Wow—another jam packed month! We had the
Burra Fair and the weekend trip to Temora! But
you’ll have to wait until next month to hear all the
gossip on Temora!
Thanks to all contributors this month-it is great to
hear about other motoring events that members are involved in,
keep them coming!
From the Pen of Pam …...
Congratulations to the Events Committee for
another successful run - this one being Temora
last weekend. We even had our own in-house
entertainment. With Krystina McLeish playing her piano accor-
dian for a sing-along and Rhonda Winnett presenting a wonder-
ful rendition of ‘Brindacella’.
The club outings just keep getting better. I daren’t miss one. I
for one feel very lucky to be a member of such a friendly, social
club, it is like an extended family. The Burra Fair was also an-
other success with fourteen vehicles attending the day.
Our next outing is to the Braidwood Heritage weekend this Sat-
urday. Look forward to seeing you all there.
Everyone keep well and don’t forget to submit any articles of
interest to Belinda for the ‘Wheel’.

Wheels – 10 cars on display
Ladies Day trip to Goulburn – Belinda reported that all the ladies
who attended spent an enjoyable day together arriving in their mod-
ern, dependable cars. Highlights were the rose display that included
Goulburn’s own rose, a quilting and embroidery exhibition and a lo-cal art display. However, the reason for going, A Hundreds years of
pioneers in petticoats, was a walk down memory lane for a few ladies
as the practical underwear of Australian women was displayed and explained alongside some exquisite and very provocative pieces from
days gone by. Call for more ideas for Ladies Only outings.

Burra Fair – good roll up, although the group was divided into two as
members gravitated to the closest stand of trees that provided shade
near the vehicles. 18/4/04 - South Care helicopter Base, Monaro Hwy, 10am – tour
available, followed by BBQ lunch at Molonglo Gorge in conjunction
with CACMC. This will be considered as an ad hoc event.
25/4/04 Temora Aviation Museum – flying weekend – also Rural dis-play. Ron advised the Run would start from the Clubhouse on Sat
morning, travelling to Temora via Yass (morning tea and lunch stop),
Crisps Gallery, Binalong and Bookham. Sunday will be spent at the Aviation Museum, and Monday morning is a tour of the Rural dis-

Ron advised that this date is a week earlier than previously suggested
due to the lack of venues available in the area. The band “Bunyip and Bluegum” is booked. New caterers are taking over at the Club, and
cost and menu will be advised ASAP. Help will be needed to organ-
ise the different aspects of the evening and this will be taken up at the May meeting.

next newsletter. Each card is to joint membership; so if members wish to have individual cards, please notify Pam Corbett by the
May meeting. Please note that the cards expire 31 January 2005.
Belinda reported she is taking orders for broad brimmed hats.
Members are reminded to please pay for polo shirts that have
been ordered. The order will be placed once all payments have
been received.
General Business:
Fundraiser: Ron reported that the fundraising activity for the station-
ery engine club was a success, and that $742.90 net profit was raised for the Club, and also there is sufficient meat left over for the Temora
run. Other non-perishable items bought for the day have been includ-
ed in the Club’s collection. The Meeting was appreciative of Ron’s
efforts.
Badges: - set up cost for STHARC vehicle badges have been agreed
to and Ron advised the original quotes would be honoured. The meet-ing agreed to initially order stick on STHARC badges at $8.00 per
badge ($5 each cost price, so making a modest profit for the Club).
The more expensive metal badges will be further investigated before
ordering any. David Marsh moved to thank Anne Scattergood for organising the quotes for badges. The meeting showed its apprecia-
tion.
Name bars for new members: A motion was put to the meeting that
STHARC should supply new members with one lapel badge, limited

Burra Fair
Perfect weather (if you aren’t looking for rain) meant a good start for the ten vehicles and one bike that made the trip to the Burra for the Annual
Burra Community Association Fair.
As always, it was a pleasant day out with plenty to see and do, and some tasty goodies to try. Our vehicles all took part in the Grand Parade be-fore lining up near the old School house, a quieter spot than last years’
site beside the chainsaw demonstration area.
‘Noddy’ the Albion refused to start just ahead of the Grand Parade - thanks to a faulty battery! Thanks to John Cornwell and a bystander who were commandeered to push Noddy, she was pushed a few feet and started easily. I hate to say it, but I completely forgot she had a crank
handle mounted in the front - sorry John!!
The group split into two camps- in an attempt to get some shade! We then whiled away the afternoon chatting, members kept amused by the
gumboot throwing competition!

We somehow managed to fit 6 tractors and implements on the big semi-trailer on Friday 9 April, destination Cootamundra and ‘Plough
and by Counted’.
Our tractors were a 1939 Farmall M IHC, a 1945 Farmall H IHC, a
1951 Grey Ferguson TEA20, a Yammar 5110 and a Kubuta 5100.
The Friday afternoon at Cootamundra was a hive of activity and there were many unloading ramps aplenty. By nightfall we had our tractors and implements unloaded and parked beside our caravan in the exhibitors camping area. Upon registration, we prompted member ship of STHARC and were informed that we had the larg-est number of tractors in one name. Our three sons, ourselves and
Sonny the truck driver were our six drivers.
Saturday there were many activities such as the tractor pull - an old steam engine out pulling all the other tractors! Also, old and unique tractors were paraded for the spectators – described in great detail,
one such example being the units from South Africa.
It was interesting to meet the other exhibitors from all over Australia and other parts of the world; and to walk around the large area of trucks, tents and caravan – the atmosphere was incredible. Many sheep and cattle were barbequed each night by the various family
gatherings each evening.
Sunday morning we drove our tractors to the field to be ploughed. The tractors were placed in many rows, three abreast and had to plough 250 metres and then turn back and plough 5000 metres – this was finished by a lap of honour around the field and past the
spectators.
At the drivers meeting at midday on Sunday we were advised that we were 200 tractors short to break to Irish record of 1,834 tractors. This was due to around 600 registrations not checking in. The rec-ord attempt was deferred from 2 pm to 4 pm in the hope of getting
more tractors.
It was amazing to see the resilience of the farming community around Cootamundra as the message went out by two-way radio. Farmers actually disconnected their seed drills in paddocks and

drove to the site. Fences were cut and at least 20 big trucks of-fered their services and drove to farms up to 20 kilometres away to bring back tractors. By 3.30 pm there were sufficient tractors to
break the record, but the tractors still kept coming.
To be a part of the experience of 1900 drivers’ converging on their tractors and starting them was exhilarating. The noise, the smoke and the dust added to the atmosphere of excitement and anticipa-
tion.
Krystina’s tractor stalled on the start up and there were strict in-structions that drivers were not to leave their tractors. Fortunately, an official started her up again and she has the experience of trav-elling round the field three times – she was even seen on the Na-tional TV News by her sister in Melbourne who was not aware that
Krystina was in the event!
All drivers received a metal badge to show that they participated and officially the world record now stands at 1,901 tractors – and we got to be there! The organisers submitted details of all the trac-tors to the four judges from the Guinness Book of World Records
and fund raising during the weekend was donated to charity.

GRAND PRIX WEEK
Years ago, we promised ourselves that “one of these years”
we’d get along to the Australian Grand Prix. We’d watched it on TV for ages. Many years ago too, I’d been to watch Sir Jack’s “Repco Brabham” in action, but that was now a “historic car”! So times had
changed, and it was time we went along.
By the time we had finalised our bookings, it seemed that getting accommodation in Melbourne for the race would be doubt-ful. But some distant memory kicked in – many accommodation houses prefer to keep some rooms for longer bookings. It worked, and we found ourselves with a one bedroom serviced flat in St Kil-
da for a week, within walking distance of the race circuit.
We began our week with some time on Pauline’s agenda, which began with shops and followed with sightseeing. I went along with it, because I knew I’d later need all the brownie points I
could find.
Next came a day at the Melbourne Motor Show. It’s held in a giant airconditioned Exhibition Centre, known to the locals as Jef-f’s Shed (after the former Premier who commissioned it). “Giant” in
this case means about 100M by 200M, which is pretty impressive.
Along one side is a carpeted concourse, and there were dis-played the vehicles in the forthcoming Shannons auction. The model range was from a Messerschmitt to a Rolls (no trucks Ron), and the quality from “average club car” to concours standard.
Probably 60 or 70 vehicles, at a guess.
Virtually all manufacturers represented in the Aussie new vehicle market had displays. As a general observation, almost no-body showed “poverty pack” versions of even the low-end models: and vehicles ranged from the real basics in a Euro-style miniature called the “Smart” (which makes the 4CV big in comparison), to some very exotic Ferraris, Maseratis, Audis etc with tags nudging $500K. And everybody seemed to be selling the type of 4WDs re-
quired for tennis mums.
Then came the first day of the Grand Prix. What you see on TV is only a tiny fraction of the events presented, and it all runs from the Thursday. We’d booked seats in one of the stands, so our

viewing spot was guaranteed. No F1s on the Thursday, but there were races from other groups and I enjoyed the ‘historic vehicles display’, where cars from 1920s and 30s specials to Stirling Moss in
a 1954 Maserati 250F circulated around the track. There were con-
stantly other displays of various kinds, including by the RAAF.
On the Friday and Saturday there were more races, with the FI cars doing their first practice sessions for the year. From the out-set it was obvious that Ferrari would be the cars to beat; they looked as if they were on rails and had the legs to go with it. Wil-liams and, even more so Mclaren, were not in the same league of power or handling, with BAR the surprise package. The BAR Hon-das seemed to have ample power, but looked a little like ‘an acci-dent looking for somewhere to happen’ in terms of handling. Re-
nault seemed credible, with Jaguar next and then the rest.
The difference between being there and watching TV is the “atmosphere”. Nothing prepares you for the noise levels. We used earplugs which were barely adequate for noise levels that are actu-ally painful for unprotected ears – next time we’d take proper hear-ing protectors. The other “missing” from TV are the smells. The historic racers had the most marvellous smell of methanol and Castrol R. Once experienced, never forgotten. The V8 Holden and Ford racers had a “sour” smell, possibly from tyre rubber, though there was no smell evident with the Porsche Carreras which were as fast. But the FI cars have a uniquely “sweet” smell. If my recog-nition skills are right, it represented a group of hydrocarbons called “ketones” and I guess was from the rather exotic fuels they use,
where flame speed is more important than octane.
Our seats were only some 20 metres back from the track, where the cars were passing at high speed. But between us and them was a substantial weldmesh fence and concrete barrier. Out behind us were various displays, memorabilia shops, and food and drink stands. Everything was remarkably well organised, though some prices could be described as imaginative. There also was a
display of heritage vehicles by some of the Melbourne car clubs.
By the Sunday we more or less knew all our neighbours in the stand, and we were glad we’d booked seats. The crowds had grown daily from 80,000 on the Thursday to 120,000 on the Sun-

day, so good trackside “standing room” spots were at a premium.
Pauline and I had a problem: we’ve always gone for Schu in the Ferrari, but now that Renault have returned to F1, marque loyal-ty suggests we should back them. Finally the “local factor” took over and we decided to barrack for the Queanbeyan kid, Mark Webber, even though he drove a Ford going under a Jaguar badge. And Webber looked good in practice and had quite a good spot on
the grid.
Came the big race, and what had seemed to be Ferrari dominance proved to be the case. The two Ferraris romped away from the rest. Webber’s start was awful, so when he came by our stand the Ferraris had disappeared in the distance. Alonso’s Re-nault did quite well and the BARs, as expected, looked reasonably competitive. The Williams showed some promise, but the perfor-
mance of the McLarens was dismal.
So, was it all worth it? Yes, we had a marvellously relaxing week, which was just what we both needed. Both the motorshow and the car races were thoroughly enjoyable experiences. We pro-pose to do it all again one day: meanwhile we’d have to say though, that you’ll see more of the race by sitting in front of a TV. And the
beer’s cheaper then, too.

It seems that we have a celebrity in out midst. Ron and Anne Scat-tergood were recently approached to have one of their trucks ap-pears in a television commercial! The vehicle was advertised for sale in Just Cars and they were contact to see if they would hire it out. The 1942 Lendlease truck was subsequently transported to Campbelltown where the back wheels were remove and a door un-hinged for a rustic look. The ad is for Uncle Toby’s muesli bars and features Grant Hackett being chased across a paddock by a bull, he then leaps on to the back of the truck (hence the reasons for re-moving the back wheels - to make it low enough to jump onto), he then eats a muesli bar that gives him the strength to escape! So keep an eye out for it.
Krystina McLeish showed husband Ian a thing or two at Plough and be Counted. In the absence of Ian, Krystina thought she would try her hand to crank starting the tractor… she turned the handle and it started first go! Husband Ian arrived and quizzed her about using the choke -”Choke? Where is that?” Ian concluded that it actually didn’t need the choke, and his continued use of the choke was probably the reason that he always had trouble starting it!
The Thursday April 15 Issue of The Land had a great write up and aerial photo of the Plough and Be Counted World Record! Tractors were shipped in from South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand to par-ticipate.

Good Morning Vietnam Maureen Scattergood recently visited Vietnam for a work related trip and I hear that she is on the road again, here is her last update…... You will be pleased to know that I am working hard here - seriously. I am still waking at Aus-tralian time which is 3am local time. As I can't get back to sleep, I have been doing homework prior to going to the project's office in the morning. I just have to re-member that when I leave the room, taking out the key switches the power in the room off. Computers left on ..... Oh well !!!! Food has been .... Interesting, and varied. We have found a wine that has a dead crow, lizard and bear claw fermenting in it. It costs about $5 for a glass. So far, no-one has volunteered to try it. There have been a few suggestions as to what it could do to your system, not all comments have been printable!!! The traffic is amazing. Everyone rides motor bikes. No crash hel-mets, with thong type shoes, and no-one looks where they are go-ing too much. Makes crossing the road rather interesting, as the pedestrian crossings do not mean that the vehicles even slow down. There is a trick to crossing at a slight angle with the traffic flow. If you slow down or speed up your pace while you are on the road ....... Road kill!!!! Crossing the roads are a bit like bungee jumping. Big adrenaline rush by the time you make it to the other side of the road!!! Anyway, I am leaving Vietnam tomorrow. There is definitely not a lot of glamour in long distance air flights!!! 19 hours travel to get here, slightly less flying time on the way back as I am only going to Sydney, not Melbourne as on the flight over here. The traffic at night when I arrived in Hanoi did have the affect of waking me up though!! Catch you all later,

Details of Upcoming events!
The Braidwood Heritage Day The aim is to group at the clubhouse at 9.30 am have a quick cup-pa and leave Queanbeyan at 10am. We will aim to arrive in Braid-wood at 11 am, where we will regroup in the park near the War Me-morial. We will then travel down the main street and turn right at the Raine and Horne office into Duncan Street where the vehicles will be put on display.
Members are then free to check out the craft stalls and the other festivities. The Grand Parade will be held at 1.30 pm after which members can either stay longer, or make their way back home - this will be discussed on the day. Lunch is by own arrangement, members can either BYO, sample one of Braidwood’s many trendy cafes, or the tried and true pub lunch!

Windellema Trip The other STHARC event for this month is the trip to Windellema to visit the property of War-ren and Jodie.
Warren has plenty of toys to keep the boys amused including a Chev truck (which if you can get it started may win you a prize) a series
2A Landrover, a HG Premier, a Monaro and last but not least, Jodie’s Sprite.
I believe the house it still fitted with an outdoor bath- Jodie might even give us a demo of how to warm up in an outdoor bath - with a glass of port!
Members are asked to meet at the club house at 9.45am for a 10am departure am from where we will travel via Tarago for morn-ing tea and then on to the Cochrane / Thomas Farm. Lunch will be a BYO barbeque down by the creek.
