Dear Friends:
Odds are many of you have seen a movie based on a comic book. Spiderman, The Avengers, and Bat-
man among others have become blockbusters. Most of these comic heroes have an enduring lineage,
and recently, there is an influence to bring comics into the digital age. The biggest hit so far has been
Comixology which puts issues of paper comics onto phones and tablets. However, the industry is still ex-
perimenting with targeted digital mediums, and the market still has a very high demand for the tradi-
tional print versions.
In April I was asked to facilitate a "Q and A" session on chapter growth and communications at the Lead-
ership Training Seminar sponsored by the MidAmerica Council of the IMA. The MidAmerica Council is the
council to which the Calumet Chapter belongs and includes a host of IMA Chapters located in Illinois and
Wisconsin. It was a good opportunity for chapter leaders to get together and discuss what has worked
and what has failed so that we can learn and serve you better.
One of the points made was that some chapters felt the CPE webinars offered by the IMA have become
arduous. There was a feeling of fretfulness because of the competition encountered with other organi-
zations for attendees as well as the IMA. The IMA usually offers at least 2 webinars each month and we
try to publicize one each month in this newsletter. I feel they are an excellent membership benefit and
hope that you take advantage. I understand that for many reasons you may be unable to attend the
monthly meetings, however, I want you to know that does not mean the chapter does not value your
membership. We do even if you can’t attend any meetings. We want you to associate with the Calumet
Chapter of the IMA 081 Hammond.
Another point made was that many chapters, such as the Calumet Hammond Chapter, take surveys of
their events. This is an easy "back and forth" and lets us know from the attendees what is working and
what isn't working. We would also like to hear from the members who aren't attending, what can we
do differently to attract you to a meeting? You can always e-mail me, and I know that I have some tech-
nical issues recently, so I created a new, reliable account at gmail: [email protected] I look for-
ward to your comments. Together we made 2011-12 a great year, but we need your ideas on how to
keep the growth moving upward and onward.

IMA Webinar Save the Date for IMA's free Leadership Academy Webinar
Program Title: Personal and Professional Life Balance Date: Tuesday, August 21, 2012 Time: 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time
Field of Study: Personal Development
Research Area: Business Performance Management
Presenter: V. Marcine Johnson, CPA President & CEO—Accounting and Tax Advisory Services, Inc.
We are always striving to reach the "perfect balance" and maintain it. In the past, many people have defined balance as a fixed center point between two opposing forces. At times, we end up resisting people and activities in our lives because we see them as a threat to our balanced state of mind. Using this definition, we constantly fail and label ourselves "out of balance." Balance becomes an unattain-able ideal. Instead, the image of balance is being "in the flow" in our lives. That level of fluidity allows us to more easily interact with the world in a comfortable, nurturing way. Rather than fighting against circum-stances, we first flow with them and then can more easily shift the energy if desired. This definition of balance is more realistic and more easily attainable. When we are fully in balance, we are in a state of high intention, awareness, and trust.
Learning Objectives: Through participation in this webinar, you will be able to:
Recognize the “Superhuman Syndrome”
Assess your personal and professional balance
Clarify the goals and values that drive your career and personal life
Demonstrate setting limits, saying “no,” and asking for help
Develop strategies to replenish your mental energy and physical stamina
IMA members will receive (1.5) NASBA-approved CPE credits for attending this event. Note: Recorded webinars are not eligible for CPE credits.

Don't Panic - Stay Focused
By Melissa Leonard Gleim CMA Product Manager
This month's column will address two key matters that all CMA Exam candidates can use no matter where they are in the exam process. Whether you are just starting out, in the middle of your review, or sitting for the exam tomorrow, you must stay both calm and focused. From the time you begin reviewing to the very last day before your exam, you will most likely run into times where your confidence is tested by questions you repeatedly answer incorrectly. This is when it is imperative to focus on the study units you consis-tently perform poorer on and to not worry about one or two problematic questions. While you are taking practice quizzes, mentally re-hearse what you will do on exam day. Imagine your-self working through your exam and knowing the correct answers. If you get to a question you are unsure of, remember to immediately eliminate two answer choices. Then, pick the best answer choice from the two remaining. This skill - educated guess-ing - is one you will have to use on exam day. You want to make sure you answer each and every question to maximize your score. Mentally prepare yourself for this very important test-taking skill. Remember to relax. This is one of the most impor-tant things you can do as a CMA Exam candidate, but it is something most candidates struggle with. Throughout your preparation, if you find yourself getting frustrated, take a walk, read a book, or call a friend. The objective is to change gears and do something that relaxes you. These steps will help you recharge between study sessions. Relaxation shouldn't just occur during the weeks leading up to the exam, but also the days before and on your actual exam day. Don't cram during the few days before your exam. It is better to be re-freshed and ready than burned out from last-minute cramming. Cramming will only harm you. On exam day, don't take your books to the exam site, as it will only distract you. Once you are actu-
ally sitting in front of your computer at the testing center, keep your focus on answering each and every question. Allowing yourself to concentrate only on each question as you come to it will prevent you from becoming over-whelmed by the exam as a whole. Don't panic; just re-main focused and relaxed. You will be confident that you have done everything you can to adequately prepare. Share your success! Maybe you have already passed the CMA exam and would like to share your test-taking tech-niques with other candidates. Also, send me your ques-tions if you want more tips on how to successfully meet your goals. Email me at [email protected] with your questions and feedback. Gleim is committed to helping you become a CMA. Your Calumet IMA Chapter has partnered with Gleim to ensure your success on the CMA exam! Working together, we
will provide the necessary tools to prepare you for this challenging task. As a Calumet Chapter member, you receive significant discounts on the Gleim CMA Review materials and Gleim CPE. Retrospective: Abraham Lincoln, “The Gettysburg Address”
November 19, 1863; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
272 words. 3 minutes long. Yet, the Gettysburg Address is unarguably one of the greatest pieces of rhetoric in Ameri-
can history. Dr. J Rufus Fears (one of the great modern orators) argues that the Gettysburg Address, along with the
Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, form the three founding documents of American freedom. The Bat-
tle of Gettysburg left 8,000 men dead. The bodies were too numerous to bury properly and many were at first placed
in shallow graves. Weeks after the battle, heads and arms were sticking up through the ground and the smell of rot-
ting flesh was sickening. Money was raised for a proper reburial, and it was decided that the new cemetery should be
dedicated, to sweeten the air of Gettysburg, to solemnize this place of death. As was traditional, a great orator, in this
case, Edward Everett, was asked to give a solemn and grand speech as a memorial to the fallen men. Lincoln was
asked 2 months later, almost as a causal afterthought. He was to add a few remarks to Everett’s, a function much like
the man with the ceremonial scissors who cuts the ribbon. Legends has it that Lincoln’s remarks were the product of
pure inspiration, penned on the back of an envelope on the train chugging its way to the soon-to-be hallowed grounds
of Gettysburg. On the day of the dedication, Everett kept the crowd enthralled for a full two hours. Lincoln got up,
gave his speech, and sat down even before the photographer had finished setting up for a picture. There was a long
pause before anyone applauded, and then the applause was scattered and polite. Not everyone immediately realized
the magnificence of Lincoln’s address. But some did. In a letter to Lincoln, Everett praised the President for his elo-
quent and concise speech, saying, “I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of
the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes.” And of course, in time, we have come to fully appreciate the
genius and beauty of the words spoken that day. Dr. Fears argues that Lincoln’s address did more than memorialize
the fallen soldiers at Gettysburg; it accomplished nothing short of transforming the entire meaning of the Civil War.
There were no details of the battle mentioned in the speech, no mentioning of soldier’s names, of Gettysburg itself, of
the South nor the Union, states rights nor secession. Rather, Lincoln meant the speech to be something far larger, a
discourse on the experiment testing whether government can maintain the proposition of equality. At Gettysburg, the
Constitution experienced a transformation. The first birth has been tainted by slavery. The men, of both North and
South, lying in the graves at Gettysburg had made an atoning sacrifice for this great evil. And the Constitution would
be reborn, this time living up to its promises of freedom and equality for all.
The Speech
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate – we cannot consecrate – we cannot hallow – this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this na-tion, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
