19th Sunday of Ordinary Time Sunday 9th August 2020

Year A, Weekday Cycle 2, Psalter Week 2

Dear Parishioners,

Above is one of my favourite painting by the late Dutch Catholic artist and priest, Fr Sieger Köder. As an artist he had the gift to grasping the heart of the Gospel. I encour-age you all to discover more of his art work. But most importantly never be afraid to reach out and let God - Jesus - grasp you by the hand!

God Bless you all! Fr. Kieren

socially distant from the celebrant. Readers may re-

move their face coverings at the lectern to read

LIVE-STREAMED MASSES Live streamed Masses (both Weekday and Sunday) will continue.

Attending Sunday Mass Please do consider joining us for Weekday or Sunday Mass. In order to attend Mass, please register your interest and your preferred Mass time, by emailing Amanda (only) by 12 noon on Wednesday or phoning the Presbytery on Wednesday morning. This will help me get an idea of who might want to attend. Those who live in the same household may share a bench as a family. Please note that you do not have to register to attend weekday Mass.

Catechists for the Sacrament of Confirmation over the last year a number of parishioners have registered an interest in becoming a catechist, sadly due to the Lockdown we have been unable to move forward. However, we would NOW like to actively recruit catechists and offer them some training.

If you are interested please email your details so that I can forward them to Fr. Michael Deas who will co-ordinate the training. If you would like to begin some informal training you might like to click on the following link and explore the course we hope to follow, as well as downloading the 'Decision Point' App: https://dynamiccatholic.com/confirmation. You can also watch the videos, and download the workbook and leader's guide, and it's all free. Provisionally, we are especially focussing on Sessions 1, 3, 7, 8, 10 and 12.

Catechists for 1st Ho-ly Communion - Sac-ramental programme if you are interested in helping form in their Catholic faith our young parishioners and prepare them to receive the Lord in the

Blessed Sacrament for the first time, please contact Fr. Kieren, Bernie Lomas or Charlotte Morrison.

Gift Aid can I remind all those who have generously do-nated to the Parish that UNLESS you have filled in a new Gift Aid form for “St. John Henry Newman” we will not be able to claim on your donations. Please contact Amanda (via email or during office hours for further in-formation).

Parish Social Media can I politely ask that parishioners refrain from sending stickers etc to my messenger page. I use this page as a means of contact only.

New Parish Registrars many thanks to the parishioners who has come forward to join our registrar team. I have now the forms for you to fill in, please collect from me after Sunday Masses. If you contact me to arrange pick up that would be great - please return them to me.

Getting Your Child Baptised

The Code of Canon Law

states: “Parents are

obliged to see to it that in-

fants are bap-tised within

the first weeks after birth”

(867)

This canon, although not practical for many reasons, reminds us of the importance and urgency of the sacrament of Baptism.

As a Parish we follow the Diocesan Baptism Poli-cy:

In order for a baby/child (under the age of 7) to be baptised, the Catholic family, (resident in the Parish of St. John Henry Newman) if not already practising their faith, must begin to attend Sunday Mass for a minimum of at least 6 weeks before a baptism date can be discussed.

To discuss this further please contact Fr. Kieren or speak to him after Sunday Mass. After confirmation of a date for Baptism, a Preparation meeting must be arranged.

For children over 7 and for adults considering be-coming a Catholic please contact Fr. Kieren via the Presbytery Office (0161) 7482328 or via email (see front of newsletter).

Understanding the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

According to Pope Benedict XVI:

“By contemplating Mary in heavenly glory, we understand that the earth is not the definitive homeland for us either, and that if we live with our gaze fixed on eternal goods we will one day share in this same glory and the

earth will become more beautiful.

Consequently, we must not lose our serenity and peace even amid the thousands of daily difficulties. The luminous sign of Our Lady taken up into Heaven shines out even more brightly when sad shadows of suffering and

violence seem to loom on the horizon.

We may be sure of it: from on high, Mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern, dispels the gloom in moments of darkness and distress, reassures

us with her motherly hand.

Supported by awareness of this, let us continue confidently on our path of Christian commitment wherever Providence may lead us. Let us forge ahead in our lives under Mary's guidance” [General Audience, August 16,

2006].
