North Ave. , Sanger, California 93657 THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads “Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) connects this week’s scrip- tures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abun- dantly” (John 10:10).

MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS FOR WORLD DAY OF VOCATIONS

Now, on this 54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, I would like to reflect on the missionary dimension of our Chris-tian calling. Those who drawn by God’s voice and determined to follow Jesus soon discover within themselves an irre-pressible desire to bring the Good News to their brothers and sisters through proclamation and the service of chari-ty. All Christians are called to be mis-sionaries of the Gospel! As disciples, we do not receive the gift of God’s love for our personal consolation, nor are we called to promote ourselves, or a busi-ness concern. We are simply men and women touched and transformed by the joy of God’s love, who cannot keep this experience just to ourselves. For “the Gospel joy which enlivens the commu-nity of disciples is a missionary joy (Evangelii Gaudium, 21). Commitment to mission is not some-thing added on to the Christian life as a kind of decoration, but is instead an es-sential element of faith itself. A rela-tionship with the Lord entails being sent out into the world as prophets of his word and witnesses of his love.
