THE BULLETIN TEMPLE SHOLOM OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT www.templesholom.com 203-869-7191 April - May - June 2014 Nisan/Iyar/Sivan/Tammuz 5774 “THE BROKEN AND THE WHOLE” Scholar in Residence Weekend - May 18 TH , 2014 with Rabbi Charles Sherman & Rabbi Erez Sherman It’s been five years since Rabbi Erez Sherman, our Rabbinic Intern, left Temple Sholom for the warmer climate of Los Angeles, California. Since then, he and wife Rabbi Nicole Guzik have been very busy, each of them excelling at two different LA synagogues and expanding their family to include daughter Annie and son Zachary. We are excited to welcome Erez back to Temple Sholom to share his family’s story with us. Erez will be joined by his father, Rabbi Charles Sherman who is on a book tour for his recently released memoir, “The Broken and the Whole”. This uplifting book chronicles the story of the Sherman’s oldest son Eyal, who suffered a stroke at age four, leaving him a quadriplegic and vent dependent. Today, Eyal is an accomplished artist who paints with a brush in his mouth. “Some years ago, I began talking publicly about our family story. I was somewhat surprised when people would come up to me afterward and say they related to my journey. And it wasn’t just people who had a sick or disabled child. It seems, that for all of us, at some point, something unexpected, unwanted comes into our lives,” said Rabbi Charles Sherman. Join us for Shabbat dinner on Friday, May 16th at 7:30pm when Erez and his father will speak about their incredible journey. “This is truly an unforgettable and amazing story–heart wrenching, inspiring, and ultimately reassuring. IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY RABBI MITCH CAN BE REACHED ON THE AFTER HOURS PHONE BY CALLING(203) 869-7191 EXT. 3

At the core of our Passover observance is our belief that our future can be better than the present and that humanity has the potential to change for the better: “Now we are slaves. Next year we will be free.” We cannot be free unless we believe in the possibility of change for the better. The wicked child of the Haggadah is the cynical voice that argues that Passover is an illusion; that nothing really changes. And because nothing changes for the better, why then observe this holiday? But, the response to cynicism is we can be the difference makers, and we can in fact make this night different than all other nights. Jews observed Passover within the bowels of Nazi Concentration Camps. Their eyes stinging from tears and the

smoke of the crematorium. They nevertheless held onto their unshakable faith in redemption. In Bergen-Belsen the Jews baked Matzah and Rabbi Israel Spira led a Seder. Amidst the degradation he shared hope when he declared: “Tonight we have only matzah. We have no moments of relief; not a moment of respite for our humiliated spirits.... But do not despair, my young friends.... For this is also the beginning of our redemption. We once were slaves who served Pharaoh in Egypt….But we were freed. We, who are witnessing the darkest night in history; the lowest moment of civilization; will also witness the great light of redemption...” Rabbi Spira’s words and faith let our people celebrate Passover within hell itself. This is the paradox of our Jewish faith. Our historical experiences have nurtured our faith in redemption, for we have needed to choose, and choose again, eternal hope vs. the temporal darkness that might afflict us. The Haggadah reminds us that in “every generation they rise up to destroy us, but God saves us from their hands.” God saves us because we choose hope and we pursue the possibilities, each and every moment, to bring about a better world to live in. Zissen Pesach, Rabbi Mitch

We all have our Passover traditions. As a child, I was fortunate

to spend many Passover seders with my grandparents, aunts,

cousins and numerous other relatives in Israel. It was always

festive, the food was delicious and there was something very

special about being in the Holy Land during Passover. After

my grandparents passed away, I went less often—and not

during Passover—but as the holiday approaches each year my

thoughts always go back to those wonderful seders in Israel.

A few week ago, I travelled to Israel on an emergency trip to

see my aunt who was very ill. It had been more than six years

since my last visit and I was disappointed in myself that it

took a family emergency to get me to go. When I arrived in

Tel Aviv, I saw a city I hardly recognized.

Construction cranes tower over the landscape as newer and

grander high rise buildings are added to an already impressive

skyline. What was once a desert is now a miracle of a modern

city that could easily be mistaken for Dallas or Phoenix.

We saw the impressive new opera house. The Tayelet is

bursting with life as Israelis are jogging, walking, playing

Kadima, socializing or just enjoying the beach.

My aunt was cared for in a new, state of the art hospital in

Petach Tikvah. If not for all the spoken Hebrew, and some

Arabic, you would think you were at Greenwich Hospital.

Young, bright and enthusiastic doctors treated her. An equally

dedicated, intelligent and understanding nurse named

Mahmoud cared for her and regularly updated us about her

condition after we returned each day. Arabs and Jews, being

cared for and by one another. There was even a kosher

McDonalds in a food court at the hospital, much to my

brother’s delight. Yes, miracles happen here.

Each year we end our Passover seder enthusiastically stating

“next year in Jerusalem”. I encourage all of you to one day

make good on the promise and visit the miracle that is Israel.

Have a happy Pesach, Dan Green

IN THIS ISSUE...It has been almost a year since I joined the Temple Sholom community. In that year, I have smiled at the excitement of the nursery school children as they walk through the lobby, watched the interaction of our religious school students, enjoyed the beauty of the music in the chapel and sanctuary, and joined with families as they prepared for simchas or dealt with a loss. Temple Sholom has been the embracing and diverse Jewish community that I was looking for.I sincerely look forward to meeting many more people during the coming year. I invite you to:

• Attend an event at Temple Sholom. • Try something you never tried to before.• Invite a friend when you come to a speaker

or Shabbat service.• Play golf or tennis at our outing in June. • Participate in a social action project. • Stop by my office to introduce yourself and we can

talk about an activity that will engage YOU in this multifaceted community.

Wishing you a Zissen Pesach. Eileen Robin

Brother of Drew and Ella

My name is William Shabecoff. I am a 7th grader at Greens

Farms Academy. I love to play both the violin and the piano,

and I also enjoy sailing and golf. For my Mitzvah Project, I am

raising money to plant seeds in a tiny village in Zambia. To me,

becoming a Bar Mitzvah means becoming a true member of

all of my communities.

My name is Hunter Korn. I am a 7th grader at Greenwich

Academy. I enjoy many sports and activities including crew,

basketball, chess, and robotics. In the summer, I go to a sleepaway

camp in Maine called Fernwood. For my Bat Mitzvah project, I

worked and volunteered with special needs kids at a program

called Friendship Circle. I am also a teen advisor for a charity that

is building a school for chess in Uganda. I have set up a fund for

my Bat Mitzvah so I can donate money to both of these causes

that are important to me.

Sam Goldman is in 7th grade at the Stanwich School. He enjoys

swimming, skiing, golfing and playing the trumpet. Sam spends

summers at Camp Indian Acres in Fryeburg, Maine. Committed

to a life of doing Mitzvot, Sam volunteers at various activities

including Temple Sholom Religious School as a Madrich, working

for Person-to-Person at St. Lukes and Cooking for the Homeless.

Sam plans to continue in the practice of performing Mitzvoth and

giving Tzedakah as a Jewish adult. To Sam, becoming a

Bar Mitzvah means being part of a tradition rich in history and

sharing this experience with family and friends.

My name is Joshua Leferman. I am a seventh grader at

Bi—Cultural Day School. I have earned my black belt in karate,

love to draw and solve word puzzles, play basketball for the

Stamford Peace League and enjoy playing videogames in my

free time. For my Bar Mitzvah project, I am collecting baseball

caps and fun socks to donate to the Bennett Cancer Center for

patients who are undergoing treatment. I chose my project to

honor the memory of my Grandma Nancy. Becoming a Bar

Mitzvah means that I will mature beyond my past and look

towards my future.

AJ is a 7th grader at Rye Country Day School. He loves playing

and watching all sports, but hockey is his greatest passion. He

plays goalie for both his school team and the Rye Rangers. AJ

enjoys summers at Camp Laurel South. For his Mitzvah Project,

AJ volunteers at Neighbor to Neighbor both sorting the

clothing and stacking the food pantry shelves. To AJ, becoming

a Bar Mitzvah means accepting a role as a part of the Jewish

community and taking responsibility for carrying on

Jewish traditions.

My name is Isaac Grodin. I am a 7th grader at Blind Brook Middle

School. I love basketball, soccer, skiing and playing the piano.

I enjoy hanging with my friends and my summers at Camp

Wayne. For my Mitzvah Project, I have been visiting and passing

out small gifts to the young patients at Maria Fareri Children’s

Hospital…something I’ve been doing since I’m 5. For me,

becoming a Bar Mitzvah is about tradition, commitment

and maturity.

I love playing sports, especially basketball, baseball and flag

football. I spend my summers at Camp Caribou in Maine. I worked

responsibility in my Jewish community. I will continue to give

back to those in need.

My name is Rachel Sachs. I am a 7th grader at Blind Brook

Middle School. I like to play sports, dance and hang out with my

friends. During the summer I go to Timber Lake Camp. For my

Mitzvah project I volunteered at Neighbor to Neighbor which

means having responsibility and becoming a woman in the

Jewish community.

My name is Yvette Wolpo, a 7th grader at Turn of River Middle

School in Stamford. I enjoy drawing and many sports including

skiing, archery, karate, biking, swimming and rock climbing.

I know that many children have less access to good meals

over the summer months when school is out. That is why I am

collecting food for the local food pantry as my Mitzvah project.

Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means an even stronger connection and

commitment to the Jewish people and to everything our religion

teaches us.

Barrington, MA. This year in service to the community I have been

participating in the Madrich program at the religious school

helping the teachers and office staff every Sunday. Becoming a

Bar Mitzvah means I get to carry on the traditions of Judiasm like

my family before me.

enough to have just returned from a trip to Israel with my family

and grandparents. I learned a lot about the history of the

country. My interests are running track, photography and

listening to music. For my Mitzvah project, I am collecting books

to donate to an organization called Neighbor to Neighbor.

Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means that I will have more

responsibilities in the Jewish community, and that I will have

to be a better role model.

to have a wonderful family who always supports me, and a great

group of friends. I attend Camp Laurel in Maine during the

summer, where I enjoy water skiing, dance, sports, and art

classes. I recently traveled throughout Israel with my family who

are from both Israel and the US. It was an incredible experience,

which I will never forget. I have enjoyed preparing for my Bat

Mitzvah, and learning about the meaning behind the prayers I

have learned. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah has taught me that I have

a responsibility in my community, and the importance of

helping others. In May, I will be running in the 2014 Greenwich

Walk/Run for Hope. It is a fundraiser to benefit CANCERcare,

which provides counseling, support groups, resources, and

financial assistance for those affected by cancer. I hope that my

run will help bring awareness to others, and will benefit those

who are in need of medical services and support. My name is Ben Sachs. I am a 7th grader at Blind Brook Middle

School. I enjoy playing basketball and soccer. I love spending my

summers at Indian Head Camp. For my Mitzvah Project, I helped

special needs children do athletic activities at “Backyard Sports”.

Becoming a Bar Mitzvah means becoming a Jewish adult and

living up to higher expectations.

On May 28, Rabbi Mitch will be honored by the American Jewish

Committee for his continued support and partnership with the

organization. The event will take place at 6:30 pm at the Ritz Carlton,

Westchester in White Plains. Frank Linde, AJC National and Regional

Board Member is also being honored.

Throughout the years, Rabbi Mitch and Temple Sholom have

partnered with AJC on numerous events. Most recently, Shahar

Azani, the Consul for Media Affairs, Consulate General of Israel in

New York came to speak at Temple Sholom. AJC brought Azani

in to speak on the subject of Israel and the media. Many Temple

Sholom members as well as people from the local community

came out to hear about Azani’s view on the perception, reality and

response of the media, when it comes to Israel. In 2011, David Harris,

AJC’s National Director filled the sanctuary and spoke to a standing

room only crowd.

“When David Harris spoke at Temple Sholom,” said Rabbi Mitch,

“it was a highlight for our community. His insider’s perspective on

the turmoil and transformation in the Middle East was both insightful

and thought provoking. I look forward to continuing our friendship

and partnership with AJC.”

AJC is a Global Jewish Advocacy organization with a mission of

enhancing the well-being of the Jewish people and Israel and to

advance human rights and democratic values in the United States

and around the world.

WHAT IS A YAHRZEIT?

YAHRZEITS April 2014

Meaning “Time of Year” in Yiddish, this anniversary commemorates the death of a loved one. It is symbolized by the recitation of the Kaddish prayer and reading of the names of those dearly departed in the Temple. At home, a candle is lit on the eve of Yahrzeit to represent the soul and burns for 24 hours. Tzedakah, a Hebrew word for righteousness and signifying charity, is offered to the family in the form of gifts, donations, or simply emotional support. In this way, we remember our beloved.Yahrzeit Candles are available for a small donation in the main Temple office.
