We will serve a potluck buffet style meal and celebrate our friendship with each other. Our membership approved a new statement of Bylaws on November 14 th . These should be uploaded shortly on our ETGS website. Looking Forward - your new 2016 Officers (listed to the left) will continue to work hard for you. Please welcome them onboard. Thank You to Tony Hanson who gave a very informative presentation in November about “Personal Digital Security & Privacy”. Condolences

Condolences to the family of Travis Dewayne Hood. Mr. Hood was born in Tyler, Texas on May 2, 1940 and was a skilled bricklayer. Memorial service was Friday, November 20, 2015 at Grove Hill Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas. Travis was the brother of ETGS member Jackie Hood.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

2015 TSGS Award Recipients Scott Fitzgerald received Fellow Award: Texas State Genealogical Society awards the Fellow Award to Scott Fitzgerald. TSGS recognizes individuals with the special distinction of Fellow making the recipient an Honorary Member of the society. To receive the Fellow Award the individual must have made significant contributions either to TSGS over a period of several years or made significant contributions of state-wide impact on the Texas genealogical community. More than one individual may be recognized in any year.

Andrew Leath won 3rd place in Category VII –Books Published by Partner Societies - Index To Obituaries From The Tyler Daily Courier-Times, 1916-1929. These entries include county or community histories, cemetery or census transcriptions, extracts and abstracts of newspapers or records of local and county agencies and courts, and similar genealogical references published by a partner society in 2014 or 2015. Books were rated for each of six criteria: quality of binding, design, organization of topics, readability/overall usefulness, indexing, and adherence to current genealogical standards including numbering system and citation of sources. $200 for first place; $100 for second place; and $50 for third place.

ETGS Publication

Smith County Historian, Andrew L. Leath has read the microfilmed copies of the Tyler Daily Courier-Times available at the Tyler Public Library to compile this index. This book complements the book Obituaries from Tyler Newspapers, Smith County, Texas, 1905-1915 that was compiled by Lorene West Conaway and Ruby Renfro Neilson. The book lists the name of the deceased in alphabetical order with their age, place of death and dates and page numbers of publication. It also lists the obituaries sorted by the place of death. An index is also included that covers the maiden names of the deceased women. The cost of this 272 page, soft-cover book is $30.00.
