Letter from the President 2021– No. 4
Welcome to the May 2021 BUZZ and a very special welcome to new
members who have recently joined U3A Bendigo.
New and renewing members are reminded to collect their 2021 name badges
from the office on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Members
are asked to wear their name badges when attending U3A activities as this
helps Convenors and members to recognise each other. It also helps in times
of emergency.
The Convenors’ Meeting held on 24 March was an excellent opportunity for
Convenors to give their feedback on enrolment and on the reintroduction of activities. While many
Convenors are making use of U-MAS, there are some who find it challenging. Please email Lyn at
[email protected] if you need help navigating U-MAS. My thanks to Convenors for their
feedback and for the tremendous contribution they make in providing activities for our members.
The New Members Morning Tea was also held on 24 March and proved a great day for new members
to learn about U3A Bendigo and get to know one another, Committee members and Convenors.
About 30 members were in attendance. Thank you to Marion Richardson for organising catering for
the morning tea.
The March Social Gathering was held in the afternoon of 24 March with a free BBQ sausage sizzle
and entertainment from the Theatre, Poetry and Guitar Groups. Through this special Social
Gathering about 50 members celebrated the return of activities and enjoyed a very pleasant
afternoon. My thanks to everyone who contributed to making this day such a joyous return for our
members, especially Maureen Cross and Helen Bandrowski for organising and cooking the sausages;
to the numerous members who shared their various talents, and to Barb Ritchie for organising the
afternoon.
U3A Bendigo held its first Bunnings BBQ for the year on Saturday, 10 April where members
volunteered to cook and sell some 500 sausages. After costs, $900 was raised which will help in
running costs. The BBQs are a great way for members to participate and get to know each other
while working together. My thanks to Maureen Cross and the volunteers who helped. The next
Bunnings BBQ is scheduled for 2 October. Members interested in helping can sign up on U-MAS and
enrol in Bunnings BBQ or contact the office on Tuesday mornings.
The Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday, 28 April 2021 commencing at
2:00 p.m. at St Mary’s Hall, as part of the April Social Gathering. The Choir has been
invited to perform so as to encourage members to attend. Members need to register on
U-MAS by selecting Social Gatherings April AGM to confirm their attendance.
Members will need to wear their 2021 name badges to be eligible to vote.
I am delighted to advise new member Dianne Elliott has offered to look after the Library. Dianne is a
retired Librarian and is interested in maintaining the collections. My thanks to Dianne for taking on
this much loved and used resource for our members.

Please volunteer to go on the roster for U3A Sausage sizzle fund raising efforts at Bunnings Kangaroo Flat. The next Sausage sizzle is on Saturday, October 2nd. Each shift is for 2 hours, starting at 8.30 and finishing at approximately 4.30. Please ring Maureen Cross on 0448 518 682 or email. [email protected] to express your interest.

A NEW U3A LIBRARIAN
A new member of U3A Bendigo has agreed to be our new librarian, Dianne Elliott is an accom-
plished Librarian to take on this local Librarian role.
We'd like to convey our deepest thanks to Barbara McDougall, Mary Fry and Michael Gallagher
for all the initial hard work they undertook in setting up the Library. Barbara painstakingly
learned about the technology that could help her undertake the role, while Michael gave his time
and knowledge to train and support the Library Team.
Hopefully, everything that has been done to date will be the foundation upon which Dianne can
build the Library into the future. Dianne began to research how the Library works over a week-
end. Lyn met up with Dianne one Friday and showed her the website, Library Notes and the Li-
brary Archives. Dianne was more than happy to read up on how Barbara and Mary managed the
Library, so she doesn't re-invent the wheel. Dianne is keen to learn the system and will contact
Michael as necessary.

BENDIGO U3A GUITAR BAND NEWS > The Bendigo U3A guitar band want to thank the organisers and the lovely social day audience, on 24/3, and the ones who got up to dance just made
our day. An amazing array of talent by all the other performances! > Two days later we played at Free-dom Aged Care. Last year, in Decem-ber we were booked by City of Greater Bendigo to play at two ven-ues and the residents had been starved of outside entertainment over 2020, so even more of a privi-lege to perform.

U3A Genealogy/Family Research Group I’m pleased to advise that a new Genealogy/Family Research Group
has been formed here at U3A Bendigo. The new Genealogy/Family Research Group will be held on the 3rd Monday of each month from 1.30 till 3.30pm in Room 1 at St. Mary's, Kangaroo Flat.
At this stage, I see this as a group where we have guest speakers, watch videos on various aspects of research, arrange outings to relevant exhibitions and places, bounce ideas off each other and share tips, etc., on the best means of finding your missing ancestors. To start off, we’ll have a limit of 12 people in the group and at this stage we have a couple of vacancies. If you would like to join us, please contact me on [email protected] Cheryl Scully, Convenor

THIS MONTH NOTES
During March, 32 different groups used the rooms at St Mary’s, with a further 10 in the hall. As the
Discussion Group is meeting at the Bendigo Club, Room 1 remains free on Monday afternoons. This
will allow for new groups to be added to our growing list of activities.
A Genealogy/Family Research Group is being convened by Cheryl Scully that will meet monthly on
the third Monday afternoon of each month commencing on Monday, 19 April at 1:30 to 3:30 pm. In-
terested members can enrol via U-MAS, or contact the office on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 am to
12:00 pm. For more information, email [email protected].
St Mary’s has advised that groups using the hall from Tuesday, 20 July to Friday, 23 July will
need to make other arrangements as St Mary’s needs the Hall and Narthex to prepare for its Art
Show on 23 to 25 July. Affected Convenors have been notified with most choosing to not hold their
activities during that period. The Choir is hoping to continue by using the Church, which is being
made available.
The office is officially open each Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm. Our thanks to a great
team of office volunteers who generally roster themselves on every second week. It is
wonderful to see the office up and running so well. They are a great team and work
well together. New volunteers continue to be sought to create another team that can
open on another day. There are some members willing to volunteer in the office on
Thursdays but at least three more are needed before this can go ahead. If you would
like to help out in the office, please contact the office.
Tuesday Talks are scheduled to resume on 1 June. As Coordinator, Jennifer Goddard is seeking
members who would like to have their names added to speak at a Tuesday Talk. If you have an idea
for a Tuesday Talk or would like to give a talk, please let Jennifer know.
The Convenors’ Meeting held on Wednesday, 24 March provided an opportunity for Convenors to
give feedback on the Enrolment Days and on any other issues of concern. Most Convenors seemed
satisfied in how the Enrolment Days were managed. There is still concern that some members at-
tending activities have not yet paid and some members are yet to receive or pick up their name
badges. This is being addressed with Convenors coming in to collect name badges for their groups
that are not meeting at St Mary’s and by passing out name badges to members attending groups
meeting at St Mary’s.
Please contact the Activities Coordination Team at [email protected] or phone the office on
0490 858 469 if you have a membership or activity enquiry.

Book Review—WATER UNDER WATER Generally speaking book groups like The Readers of U3A Group (RUGs) read litera-
ture, both fiction and non-fiction. By literature, we mean books that have artistic merit
and convey thought-provoking ideas. Literature embraces large themes and the reader
is encouraged to interpret these ideas and draw conclusions about the text. For Univer-
sity of the Third Age members, the reading of literature keeps their minds active and
using skills acquired long ago.
In December 2020, the RUGs read an excellent piece of Australian literary fiction, “Water Under Water” by
NSW author Peter Rix. The story provoked a lively and engaging discussion about the issues.
SYNOPSIS: The central character of “Water Under Water” is Tom Campion, a boy born with Down Syn-
drome. Despite his intellectual disability, Tom is high functioning and lives an active life, which he embrac-
es with passion. He has an engaging personality and an unswerving belief in the love of his father Jim. The
story follows his path from infancy to early adulthood and explores his relationship with his dad.
Jim is a work-obsessed high achiever, who struggles to really love his disabled son. Tom’s mother Fran has a
100% commitment to her child, and Jim’s diffidence gradually erodes the bonds that hold the marriage to-
gether.
Tom and his friends in the Adventurers Club, young adults with special needs, go on a white water rafting
expedition in the company of disability support workers and Jim. Father and son have long enjoyed a shared
passion for water sports. The rafting trip is an opportunity for them to build stronger bonds, now that Tom
is no longer a child. The organisers and parents have to balance competing ideas, namely, the need to pro-
tect vulnerable individuals versus the need to allow these individuals to take risks and enjoy new experienc-
es. Things don’t go to plan, and the subsequent events tear at the heart of the meaning of family and love.
COMMENTS: Author Peter Rix is the father of a child with Down Syndrome and his personal experiences
infuse the novel with a strong sense of authenticity. We see both the ups and downs of raising a child with
an intellectual disability. Blessed with an ebullient personality, Tom loves life and loves people with great
verve. But Tom also makes mistakes and has bouts of uncertainty and depression. The author’s skill in cre-
ating a truly original character in Tom infuses this novel with a credibility far beyond usual expectations.
As with many contemporary novels, the story jumps back and forward in time, and the reader has to concen-
trate on tying together the various narrative strands. The gulf between Jim’s head and his heart is only
gradually revealed. Unwise words uttered casually by his mate Andy long ago have tainted Jim’s attitudes
and made him doubt his own capacity for loving this remarkable human, his son Tom. Shining through is
Tom’s own voice speaking to the reader about what’s on his mind. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Tom’s
love for his dad is unconditional, which makes Jim’s uncertainly all the more poignant.
In part, this is the story of an Australian boy’s coming of age. On another level, the novel explores the mean-
ing of love in marriage, family, friends, society. The book provides valuable insights into the lives of people
living with disabilities. It evokes a range of emotions in the reader – laughter, anger, sadness, contempla-
tion.
Most members of RUGs have had a connection, personal or professional, with disabled people and with trag-
edy. Our discussion of this finely crafted novel was intense, insightful and very satisfying. “Water Under
Water” is a modern Australian classic which deserves to be read by everyone.

MARY QUANT: FASHION REVOLUTIONARY — EXHIBITION
20 March to 11 July 2021
Mary Quant had an international impact on the fashion world during the swinging
1960s in London. She made fashion more accessible to the generation of the Beatles.
She began a cultural revolution through fashion with her bold designs, e.g. the
miniskirt.
Jessica Bridgfoot, the director of the Bendigo Art Gallery, has stated: “Fashion is the manifestation of
human art and identity. It helps us artistically communicate who we are, who we want to be, where
we are going, and where we have been.”
Bendigo was also touched by this dynamic decade, as evidenced in a parallel exhibition ‘Modern
revolution: Bendigo and the 1960s’ between 2 April and 29 August this year. It will highlight the
insights and memorabilia of selected people who experienced this decade here.
Please consult the Bendigo Gallery website for any of the special events related to the Mary Quant
Exhibition. E. g. The Gallery curator Emma Busowsky Cox will hold an introductory talk on
Friday 11 June (10.30-11am). Bookings required but the events are free.
CHOIR NEWS
Welcome to Choir for 2021. We had a rocky start, with some rehearsals being outdoors in the un-
dercover area so that we wouldn’t have to wear masks, and me having to miss a rehearsal due to
a pulled muscle in my back, but things seem to have settled.
We have approximately 20 members attending, and have started to learn some new songs as well
as revising songs from previous years.
At present, most nursing homes aren’t able to have choirs in to perform, but we do have a perfor-
mance at the U3A AGM on Wednesday April 28th.
NOTE—CHOIR: The AGM begins at 2pm, so you will need to be there no later than 1.45 so
we can have a quick warm up.
Happy Singing, Carol Aylward

GARDENING AND GROWING
THINGS
Late March our U3A garden group had the pleasure of visiting the
magnificent garden of Tom and Carol in Golden Gully, just out of
Kangaroo Flat. Carol was most generous in agreeing to have 30
members visit on Thursday morning and another 30 on Friday
morning. This garden of one acre had a long winding road up to
the house from the front gates. The beautifully designed garden
was surrounded on the fence line by tall trees protecting the
smaller plants and shrubs on the inside. All the brick paving,
tiling and rockwork lining the garden beds was done by the very
artistic and talented Tom. The fish pond, the big basket with a handle made of rocks, garden ornaments and
seating were all in the right places. Winding paths through the garden kept leading you to something new
and delightful. Morning tea followed in a covered area behind the house. Many thanks to Carmel and Tom
for a wonderful morning.
Our early March garden visit was to the ever wonderful Mica
Grange. Their roses, flowering plants and vegetable garden
always seem to be, no matter when you visit, in perfect condition.
The art display of metal work was excellent, their plants,
including succulents, the jams, relishes, etc. all excellent. Morning
tea of coffee, scones jam and cream ended another lovely visit. Our
thanks go to Mica Grange for a lovely morning.
A few interesting notes about Salvias, a member of the mint
family, still flowering profusely in many of our gardens –
There are over 500 members of the salvia family and all of them
are sensational in the sun. Salvia comes from the Latin Salvare, a
reference to the plant’s ability to heal. Ancient herbalists used
various species of sage to cure anything from snake bites to
epilepsy. S. sclarea ‘Clary sage’ derives its common name from its
reputed ability to improve vision. More recently, S. officinalis has
become popular as a natural antiseptic and mouthwash for sore
throats and gum disorders. Sage wine was administered as a
soothing tonic for body and mind while sage beer was notoriously
intoxicating.
Varieties of Salvias
The most flamboyant and well-known of all the salvias is the red
bedding variety Salvia splendens, with cultivar names such as
‘Blaze of Fire’, ‘Fireball’ and ‘Bonfire’. Like most of the showiest garden
plants, it hails from Brazil and in Australia it epitomizes tropical and sub-
tropical gardening. Salvia splendens grows to approximately 45cm high and,
although often cultivated as an annual, can be treated as a perennial in all
but the coldest climates.
Some newer varieties like Salvia ‘Heatwave and ‘Wish Collection’ are more
compact with a rounded canopy and love flowering through the warmer
months which makes them perfect for small garden and pots.
[continued on page 14]
[more photos on page 12] Page 13
[continued from page 13]
‘Blue Bedder’ and ‘Touch of Blue’ describe the wide
variety of shades this delightful species displays.
Some varieties sport blue stems, and because S.
farinacia is the best in the genus for flowering ar-
ranging they can be
used in great effect in
posy arrangements.
Finally, as a plant that
not only provides
bright colour, but as a
bonus, brings with it a
delightful perfume to
the garden, it should
also be considered. Salvia dorisiana or ‘Fruity Sage’
is a winter flowering salvia that is a delight to the
senses on both levels. The hot pink blooms that
appear from late June until early October are a
bright spark in the garden and are relished by hon-
eyeaters of all kind.
This only covers a small number of the number of
salvias available, they are fast gaining a reputa-
tion for variety, value and versatility. If you’ve got
a sunny spot, why not give them a go.
