PRESIDENT’S REPORT An annual report is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the year gone by, and 2018 has certainly
served up many events and experiences to enable us to do this.
The year started with the significant impact of the Commonwealth Games – when to commence
the season’s fixtures (grass, turf, seniors and juniors) recognising that not only would players and
officials be spectators, but also that many had volunteered to help out for the duration of the
games. It has meant that the playing season has been a little disjointed but thankfully everyone in
the association has worked hard to ensure that we achieved a successful fixture competition.
Once again we have:
• Conducted hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at five turf venues
and two grass venues, for over 3,300 registered players. Player numbers have remained
static or decreased marginally over junior and senior divisions, indicating that we will need to
put some significant effort into addressing this lack of growth in the coming year.
• Sent 19 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, U18, U15, U13 and
Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park. The ability
of these teams is evident in that top two placings were achieved in six of the twelve divisions.
• Continued with the practice of asking clubs to nominate the senior turf divisions they wish to
play in, as well as not setting a limit on the number of dual registered players in a club. I
believe this has improved the competitiveness of our division one teams and we will
continue this policy into 2019.
We have tried to establish a sixth division for senior turf to accommodate club requests. However,
without the extra turf at Burringbar this did not eventuate. Our trial of larger numbers in divisions
5 and 6 was not seen as particularly successful, and will not be continued into 2019.
We continue to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) to administer Hockey Brisbane Inc,
and with BHA and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane
Hockey Management Group (BHMG), which manages the Burringbar turf facility. Progress with
the construction of the second turf at Burringbar has been extremely slow but we are still
optimistic that the second field will be completed for the start of the 2019 season, and the
remaining grass field remediated.
Much effort has gone into pursuing council approval to construct a turf field at Downey Park, with
little success to date. Whilst our efforts to date on this front have not been rewarded, we have
been successful with a number of government grants. We have received $500,000 from the State
Government Female Facility Grants for the construction of an amenities block on Field 10. We
purchased an aerator for use on the Downey Park fields with the $18,100 grant received from the
Gambling Community Benefit Fund. And we have been able to implement a Walking or Wheeling
and Member Development Programs with the $18,130 grant received from the Brisbane City
Council Healthy & Physical Activity Grant. It is very pleasing, and much appreciated, to receive this
funding to improve our facilities and services and our thanks go to both the State Government
and BCC.
8
I would like to thank all the members of my board for their efforts, commitment, enthusiasm, and
good humour during the year. To all the dedicated volunteers at club and association level –
thank you, because without you we would not be able to exist. And last but certainly not least, my
sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA staff for their ongoing support and tremendous
work effort.
Dr Karin Walduck
Vale – Linda Mauchlan
11/05/1921 – 12/11/2017
Being Paddington residents Linda, with her sister Nan played and ran local club Ashgrove in the
1950’s, wearing a blue tunic with a white A on the shoulder, but may also have played for
Kookaburras or Metropolitans prior to that. Many small clubs came and went during the early
years of hockey on Brisbane.
The first record of Linda’s BWHA volunteer service is via the 1941 BWHA Annual Report, from that
time until 1984, she was a driving force at BWHA with her sister Nan.
In 1957 she was awarded Life Membership of BWHA she was the 7th recipient of this honour and
in 1966 was awarded Life Membership of QWHA.
She worked in many BWHA roles and committees including Umpiring, Fixtures, Constitution,
Treasurer, Canteen Convenor and for many years at many levels acted as a Team Manager.
In the 1960’s Linda and Nan moved to Valley Hockey Club and organised the Sunday morning
training sessions for the club, they also acted as coaches, umpires and selectors. Linda was the
club secretary & club delegate to BWHA from 1964 – 1966.
Through the 70’s & 80’s they continued with their heavy involvement at BWHA and QWHA level.
Linda and Nan were seen across the state and country at many hockey tournaments, and many in
the hockey community referred to them as the “Twins” despite Linda being the younger sister.
9
Linda was a wonderful volunteer, loved hockey at all levels, encouraged and supported young
people in our sport and was a great friend to many. She has left a legacy of outstanding volunteer
service to hockey and sadly her passing sees an end to an era.
VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT Obtaining development approval for a synthetic surface at Downey Park continues to be a challenge. We are still working with Council and other stakeholders to obtain the necessary approvals. GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT
The 2017 Board of Management held 5 planning meetings in October and November 2017 to
consider the rules and procedures identified during the season. We asked the clubs for their input
through a questionnaire, the responses were used to make changes to rules and processes for
2018.
The 84th Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 28th November 2017. Awards recognising
the valuable role volunteers play in our association were given out with special mention to our
Volunteers of the Year Andrew Blanchard (Promotion of the Game) and Bruce Carroll (Saturday
competitions assistant). The Management Committee remained constant reducing in number by
1 with Kris Birch not renominating. Kris has been a great worker on the committee especially in
the area of governance – creating job descriptions for all volunteer positions, which are now in
the Operations Manual.
A small group of interested members meet at the end of the season to look at ways to enhance
our turf competition, the early nomination of teams has allowed clubs to better organise, retain
and recruit players but what more could we do for clubs and members. It was determined to look
to maximise “club days” working with BHA to have men’s and women’s games from the same club
together whenever possible. Many more club days were held this year, but the limitations with
venues, mixed division numbers, and the TV games did not make it possible every week. Clubs
also asked if the women’s games could be played in order ie Div. 3 (noon), Div. 2 (1.30), Div. 1
(3.00) or Div. 1 (4.30), Div. 2 (6.00), Div. 3 (7.30) for easier substitution, this resulted in Division 3
having most of their games at 12noon or 7.30pm – clubs will be asked if they want this to
continue in 2019.
The Management Committee met in December to appoint convenors to committees. During this
“off-season” period much work was done on the Strategic Plan to make it more concise,
achievable and relevant for season 2018.
We also spent many hours completing a grant application for the new “Female Facility Grants”
being offered by the Department of Sport and Recreation, this was a significant grant for
$500,000.00. The application was complex and detailed and our thanks to John Giles from John
Giles and Associates for his assistance in the plan and application preparation. The application
was to replace the old sheds on the Noble Street side of the park with a new amenities block. I am
very pleased to report that this grant application was successful and so work will be started on
this project in 2019. We also received funding from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund for
an Aerator to improve our grass fields, and funds from the BCC Active and Healthy Community to
10
run programs to improve inclusiveness and a healthy life style. Thank you to all who assisted with
these grant applications and thank you to the government departments who make the funds
available to assist not for profit groups like ours, without this funding many projects could not
happen.
In 2017 the formation of Hockey Brisbane Inc. an association to manage the activities BHA &
BWHA do together was finalised. The driver for this was the potential management of the SHC as
Hockey Queensland looked to divest itself of the facility. Unfortunately Hockey Queensland
during 2018 decided not to proceed with this course and will remain the leasees for the turf area
in the foreseeable future. Hockey Brisbane then turned its focus to the areas that we work
together in and what we can do better to improve the hockey experience of all in Brisbane. This
year we have met every month and discussed items like Rules, Grand Finals, Development,
Fixtures and Facilities. Our close collaboration will continue to achieve the best for hockey in
Brisbane.
Our first Council meeting for the calendar year was on the 30th January 2018 and as always was
very busy discussing:
• BHMG – installation of a second hybrid turf at the facility.
• Adjusting the Competitions & Payment Form – removing the umpires as this form was not an
efficient way to manage this.
• The impact the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast would have on our competition –
clubs voted not to play while this event was on, so people could volunteer, watch & support
the games.
• Providing information and important dates to get the season on the way.
The Junior Committee had some new members bringing their committee to 6 in 2018, Lynne,
Rebecca, Maree, Judy, Alyson & Tash. Tash continued in the position of Chairperson. This is a
large section of our association and many decisions need to be made, this year they worked hard
in the area of umpire development. Thank you all for your hard work and good humour in
working through this demanding area of our association. It would be great to see more people on
this committee to ensure our juniors continue to develop and grow.
The affiliations for the Senior Turf teams were submitted at the end of 2017, this provided for 6
divisions on turf, however when confirmation was requested in February 2018, a number of clubs
withdrew teams and then others added teams, this caused a major reshuffle and we reverted to 5
divisions with divisions 4 & 5 being 14 and 13 teams respectively, this required an unusual format
of playing one large first round and then splitting the divisions into two pools for a second round,
the higher pool in each division playing for the Division trophies and the lower pool playing a
round robin & finals games for a B Pool winner. We hope clubs can provide correct requests in
2018 for 2019, so three divisions (4, 5, 6) can be introduced in 2019. We also wanted to equalise
the divisions on Downey Park Grass so all divisions had at least 8 teams in them. With the impact
of the Commonwealth Games this did not occur in 2018, but will hopefully happen in 2019. The
Monday Masters continues to grow with 4 divisions playing every Monday night. Our volunteer
grading & fixture committees work really hard to get the best outcome for all players, they have
been listening more than ever to clubs and their suggestions, thanks Di Brodie, Kellie Roberts and
11
your many committees and members for being so accommodating and thorough in this
important task.
The IMG Sportingpulse database continues to cause us issues with its limitations and inability to
provide reports to support our rules. At the time of writing this report Hockey Australia is still
looking at what database they will be using in 2019 and what changes to the current practices this
will create. Thank you to Bron Morris & Sue Barsby who have worked hard in this space to make
improvements for us. It is sad to note that Sue Barsby after 15 years of part-time then full-time
work will be leaving us at the end of September 2018, she will assist with some training and
casual days, but she is off on a new life adventure and we wish her every success and happiness in
the future, but she will be missed.
Umpiring continues to be a major area in our sport, how do we encourage more people to take on
this role, how do we reward and protect them. In recent years BWHA has Amy Ryan in the office
looking after the co-ordination of umpire accreditation, she works with our Umpires & Technical
Committee, Clubs and Umpire Coaches to try and increase the quality and quantity of umpires in
our association. Sonya Fisher has many hats in the association, Treasurer, HockeyZone Liaison
Officer, Grants Officer and Umpire & Technical Committee Convenor and with her committee
invested many hours developing umpires and technical officials. With so many turf fixtures at so
many venues it is a difficult task covering all games, thanks to Jenny Heron and Lisa Donaldson for
achieving this, this year. It should be noted that many BWHA volunteers travel to officiate at
hockey tournaments across the state, country and the world - congratulations and thank you, for
without your efforts many of our events could not happen.
Once the fixtures are completed, the umpires and technical officials appointed, the Match
Secretaries have the difficult job of ensuring all players are playing within our rules. It is
challenging with around 3500 members in 4 competitions across hundreds of teams. We rely
heavily on club volunteers to do the correct thing, but our Match Secretaries eagle eyes are still
required. Thank you Christine Blanchard, Sue Reid & the Junior Committee for looking after our
competitions, we live in hope that eventually we will have a database that alleviates all the
manual work.
Casual staff member Noala Gordon and contractor John Robinson do an enormous amount of
work all year round to have our grass fields ready for competition. As large inner city parks, open
to the public, it is a challenge to keep football boots from ripping up the fields, dogs from leaving
their manure on the fields, if you can think of it, it has probably happened at Downey or Rasey
Parks - well done and thanks to Noala & John on a job well done. Work on the park never stops
and we appreciate the cooperation with Downey Park Netball and Brisbane Softball – we all love
the park and work hard to look after it. Parking continues to be a major issue at the precinct and
we discuss this with the BCC at every opportunity. Christine Blanchard is still working on the “Turf
at Downey Park” project; she should be commended on her perseverance and dedication. We
also thank all clubs who enthusiastically assist and complete their working bee tasks – every job
performed by volunteers is money saved on fees.
The grass fixtures commenced in April and the park was full every Saturday catering for every
level and age in our sport – well done to all who played, officiated or supported in 2018. Our
player numbers plateaued this year, with turf team numbers growing, but we still have a great
12
need for our grass fields from U7 to 70+ age groups. We had fewer initial registrations, but late
registrations after the Commonwealth Games saw us about the same number as 2017. We had
more Casual 5 and 10 players and many playing 2 or more competitions. We continued with some
men’s games at Downey Park and women’s grass games went to Finsbury Pk and the Dorrington
Pk – everyone seems to enjoy this. This promotes the sport as a whole of life and family sport –
the whole family can participate for the whole of their lives. Hockey Players need to better
promote our sport to the outside world if we want to compete in this competitive recreation
market.
On a personal note I was very fortunate to be selected to be part of the Commonwealth Games
Baton Relay and was well supported by my family and many friends from the hockey fraternity
who came out to watch, and HockeyZone who filmed it – thanks Paul. What an amazing
experience, one I was very honoured to be a part of. The Commonwealth Games stopped hockey
in Brisbane for 2 weeks as we had many volunteers and spectators involved, well done to all who
participated in any way.
In August the decision was taken to not renew the contract for HockeyZone in its current format
in 2019, this has been a big cost impost on both BHA & BWHA for the past 10 years. BHA & BWHA
started the television promotion of hockey as a means to encourage hockey as a sport to gain a
higher media profile. We had hoped that our start would move to the regional, state and national
levels, unfortunately this has not come to fruition and those parent associations have taken other
pathways. While many people around Australian and the world love and support HockeyZone the
full burden of cost has been on the members of BHA & BWHA and our loyal sponsors, this is
something that cannot be justified going forward. BWHA is investigating having some media
content in 2019 including some limited HockeyZone work, but the final amount and content is yet
to be decided. HockeyZone would not have been the success it has been without the dedication
and drive of Paul Mills, he is a dynamo working at all levels to promote our game, which until 10
years ago, he knew very little about. Over the years Paul has also used his son and media students
to film the hockey, and hockey “lovers” have provide the expert commentary, skill and rules
sessions. Thank you to everyone who has played a role big or small in this work.
It was wonderful not to conduct a Judiciary this year, but a number of people had to be spoken to
about their behaviour especially on Saturday morning by our “Pink Vest” Duty Supervisors. We all
must ensure the behaviour of our members and supporters is appropriate, so we can all enjoy the
sport we love. Thank you to all junior parents and supporters who assisted on Saturday mornings.
Thank you to our Downey Park staff: Canteen Convenor Abby and the counter staff; Bar – Jess;
Admin – Lorraine; Time Stewards Chang/Shona; Rookie – Jess, First Aid – John, Courtney, Steph &
Lauren; the Saturday grass fixtures could not run as smoothly without you. A special thanks to
Volunteer Bruce Carroll who assists every week at Downey Park, opening and closing the facility
and any other jobs asked of him. At the beginning of 2018 John Thomas advised he would be
stepping down from the Sports Trainer role at Downey Park a role he has held for 25 years. John
has not only done his sports training but has assisted in opening and closing the facility ever week.
Thank you John for all your work and commitment you will be missed.
We are again looking at the value of Council Meetings, with everyone leading such busy lives,
having a meeting when the same information can be easily dealt with by electronic means seems
13
a waste of resources. We will continue to only hold Council Meetings when needed and provide
Management Reports after every Management Meeting to keep our members informed.
Management meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, so club queries can be dealt with in a
timely manner. Thank you to all club delegates for giving up your time to attend meetings.
We developed, trialled, selected, trained and toured 19 representative teams this year. What a
major workload for our staff and volunteers. Thank you to all involved, the results and statistics
are later in this report. Thank you to Regie, Amy & Sue for all your hard work, to all selectors,
coaches, manager and umpires, you are all vital to make this happen for our players – well done.
We also continued to offer development opportunities for goal keepers, masters and grass level
players, all were very well supported, thank you to the coaches for their time and expertise. This
year an inclusive program was offered at Downey Park late in the season the “WOW” Walking or
Wheeling program was to provide modified forms of hockey that anyone can play, we hope this is
the start of something great.
In 2018 BWHA celebrated its 85th Birthday a small celebration was held at Downey Park in August
and Life Members, Australian Players and club officials invited to attend. The Archive Committee
are working tirelessly to get photos of all Brisbane based Australian Players to hang in the
clubhouse, to date we have 12 framed photos. Thank you to our Archive Committee, Life
Members and long-term supporters for continuing to work for BWHA, documenting the
important history we have and organising social events. Special thanks to Ronda, Jenny, Tracey &
Sue and Keith Nix for hanging the photos and memorabilia.
Late last year Life Member Linda Mauchlan passed away aged 96; early in the year Don Mecklem
former Australia player, coach of BWHA schoolgirls teams and husband of Life Member Joyce
Mecklem passed away and as I type this report the sad news of Jim Quaite OAM’s passing has just
reached the hockey community. Jim was the first HQ President and SHC President and he coached
many state teams and was a mentor to many. He and wife Elsie have been staples in the
Queensland hockey fraternity for decades.
Our sincere condolences to all our members who have suffered loss this year, and we
congratulate those who have experienced great joy and exciting events. The hockey family is a
large and varied one and we share in the highs and lows of our sporting family.
Thank you to the many volunteers that support our sport, especially to our President Dr Karin
Walduck, she is an outstanding volunteer, mentor and leader and we are very lucky to have her.
Thank you to the staff members casual, part-time and full time who all provide a great service to
our sport. Thank you to the government departments and sponsors who allow us to grow and
develop with support, both financial and in-kind.
Kathleen Proctor General Manager
TREASURER’S REPORT
Thanks as always to Kath and the team who support her in the BWHA office, they do an amazing job in keeping our bills paid, income followed up and the books kept up to date. We should be very proud of the way that BWHA maintains its finances.
14
The full audited Financial Statements for the year ending 30 Sept 2018 are at the end of this annual report. Overall our financial position remained stable
• Revenue was approx. $1.4m
• Turf hire fees stayed at approx. 20% of our total expenses (one of the reasons why we continue to push to get our own turf at Downey Park)
• Net profit was in line with the previous year at $16,222 (1.2% of total income) after depreciation allowance of $50,957
• We received income from grants of $206k (noting that not all of the underlying work relating to the grants was undertaken in the 17/18 FY)
To continue to be successful with our grant applications and to ensure that we are heard by all levels of Government, particularly in respect to matters that have a material impact on BWHA members, we have continued to work with and inform our political representatives including:
• BCC – Cr Andrew Wines (Downey Park) and Cr Vicki Howard (Rasey Park)
• State – Hon Tim Nicholls MP

Hockey Zone 2018 In July 2018, BWHA / BHA made the following announcement in respect to Hockey Zone: “Brisbane Hockey Assoc. and Brisbane Women’s Hockey Assoc. confirmed in late July 2018 that Hockey Zone would not be continued in 2019. Our associations began our relationship with Paul Mills in 2009 when we first televised our fixtures via Briz31/QCTV. This association continued when Paul brought us a proposal to televise games and segments for the expanded Hockey Zone format. Over the years Paul has filmed and streamed BHA and BWHA games and finals, HQ state championship games / finals and AHL and U21s for Hockey Australia (I have probably forgotten something else that was covered, but I hope Paul will forgive me). We are thankful to Paul and the team that he cajoled into turning up each week, got Hockey Zone on air year after year. Some of the people who gave freely of their time include Tom Whetton (if he wasn’t there for week 1 then it must have been week 2), Bernadette Pangrazio (who is now recognised globally as the “Rules Guru”), Peter Smith, Michael Smith, Tony Hurley, Graham Taylor, Clare Comerford and the 2018 Rules Gurus, Kerryl Chandler and Tara Leonard (we know we haven’t covered everyone so please forgive us if your name isn’t there). We are also thankful to the sponsors, who over the years have helped to reduce the cost of the show (that ultimately is paid for by our Brisbane members) – without you we wouldn’t have been able to keep the show on air (in some form) for some 10 years!
15
Yes, it was been 10 years now that we have been doing our bit to raise the profile of the sport that we all love, hockey, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and the world (the latter was brought home to us by a recent message from a hockey player in Argentina who told us that if she wants to brush up on a skill she always goes to Hockey Zone first)!!. So for a little program / idea born in Brisbane we have had a very far reach. But we also wanted to increase hockey’s exposure and attract new players in Brisbane and unfortunately, the majority of the people who watched Hockey Zone came from within the local, state, national and international hockey communities. So while it was appreciated by these communities we didn’t see a material increase in our Brisbane participation rates. We were also never able to get support from Australian State or National hockey bodies to be able to either continue Hockey Zone or to hand the concept over to one of those bodies to take it to the next level. So the decision was taken by BHA and BWHA to not renew our agreement with Paul for the 2019 season. The decision to discontinue Hockey Zone is in no way a reflection of the quality of the product that has been produced for us by Paul, but instead was a decision based on financial and business criteria. It has also been a tough decision as we have always been aware that Paul was one of the reasons that the show kept going; as without his drive, energy and enthusiasm Hockey Zone would not have made it to 10 years, and all from a man who had no involvement with hockey prior to 2009. So we would like to take this very public opportunity to thank Paul (and his family) for his dedication over so many years and also to wish him well in his future pursuits.” Change in decision – Hockey Zone to continue in 2019 But, when in September 2018, it became apparent that BWHA members thought we had made the wrong decision, we spoke to Paul about what Hockey Zone 2019 could look like if just BWHA proceeded and subsequently the BWHA Board agreed to continue with Hockey Zone. So we are now working with Paul in respect to how we can deliver Hockey Zone segments and livestreamed BWHA games / highlights in 2019 – noting it might be under a different name in 2019 – so keep an eye out the new and improved Hockey Zone! Sonya Fisher BWHA Hockey Zone Liaison DATABASE & SOCIAL MEDIA This year has seen a continuance of our frustrations with the reporting & event functionality of the Sports TG system. With Hockey Australia committing to extend the relationship with Sports TG, we are hopeful that the new Game Day platform will address at least some of our concerns. We are currently still waiting for access to the platform, so turf fixture planning for 2019 may need to be done outside of Game Day. We are investigating how best to use the various online social media platforms to both communicate with existing members and educate the wider community on the various hockey options that the BWHA/BHA clubs can provide. There has been discussion around:
• How to design the Hockey Brisbane Incorporate (HBI) web presence to be the best first touch point for hockey in Brisbane for new and returning players and then to subsequently link to clubs
16
• How to assist clubs to improve their social media presence
• How best to share relevant content between the BWHA, BHA and the Brisbane Hockey Facebook pages
• The use of Instagram and Snapchat to advertise current events
• How to engage our members to assist with the provision of quality content to showcase our sport #BrisHockey
We are keen for as much input as possible in this space, so please email any great ideas to [email protected] or feel free to join the working group.

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING - TURF
In Turf in 2018 across the 5 turf divisions we played 539 games for the season and that is not including finals. When you look at it that way it may give you a small insight into the amount of effort that goes into keeping our completion going and the 2018 season was always going to be challenging with the decision not to play fixtures during the Com games 3week period. Whilst it was important for games volunteers and spectators to have the chance to participate in the games it made fitting in all of our fixtures in the allotted timeframe interesting! 2018 turf season began with an attempt to establish a division 6. At the end of club affiliations there were enough teams to play with 6 divisions. However, with a couple of late teams withdrawing from Sunday divisions meant we needed to trial two large divisions 4 and 5. The result of final affiliations was division 4 with 14 teams and division 5 with 13. As a result Management decided to trial splitting the divisions after round 1. This gave the teams that finished round 1 in the top 7/8 respectively played in the competition for division finals and the reserve grades played off for a plate so they were able to play the full number of fixtures. Another first this year was organising fixtures based on Club requests for:
• Home and away games - therefore giving Clubs more opportunities to play together
• Division 1, 2, 3 playing in order- the majority of clubs requested this so teams could support each other more easily.
• Club days....working more collaboratively with BHA to align fixtures to give clubs more games together.
Part of our early planning for fixtures also included the second turf at Burringbar. However, as that did not come online in 2018, we had to rework the fixtures and it changed the flexibility that was originally hoped for with the additional turf. Clubs and Grading / Affiliations For Clubs that are intending to add a team in 2019 you need to ensure that you have sufficient players, coaches and umpires locked in early so we don’t have teams withdrawing late from the process. Again this year, the teams to compete in finals was decided by the last fixtures rounds and teams are a lot more competitive than in the past. This again highlights clubs now have the certainty to build their teams no matter where they finished the year before and continue to build on the work of previous years. We have also made efforts to engage with clubs to see what will assist them to build and grow as we believe it is important to try and find a balance between club/players’ desires and the restrictions and requirements of fixtures. The process is certainly not perfect, but if we continue to work together with a bit of give and take, we can achieve the best outcomes for our players, clubs and for hockey. Congratulations to all the teams who made finals, our Minor Premiers and Premiers for all the divisions. And a huge thanks to office staff Kath, Lisa and to Sue Barsby who will be sorely missed as she begins a new chapter in her life. To the turf committee Jenny Heron, Liz Lobb and Lucy Smith thank you for your hard work and dedication.

COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING – GRASS
The 2018 season got off to a late start due to the timing of Easter and the Commonwealth Games. There were fewer teams nominating for the five divisions that play at Downey Park each Saturday afternoon. There are usually no problems creating 10 team divisions in the lower grades and this season was no different. Thank you to the grading committee comprising of Lesley Bennett, Kerrie Haines and Joan Walker who used information supplied by the clubs to fit the teams into the five divisions and try to build the numbers of teams in DP1 and DP2, which was difficult given the late start and clubs not wanting their teams to be challenged by playing in a higher division. The 39 teams were allocated to the following divisions: DP1 6, DP2 6, DP3 7, DP4 9 and DP5 10. As there were not enough weeks in the season for complete rounds in DP1, DP2 and DP3 several of the games in the last round were played as half games, which is not ideal. Most divisions ended the season with two or three teams clearly performing better than the remainder of the teams. As BWHA is looking to build numbers, particularly in DP1 and DP2, any teams finishing in the top three of their division may be looking at being promoted to a higher division in 2019.
COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING – MASTERS
There was a strong interest in the Monday Masters competition in 2018, with 25 teams nominating. Thank you to the grading and fixture committee comprising of Miriam McMahon, Kellie Roberts and Caroline Schomberg. The committee again dispensed with grading games as clubs are comfortable with the divisions they have been allocated in previous seasons and rarely try to excel to be promoted to a higher division. Using information supplied by clubs the committee placed the 25 teams as follows: 6 teams in MM1, MM2 and MM4, with 7 teams in MM3. Due to problems with the quality of umpires particularly in MM1 in previous seasons BWHA trialled allocating umpires from a panel to this division. Player behaviour did improve slightly. Looking back at the competition over the season as shown by the ladders in each division, there were clearly two standout teams in each of MM2, MM3 and MM4. BWHA publishes a table in the operations manual each year which indicates which level is appropriate for players who play both masters and either turf or grass hockey. While exemptions can be requested, clubs need to consider carefully the number of exemptions required, which should then determine the divisions for which they nominate.
UMPIRES & TECHNICAL
In 2018, we continued to work on developing Umpires and Technical to keep or improve the standard of officiating on both BWHA Fixtures, as well as HQ and HA championships. Our Members should be proud of BWHA’s contribution via our Umpires and Technical Officials who contribute to delivering great outcomes at HQ, HA and International championships (World Masters Cup). This year we trialled allocating umpires on Monday Masters Div 1 fixtures from a pool of well credentialled umpire representatives (State and National) as well as Monday Masters players.
19
Although the trial raised the standard of umpiring on these fixtures, it took a lot of effort and was only successful due to the good nature of the State and National umpire reps who came out on a Monday night to help out. So unfortunately the trial will only be able to be continued in 2019, if there is much greater support from the players. BWHA should be very proud of the Umpires and Technical Officials that we are producing but it is only with the continued support of our Clubs and their development of officials within their clubs initially, that we will improve the standard of officiating across all of of our competitions.
TURF UMPIRES STEWARD’S REPORT
The 2018 season was quite disrupted, with many tournaments and events impacting on our fixtures and volunteer personal - the Commonwealth games, International Tournaments, Masters Trans-Tasman, World Masters, National U15, U18’s and 21’s just to name a few. While we still rely heavily on our Level 2 & 3 umpires to officiate on our Division 1 games, it is pleasing to see an enthusiastic group of young umpires working hard to establish themselves as Division 1 umpires, with many of them assisting with travelling to multiple venues each week to fill gaps. Amy Ryan (BWHA RDO) has also been working hard to get as many umpires as possible assessed on Turf matches, something that is not easy, co-ordinating the limited coaches with so many venues and times. Thank you to all mentors and coaches for assisting in developing the next group of umpires. In particular, we are very thankful for the continued support of Jan Hadfield AM and Lyn Hill for their tireless work in developing umpires for our sport. In this report I like to remind everyone, that while there is much whinging about umpires, we have some of the very best umpires in the country officiating on BWHA fixtures, umpires who travel internationally, nationally and regionally to umpire, umpire coach and manage, congratulations on your outstanding commitment to our sport. There is still a lot of work required by a number of clubs to increase the number of umpires they have to support their club teams, each club should have a development program in place to achieve this. Placing everyone’s name on the club umpires register whether they can umpire or not, is not the solution, teaching them to umpire is the only way to increase the quality and quantity of umpires we have; if you don’t want inexperienced umpires on your game, then don’t put inexperienced umpires on your register without ensuring you have a mentoring system in place to support them. To those clubs who have been working hard to increase the ability and number of umpires they have, thank you for your efforts, the more umpires you can develop the easier it is to encourage people to become umpires, sharing the load around ensures people appreciate that umpiring is not easy and all people who take up a whistle should be thanked not criticised. If your club needs some assistance contact Amy in the BWHA office and she will be able to give some practical assistance so your club can establish an umpiring program. Thank you to all that have umpired this year, for without you there is no game, I hope you all come back next year ready for the fun, enjoyment and challenge of umpiring.

GRASS UMPIRES STEWARD’S REPORT
This year, as in years past, many clubs had ‘regular’ umpires covering their weekly senior grass allocations. This regular use of umpires, some of whom umpired nearly every week, lead to consistency, increased skill and experience and resulted in a good level of umpiring for grass teams across Downey Park. The ‘regular’, experienced umpires were allocated across all five grass divisions to share the experience and to try to ensure newer or less experienced umpires who tend to prefer the lower divisions, had an experienced co-umpire for support. Several clubs have been working on developing the umpiring experience of some of their juniors by including them in their umpire register for senior grass. Downey Park is a valuable learning environment for these umpires that can be overlooked for development when the young players play in turf competitions. I would like to thank the BWHA senior grass clubs, players and club umpire co-ordinators for their support and flexibility to fulfil the Downey Park umpiring requirements each week. Recommendations:
• Encourage clubs to continue to inform BWHA of changes e.g. injuries or absences affecting umpire availability during the season so umpires can be allocated from the most up-to-date version and changes needed after the allocations are done can be minimised.
• Encourage clubs to look to using the senior grass competition at Downey Park as a supportive environment for junior umpire development.

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)
TURF & GRASS
A number of changes in how new and changed registrations are recorded were implemented this year as a result of feedback from clubs. It is hoped these changes lightened the load on club volunteers. Thanks again to team managers for their efforts in completing match records each week. Only part of our system is computerised so the records are still checked manually each week to ensure registrations are consistent with our rules. It is appreciated when managers complete the match sheets properly as this makes checking of records so much easier. MASTERS
The 2018 season saw 6 teams in the MM,1 MM2 and MM4 and 7 teams in MM3. This is an increase in teams by 3 compared to 2017. The continuing growth in our player numbers for Masters is encouraging and will hopefully continue into the coming seasons. It is interesting to note the players who play for different clubs in Masters compared to where they play their grade hockey. This is contributing to the numbers of players participating in our Masters competition continuing to grow which is great to see.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT
MEMBER DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (MDM)
2018 was another very exciting year for hockey in Brisbane, BWHA and in particular the
Development Department were super busy delivering as much hockey to people on different
platforms as possible. Some of the highlights for me were;
• An increase in the number of new coaches into the Representative and Development programs.
• A wide spread of players from across clubs gaining selection into Rep teams.
• We welcomed new volunteers into coaching, managing, umpiring, technical and selecting roles.
• Club representatives attended coach developer workshops, whilst players attended many development clinics.
• 50 coaches attended level 1 coaching accreditation courses conducted this year.
• 39 Umpires were accredited in 2018!
• The BWHA Representative teams were as always highly successful in 2018 with U11s, U13s & Masters winning gold medals, whilst placing 2nd was U15s, U18s and our Super League team the Brisbane Blitz and the U15s placed 3rd.
• School development, Gala Days, Sporting Schools, Hook in2 Hockey, Come and Try days – we did it all!
• Many clubs ran very successful “In house” development clinics and programs utilising their Senior elite players and coaches.
• We were successful in obtaining a grant from BCC to conduct Come and Try programs including Healthy Mind & Healthy Body Physical Activity programs and workshops, which were offered across many platforms and age groups.
• BWHA increased our involvement in the inclusive space running the inaugural WoW (Walking or Wheeling) Hockey program at Downey Park, this was very rewarding for me personally, with around 25 new friends participating and loving hockey across all age groups, I hope that we have a long relationship with these new and returning hockey players.
• Representative training camps across the U11s, U13, U15 & U18 programs which included workshops and training opportunities with some of QLD and Australia’s best and current players.
• The Toni Cronk specialised Goal Keeping Academy came to Brisbane for the 2nd year and was again highly successful, giving a great number of players (boys and girls) a wonderful opportunity to train with one of Australia’s best female Goal Keepers, we look forward to bringing this program to Brisbane again in 2019.
A huge thank you must go out to amazing young ladies who were the WoW Hockey volunteers from BGGS and All Hallows School, some of these ladies were in fact new to hockey themselves, they did an amazing job setting up the WoW program each week, welcoming players and families to the venue and introducing them to our sport, playing hockey and supporting people with different disabilities and impairments. They all had a very rewarding experience (even the volunteers)! These young ladies are the future of hockey and it is very exciting! The Runaway Bay Development Camps in Nov & Dec 2017 were a huge success and once again we have amazing plans for the 2018 off season camps for some of our lucky Brisbane based players (boys and girls) who are situated just outside of QLD TID recognition. These will consist of team
22
bonding, leadership workshops with elite QLD players and advanced coaches and some very strong rivalry between our squads. Plans for the 2019 camps are already underway, as we are constantly trying to offer new and exciting opportunities to our members. I am continually grateful for having this job, working with amazing people, being able to bring wonderful opportunities to very deserving people and seeing our members grow in confidence and ability. Thanks to everyone that has given back their time and energy to the sport to help in any way that they can, to ensure the growth of the sport and our community is thriving and successful, now it’s time to celebrate and reflect on these amazing outcomes, I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.

MDM
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)
2018 was yet another busy season for the development department at Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association. New programs were established, and other favourites were continued for all of our members to take advantage of. Junior members had access to a wide variety of clinics, workshops and representative opportunities. Starting with our U7 & U9’s, they had a pre-season Come and Try Carnival and Skills Day, the U11’s and U13’s had a revamped Development program which was well attended and plenty of school holiday clinics to attend. The U11’s introduced a representative day camp (to align with the U13 – U18 camps), and an information session for parents about our Representative Team Selection Processes. Our senior players took advantage of the popular Masterclasses as well as some skill development clinics throughout the year. All ages had access to a number of Goal Keeping clinics which are always booked out very quickly. Umpires were exposed to Introduction to Umpiring clinics, Turf & Grass Umpires Talks and the Umpire Mentor Workshop as well as many BWHA mentors out on the grounds. Many clubs took advantage of our services in regards to umpiring development and held Umpiring Development Clinics We visited approximately 52 schools and showcased hockey to 4323 students. There were 15 Sporting Schools programs and 7 Hookin2Hockey programs. We attended 13 Gala Days, and were involved in 3 Inclusive Programs. Our U11 Brisbane teams performed well at the U11 Southern Cross, finishing 1st in Division 1, 1st and 3rd in Division 2 and 1st in Division 3 – an improvement on last year’s results. We successfully accredited 42 junior and senior umpires, with many gaining representative honours at State, National and International level. Many of these programs, courses and successes would not be possible without the assistance of fellow staff and volunteers. To mention a few; BWHA Office Staff (Regie Fisher, Sue Barsby, Lisa Donaldson, Kath Proctor) Jess Ross (U7 & U9 Coordinator),
23
U11 Coaches (Amy Young, Paul MacPherson, Amy Lightbody, Courtney Kerr & Mel Blanchard), U11 Managers (Julie Richardson, Amanda Hannaford & Angela Lindop, Kristy & Ben Julien, Jenny Butler), U11 Selectors (Amy Young, Stuart Hudson, Paul MacPherson), Umpire Mentors (Alyson Aleksic, Lucy Moxon, Tara Leonard, Kerryl Chandler, Liz Lobb, Lyn Hill, Miranda McNamara, Sonya Fisher, Naomi Zerner, Jan Hadfield, Deb O’Connell, Jasmin Kay, Judy Hartnett), School Coaches (Dinah Dickson, Mick Gibbs, Achuthan Nair, Morgan Hill, Madeleine Smith, Michael Francis, Mary-Lee Clements, Emily Witheyman-Crump, Peter Hampton, Nicole Dennis), U11 Development Coaches (Amy Lightbody, Tamiesha Elmes, Madeleine Smith, Mel Blanchard, Dinah Dickson, Paul MacPherson, Lara Sheppard, Stuart Hudson), U13 Development Coaches (Madeleine Smith, Lynda Boyle, Lou Kendall, Tamiesha Elmes, Amy Young, Peter Hampton, Jane Gleeson), Junior Committee (Tash Gaddes, Alyson Aleksic, Marie Knight, Judy Hartnett, Rebecca Horne, Lynne Somerville) And many more helpers throughout the season. In the off-season we will be planning what’s ahead, revising and renewing programs, in order to continually improve upon the previous season. I look forward to a busy 2019! Amy Ryan Regional Development Officer FACILITIES REPORT
Noala Gordon and John Robinson continue to work on maintaining and developing our facilities at Downey & Rasey Park. John works one day a week and Noala a couple of casual days each week as needed. In recent years through grants we have been able to purchase a tractor with attachments and this year an aerator. This equipment allows us to perform maintenance tasks when needed and not have to plan and budget for outside contractors. We now have irrigation on all but 6 fields at Downey Park, irrigation allows us to do maintenance work with the assurance of water to follow up and establish the work. Fields 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 must rely on rain to promote growth and repair work. When the BCC do remediation work on this area we will look for grants to irrigate these fields. Having said this water is not free, and the cost impost of using irrigation must be borne by the members through their fees, it is a balancing act to promote good ground cover without wasting money. As the parks (Downey & Rasey) are large inner city parks, they are heavily utilised not only by sporting associations and schools but also the local community, fitness trainers and social groups, and it is a challenge to eliminate football boots on the park and animal waste from the fields, we continue to work with the BCC to achieve this. Noala & John speak with softball often working to align the needs of Downey Park with the shared usage. During the year vandals burnt the netting on 2 goal boxes which cost $400 to replace. During 2018 we were advised that we have been successful in receiving a State Government Female Facility grant to upgrade the old wooden buildings near F10 with modern universal design change rooms & toilets, this will be a great facility to support sport on the park, the project will be completed in 2019. We have also applied for funding to upgrade the BWHA clubhouse including the addition of a lift, we will not know until the end of the year if we are successful or not. The clubhouse is looking a little tired and if we are not successful with the grant, we will start a program to update the facility over the next few years – painted, new fixtures etc.
24
Following an Electrical Audit carried out by the BCC, we have actioned tasks on their list to modernise the facility – more power points (reducing the use of power boards), re-labelling circuits, updating emergency lighting and some light fittings. We are also looking into the cost of Wi-Fi in the clubhouse. During 2018 we had a number of major repairs – the pavers at the bottom of the clubhouse stairs where damaged by BCC tractors driving across them, this area has now been cemented; the toilets where blocked by years of tree roots, these where cleared just prior to the start of the season, with the clubhouse having no toilets for a week just prior to the start of the season; the battery pack in the electric golf buggy failed and had to be replaced, and the security system at Rasey Park have to be updated. All these things required immediate action outside the budget and adjustments had to be made to allow all this essential work to be completed. We replaced some hand basins and toilets at Rasey Park and will continue with this upgrading in coming years. Thank you to Noala and John for their dedication and love of the parks and to the office staff who are often the “labour” needed to move or check items across our two venues.
Kath Proctor.
TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT
TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT
Tours – we had good year with Southern Cross wins but only 3 teams won across all State Championships. We took out the following Championships: U13 Div 1 & 2 and Masters Div 1. With Southern Cross – we won U15 Div 1, 2 & 3, U13 Div 2 and U11 Div 1, 2 & 3. Congratulations to all Coaches, Managers & Players. Thank you to all Selectors who volunteered this year – it is a very time consuming job and often thankless but all players have equal opportunity to be seen. All Brisbane teams represented us well to the best of their abilities and this experience will only assist them in the future. Thank you to all Coaches, Managers and Umpires for your time that you put into each team and in achieving the best possible results. Congratulations to all of the players who made Qld teams, who made Shadow and who were identified. Next year’s Championships are in: U13 Cairns (4 teams) U15 Gladstone (4 teams) U18 Tweed (4 teams) Masters Mackay (6 teams) Super League Brisbane (1 team) Opens (Qld Hockey Festival) Gold Coast (1 team) Apparel sales were again strong with all age groups spending well on apparel. However, one of our suppliers advised that they were discontinuing our track pants and they would no longer be available by the end of this year. I had to place our 2019 order early but they gave us a good discount so hopefully the sales will reflect this next year. Thanks to About You Promotions and Hot Lollie for suppling extra urgent apparel when required. “Stock on Hand” at the end of this season is larger than normal due mainly to the additional track pants order.
25
Uniform & Equipment– we are still in the process of replacing our old playing uniforms – 30 playing top sets were replaced this year and another 25 will be replaced next year. I hope to have all teams in the same uniform by 2020. Thank you to all the Team Managers who assisted me with the uniform allocations and “safe” return of all items during this year. As this is my last report and I would like to thank BWHA Management for their patience and friendship over the many years. Also, to all the volunteers I have dealt with and worked with over the last 14 years. Now off for a wonderful “sea change” ☺

ARCHIVES REPORT
In 2018 there was a change in member for the Archive committee with the new Chair being Ronda Nix. The committee was made up of Jenny Tidey, Tracey O’Connor and Sue Reid. We met on a number of occasions throughout the year with one of the main focuses being preparation for the 85th anniversary. Framed Photographs of former Australian Players were added to the walls of the Downey Park Club house and this collection will continue to grow. Details of BWHA life members are also in the process of being updated and this information will be updated on the website in 2019. The committee is also undertaking the process of making digital copies of all the archives stored at Downey Park. This will reduce the risk of losing our history and hopefully eventually allow members to search for any details they may be looking for. Sue Reid ARCHIVES COMMITTEE REPORT
In 2018 there were two changes in membership of the Archives Committee. Long serving
members Elma Brennand (Convener) who passed away in late 2017 was replaced by Ronda Nix
and Shirley Otto retired and was replaced by Jenny Tidey. Tracey O’Connor also joined the new
Committee, while Sue Reid continued on as the BWHA Management Committee member on the
team.
The previous committee had provided a well-documented record of BWHA’s history, so the new
Committee set three main objectives for the 2018 year as follows:
1. Updating the online Profiles of Life Members 2. Creating a photographic record of all persons named on the BWHA Honour Boards 3. Commemorating the 85th Anniversary of BWHA with a display of large framed
photographs of BWHA’s Australian Players on the wall of the Clubhouse 4.
The online Life Member profiles were created in 2009 as part of the Q150 celebrations for the
sesquicentenary (150th anniversary) of the Separation of Queensland from New South Wales
in 1859. Therefore, there was another nine year’s data to add, since not only were there five new
Life Members since June 2009, many existing Life Members had continued to serve BWHA in that
26
time. The Committee were also of the opinion that some of the older Life Member profiles had
missing information, particularly of their service to BWHA through their involvement at
Queensland and Australian level. We found that Hockey Queensland (which came into being on
11 November 1995) did not keep the old Queensland Women’s Hockey Association (QWHA)
Annual Reports. Fortunately, however, we were able to source them in the archives of the State
Library of Queensland thanks to some prudent BWHA ladies who gathered them up prior to the
formation of Hockey Queensland. Even more fortunately, Karin Walduck is Director, ICT Services
at the State Library of Queensland, so was able to get them scanned in searchable PDF for us.
Many hours have been spent by members of the Archives Committee searching through these
documents to extract the relevant information this year.
It is our intention that the updated Life Member profiles will be on the BWHA Website in 2019.
Our goal of creating a photographic record of all persons named on the BWHA Honour Boards is
progressing slowly but surely. Where we cannot find and identify a suitable photo in the BWHA
archives, we are reliant on finding living relatives who are able to supply us with a photo. This is
quite time consuming.
We managed to get a reasonable display of large framed portrait photographs of Australian
Players in time to commemorate the 85th Anniversary of BWHA. We have contacted as many
living players and relatives of deceased players as we can find for photographs taken at the time
they were playing for Australia, preferably in uniform, and photos are continuing to trickle in. By
the beginning of the season next year we expect to have photographs along the whole of the
West wall of the clubhouse.
The committee is also undertaking the process of making digital copies of all BWHA archives. This
will reduce the risk of losing our history and hopefully, eventually, allow members to search for
any details they require whenever they wish. Whilst the Committee held a number of meetings at
Downey Park throughout the year, the bulk of the work has been done in our Committee
Member’s own time.
I would like to sincerely thank my Committee Members Jenny, Tracey and Sue for the
commitment they have shown to achieve the objectives we set for the year. Many, many hours
have been spent combing through records and photographs, scanning, collating and compiling
data, emailing, telephoning and visiting people, and photo-shopping, printing, framing and
hanging photographs.

CANTEEN & BAR REPORT BWHA runs two canteens (Downey Park and Rasey Park) that are open when fixtures are being played at the venue and a bar on Saturday afternoons upstairs in the clubhouse. Thank you to Abby Nichols (Canteen Convenor) for all her effort in ensuring the canteen is stocked with quality items for our members and guests. Her Saturday shift starts early and finishes after the last game, her work ethic is a credit to her, she manages the staff, the cooking, cleaning and stocktaking. The canteens are often the first casual job for our young staff and we thank them for being part of our grass hockey experience. For the past 10 years Sue Barsby has been the person behind the canteen organising rosters, purchases and preparing items for sale on Saturdays. Thank you Sue for all your efforts in this area, you will be missed next year. Lisa Donaldson will be the BWHA staff member taking on the behind the scenes work in 2019, so if you have any suggestions or ideas to make this service even better, please let Lisa know. The Bar is a service we provide on Saturday afternoon – a wide variety of beverages allow our members and guests to enjoy a drink, they chat about their game and their week, it is a social opportunity. We would encourage more people to utilise this facility to ensure it continues in the future. Jess Ross ran the bar most Saturday’s with support from Jeremy Truscott, Lisa Donaldson and Sue Barsby. Thank you to Jess and all that supported the bar. Kathleen Proctor General Manager Overall, I believe the canteen ran fairly smoothly again this year with minor issues, considering we
had a whole bunch of new staff to teach. It was challenging without a doubt and at times a little
bit stressful, but we got there… I found that having kept back another senior worker to help me
out the back was a phenomenal help and without it at times I would have been worse off. The
quantities again were very hard to judge and unpredictable each week, however, Sue did an
excellent job throughout the season. I would find it more beneficial having around 3 senior staff
on, one out the back with the supervisor (like Sophie was with myself), and another out the front
with the junior staff, as it is very hard to be monitoring staff throughout the whole day. Another
recommendation would be I do not find just the orientation of the canteen enough training for
new staff. I found this evident after this year, as all of the staff were new in comparison to other
years when we always had experienced people guiding them. A recommendation would be for
new staff to undergo at least 3 work experience shifts (unpaid) to learn more than just the basics
of scanning through items but communication was a huge issue this year, from not giving orders,
not ensuring someone has acknowledged the order and knows about it, trying to yell an order to
me from out the front over so much noise to sometimes not communicating at all. This was one
28
of the biggest issues and at times it felt like I just had to be a mind reader or be in 2 places at
once. However, aside from some of the issues that evolved it was a pretty great year with a lot of
different challenges and joyful events. Lastly, a massive Thank you to Sue Barsby for all the hard
work she has done for myself and the canteen over the years, it goes without saying that you will
truly be missed and not forgotten!

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT Another successful year for Brisbane Junior Girls hockey. 2018 again provided high quality competition structured by BWHA and the continued development opportunities for the players and umpires in Brisbane is outstanding. JUNIOR COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVES 2018 Natasha Gaddes (KW) Judy Hartnett (Valleys) Alyson Aleksic (KW) Lynne Sommerville (Redcliffe) Rebecca Horne (AHS) Maree Knight (SWU) COMPETITION STRUCTURE We saw great team numbers again in all divisions and continuing numbers in our U7/U9 comp at Rasey Park, great to see so many newcomers to our sport. With the Commonwealth Games on our doorstep this year, and hockey being a bit part of that, we saw many new participants after that as the season got underway. TURF: 2018 continued with the JT1-JT4 structure, again allowing maximum teams into the turf comp. Limited field capacity continues to be the issue for team numbers, however again BWHA have managed a very successful JT competition. The 13T competition again continued with the 2 divisions, 13T1 and 13T2 and whilst we struggled with weeks in the season to have a third round, the 14 game comp still allowed for this age group to be a very competitive competition. It was great to see so many 13T players represent over the 4 Brisbane teams in Bundaberg this year. GRASS: Downey Park saw competitive hockey each Saturday from the new U11’s right up to JG1. Whilst the JG3 division was disbanded this year due to lower numbers, all teams still played with strategy, ability and had fun. Rasey Park had all fields full of games each week, showing that clubs are still generating new interest and getting the little ones out and enjoying activity based play. Grand Final day was a another year of great hockey on the grass, a day of Joint Premierships, showing the depth and consistency of the standard of hockey played. JUNIOR UMPIRING This year continued the work with mentoring and developing young umpires, and we saw many of our young ones finish the season with accreditations in their umpiring. BWHA continues to see the future of our game is to provide a strong & supportive system of umpiring development. BWHA were again well represented at all State Championships with all umpires doing very well. U11 SOUTHERN CROSS TOURNAMENT The first age group for representing Brisbane in 2018 and was a successful competition hosted by BWHA, Junior Committee and BHA Juniors, a wonderful spectacle of hockey for the Southern Associations youngest representatives. This is a wonderful opportunity with a high level
52
competition environment. Thank you to the many helpers who supported the BWHA & the Junior Committee in delivering a hugely successful day of hockey for the U11 girls of SEQ. JUNIOR COMMITTEE This year our group increased to 6 volunteers, who met regularly and continued day to day business successfully through email and phone communication. Each Saturday morning on a rotational basis, Junior Committee provided a presence at Downey Park, to ensure the environment of positivity, for players, umpires and supporters alike, to enjoy watching Junior Sport. This was done with the Club Roster duty, a successful partnership of clubs and Junior Committee for the administrative side of DP games to be completed. Again thank you to the Junior Clubs of BWHA for their part in completing their Club Roster duties. The Junior Committee representatives share a common goal of commitment to the continued growth of Junior Girls Hockey in Brisbane. In consultation with BWHA Management Committee, the Junior Committee endeavor to provide quick, positive and appropriate decisions or guidance, to offer all players, teams and clubs, the best outcomes to concerns or requests. Thank you to the BWHA Management Committee for the opportunity to work as a Junior Committee group, to focus on Junior Girls Hockey. Natasha Gaddes Junior Chairperson

present values in determining recoverable amounts. The depreciable amount of all fixed
assets are depreciated over their useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held
ready for use.

Inventories of trading stock held for future use are valued at the lower of cost and net

Report on the financial report

report, of Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Inc., which comprises the Balance
Sheet as at 30 September 2018, Income Statement, Cash Flow Statement, a summary of
significant accounting policies, other explanatory notes and the Committee of
Management Statement.
The responsibility of the Committee of Management for the financial report
The Committee of Management of the entity are responsible for the preparation and
fair presentation of the financial report and have determined that the accounting
policies described in Note 1to the financial statements which form part of the financial
report are appropriate to meet the financial reporting requirements of the entity and
are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The Committee of Management's
responsibility also includes establishing and maintaining internal control relevant to the
preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material
misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditor's responsibility
My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. I
conducted the audit in accordance with Australian auditing standards. Those auditing
standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit
engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the
financial report is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts
and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's
judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the
financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the
auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair
presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are
appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the
effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the
appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting
estimates made by the Committee of Management, as well as evaluating the overall
presentation of the financial report.
The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of
fulfilling the Committee of Management's financial reporting responsibilities under the
Rules of the Association. I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this
report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person other than the
members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared. I believe that
the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my
audit opinion.
13
Emphasis of Matter
Without modifying my opinion, I draw attention to Note 1to the Financial Report
which describes the basis of accounting. As a result, the Financial Report may not be
suitable for another purpose.
Independence
In conducting the audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of the
Australian professional accounting bodies.
Electronic publication of the audited financial report
It is my understanding that the Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Inc. intends to
electronically present the audited financial report and auditor's report on its
internet site. Responsibility for the electronic presentation of the financial report on the
Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Inc. website is that of those charged with
governance of the Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Inc. The security and
controls over information on the website should be addressed by the Brisbane
Women's Hockey Association Inc. to maintain the integrity of the data presented. The
examination of the controls over the electronic presentation of audited financial report
on the Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Inc. website is beyond the scope ofthe
audit report.
Auditor's opinion
In my opinion, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects the financial
position of Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Inc. as of 30 September 2018 and of its
financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with
Australian Accounting Standards to the extent described in Note 1 to the financial
