Turfgrass Seed 20172
Introduction
The development of grass varieties for amenityuses is a long-term, costly and sophisticatedbusiness. Plant breeding (crossing, selectingand conducting trials) typically takes a decadeor more, before varieties are ready for releaseinto Governmental registration and Industryperformance trials. Subsequent investment inproduction, stock-holding, manufacturing andmarketing is expensive. The exploitation andutilisation of the superior varieties madeavailable by this process require expertguidance and advice.
The purpose of Turfgrass Seed is to reportcomprehensive results of available varieties intrials designed to test suitability for:
Use in winter sports pitches, such as footballand rugby fields, and municipal recreation areas(Sports Uses Trials).
Use in lawns, summer sports pitches, tenniscourts, turf and general landscaping (LawnsLandscaping, Summer Sports and Turf Trials).
Use in the intensive management seen on golfand bowling greens (Greens, Close MownTrials).
Turfgrass Seed presents the best availableinterpretation of correctly designed, accuratelyanalysed and independently supervised trials toour collective customer, the professional user ofhigh quality amenity grass cultivars.
The Turfgrass trials are conducted in Bingley,West Yorkshire.
The BSPB Amenity Committee
BSPB is the trade association, based at Ely inCambridgeshire, which represents the interestsof companies with plant breeding and seedssupply businesses in the UK. Companies canparticipate as Full Members or Associates andthe Society caters for businesses with large orsmall turnovers.
The major functions of BSPB include:
•Acting on behalf of plant breeders to Licenceand collect Royalties for the production of seedof protected varieties by third parties.
•Representing the interests of its membersopposite Government and the EuropeanCommission.
•Co-ordinating agreements with independenttrialling organisations to facilitate the productionof recommended and descriptive lists ofvarieties.
The BSPB Amenity Committee comprisesrepresentatives of all the major breedersdeveloping new cultivars for customers in theUK. Its objectives include the long term:
•Coordination and funding of independentamenity variety trialling.
•Continuity of the integrity of Turfgrass Seed asa source of impartial and valid information tobuyers and users of amenity grass seed.

3Turfgrass Seed 2017
The lists contained in this booklet are designedto enable users of Turfgrass Seed to evaluatethe suitability of different cultivars for variousamenity uses. Information for the major turfgrassspecies is presented in the form of numericalscores. In each column, larger numbers indicatea higher score for the relevant characteristic. Forinstance, cultivars with a score of 8.0 for shootdensity would be expected to produce denserturf than those with a score of 7.0.
The only exception to this general rule is therating for colour. On this scale higher numbersare darker green. These colour scores aredescriptive, to help with colour matching whenblending varieties in mixtures. They are not meritratings and in this case larger numbers do notindicate a higher merit score.
Users should read the text regarding theselection of grasses for each table to determinewhich grasses best suit their particular needs.Cultivars of the major turfgrass species havebeen placed in order of suitability for particularuses. The characteristics that have been used todetermine this ranking order have been shaded.Where more than one characteristic has beenused, a mean has been calculated and added tothe table. When calculated, this mean has beenplaced within the shaded area, to the right ofthe characteristics used in its calculation.
Cultivars at the top of each list may not bethe best cultivars for every use. Users shouldidentify which characteristics are mostimportant for their intended use and thenselect cultivars accordingly.
The tables are numbered according to theirapplicability to different end uses, thus: S Sports L General lawn and landscaping G Golf and bowling greens and other
close mown situations
Seed of all cultivars named should be availablein the UK in 2017 but in smaller amounts whereshown as LA (Limited Availability). The fullnames and addresses for the main seedsuppliers representing grasses in the tables arepresented on page 28. For grasses where nomain agent is identified, users should contactBSPB for further information.
The tables have been split into two sections togive a main table and a new cultivar table. Thelatter section is reserved for cultivars that havebeen tested in only the most recent set of trials. The scores in this section of the tables shouldbe regarded with less certainty than the scoresin the main sections of the tables. Please notethat ratings are not directly comparable amongspecies and uses.
The information presented in Turfgrass Seed2017 is from trials conducted at the STRI. Aswith any trial of living material, the performanceof the cultivars may vary in commercialmanagement.

VISUAL MERITVisual merit is an overall measure of thesuitability of the sward for its potential use.Visual merit is a combination of sward density, leaf width, disease resistance, colour and otherfactors which could influence appearance suchas cleanness of cut.
SHOOT DENSITYIn most applications of amenity grass a densesward is required, especially when a uniformand true surface is needed, such as golf greens. The number of shoots per unit area is assessedto give a measure of sward density of the sownspecies.
LIVE GROUND COVERThe live ground cover is regarded as moreimportant than shoot density in winter sportsturf. The ground cover of the sown species isrecorded monthly during the application ofartificial football wear to determine weartolerance.
SLOW RE-GROWTHMowing accounts for the majority of the cost ofmaintaining amenity grass. During the growingseason (April to October) the sward height ismeasured immediately prior to each cut.
FINENESS OF LEAFThe leaf width of different varieties of grassesvaries, especially for perennial ryegrasses andsmooth-stalked meadow-grass. Fine leaves aredesirable in fine turf and ornamental lawns. Thisassessment is not undertaken for Chewingsfescues, hard & sheep’s fescues, slendercreeping red fescues or strong creeping redfescues where there is little difference amongthese fine-leaved grasses.
CLEANNESS OF CUTTINGEach variety is scored for cleanness of cutting.
DISEASE RESISTANCEAt a time when the usage of pesticides and theproducts available for use on amenity grassesare declining, disease resistance is of everincreasing importance. All trials are monitoredfor disease and scored when significant diseaseinfections occur.
COLOURCultivars are assessed for genetic colour in bothsummer and winter. This is a relativeassessment between different varieties andcolour will vary depending upon managementand fertiliser use.
RECOVERYThe winter sports turf trial is scored for twomonths following the application of artificialfootball wear to give an indication of individualvarieties ability to recover from wear. Higherscoring varieties are less likely to need intensiverenovation in the closed season.

Turfgrass Seed 2017
The perennial ryegrass cultivars in Table S1(pages 6 and 7) are ranked on the mean of liveground cover and visual merit during wear. These characteristics are important for sportspitches receiving intensive wear during winter, such as football and Rugby pitches.
Users should identify the particular propertiesthat are important in their individual situationsand choose cultivars that score well for thosecharacteristics. In football and Rugby pitches forexample, it may be better to choose a cultivarwith reduced susceptibility to red thread, if thiscan be done without compromising too muchon wear tolerance. Where good appearance isrequired before wear, or in low wear situations, good shoot density, fineness of leaf andcleanness of cut scores will be important.
In all wear situations regular over-seeding canhave beneficial results. It is strongly advised thatthis forms part of the end of season renovationprogramme. Also the addition of new grassesthrough over-seeding during the playing seasonwill help maintain ground cover.
Cultivars of smooth-stalked meadow-grassesare shown in order of their performance underfootball-type wear for inclusion in winter pitches(Table S2). Once established, smooth-stalkedmeadow-grass can be as hard wearing asperennial ryegrass and usually has bettertolerance of close mowing.
Its rhizomes give good recovery from wear andsome drought tolerance. However, establishment of this grass is slow and bestresults can only be achieved if at least 12months is left between sowing and use, TableS2 (page 8). Trials are sown in spring with wearbeing applied the following autumn.
Generally, cultivars of tall fescue form turf thatwould be acceptable for many coarse turfgrassuses. However, they are no substitute forperennial ryegrass in normal turf situations in theUK. Tall fescues are slower in establishment, coarser in leaf texture, and as a result, lessattractive in appearance. They may however, have a place under dry or low fertility conditions.Tall fescues have also been used successfullywhere fairly tall (15 - 20 cm) but still erectswards are desirable, such as the grassed areassurrounding airfields. New improved varieties ofthis grass type, some with rhizomes, are startingto become available. These produce acceptablelawns but still do not match perennial ryegrassfor wear tolerance.
Tufted hair-grass is tolerant of damp and shadyconditions and has been included in some seedmixtures for stadiums. This grass canaccumulate a little more organic matter at thesurface than some of the traditional sportsgrasses like perennial ryegrass.

Tetraploid cultivars of perennial ryegrass are starting to be used in specialist seed mixtures for sports uses. These grasses should not be confused with more persistent diploid perennial ryegrass that are morecommonly used in sports turf mixtures. In like-for-like comparisons, the traditional diploid grasses havegreater wear tolerance and produce a more attractive sward. However, the tetraploid grasses havecharacteristics that can be exploited alongside traditional grasses. The main benefits are quickergermination and establishment in cool conditions and increased seedling vigour. Once established, theyalso tend to maintain growth longer than diploid cultivars as temperatures fall in the winter. This allowsthese grasses to replace lost grass cover during winter wear. The ratings presented are comparable withthose given for diploid perennial ryegrass cultivars in Table S1.

Perennial ryegrasses are ranked in Table L1(pages 11-12), smooth-stalked meadow-grassesin Table L2 (page 13), tall fescues in Table L8(page 18) and tufted hair-grass in Table L9 (page18) on their mean performance for shootdensity, fineness of leaf, slow regrowth andvisual merit.
Fescues are ranked in Tables L3 to L6 (pages14-17) on their mean performance for shootdensity and visual merit.
Bentgrasses are ranked in Table L7 (pages 17and 18) on the mean of their shoot density, fineness of leaf and visual merit.
In addition to differences among cultivars, thereare some general sub-species differencesamong the red fescues. Chewings fescues incomparison with slender creeping red fescuestend to be more resistant to diseases. They alsotend to “green up” faster in the spring. Theslender creeping red fescues are more droughttolerant and maintain colour and growth betterin the autumn and early winter. Both Chewingsand slender creeping red fescues are moretolerant of closer mowing than strong creepingred fescues and produce denser turf at allheights of cut.
Cultivars of hard fescue are shown in order ofsuitability for use in fine turf in Table L6. Thesegrasses, along with the sheep’s fescues may beused for fine turf in very dry or infertileconditions.
They are also suited to low maintenanceconditions and may be of value inenvironmentally sensitive areas, particularlywhere the natural grasses are of the samespecies. Please note that sheep’s and fineleaved sheep’s fescues tend to grow in differentdirections and as such do not produce auniform sward. Also, most of these grasseshave been found to be fairly intolerant of wearand as a result should only be considered foruse in ornamental and low maintenance areas. In contrast Quatro sheep’s fescue has beenfound to be fairly wear tolerant. In golf andbowling green trials at the STRI this cultivar hasbeen shown to have comparable wear toleranceto Chewings and slender creeping red fescues.
They may however, have a place under dry or low fertility conditions.Tall fescues have also been used successfullywhere fairly tall (15- 20cm) but still erect swardsare desirable, such as the grassed areassurrounding airfields. New improved cultivars ofthis grass type, some with rhizomes, are startingto become available. These grasses producelawns of acceptable quality, particularly wherefertility and water might be restricted.
Tufted hair-grass is naturally adapted to dampand shady conditions. In turf the grass forms adense upright sward, which is fairly tolerant ofwear.

Cultivars of bentgrass species are listed in orderof their suitability for use in very close mownturf, such as golf and bowling greens in TableG1 (page 20).
For very fine turf, such as golf greens andbowling greens, the finer and denser cultivars ofA. capillaris appear to perform best undertraditional UK management and growingconditions. Higher management inputs arerequired to maintain creeping bentgrasses.
Velvet bentgrass (A. canina) producesexceptionally dense turf and generally hasbetter drought tolerance than the otherbentgrass species. However, it also producesmore thatch than other bents and this wouldneed to be controlled to maintain the very goodsurface, which this grass can produce.
Cultivars of Chewings fescue and slendercreeping red fescue are shown in order of theirsuitability for use in very close mown turf (golfand bowling greens, mown at 4-7mm) in TablesG2 (page 21) and G3 (page 22). As for thebentgrasses, the order was determined from themean of each cultivars visual merit and shootdensity scores. These grasses can produceacceptable greens under restricted wateringand fertility regimes that would limit theperformance of some bentgrasses.Table G4 (page 23) describes the performanceof perennial ryegrass cultivars that have beenevaluated under close mowing (5 mm summerand 7 mm winter). These grasses should beused in situations where the need for quickestablishment and wear tolerance is combinedwith a degree of close mowing. They should notbe seen as a replacement for bentgrasses orfine fescues in golf or bowling greens.

The performance of strong creeping red fescues, hard fescues and Sheep’s fescues have beenevaluated as a group for use in close mown turf (Table G5). These grasses tolerate a degree of closemowing and can form an attractive close mown turf. They could be used as an alternative to, or incombination with, Chewings and slender creeping red fescue for many fine turf uses. However, theywill not match superior Chewings and slender creeping red fescue cultivars for use in high qualitygolf greens. Sheep’s fescues tend to form noticeable growth patterns (whorls) in fine turf. This is notunattractive but can make them difficult to stripe up with a mower.
