Swimming Carnival

On the 8th of February 2019, an enthusiastic Bass, Cook, Flinders and Phillip, braved the heat to swim their way to glory. The following students were victorious on the day, earning points for their houses and will be representing Blakehurst PS at the upcoming Zone Carnival.

A high level of participation in all events and positive behaviour by all students resulted in a very close finish for our House Champions for 2019. Congratulations to Flinders who achieved first place, Phillip came a close second with only four points between them and Flinders, Bass competed hard to secure third place and Cook placed fourth.

A big thank you to our dedicated parent volunteers and staff members whose assistance ensured a successful and fun day for all.

Best of luck to our competitors progressing to the next round.

Blakehurst Bites

Week 4 Community Communications – Blakehurst

As announced at the “Presentation Day” Assembly in 2018, Blakehurst PS have partnered with the registered charity ‘The School Food Project’(SFP) to assist the canteen to meet the new NSW Healthy Schools Canteen Strategy and Guideline and to ‘green’ up its menu with fresh, tasty and nutritious menu items. NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy In 2015, 1 in 5 NSW children between ages 5 and 16 were overweight or obese putting them at risk of poor health now and in their future lives. The NSW Premier’s priority is to decrease childhood overweight and obesity by 5% by 2025. In response to this priority the NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy were introduced. All NSW public schools are required to transition to this new strategy and guidelines over a three-year period concluding December 2019. The strategy aims to improve access to healthy food and drink choices in school canteens, giving students a taste for healthy food and to make the ability to make a healthy choice a very easy choice at Canteens.

What’s in the NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy and Guidelines? There are minimum activities that all schools need to undertake to meet to the new strategy. 1. All food and drinks need to be categorised as either EVERYDAY or OCCASIONAL. EVERYDAY food and drink MUST make up a MINIMUM of ¾ of the canteen menu. OCCASSIONAL food and drink should not make up more than ¼ of the canteen menu. Sugary drinks are NOT TO BE SOLD in school canteens or vending machines. 2. All OCCASIONAL packaged foods must have an HSR of 3.5 stars and above.

3. Portion sizes – There are portion limits for both EVERYDAY and OCCASSIONAL food and drinks that need to be adhered to.

4. Selling foods at the Canteen. EVERYDAY food and drinks need to stand out and sell well compared to OCCASIONAL food and drinks. Why the School Food Project? The School Food Project (SFP) is a registered charity and an independent voice in the provision of school food. SFP’s mission is “access to fresh, tasty and nutritious food for every child at school”

The School Food Project advocates for the health and wellbeing of school children. SFP prioritises fresh, tasty and nutritious foods on canteen menus and encourages the removal of processed food with additives, colours, preservatives & artificial sweeteners from canteen menus. The SFP guides canteens towards engaging with local fresh food suppliers, towards sustainable packaging solutions and streamlined menus that minimises food waste.

The SFP with its professional chef and experienced staff, work collaboratively with school communities and canteens to meet the minimum NSW Healthy School Canteen Guidelines. Canteens are further supported and encouraged by SFP to achieve higher benchmarks for the healthy food and drinks prepared in their canteens.

To complement the Canteen transition, The School Food Project delivers both parent, teacher and children education sessions. Parents and teachers learn the need for change in school food and how food can supports learning. Children engage in practical food education experiences where they have the opportunity to connect with fresh food, sample and prepare new menu items in fun nutrition and cooking workshops.

This holistic program of events aims to fully transition the school to a fresh food community, making healthy choices the new normal.

For more information about The School Food Project check out www.schoolfoodproject.org.au Where things are at A big thank you goes out the parents and students for participating in the canteen survey last term and to those who came along to presentation day and sampled some of the possible menu items.

So what did the survey tell us? We know that most children use the canteen once or twice a week. The canteen is convenient to use with good value for money. Parent’s believe the canteen’s role is to provide a viable alternative to home packed lunches with healthy hot meals on the menu. Parent respondents are most interested in the canteen supplying healthy homemade menu options like homemade burgers, picnic boxes, honey soy drumsticks and homemade chicken rissoles.

The Canteen Committee and SFP have taken on board all this valuable feedback and are working towards incorporating this feedback into the new menu for release in Week 8!

Look out for next week’s Blakehurst “BITE” where we introduce another partner in these exciting initiatives “The Root Cause”.
