THE CANOPY BOARD OF MANAGEMENT, STAFF AND
VOLUNTEERS WISH YOU A SAFE, HAPPY AND HEALTHY
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR.
We are fortunate at the Centre to have many volunteers
assis ng with all aspects of opera ons. We recently said
farewell to Jenny Bridge, a valued part of the team at the
Centre for over 2 years. Jenny was a wonderful ‘all‐rounder’
assis ng with most aspects of the Centre’s opera ons.
Her commitment, enthusiasm and sense of humour will be
hugely missed. We wish Jenny and her son Deo all the best
as they start their new adventure in Queensland. As a
volunteer you don’t only get the chance to give back into
the community but also have the opportunity to learn, build
your professional experience and work as team in a
suppor ve environment. For more details about volunteering
at Cameron Park community Centre please phone Anna on

NOV 2014 - JAN 2015
Is there such a thing as a "best age"
to learn how to draw cartoons?
Cartooning is more about ideas than
drawing skill, so there's no such thing
as a "best age" in cartooning.
However, the earlier you start and the
more you do it then the be er you
become.
What advice would you have for a
young person wan ng to try
cartooning?
Just do it. Test your ideas on others
because everybody's sense of humour
is different and that will help you
refine your concepts. Develop a thick
skin because not everybody is
going to like what you do. Think of
cartooning as professional play and
always keep a sense of fun in what
you do.
Besides cartooning, what other
interests/hobbies do you have?
I have lots of dreams and ideas.
It's hard to find the me to follow
them all up. My present hobby project
is the "Mechanical Fish Tank" that will
be completed in a steampunk style,
hopefully by the end of next year
Do you ever get "cartoonist block" ?
"Crea ve block" is an ever‐present
problem for cartoonists. Humour is a
mysterious art, even to people like me
who prac ce it every day, and there
are plenty of mes when inspira on is
missing in ac on. Talking to journalists
about their stories o en helps the
process. I some mes leave the Herald
and have a drink in one of the local
coffee shops or just simply go for a
walk, all while keeping a notepad
handy.
Do you have any personal social
jus ce issues that you're par cularly
passionate about?
The Newcastle Herald has fought
many ba les on behalf of those facing
injus ce, the most notable being the
reports by Joanne McCarthy on child
abuse by clergy that led to the Royal
Commission. I produced several
serious cartoons on this issue.
What do you love about living in this
area? Considering it is s ll very much
a developing area, what progress are
you looking forward to?
Cameron Park is a major growth area
as Newcastle spreads steadily
westward. I'd like to see public
transport going more directly from
here to the city because it presently
takes at least an hour in both
direc ons. The Very Fast Train will
eventually run down the east coast
and Newcastle's sta on will be built in
Cameron Park, so it would be great to
see that go ahead ‐ though that's
unlikely to happen in my life me.
Peter Lewis is available for live
caricature sessions for your event,
conference or mee ng and can be
contacted through his website:
www.livecaricatures.com.au
AN INTERVIEW WITH PETER LEWIS
We are very fortunate to have
Peter Lewis, one of Australia’s leading
live portrait and caricature ar sts and
cartoonist from the Newcastle Herald
living in our community. Besides his
excep onal talent at expressing a
range of global and local issues in
cartoon form, Peter is renowned for
his generosity and community spirit .
We caught up with him recently to
find out a li le more about the man
behind the cartoons.
Who taught you to draw cartoons
and how did they inspire you?
Like most cartoonists I'm largely
self‐taught and drew inspira on from
the era I grew up in. While Les
Lumsden was an influence because I
saw his cartoons in the paper every
day, Mad Magazine's ar sts had an
edgy humour which was more
appealing to my youthful cynicism.
What did your parents think when
you told them you were going to be a
cartoonist?
I was always scribbling cartoons as a
child. My mother, a school‐teacher at
New Lambton Primary, would bring
home half‐used exercise books and I'd
fill them with drawings. I was a fine
ar st for several years a er
gradua ng from art school and didn't
become a professional cartoonist un l
I was 32 when I started working at the
Herald.

A fitness boot camp is a type of group physical training program conducted by
personal trainers or former military personnel. These programs are designed to
build strength and fitness through a variety of intense group intervals and fit‐
ness games over a 1 hour period of me. Bootcamp challenges every muscle in
your body and with
li le rest in
between each set;
you're bound to
feel the burn and
intensity. By
constantly moving for an hour, your body has no me to rest,
therefore you’re burning hundreds of calories, even when you
stop. It's a way to challenge your body and mind into doing a
workout, which leaves no prisoners. Benefits include, weight
loss, a be er cardio vascular system, muscle endurance, and
also proven to beat depression.
We do team challenges, partner challenges, fitness games and
also can train as an individual. Most sessions are never the
same so it tricks the body into burning more calories.
Bootcamp is for any age and fitness level as you have to beat
your mind and push yourself past that point that you think
you are going to stop at. Bea ng the mind and pushing your
body is what the challenge is.
Bootcamp is on at Cameron Park on Mondays, and Holmes‐
ville on Tuesday, Thursdays or Saturdays. Michael has a spe‐
cial offer at the moment, if you click like on his facebook page
you will receive your first session half price.

When money is ght, food is o en
one expense that can be reduced.
Here is a brief guide to how you
can make the most of foods you
may already have or can buy for
very li le money:
Step 1: Stock Take :Make a list of everything (including
sauces and unusual canned items) in the pantry, fridge and
freezer. This way you know exactly what you have and you
may discover food you didn’t know you had.
Step 2: Reduce Waste: If there are foods in the fridge close to the use‐by date, use them first or freeze them to use later.
Make sure you wrap or cover it well to prevent it spoiling. Chop up fruit and vegetables before freezing.
Step 3: Plan your meals: Make a note of what meals and snacks you need for each person un l pay day. Start to fill this in
with foods you already have. It is important to think crea vely, you probably won’t have your normal snack foods
available. Consider bread, fruit and vegetables as snacks and consider vegetarian meals.
Step 4: Shop for basics: Use what spare change you do have to buy some well‐planned staple foods. The table above can
be used for various meals and are filling.
