TheFriendsofCandlerParkandParkPrideareplanningtobuildanaturaltrailin the large ravinenear the corner ofMcLendonDrive andCallanCircle. Thetrailwillbeamulchedpathwithlandscapetimberstodefinethepathandhelpholdthemulchinplace.Thepathwillbecombinedwithanefforttoclearoutunderbrushandaddeducational signs regarding theplantsandothernaturalfeatures of the ravine. The available funds from the SweetWater 420 Fest,$4,250.00,arecurrently inanaccountheldbyParkPride.Thanks toall thosewhohelpedtosupportthisproject.Theravine largelyhasbeenaforgottenandunused(exceptby isolatedurbancampers)partofCandlerPark.Thegoalofcleaningandtrailbuildingistomaketheareamoreinvitingandencouragemoretraffictothearea.Trailsareamongthe most popular features in most parks, and the ravine provides a naturalexperiencemissingfromthemoredevelopedareasofthepark.SweetWater Brewery has graciously offered its staff for a workday to helpcompletethepath,aswellasPReffortstotrytoattractadditionalvolunteerstocompletethework.ThedatefortheworkdayisFriday,March18,2011.Wewillhaveadditionalvolunteerhelp fromthealways‐energeticOperationBootCamp.However,wecoulduse somehelp fromthecommunity.WewillmostlikelyhaveafollowupworkdayonSaturdaytocompletetheproject.The conceptmapbelow shows the locationof the ravine andproposed trail.For more information and details, go to www.friendsofcandlerpark.org, orfriendourgrouponFacebook.

It’s time to start planning the 4th annual Candler Park Easter Egg Hunt! Theworking date is April 23 at noon. Over the years, this event has grownincreasinglypopularwithourkidpopulation.Duetodemandwehavedecidedto grow the event to 2000 eggs! Kate Sandhaus has graciously offered herhome the night before the hunt at 7:30 pm for an Easter‐egg‐stuffing party.Permits,feesandpossibleuseofpoolhousebathroomswillbehandledbytheFriendsofCandlerPark.Weareaskingforupto$499.00infundingfromCPNO.Wewillneedabunnysuit($75‐$100)andtherestofthefundscanbeusedforEaster eggs and candy. Oneofthechallengeshasbeenthatwedon’tregularlyseerepresentationfrom Councilmember Wan’s office at our Candler Park NeighborhoodOrganizationmeetingsorourNPU‐Nmeetings.This isbecauseofatimingconflictsincefullCityCouncilmeetingsandNPU‐Fmeetings(otherareasherepresents) are also meeting at the same times. I encouragedCouncilmemberWantoconsidersendingsomesortofrepresentationfromhis office to attend these meetings so we can hear more from him. Heagreed that this along withmore frequent communication was a priorityand something he would consider for 2011. AlexWan,continuedfrompage2 We spent quite a bit a time discussing public safetyand the role of both the Atlanta Police Departmentand active citizens in our neighborhood.Councilmember Wan regularly meets with ChiefGeorge Turner to share the concerns of his districtand has been pushing for less governmentwaste toturn into more dollars to hire additional policeofficers.I encouraged Councilmember Wan to viewneighborhood leaders as community resources aswell.Therearemanyactiveindividualsinourdistrictwhohavedoneatremendousjobingettingthewordoutaboutpublicsafety,andweshouldworktogetherto share resources and ideas. As a result of mysuggestion, CouncilmemberWan hosted a District 6Public Safety Meeting on December 14 inviting thesafety chairs and presidents of neighborhoods toattendandlearnmorefromeachotherandtospeakdirectly with Chief Turner as well. Both ChristieKuropatwa (CPNO safety chair) and Jay Sandhaus(CPNOpresident)attendedthismeetingandmetwithotherneighborhoodrepresentatives.Iwill continue to stay in touchwith CouncilmemberWan,andIencourageCandlerParkresidentstosharetheir ideas and concerns with him and his helpfulstaffsupport,SheilaParrott,aswellat404‐330‐[email protected]@atlantaga.gov.

FriendsofCandlerPark:TheWaronPrivet
ByMarkClement,CPNOSpecialProjectsOfficerChinese privet was introduced to the US fromChina in 1852 but it quickly spread beyondanyone’s control.Privet has now rocketed pastKudzu as Georgia’s worst invasive weed. Privetcan produce single species communities bydisplacing and killing native wildflowers, treesand shrubs. Privet is also the leading cause ofglobalwarming.(Ok,Imadethatlastpartup.)Asyou are probably aware Candler Park has it’sshareofthispeskyweed.As a part of park clean ups and mulching theFriendsofCandlerParkwillbetakingaimattheprivetproblem. Lastmonth volunteers from thecommunity and the Boys and Girls Club of EastAtlantaremovedPrivet fromthehilladjacent tothe pool house. Sweetwater420Fest,April15‐17SmallChanges,BigDifferences
ByJenniferBensch,SweetWater420FestEventPromoterIt’salmostAprilandthatmeanstheSweetwater420FestiscomingbacktoCandlerPark!The festivalhasbeenabigsuccess in thepastandhasgrown in size each year.This year, Sweetwater is proposing somechanges thatwill reflect thisgrowth.Thegoal is toenhancethepatronandcommunityexperienceandtomaintainsafetyforall.SmallChanges:1)ThefestivalhasaskedtobeabletoopentheirdoorsonFridayevening,startingat4:20andendingat10pm.2) On the permit application the event is asking to begin setup onMonday.Thisis2dayspriortolastyear’srequest.Thisisonlytobeabletogainaccesstotheparktobeginthestagingofequipmentandtrucks.ThemajorsetupwillbeginWedandbefinalizedThursday.TheyhopetohaveeverythingremovedfromtheparkbyMondayevening4/18/2011.TheirpermitaskstobeabletostayuntilTuesdayjustincasethereareafewpiecesofequipmentthathaveyettoberemoved.3)Therewillbeastageontheoutskirtsofthesoccerfieldinthecornernearestthenumber2teeboxofTheCandlerParkGolfCourse.Theywillbeusingrola‐tracktoloadinandloadoutallequipmentonthefield.Therola‐trackhasspecialholes in it toallowaeration.Thiswillpreservethegrassandfield.4)During theactual festivaleventdays the sidewalkentrancenear thenumber2 teeboxwill notbeutilizedexceptby festival staff andCPNOrunners.Therearesmallmotorizedcartstransportingfestivalequipmentandgoodsonthispathway.Closingittoeventstaffonlywillensurethesafety of all patrons and area residents. CPNOPresident Jay Sandhaus welcomed approximately 35membersandgueststothemeeting.Amotiontoadopttheagendawasapprovedbyashowofhands.Jaynoteda new procedure for CPNO meetings ‐ from this pointforward,visitorsandCPNOofficerswill summarizenon‐actionable items in writing; these summaries will beprovidedat theendof theprintedagendaand includedinthemeetingnotes.Onlyactionableitems(requiringavoteorspecificactionfromCPNO)willbebroughttothefloor.2. Report from Atlanta Police Departmentrepresentativeandotherpublicofficials. MajorDaltonadvised residents that he is aware of neighborhoodconcernsabouta robbery that tookplaceonMcLendonAvenue. Concerns about the way the robbery washandled by the Atlanta Police Department werechronicled in an Atlanta Journal Constitution article.Major Dalton said the police should have done better,although he thinks the situationwas not as bad as theAJC portrayed it. He said the casemight be difficult tosolve because the victims cannot identify theperpetrators, but that an excellent detective has beenassignedandisdoingallhecan.MajorDaltonnotedthatoverall crime continues to be down by 50% in theneighborhood over the same period last year. He hasreceived the go‐ahead to put 12 new officers in place;theywillstartonFriday.PerCityCouncilregulations,theofficers must spend their first 12 weeks walking beats;theywillbeassignedtoVAHighlands,Little5Points,theEdgewood Shopping Center and East Atlanta. Inresponse to a neighbor’s concern that the policestatisticsdonotrepresentthetruelevelsofcrimeintheneighborhood, as calculated by the number of crimesreported in the Messenger, it was noted that thediscrepancy is due to the fact that theMessenger alsoreports serious crimes in neighboring areas such asInmanParkandLakeClaire.3.AnnouncementsVisitors• Anne Dennington, Flux ‐‐ [email protected] .Please see written summary, page 2. The Little Five Points Community Center's (L5PCC)long term goal to increase accessibility for allmembersofthecommunityhasfinallybeenrealized.After sixmonths of construction, we are pleased toannounce that the elevator is nearing completion.The new elevator and related work provides fordesignatedparking,anaccessible route to theentryand an elevator serving three floors of the center.FOSCO provided construction servicesand managedto work around holiday and building residentconstraintsundaunted.Fundraising for the project was provided by aCommunity Development Block Grant administeredby the City of Atlanta, Department of Parks,RecreationandCulturalAffairs.
