NEXT MEETING MARCH 17, 7 PM
The Broward Democratic Party is proud to announce that Congressman James E. Clyburn will serve as the keynote speaker for the Broward Democratic Unity Dinner on March 21st 2015. President Barack Obama has said he is "One of a handful of people, who, when they speak, the entire Congress listens." Cyburn's path to activism begin at 12, when he was elected President of his NAACP youth chapter. Clyburn then went to organize civil rights marches, sit-ins and is the former Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. When Democrats regained the House majority in 2006, Congressman Clyburn was elevated by his colleagues to House Majority Whip and currently serves as the Assistant Democratic Leader. Broward Democratic Party Chairman Mitch Ceasar stated "Congressman Clyburn has consistently fought for human rights, be they student loans, infrastructure or those without a voice." For more information about the dinner please contact Executive Director Tamara Ayon 954-423-2200.

From the Chairman’s Desk
Our Chairman Mitch Ceasar has been chosen as a member of the Sun Sentinel Top 100 influential leaders in South Florida. You will be able to locate his weekly comments in the opinion section of the Sun Sentinel every Sunday.
(2/23/2015) A new study has been released indicating that the economy is improving, but not necessarily for Florida women. Women are earning just 83.2 percent of what men earn. This is worse than the previous year. We are going backward. The discrepancy is blamed on an uptick in male construction jobs. Sadly, men and women in Florida earn less than the national average. Corporate and small employers should remember that greater productivity occurs when employees are "equally" motivated. Equal pay for equal work for female employees is not radical, its just fair.

(2/10/2015) A new study has indicated a growing divide between poor and wealthy university students. The growth of these graduates among the poor was 3 percent over decades versus 33 percent among the wealthy. This is partly due to dollars necessary for school preparations and graduation. Paired with stagnant wage growth for the middle class, America has a problem. President Obama has proposed a Community College path (which I followed) and infrastructure spending to help all while providing better quality jobs. Please Congressional Republicans, do not reject good ideas simply because you do not like the author.
March is a very critical meeting. Our topic will be voting rights as they pertain to the restoration of Felon Rights. This issue will be a 2016 Florida Constitutional Amendment. This is not a partisan issue, but rather one of fairness. Florida is one of just a few states that require a multi -year waiting period, after a debt to society has been “paid.” I hope you will join with me in endorsing this issue.
(3/9/2015) The Broward County Commission is reviewing options to deal with a significantly depressed area in central county. It has remained as part of unincorporated Broward because no city was interested in its acquisition. Made up of mostly African-American residents, less than $5 million is allotted for economic development. That is a good first step, but the area needs vision. It will take time and a continued commitment. Tax credits for new business, and expansion of programs that allow homeowners pride in ownership are always meaningful. Good intentions are evident , but a long term commitment is necessary.
