J ean Barker, our Sunshine Lady, is retiring this month. The Staff and Members of the Oak Harbor Senior Center express their thanks for the many hours of service she has given. Whenever a member has been ill, underwent surgery, experienced a loss or made a donation, Jean sent a card. Twice a week Jean would check the list at the front desk for names then send a card. Whenever someone makes a donation to the Memorial Fund, Jean sends the thank-you card. Jean has been a member and volunteer at the Center since 1987. “I star- ted taking exercise classes and thought, I ought to get involved.” Jean and her husband Frank came to Oak Harbor in 1965 with the Navy. Frank retired in 1978. When the Oak Harbor Senior Center opened in 1986, Jean volunteered at the Front Desk as a receptionist for several years until her husband Frank died in 1996. Frank was the Post Commander of the VFW and was carrying the American Flag during the 4th of July Parade in Oak Harbor when he suffered a fatal heart attack. He did not let go of the flag as he was falling, until someone grabbed it. He would not allow the flag to touch the ground. Jean continued to serve on the Coordinating Committee, volunteer for special events, serving meals for the MOW program and participate in the exercise classes. She became our Sunshine Lady in 2001. Through all the challenges she has faced with health, loss, family, and financial, Jean brings sunshine into our lives with her smiles and love. Thank you Jean. Barb Spence, a new Wednesday afternoon receptionist, is our new Sunshine Lady. If you know of a member of the Center that could use a little sunshine, please call or stop by the Front Desk and let us know. March 2012 | Vol. 3 | Issue 11 the Bridge LIFE . HEALTH . There’s an email story where a man describes the wonderful retirement life he and his wife are enjoying in their new home. The first snow was so beautiful. They sat in their jammies, drinking hot cocoa and enjoying the snowflakes coming down. A White Christmas. The next morning it was exciting to be out shoveling snow, getting exercise, talking to neighbors. More snow, more shoveling and then the snow plows blocking the driveways, more shoveling. By the end of the story the wife had left and he was being medicated. Yeah? Well here’s my Oak Harbor version of being snow bound.

Day One-Sunday: New Snow, church is cancelled. Have family

prayer and scripture reading. Hot cocoa, Tomorrow is a holiday, no school, no work, get to sleep in. Maybe visit best friend in Alaska soon. It’s so pretty. Pot roast, vegetables and homemade rolls for dinner. Bedtime after midnight.

Day Two: Monday: More Snow. Martin Luther King Day. No school. No work. No worries about getting to work. The Princess is excited to make Frosty. Granddad (Mr. Volunteer) goes out with her and Mama is taking pictures. Nana is making hot cocoa. Princess makes Frosty, gets cold and wet. Comes in. Gets in warm bath, has cocoa. Change of dry clothes. Snuggle and read books together. How fun. Real, quality family time. Pantry still well stocked. Snow will probably be gone tomorrow. Don’t think a visit to Alaska is in the future. Beef Stew and biscuits for dinner. Bedtime 10:00 pm.

Day Three Tuesday: Snow is deep. School cancelled. Boss calls. Come in late. Let roads clear up. Get to work, find lone pool player. How did he get here? Para-Transit. Fifteen phone calls – “Are you opened?” “No, classes and activities are

cancelled.” “Why?” “Because of the snow.” “You’re there.” “I’m staff.” “Can I come in?” “No, we’d rather you stay home and off the streets. It’s not safe.” Para-Transit calls, closing down for the day. Wait, gotta pick up lone pool guy. 2:00 pm, Boss sends us home. More snow on the way. Boss will call in the morning. Need dog sled. Princess made a baby for Frosty. Gets cold and wet. Comes in. Gets in warm bath, has cocoa. Change of dry clothes. Wish there was another gallon of milk just in case there’s still snow tomorrow. Snow Birding sounds fun. Roast chicken with rice pilaf tonight. Bedtime 11:30 pm.

Day Four Wednesday: School cancelled. Call from Boss. Do not come in. Roads bad. Looking forward to a day with family? Princess wants to play in the snow. No one else does. Granddad takes pictures through patio window. Princess takes Frosty apart to build igloo for baby Frosty. Gets cold and wet. Gets in warm bath, has cocoa. Change of dry clothes. Twice. Frosty was re-built. Read stories, color, more stories. Make and decorate 18 cupcakes. Early bedtime. Peace and quiet. Half gallon

of milk left. Arizona anyone? Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches tonight. Bedtime 1:00 am.

Day Five Thursday: School cancelled. Again. “Nana, wake up. It’s morning”. No. It is 6:00 am. Mean Nana won’t let Princess go out to visit the igloo. Call from Boss. Don’t come in. Watch movie, make popcorn. It’s too cold to go outside. Read stories. Build tent. Finally at dusk outside to check igloo. Gets cold and wet. Gets bath, no cocoa. Change into jammies ready for bed. Pizza? Too much snow. No deliveries. Milk is on ration. So are eggs, apple juice, hot cocoa and bananas. 14 cupcakes. Granddad’s voice is loud. Mama’s voice is loud. Nana’s voice is loud. Princess‘s voice is piercing ears. Frosty’s demise is not in the foreseeable future. San Diego looking real good. Top Ramen tonight. Bedtime 8:00 pm.

Day Six Friday: School cancelled. No milk, no bread, no eggs, no juice, some hot cocoa and one banana. Depression sets in. Need chocolate. Boss calls. Come in. Relief. Joy. Hitch up dog sled in record time. Work past closing. Booking a Hawaii Cruise. What’s for dinner? Not my problem.
