Sporting Clay range. It will be a “shotgun start”: everyone will start at the same time,

each group will be assigned an initial station, and will then rotate to the next one.

Awards will be based on the Lewis Class System and lunch is included. Participation as a

shooter is $75 if you register on or before September 30th, and $100 if you register

October 1st thru the 6th. It is an open shoot so non-RBGC members are welcome.

Businesses and individuals are also encouraged to be event sponsors or underwrite

raffle items. The sponsorship opportunities include: food - $500; Targets - $300; water

station - $200 and fifteen individual sporting clay stations at $100 each. Sponsors will be recognized with signage at

the event and in the club bulletin which reaches 1,800+ people. All entry fees and sponsorships are tax deductible.

Please join the shoot, bring a friend and help make more scholarships possible. It will be a fun day for a good cause.

The River Bend Gun Club Scholarship Program

The Scholarship program is financed by member donations in conjunction with the annual dues, member grants in their

wills, by RBGC club donations and by fund raising events.

RBGC awards scholarships to the sons, daughters and legal wards of RBGC members in good standing who have been

members for two or more years. The award is $1,000 per year for four years, provided that the parent maintains their

membership and the scholarship recipient demonstrates each year that they are full time students with a Cumulative

Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher.

All students entering accredited undergraduate or graduate college/professional-technical schools may apply.

This award has been given to 28 students since the RBGC scholarship program was initiated in 2004. The total value of

the scholarship awards to date is $112,000.

The ideal candidate possesses the aptitudes, demeanor and motivation to successfully enter and complete a college or

an accredited professional school program. Thus far 100% of RBGC’s scholars have completed their programs and

graduated. The ideal scholarship candidate is also one who knows and can support the second amendment and who

will represent the shooting sports in a positive manner.

Two scholarship were award in 2018. The RBGC Scholarship is a four-year program so in addition to this year’s winners

there are currently ten additional scholars receiving annual awards for years two, three and four of their academic

careers.

Student applications for the 2019 Scholarship Awards may be submitted until December 31, 2018. The applications,

along with instructions and information on the selection criteria, is available on the club web site.

The RBGC Scholarship Committee members are Ken Smith, David Rabin, Chuck Watson, Barry Zuckerman, Larry Towner

and Gene Gray.

Action Pistol—July 21, 2018

Lightning, LOTS of rain, and then LOTS of sunshine. Saturday morning before the July Action Pistol Match, we had it all. But once again, Mother Nature smiled on the Action Pistol Bays and gave everyone a beautiful day. 41 competitors ignored the TV meteorologists and came to a great match. Besides our diehard regulars, we had 10 guests, 6 new-to-RBGC Action Pistol shooters and 10 ladies who showed up in force for shooting and camaraderie.

As is the Action Pistol tradition, the match was followed up with a lunch off the grill -- this month was

hotdogs plus Lori’s soon to be famous pasta salad, Mamiko’s already famous brownies – and, of

course, Action Pistol Door Prizes.

Our thanks again to all the Range Officers and volunteers who make RBGC Action Pistol a success.

Bullseye Pistol

Ladies and Gents,

Thanks to all 11 shooters who braved the hot temperatures to shoot our Bullseye Pistol Match

until we were finished and then the skies opened!

Congratulations to Match Winner Jim Good with 2500-54x. First Master was Art Rozier at

2486-62x. First Expert was Tony Johnson, who shot 2306-26x. First Sharpshooter was Neal

Lewis at 2333-31x (with borrowed guns). First Marksman was won by Chase Turner at 2365-

51x. Note that Chase turned in 860-32x with his Pardini .22, leading the field.

Our August match will be held Sunday, August 19 at 10:00a.m. Come out and shoot with us!

Light Rifle Match Report – State Championship

As in past years, the July Light Rifle match was an 80 shot match fired standing, offhand at 50 feet and serves

as the NRA Light Rifle Standing State Championship. This year was one of the coolest in memory, with low

temperatures and modest winds giving an almost chill to the air offset only by the humidity. There was no

rain and some sun, with the wind building in the middle stages of the match but diminishing considerably as

the temperatures warmed.

Twelve competitors were on hand,

possibly influenced by the cool muggy

weather and the scheduling of the match

on Sunday rather than the normal

Saturday. Match Director Bailey returned

from the left coast Saturday evening to

officiate the match and did not shoot the

match to focus on scoring. Don Coleman,

freed from scoring responsibilities, ran

the match at a blistering pace – and what

a tight match it was!

Both George Wilson and Junior competitor Ethan Wood

started the match out well by posting scores in the 90’s –

Wilson a 92-1X and Wood a 90-1X. Usual high scoring

competitors Mark Dorlay and King Stracke started toward

the back of the pack in the low 80’s bested by Brad

Reynolds 88-1X and returning shooter Steve Zeller with

an 88-0X.

The second stage saw Stracke return to usual form

posting a 93-0X to take over first place in the second

stage summary. The second stage saw Wilson, very

uncharacteristically, throw a shot wide top post an 84 to hold onto second, but giving everyone else hope.

Reynolds continued to shoot well to hold 3rd, but was outshot by his wife Beth, who posted an 89-0X.

By the midpoint of the match, Dorlay was posting better and consistent scores and had edged back to take

over 1st place by 4 points. Wilson (351-1X) held 2nd place by 1 center shot over Stracke (351-0X). Beth

Reynolds and Steve Zeller were tied for 4th place with each scoring 437-1X.

10

Light Rifle

After the next two stages a slight shakeup had occurred. In the 5th stage, Bob Morris shot a match high 96-1X

to improve his standing significantly. After stage 6, Dorlay (539-2X) was will in first place by 2 points with

Stracke (537-1X) edging out Wilson (534-2X). Brad Reynolds (529-6X – yes 6X) had taken over 4th place with a

resurgent Morris (526-1X) taking 5th edging out a still strong Beth Reynolds (522-1X).

Just after mid-day, all of the shooting was over and the final points tallied. Mark Dorlay took first place and

Open State Championship honors. George Wilson had edged out King Stracke by 2 X’s to take 2nd place with

Stracke finishing in 3rd.

Ethan Wood, suffered one bad stage still managed to post a very respectable 664-2X to take the Junior State

Championship honors for the 2nd year in a row. (Wood bested his previous years score by 162 points!)

Brad Reynolds finished as 1st Sharpshooter with a resurgent Bob Morris taking 1st Marksman.

Results:

Mark Dorlay 722.3X – Match Winner – Open State Champion

Ethen Wood 664-2X – Junior State Champion

Brad Reynolds 701-6X – 1st Sharpshooter

Bob Morris 707-01X – 1st Marksman

Please see the match bulletin for full results and congratulations to all winners.

The next match will be held on August 4th and will return to the 50 yard format with one match iron sights

only and one match an any sight match.

11

Rimfire Benchrest

The weather really cooperated for the July Rimfire Benchrest match, as the temperature and humidity were

moderate, the skies sunny and the wind very tame. A total of ten shooters were on hand, but lack of space to

hang targets limited the field to nine shooters with the MD sitting this one out. With the MD focused on scor-

ing and match operations, the match zipped by in record time, with all shots fired by 11:30AM.

The match this month was comprised of three stages at 50 yards. In previous matches, all competitors fired

at the same RBA target, which put the Sporter Class shooters at a major disadvantage for match winner hon-

ors as the RBA target is very small. To even the playing field, the Sporter class competitors fired on IBS 50

yard targets – a more appropriate size target for Sporter/Factory rifles. The nine competitors filled out 3 clas-

ses with 3 shooters each – Unlimited, Sporter – Rest and Sporter – Bi-pod, with the three Unlimited Class

shooting the RBA target and the six Sporters shooting the new IBS 50 bulls.

With very good wind conditions and the

larger targets, it was anticipated that

scores would be good. Sure enough, al-

most all of the scores were in the 240’s

with Grant Toman, using his Anschutz

“Oops” posting a 248-12X in the first

stage to take the lead over Pat Patterson

with his Hall/Shilen rig firing a 248-

11X. In the Sporter-Rest class, Joe

Ettershank, using his Anschutz 1727,

also posted a 248 but with only 8X’s.

Steve Gould, firing his Vudoo V22,

shot a 246-7X and complained that

the new targets were too big!

With winds staying modest, firing of

the next two stages continued. In stage 2, Gould posted the match high stage score of 249-4X. Unfortunately

for Toman, Oops developed “Colic” and refused to group consistently. Pat Patterson was having no such

problem, and advanced up the leader board. Ettershank continued to post consistent scores and Andy Green-

spon, improving with every stage, also started moving up the grid.

(Continued on page 12)

12

Rimfire Benchrest

The shooting was over early and while MD Bailey finished scoring, several volunteers set two additional pipes

at the 50 yard line to allow for an additional target frame. With the third frame in place, a single relay can

easily accommodate 12 shooters and can squeeze in up to 15.

With scoring and range mods complete, it was time to announce the winners – and for the first time, a

Sporter class shooter took the Match Winner honors, with the winner, Ettershank, taking top honors based

on X count over Gould, also in the Sporter class!

Joe Ettershank Sporter-Rest 743-23X Match Winner

Pat Patterson Unimited 735-34X 1st Unlimited

Andy Greenspon Sporter-Rest 734-15X 1st Sporter-Rest

Steve Gould Sporter-Bipod 743-15X 1st Sporter-Bipod

Congratulations to all of the winners. Please see

the attached Bulletin for the full match results.

The next match will be held on August 26th and

will, again, feature three 50 yard stages fired on

either the RBA or IBS target depending of rifle

class. If you have an accurate rifle and a good

rest, come on out and join us for the fun.

Smallbore Silhouette

Saturday July 21st started out very ominously but developed into a great day at the range.

The alarm clock went off at 5:45 as planned, with little indication of the weather drama about to unfold.

Glenn and Karen (Channel 2) had been warning of possible bad weather for Friday evening for a couple of

days, but that hadn’t developed. It did, of course, but about 12 hours late.

Within just a few minutes of dragging out of bed, the first rolling boom of thunder came. Within a minute or

so, the lightening started flashing with so many strikes it looked like a strobe light was flashing outside the

window. Then came the wind and rain – and holy cow did it come.

With the bed still calling my name and the rain hammering the roof, it was tempting to crawl back between

the sheets, but I knew that RO Don Coleman would need help putting the frames away when no one showed

up and responsibility got the better of me. We had 19 shooters in June and I figured we would get zero in

July!

After getting ready, and with the rain still pouring, I tuned the TV to the local weather and there was Pixie Girl

saying that 40 thousand people were without power and that trees were down all over – more reason to go

back to bed!

By the time I started the commute to River Bend, the deluge had diminished to a heavy but steady rain and

the winds had dropped. Hardscrabble was closed due to construction and Hwy 372 was blocked due to

downed trees, with Milton’s finest rerouting traffic with Firefighters taking care of the downed trees – and

probably power lines.

An hour and a half into an hour-long commute, I crested the hill on the Rimfire Range driveway just as the

rain ended, to see Don’s white pickup sitting, very lonely, in the parking lot. Ironically, the skies were rapidly

clearing and the humidity was dropping.

Over the next 30 minutes a total of four additional intrepid shooters showed up as the sky turned a beautiful

blue, the air became cool and dry and the storm gave way to a truly delightful day for shooting. There was

much discussion about the weather keeping shooters away, and no one could believe how nice the day was

shaping up.

All five shooters were all in either the B or A class, so scores were expected to be in the low teens. Both Al

Dunn and Alan Rauber were shooting with metallic sights with the rest of the field using scopes.

Smallbore Silhouette

The first match was the Standard/Silhouette Rifle match. Scores were as expected with the exception of

Simon Bailey who started with 4 Turkey’s and improved from there, shooting 4 animals in a row at Rams,

Chickens and Pigs to end up with a final score of 23.

Simon Bailey Match Winner 23

Al Rauber 1st A 13

Brad Reynolds 1st B 13

Match two was the Hunter Rifle match. Al Dunn finished well with 15 animals and the husband and wife pair

of Brad and Beth Reynolds (in her first Silhouette outing ever) tied at 8 to necessitate a shoot off. Simon

Bailey, shooting well in the first match struggled in the second match. Hitting only 10 animals out of the first

30, Bailey redeemed himself at the final set of animals shooting a total of 9 – taking all five of the first bank of

Chickens to earn a 5 in a row pin. He hit the first animal in the second bank (for 6 in a row) before missing,

and then cleared the remaining three, to post a final score of 19 to win the match and salvage come self-

respect.

The shoot-off between the Reynolds was a very fun affair. Originally, Brad had brought a Marlin 77 to use in

the match. Just before the first match started, MD Coleman convinced Brad to use his Anschutz 1712, a big

improvement over the Marlin. Shooting well during the first match, Brad was confident enough to throw

down a challenge to wife Beth: If she beat him, he would buy her a 1712 - Let the rivalry begin! Falling just

short in the first match, the tie and subsequent shoot-off left the door open for Beth to win the bet.

The Reynolds first shots left the tie in place – both missed. The next two shots also didn’t break the tie. On

the fourth animal Brad fired first - and missed. Beth fired – and Hit – and won - beating her husband and

winning her Anschutz! Rumor has it that Brad is actively in the market to make good on the bet – very smart

man!

Congratulations to the winners

Smallbore Rifle Prone

The July 28, 2018 Smallbore Prone match was a “metric” match in which we shot on the very difficult NRA Metric targets, which are based on the targets used in international competition. On the 50 meter target the 10-ring is 0.41 inch, and on the 100 yard target the 10-ring is 1.045 inches. We had nine competitors, six shooting with sling and three shooting F-Class (bipod or front rest). We were missing several of our regulars because they were shooting in the NRA Smallbore Prone Nationals.

We welcomed two junior shooters, Jacob Day and Anusha Pakkam. Both shot extremely well! Jacob placed second among all sling shooters and Anusha placed fourth, with Anusha shooting with iron sights throughout the match. They will be forces to be reckoned with, and it was good to have junior shooters participating with us.

Simon Bailey continued his winning ways in F-Class with an exceptional score of 1183-70 (out of a maximum possible score of 1200-120). In the Dewar match (20 shots at 50 meters and 20 shots at 100 yards) he dropped only two points, quite a feat in the windy conditions we had.

Don Greene, past State Champion, returned after a long absence and picked up right where he left off, winning sling class with 1164-43, shooting with iron sights, no less.

F-Class:

Simon Bailey 1183-70

Cor Vanderbeek 1158-42

Joe Ettershank 1138-36

Jacob Day 1157-43
