Counting Our BlessingsOur Sesquicentennial
My childhood hobbies included playing baseball, riding horses, fishing, sailing and other watersports, camping and philately. Yes, I collected stamps,
and for a few years I was a passionate collector. Among my prize possessions was a mint set of stamps issued in honor of the 1926 International Exposition in Chicago, celebrating the Sesquicentennial of the United States of America. Obtaining that stamp and adding it to my collection also added the word
“sesquicentennial” to my vocabulary, which came in handy at the school spelling bee!
I wasn’t sure if I would have many opportunities to use the word again during my lifetime, but here we are celebrating the sesquicentennial of Congregation Shaare Emeth. Founded in 1867 by a group of progressive members of then-Orthodox synagogue B’nai El, the “Temple Association” purchased land, built a Temple, and two years later changed their name to Congregation Shaare Emeth – the Gates of Truth. Now, 150 years later, we are the legacy of that humble beginning – a thriving and successful testament to their vision. We are the largest synagogue in the State of Missouri, and our programs, services and commitments serve as a model for many other congregations throughout our region and across the nation. We should be proud of our Congregation – our beautiful building and campus, our mission and our membership.
The Hebrew word for congregation is “Kehillah.” A Kehillah is not a building – it is a community of people who come together in common purpose. Our purpose is clear, and it is one that should make us proud:
Congregation Shaare Emeth is a compassionate and inclusive community that makes Judaism relevant, meaningful and joyful.
Every day, we seek to honor the legacy of those who came before us as we work to fulfill this mission through the commitments we make to our key values: Living in Community, Lifelong Jewish Learning, Acting as Agents of Social Justice and Change, Living with an Awareness of the Sacred in our Lives, The Land and People of Israel, Acknowledging our Community and Managing our Resources. We have much work yet to do.
As we celebrate where we have been and where we are going in the next 150 years and beyond, I can’t help but remember the image on that commemorative stamp celebrating the US Sesquicentennial. It was a picture of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, and inscribed upon that bell were the words from the Torah: “Proclaim liberty throughout the land, and to all the inhabitants thereof.” (Leviticus 25:10).
These words ought to inspire us. Our mission today continues to include working together not only for our own community, but for all people, everywhere, so that all may enjoy the blessings of life abundant, justice and peace.

From the ClergyJustice at the Center Update
Shaare Emeth’s new Justice
at the Center initiative is a model of social justice work that aims to address
the root causes of injustice. It begins with relationship-building within our Shaare Emeth community. In this first phase of the initiative members sit face-to-face in house meetings listening to one another’s stories about the challenges we face, the injustices we see in our community, and our desire to work toward change. These stories are the building blocks of this initiative as they will help us determine which social justice issue we will tackle first. Our goal is to listen to the stories of 500 Shaare Emeth members over the next two months and we are well on our way to meeting that goal.
Our Justice at the Center House Meetings are progressing. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to host a meeting and thank you to all who have attended. If you would like to attend a house meeting but have not yet received an invitation or if you would like to learn more about Justice at the Center please visit www.sestl.org/JusticeCenter or contact Stacy Jespersen at [email protected].

Simchat ShabbatFRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 6 P.M.
Simchat Shabbat is a joy-filled, intergenerational, participatory service held on the first Friday evening of every month. Cantor Warner, Lucy Greenbaum and a small rock
band lead us in high energy, contemporary music, and birthday blessings are offered as well. While Simchat Shabbat is embraced by members of all ages, it includes a special component designed just for religious school age children. After our birthday blessings (about half-way through the service) children are invited to join a
member of our clergy for a separate Torah service that will include age-appropriate music, a story and a special Torah reading led by our teens. While children are participating in this program, the rest of the Congregation will remain in the sanctuary for a sermon and concluding prayers. Both experiences will conclude together with a closing song led by our children.
Because of our 150th Anniversary Shabbat, there will be no Simchat Shabbat service in November. Birthday blessings for November and December will both be held on December 1.

From the PresidentGratitude and the Power of Community
At an event sponsored by the Federation, I attended a session led by Michelle Hoberman. She wrote these beautiful words about gratitude that I felt were in
keeping with the message I delivered during the High Holidays, and I am very grateful that she is allowing me to share them with all of you.
The Wexner trip that Michelle refers to, and the Rubin Israel trip, are both made possible by generous contributions from our members Pam and Ron Rubin. We are all very grateful for their generosity and commitment to our Jewish community. As you read Michelle’s words, think about how you can focus on gratitude in your lives.
“Do you ever stop and think about how privileged we are to live in our community? So much purpose, so much opportunity, so much to become involved in. And every member of our community can play an important role in strengthening and improving it. However, it is completely up to the individual to determine how involved to become.
And what if people were paid for their service to the community - mitzvahs, deeds of loving-kindness? How rich would we be? We are richer than we perceive we are for the abilitytoexperiencethosemitzvot.Tobetherecipientofthosedeedsinthefutureatalevel greater than the payment into the community that we are making today.

My hope is that more of our community recognizes the goodness that we are a part of, and that more of us show through actions, words and mitzvot how grateful we are to be together in this space and at all these respective times.

ISRAEL BOUND 2018As parents
and grand-parents, it
is natural to worry about our children and grandchildren. Fortunately, there is an answer
for those who worry about the Jewish identity of the teens in their lives. Teen Israel experience changes lives. Research demonstrates that Israel travel provides one of the most significant impacts on Jewish identity development. Young people who travel to Israel are more likely to make a lasting commitment to Jewish life. If you have a child or grandchild currently in grades 10-12, I hope you will consider giving them the gift of Israel travel this summer.
I am excited that I will again be helping lead the federation-sponsored St. Louis Israel Bound program from June 10-29, 2018. There are also a number of great Israel travel options available through the Reform Movement, which you can learn about by visiting www.nftyisrael.org.
I know these opportunities are expensive, but please don’t allow cost to prevent you from considering an Israel experience for your child. Shaare Emeth and the Jewish Federation have resources available to enable teens to participate in these programs. Please contact me or one of my colleagues to discuss scholarship and grant opportunities.
I hope you will consider giving your child the gift of a teen Israel experience this summer through Israel Bound or another program. Please be in touch with me should you have any questions.

You Can Own a Piece of Shaare Emeth History!
Marian Steen created a beautiful piece of artwork to celebrate Shaare Emeth’s
150th anniversary, and it is currently on display in our South Lobby. For a limited time, we are offering matted prints of the work for $50 each. Contact the Temple office at 314-569-0010 to purchase yours today!
Marian Steen
Marian Steen graduated from Washington University’s School of Fine Arts and, after raising her family, turned to the outdoor art show scene. She has taught at Washington University Fine Arts Institute and has been a visiting artist at various organizations and schools. Steen has held demonstrations and lectures at Wash-ington University, the Ethical Society of Saint Louis, East Central College and the University of Missouri St. Louis.
She uses handmade paper, found objects, and scraps of memorabilia that are significant to the project such as buttons, pieces of clothing, sticks, and other textured material. All of these pieces add dimension and meaning to the flat surface of the painting.
“In my work, I acknowledge the existence of struggle or pain,” Steen says. “However, I want my paintings to be ultimately hopeful and beautiful. I want the people looking at my work to be drawn into it. I want them to take a moment from their day to enjoy the interplay between color, line and texture, and hope that they find this brief respite rewarding.”

Scrip OrdersDid you know you can donate money to Congregation Shaare Emeth without spending an extra penny?
Scrip is a program where companies provide gift cards to nonprofit organizations at a discounted rate. Nonprofits such as Shaare Emeth then sell the gift cards at face value. Shaare Emeth gets the
difference. You can stop by the Temple office to purchase gift cards for your favorite restaurants, retail and grocery stores or set up a regular monthly order for gift cards that you know you will use on a regular basis. Contact the office at 314-569-0010 for more information.
