Dear Friends of Montefiore,
As members of the Board of Trustees, we have been gratified to be part of Montefiore’s role
in advancing the state of medicine, as well as in providing the highest level of care to the
underserved of our communities. Remarkably, Montefiore has done so while growing to
what is now a financially strong, $2 billion enterprise. And while we still face many ongoing
challenges, we eagerly look to the future.
With The Campaign for Montefiore, we hope to engage you, the next generation of socially
conscious activists, in our efforts to sustain the positive and far-reaching impact Montefiore
has on the health and social welfare of the people and communities we serve. The Campaign
looks to speed the development and application of new knowledge, expand the capacity of
our Centers of Excellence and deliver the medical miracles that save lives. Equally important
is our commitment to extend our reach and do more for the community’s most vulnerable
citizens. With your help, we can empower patients with education about their health and
illnesses. We can embrace information technologies to improve diagnosis and treatment,
reduce medical errors and protect patient safety. We can demonstrate to the nation the
benefits of a well-managed, multi-level care system, more equitably distributed services and
better cost control.
We invite you to learn more about our goals and encourage you to be part of the Campaign
for Montefiore. With your help, we’re confident we can give back to society in wise, enduring
ways, build on Montefiore’s record of success and
create a brighter future for all.

EXCEPTIONAL CARE. VISIONARY THINKING.
The drive to go beyond accepted procedures
and to imagine, investigate and innovate new
approaches. To find better ways to treat life-
threatening conditions and, more importantly,
the people who suffer from them. This is why
Montefiore is consistently recognized as one of
New York’s top acute care hospitals, and why so
many of the region’s most difficult, high-risk
cases are referred here.
Always at the forefront of improving clinical care, Montefiore Medical
Center is home to many significant “firsts” in the world of healthcare,
healthcare management and healthcare delivery.
ONE OF THE FIRST TO EMBRACE DIVERSITYMontefiore was among the first medical institutions in the nation to accept
African-American residents, to invite women onto the house staff and to
open a social services department. Currently, the Montefiore staff includes
1,300 physicians of all genders and races in more than 50 clinical areas.
THE NATION’S FIRST ADOLESCENT AIDS PROGRAMThe AIDS program that became a model for the nation was developed at
Montefiore, making it among the first hospitals to seek innovative ideas in
AIDS prevention and care. Two examples of this scientific and social
leadership are the Adolescent AIDS Program and its Connect To Protect
effort, a collaboration of medical researchers and community leaders
focusing on at-risk youth in urban settings like the Bronx.
THE WORLD’S FIRST HEADACHE CENTERToday at the Montefiore Headache Center, headache sufferers receive
focused attention from a dedicated team of neurologists, psychologists,
psychiatrists and nutritionists. In fact, Fiorinal©, a popular medication for
tension and migraine headaches, was developed at Montefiore.
AMONG THE NATION’S FIRST DIVISIONS OF BIOETHICSWhen medical science conflicts with personal beliefs, patients, family
members, physicians and caregivers can consult with the Montefiore
Bioethics Consultation Service. A bioethical team made up of ethicists,
physicians, clergy and hospital legal counsel can help clarify issues and
reach amenable decisions.
THE COUNTRY’S FIRST HOSPITAL DENTAL RESIDENCY PROGRAMMontefiore has the largest dental graduate residency program in the country
and one of the largest dental implant practices with 1,500 implantation
procedures a year. The implant practice is also one of the few using digital
imaging to improve outcomes.

Structured around distinguished Centers of Excellence, Montefiore provides
state-of-the-art care in a broad range of medical specialties including
Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cancer Care, Transplantation, Children’s
Health and Women’s Health and Surgery. As an academic medical center and
the University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore
has long supported a culture that thrives on creating visionary new approaches
that raise the level of care and expand the realm of the possible. This ongoing
commitment to moving medicine forward has continually helped Montefiore
attract and retain the most accomplished and visionary clinicians to lead and
staff its programs.
In addition, Montefiore Medical Center ranks among the top one percent of
all U.S. hospitals for investments in medical innovation and technology. These
investments allow Montefiore to consistently provide the most advanced,
efficient and effective care available anywhere.

been to build on our rich legacy and renowned
expertise by assembling an unparalleled team of
specialists who provide cutting-edge treatment
to our patients.” With a staff of highly respected

UNPACKING MEMORIES ALONG WITHDIPLOMAS IN RADIATION ONCOLOGY
When he was named chairman of Montefiore’s
Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Shalom
Kalnicki recalled his first trip to the Bronx.
In 1970, Dr. Kalnicki was studying medicine in
Sao Paulo, Brazil when his brother-in-law was
diagnosed with cancer and given less than six
months to live. As a first-year medical student,
Dr. Kalnicki traveled with his relative to see
Dr. Charles Botstein, father of radiation oncology
at Montefiore. Dr. Botstein’s work was so
impressive, says Dr. Kalnicki, “I immediately saw
that this was what I had to do, and I applied for
residency at Montefiore.”
Today, Dr. Kalnicki’s brother-in-law remains a
healthy cancer survivor. And throughout his
years at Montefiore, Dr. Kalnicki and his team
have followed Dr. Botstein’s inspiring example.
They have been instrumental in the development
of treatments that pinpoint tumors and spare
healthy tissue such as Intensity-Modulated
Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided
Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and Target Motion
Management (TMM). The results of these and
other advanced therapies are better outcomes in
treating all forms of cancer and a dramatic
reduction in side effects experienced by patients.
“Our job is to transform what is a disastrous
event in any patient’s life: a diagnosis of cancer,”
says Dr. Kalnicki. “We do our best to not only
treat the cancer, but to preserve quality of life,
and return healthy patients to society.”

The Montefiore-Einstein Cancer Center is
nationally renowned for outstanding
patient care and exceptionally skilled
physicians. The Center develops and adopts
the newest and most innovative methods to
research, diagnose and treat a full range of
cancers. As a result, 39 percent of all
patients with cancer in the Bronx, New
Rochelle, Yonkers and Mt. Vernon seek
treatment here. The Montefiore-Einstein
Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute
(NCI)-designated cancer center, one of only
three such distinguished centers in the New
York metropolitan area.
Research lies at the heart of all medical
progress, and for years, Montefiore Medical
Center has been a leader in developing and
exploring new cancer treatments and drug
therapies. The Division of Translational
Research in the Department of Oncology
focuses on “translating” laboratory findings
into practical applications that will help
patients to better fight cancer. The expertise
and experience of Montefiore in this area
regularly result in innovative strategies in
cancer treatment. Constant work toward
the development of new therapies means
more options for patients and better
chances for a successful outcome.

 Samuel Weinstein, MD
Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery
COMMITMENT THAT GOES BEYONDTHE ORDINARY
Dr. Samuel Weinstein, director of Pediatric
Cardiothoracic Surgery, specializes in
performing life-saving heart surgery on
children with congenital heart conditions.
For the children of the Bronx andWestchester
County to underprivileged children around
the globe, world-class care is delivered by
Dr.Weinstein and his team.
Upon his arrival at Montefiore in 2005,
Dr.Weinstein immediately attracted national
media attention by heading the team that
performed heart surgery on several Iraqi
children born with cardiac defects.
Dr.Weinstein and his team have also traveled
abroad to perform complicated heart surgery
in countries without that medical capability,
and to train local physicians to perform those
critical operations.
Dr.Weinstein’s passionate dedication to the
world’s children can best be seen in a recent
incident in El Salvador. While performing
heart surgery on an eight-year-old boy, Dr.
Weinstein momentarily scrubbed out to
donate his own rare blood type to the child.
Dr.Weinstein explains what drives him: “Our
goal is to maximize the skills of each specialist
in the Pediatric Heart Center so we can
minimize the impact of surgery on children.
Because, after all, they’re just kids.”

A Leader in Minimally-Invasive Robotic Surgery
The application of the groundbreaking
da Vinci® Surgical System is key to many of
the surgical advances at Montefiore. Using
this advanced technology, surgeons
manipulate small, precise instruments
through tiny incisions, while benefiting
from enhanced high definition, three-
dimensional vision. Minimally-invasive
robotic procedures provide the highest
degree of surgical precision while offering
the patient less pain, less scarring, a shorter
hospital stay and a faster recovery. Montefiore
surgeons are experts in minimally-invasive
and robotic surgery, and have led the way in
developing this promising field.

In general, childhood cancers are more aggressive
than adult cancers and treatment options need to
take a different course. Pediatric cancers are
frequently located in difficult-to-treat areas.
Also, when they are diagnosed, pediatric cancers
are often further advanced.
The Childhood Cancers and Blood Disorders
Program at The Children’s Hospital at
Montefiore offers a comprehensive range of
cancer treatment options in one location. A child
diagnosed with cancer, a solid tumor or a blood
disorder can be treated with the appropriate
therapy—chemotherapy, radiation or surgery—
a choice available at only a handful of medical
centers. And treatment doesn’t stop at the door.
When possible, the Childhood Cancers and
Blood Disorders Program tracks patients post-
treatment and provides follow-up services.

A CHILDREN’S HEALTH NETWORKEVOLVING BEYOND EXCELLENCE
As chairman and physician-in-chief of
The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore,
Dr. Philip Ozuah has a vision: to see
The Children’s Hospital as the center of a
world-class children’s health network.
To date, The Children’s Hospital serves as
the hub of a network of more than 25
community-based health centers that offer
primary, specialty and subspecialty care to
more than 46,000 children living in the
Bronx andWestchester County. “We are
demonstrating every day that we are making
substantial improvements in the lives of
children and their families,” Dr. Ozuah
states proudly.
The next step is developing and emphasizing
the hospital’s extraordinary staff and
state-of-the-art capabilities in pediatric
oncology, cardiothoracic medicine,
neurology, respiratory and sleep disorders, as
well as organ and stem cell transplantation.
The goal is to transform these areas into
Centers of Excellence on a national and
international scale.
While Dr. Ozuah has seen many changes
during his 17 years at Montefiore, he views
the most dramatic as, “its change from a
strong local presence into a name that’s
becoming known internationally for
excellent children’s medicine.”

MINIMIZING THE RISKS OFNEUROSURGERY
The risk of paralysis resulting from brain
surgery is too high for Dr. Rick Abbott.
“We can predict the risk of surgically-
inflicted paralysis with almost 100 percent
accuracy,” he states, “but our ultimate goal
is to lower that risk.” Since the mid-1990s,
Dr. Rick Abbott, a neurosurgeon at
Montefiore, has been working on doing
just that. He and a team of collaborators
from other institutions made significant
headway by developing the Intraoperative
Neurophysiological Monitoring (INM)
System that’s become a standard of care in
the field.
Especially useful during surgery on spinal
cord and brain stem tumors, the INM
system alerts surgeons when they’re too
close to nerves—and a single errant move
could result in severe damage or paralysis.
The benefit with INM is that surgeons can
be aggressive in removing tumors without
the fear of causing permanent damage.
With less tumor left behind, fewer patients
will need post-op chemo or radiation.
Less than ten systems like Montefiore’s exist
in North America and about a third of all
staff working with these systems were
trained at Montefiore. What’s more, the
level at which Montefiore is able to use this
incredible technology, in Dr.Abbott’s opinion,
“surpasses just about anyone else.”

Caring for a Community in Need
With some 1.4 million residents, the Bronx is America’s tenth largest
city. Unfortunately, it is also one of its poorest. And like many
inner-city communities, it wrestles with higher than average rates
of cancer, heart failure and obesity, as well as some of the nation’s
highest rates of HIV infection, AIDS, tuberculosis and substance
abuse. Nevertheless, this distressed community is Montefiore’s
home. Montefiore takes care of its own. A central theme of the
Montefiore mission is the promise to provide superior healthcare to
all, regardless of one’s ability to pay.
Addressing problems endemic to the underprivileged and uninsured
—lack of primary care, limited access to preventive medicine, and
illnesses not treated on a timely basis—Montefiore brings critical
services directly into distressed neighborhoods. At the heart of this
effort is a portfolio of community partnerships. Groundbreaking
outreach programs that were originated by Montefiore, such as the
world-renowned Lead Safe House, the nation’s first adolescent AIDS
program, and the Child Advocacy Center for combating child abuse
and neglect, have become models for similar programs in other
urban communities, here and abroad.
Through its passionate dedication to taking care of its community,
Montefiore has made preventive and specialized care easily accessible
to all and set a new standard for urban healthcare systems. One that
improves health, raises hope and enhances the quality of life for
everyone.

REDUCING CHILDHOOD OBESITY ANDMAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT
Under the direction of Dr. David Appel, the
Montefiore School Health Program has become
the largest school-based healthcare network in the
country.
The School Health Program collaborates with
primary care providers and community agencies to
identify and address unmet health needs of children
in this underserved urban setting. One major
initiative, the “Healthy Kids” obesity-prevention
program, brings healthy eating and physical fitness
programs to elementary classrooms and
communities. Its goal is to minimize the serious
long-term health consequences of obesity such as
diabetes and heart disease. Educators, school staff,
parents and neighborhoods work together to
establish physical activities, community produce
gardens, healthy cooking classes, snacks in schools
and food cooperatives. The program also has been
highly effective in recruiting parent volunteers to
lead Saturday parent programs to teach nutritious
cooking and child-friendly family fitness activities.
“Our goal is to create collaborative parent, school and
community partnerships that will ultimately result in
healthier lifestyles for children,” says Dr. Appel.

A COMMITMENT TO THEFUTURE GROWTH OF HEALTHCARE
Montefiore Medical Center remains fiscally sound, while it continues to
invest in serving both its passions: caring for the community and providing
world-class care. Montefiore’s advanced clinical information system is helping
to improve the quality of patient care while dramatically reducing the errors
that plague many healthcare centers. This system includes computerized
physician order entry and real-time decision support tools that allow healthcare
providers to make faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
Yet transforming healthcare demands a constant commitment to creating
more and better facilities, acquiring the most advanced technologies and
equipment, and developing innovative clinical and social programs.
The Campaign for Montefiore looks to you to help redefine the promise
of what healthcare can do. A successful effort will provide the support for
numerous capital investments including the construction of specially-
equipped pediatric surgical suites, a state-of-the-art Center for Radiation
Therapy and a total renovation of the neonatal floor at The Children’s Hospital
at Montefiore. In addition, the Campaign will ensure that Montefiore’s
physicians and caregivers are equipped with the latest diagnostic, surgical
and research technologies that will help them provide the highest quality
care today, and tomorrow.

Capital Needs for Achievable Dreams
The Asthma CenterWith one of the highest rates of asthma in
the United States, deaths from asthma in
Bronx County are approximately three times
the national average. It is estimated that
20 percent of children living in the Bronx
have asthma and that hospitalization rates are
21 times higher than in more affluent parts
of the city.
When construction of the Asthma Center is
completed, physicians will be able to treat
thousands of children faster and more
effectively, thanks to a central database of
pediatric patient files that incorporates
records from 21 Montefiore community
sites and 12 school-based sites.
The Pediatric Infusion SuiteThe Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is
creating a 400-square-foot Pediatric
Infusion Suite with 11 beds that will
provide young patients and their parents
with a quiet, private place in which to
receive cancer treatments. Outfitted with
state-of-the-art infusion equipment and a
dedicated nursing staff, this new area is
designed to improve medical care and to
offer child-friendly distractions from what
is often a traumatic and difficult experience.
The suite will be equipped with TVs and
electronic gaming devices, as well as
wardrobes for personal belongings.

The Neonatal FloorLabor and delivery is a specialty at Montefiore.
On average, Montefiore nurses and doctors
deliver and care for 4,900 babies each year.
There are five obstetrics practices on site,
nine state-of-the-art birthing suites and a
highly-advanced Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit. In addition, Montefiore is one of only
16 designated Regional Perinatal Centers in
New York State.
To care for the smallest patients and their
mothers, Montefiore is constructing a new
neonatal floor with 21 Neonatal Intensive
Care beds and a 27–bed Post Partum Unit
with the latest technology.
Stem Cell FacilityAs part of the comprehensive cancer services
available here, Montefiore is developing a 600-
square-foot, sterile, specially ventilated Stem
Cell Facility that will allow for the manipulation
of bone marrow for “unrelated” bone marrow
transplants. These are transplants for patients
being treated with bone marrow from a donor
who is not a sibling or parent. As a result,
Montefiore patients will no longer have to travel
great distances for treatment. The addition of
this facility will lay the groundwork for future
clinical research and studies.

The Clinical Looking Glass
Designed by Montefiore computer
technicians and physicians to aid in the
comparison of populations of patients with
similar diagnoses, this critical tool provides
real-time analysis of groups of patients
selected from close to 2 million patient
records. Now, physicians can identify
emerging trends, develop strategies to
effectively deal with potential health crises,
and diagnose and treat patients quickly and
more efficiently.
The Picture Archiving andCommunications System (PACS)This electronic system stores images, such as
X-rays and scans, and makes them available
for viewing by physicians virtually anytime,
anywhere. By equipping all sites with PACS,
Montefiore physicians can compare a recent
image to a benchmark made a year ago and
see changes instantly. As part of a patient’s
Electronic Medical Record, PACS images
hold the key to dramatic advances in
physician productivity, patient safety and
quality of care.
Where the Commitment Meets the Need
Montefiore is dedicated to expanding its Centers of Excellence in
order to provide advanced, family-centered healthcare in a nurturing
environment. The Campaign for Montefiore will bring a new
impetus to that effort.
To achieve the Campaign’s goals, Montefiore requires more
healthcare staff who share a passion for medical excellence. To attract
these professionals, Montefiore must commit to providing the
infrastructure, facilities, technology and equipment they need to
succeed. And, Montefiore must develop more programs that
translate this uncommon commitment into care for families,
children, the aging, and people of all races and ethnicities.
The Campaign for Montefiore will help create or enhance 68 new
and existing educational and support programs across areas of care
including:
 Pediatric Specialty Services
 Adult Medical and Surgical Specialties
 Faculty Endowment
Institute for Clinical and Translational Research
 Quality Improvement
 Services for Children at Risk
 Center for Aging and Independence
 Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities
 Responding to Public Health Crises
Extending the Reach and Capacity of Montefiore Physicians
Empowering Patients and Families Through Education
 Facility Expansion and Upgrade
 Community-based Cancer Treatment Centers
 Pioneering Health Information Technology
TREATING MORE THANTHE WHOLE PATIENT
When a child is seriously sick, the whole
family suffers through the waiting period for
a diagnosis. When Alison Heffer was 12 years
old, her parents, John and Barbara Heffer,
brought her to The Children’s Hospital at
Montefiore for some answers. Their worst
fears were confirmed when she was
diagnosed with both epilepsy and
hypoglycemia. But a team of endocrinologists
and neurologists helped the family navigate
the treatment process with compassion and
brilliant insight into both diseases.
“Everyone from the doctors to the nurses to
the Child Life specialists took time to explain
our options and the various treatments”, says
Mr. Heffer. “We couldn’t have received more
compassionate, understanding care.”
Although Alison is no longer a patient here,
her family is still deeply connected to the
hospital. John is a long-standing member of
Montefiore’s Board of Trustees and Barbara
sits on the Board of The Children’s Hospital.
“There is great medicine in the Bronx,” they
say proudly. And Alison was so inspired by her
experience at Montefiore, she has become a
Child Life specialist working in a major
metropolitan children’s hospital.
Information Technology
The Emerging Health Information Technology system now in use at Montefiore is
revolutionizing the way healthcare professionals deliver care. Since its implementation,
Montefiore has been able to remove the often-redundant steps following a physician’s
medication order and reduced errors by more than 70 percent. Other key technologies include:
“There is great medicine in the Bronx.”
