of a happychildhood in Bewdley and St Anne’s.

WAR MEMORIESHetty remembers being a tiny person in a tiny school in Wribbenhall duringthe Second World War. I think it must have been over at the side of theBlack Boy, for she says the Air Raid Shelter was very near - at Styles’s Millwhere they sold seeds, and where there are houses now. Someone wouldsay it was time for an air raid practice - I don’t think anyone made a sirennoise - and the children would grab their gas masks and pile into theshelter. It was a small one, just for the school, Hetty says, and she didn’tlike it one bit. For one thing, it was so dark, and the masks themselveswere frightening. No-one explained what the gas did - just that it wasdangerous.

They had to go in a crocodile - two by two. She can’t remember if she alwayswalked with a special friend. Once they were shown the “gas mask” for babies, somethinglike a holdall the whole baby was put into. After a while, a teacher would say “Let’s pretendit’s the All Clear!” and back they went to school. After one air raid a lot of shrapnel wasfound on the Rifle Range, she says. But she can’t think of any others locally.

Hetty as told to Jane Moreton

Late in 2005, after a spate of various illnesses, I found myself unable to walk without the aidof a walking stick. Earlier that year, a consultant neurologist had given me an ultimatum, Icould either end up in a wheelchair or lose my sight. For me there was no question ofmobility overriding my sense of sight. Incidentally, I was already blind in one eye.

At the time, we were living in Hampshire. After a lot of deliberation, it was decided that weshould move nearer one of our daughters and we soon found a ground floor retirement flatin Bewdley within four miles of our youngest daughter.

At this time in December 2005, I was still just able to walk with a walking stick.Unfortunately, one Sunday morning whilst attending a Palm Sunday Service, I suddenly lost theuse of my right leg and, thanks to all the good folk who helped, managed to get back home.

So, I ended up in the wheelchair which the neurologist had predicted. It was only then thatwe appreciated how ‘wheelchair unfriendly’ Bewdley is !! I guess you cannot have a beautifulhistorical town without having to sacrifice amenities for the disabled. Although most of theshops are now inaccessible, I can still get into St Anne’s where I appreciate and enjoy theservices plus the friendliness of the congregation.

Our daughter is very good to us and despite her workload as a GP,takes us out every week which is a great treat. My husband and I aremembers of DFAS and the National Trust and I am a member of TheMothers Union and Women’s Own. All in all, we both love the area andfeel very blessed to be living in such a beautiful part of the country.

Glamorous life of an opera singer

The editor has been on at me for sometime to write some pieces cataloguing 'theglamorous life of an opera singer.'

This is not easy for me, because although Ihave been earning enough to pay incometax for too many years as an opera singer,it doesn't seem to me that I have been atthe 'glamorous' end. By this I mean thatalthough I might have to use an aeroplaneto get to the venue, I have never flown first- or even business - class. It's true for somesingers that audiences come to hear them

in 'it doesn't much matter what'. In mycase, the audience comes to hear theopera; not to hear me!

However, looking back over the years, there are one or two tales to tell.

Sorry, but I dare not say the names of thesingers, or even of the companies involved.

So watch this space, and I’ll take youbackstage at the opera, and tell you aboutthe singer who ended up in a railway siding, how the leading lady was wrestled offstageby a singer, and even my experience ofamorous encounters on stage.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return.

This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted. We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-

fairs were correct. If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you free

of charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial. Penn & Co

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4TH JANUARY 2010

Town Council Budget for 2010/11

The Council agreed that there should be NO increase in the level of Council Tax levied onhouseholders. That will mean for an average (Band D) householder the amount allocated toTown Council functions will remain at £21.67.

However, having built up an adequate level of reserves in recent years and having spentcautiously this year, the Town Council will still be able to increase its actual expenditure nextyear by 2% for the benefit of all residents and businesses.

Internal Auditor

The Council is looking for a new Internal Auditor following the retirement of Mr RobertWhale after many years of service. The Council agreed to advertise for a successor, with aview to him/her taking up the role as from 1st April.

Please see advert in this edition of The Bridge for further details

Christmas Lights

Members of the Council were pleased with the success of the Christmas Lights that hadbeen in place in the town centre for five weeks over the Christmas/New Year period. Theyfelt that the cost of having them installed and maintained, the cost of the electricity and thegrant made available to the Lights Committee to help run the Festival on 5th December waswell worth while.

Next year thanks to a grant from the County Council’s Economy Action Group, we shallpurchase some additional low energy lights and displays to add to the attraction.

Ribbesford

Though technically outside Bewdley’s boundary, the Town Council were glad of theopportunity to comment on the draft Conservation Appraisal produced by Wyre ForestDistrict Council on the Ribbesford Hamlet.

They were glad of the recognition that the historic character of Ribbesford should bemaintained but the continued neglect of Ribbesford House itself was a matter of concern.

Spectacular! That’s what the forest landscapeis at time of writing, with a brilliant blue skyand blanket of sparkling snow that invites tocome and play.

The garden birds are busy on the feedersand bird table, maximising their chances tofill up and fight the cold, but in the forestthere seems to be less activity. With littlenatural food on offer the best choice is toconserve energy.

However the snow reveals the tracks ofrabbits, squirrels and smaller rodentsforaging about and trying to locate their foodstores.

Plenty of deer were moving about last nighttoo, their footprints crossed by the tyremarks of an early mountain biker.

Is it dogs or badgers that push their wayunder the barbed wire to get into theorchard? The arrangement of toes in thefootprints suggests badgers and a tuft of wiryhairs caught on a barb confirm it.

Badgers are one of the species that havehollow hair to help insulate them against thecold (so do deer). I’m not sure if thisimproves its usefulness for paintbrushes andshaving brushes (and sporrans!)

At this time of the year badgers give theirsetts a spring clean – if you are lucky enoughto know the whereabouts of a badger familyyou may see them digging new chambers, pushing out old bedding and gathering fresh. This is in readiness for the arrival of thecubs, also in February.

By the time you read this there will also becatkins and snowdrops to remind you ofspring’s approach.

Be the first to notice by joining the regularHealth Walks in the forest each Tuesdayand Sunday at 11am.

The Discovery Centre has two events foryou to join this half-term holiday:

Tuesday 16th February Make one, take one

Children aged 5 to 11 are invited to help usmake some displays ready for the NewCommunity Discovery Centre (openingsoon!).

There will be finger-painting, clay work andmany other craft projects to contribute to,with a chance to take some home too.10.30am – 12.00noon, £3.50 per child –places must be booked.

Friday 19th February Dusk Walk

A chance for families with children aged 8and above to observe nocturnal creatures atthe deer hide after a short drive through theforest.

Meet at the Visitor Centre at 4pm, finishes at6pm. Wear warm clothes and bring a torch.£5 per person or £15 for a family ticketcovering 2 adults and 2 children. Places mustbe booked.

There is also a Deer Watch on 16thMarch for adults only. This event costs £6and lasts from 4pm to 7pm.

I used to help out at a centre up north, where one of my jobs was to entertain in theevening. I used to sing Mike Harding songs until I looked across the room one day to see– Mike Harding. That shut me up.Keith James

During the 1966 General Election I was teaching in Devon and persuaded the threecandidates to share a platform at the school. The next day the young Tory candidate,Michael Heseltine, saw me and asked anxiously how I thought it had gone. He went onhis way and duly won a safe seat - for some obscure reason, he never sought my adviceagain. James Hickson

Rowing-talkIf you row, spoons and blades are nothing to do with cutlery, andin a boat there is always someone stroking, which is not as oddas it sounds! So here are a few rowing-speak terms in English…

Boat - you guessed it, boat!

Bow - the front of the boat. (Only confusing because the rowers are all facing away from it,so it looks like the back!)

Stern - the back of the boat. (Only confusing because the rowers are facing towards it soit looks like the front).

Blade - oar.

Spoon - the flat-ish coloured part of the oar that goes in the water.

Loom - the long bit of the oar between the handle and the spoon.

Scull - oar if you are in a sculling boat, or the verb means to row with a blade in eachhand.

Sweep – rowing where each crew member has one blade and they sit in the boat with theoars on alternate sides.

Bowside - where the rowers sit with blades out to their left.

Strokeside - where rowers sit with blades out to the right.

Stroke - the rower at the back (looks like the front) of the boat, who sets the pace forthe rest of the crew. This is called Stroking the Boat.

Feathering - where the spoons are turned to be level with the water between the end ofone stroke and the beginning of the next.

Square - the spoon is at right angles to the water (eg at the end of astroke)

Catch - the very beginning of the stroke where the spoon enters thewater.

Beer/Wine - essential.
