From the Pastor… Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus
July brings us hot weather and the search for some rest and relaxation. For St. Augustine, it also brings us the new opportunity to move into The Gathering Inn’s regular schedule of churches who host the
rotating shelter for our homeless brothers and sisters. Yes, we have had two chances already, but now we are on the master schedule: the second Wednesday of each month.
Jim Quinney will be recruiting groups to step up and act as primary hosts each month, planning and
preparing a dinner and doing the set up and the clean up. I hope that many of you will take part over the months, whether as a pair of helping hands, or making donations to purchase the food (and multiple
gallons of milk!) needed for the dinners.
We are the hands and feet of Christ. We have these chances to serve. Maybe it pushes us a little out of our comfort zone. It isn’t easy to see families with young children coming to receive a meal and sleep on our floor. It isn’t easy to see the men and women who might easily be our actual brother or sister or son
or daughter.
But we must step out where Jesus leads us. There are many chances for us to serve. Let’s look around and see what they might be...and then, let’s join hands and step out together to be servants.
God’s peace,
Pastor Liz+

Service Times
The Gathering Inn
8 a.m. Sunday Service
The early service begins at 8 a.m. This is a simple communion service without music, using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship.
10 a.m. Sunday Service
The second service, at 10 a.m., is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., excepting some Holy days and special occasions.

Hosting Ministry
We are making preparations to host 65 overnight guests , Wednesday, July 9 and every second Wednesday for the remainder of the year. This is one of the most rewarding things you can do. I really hope everyone will get involved to some degree.
Volunteers are needed for food preparation, serving, dining and room set up and greeters. There will be sign-up sheets for this ministry for each month at the outreach display in Canterbury Hall.
We stepped up to this ministry on faith mid-year and the financial obligation is not part of our budget. We are asking for small contributions to help make up the difference.
St. Augustine volunteers serve 65 men, women and children barrel-cooked chicken, baked potatoes, green salad, dessert and about six gallons of milk...all for $200. The guests are so grateful for a hot meal and a comfortable place to lay their heads.
Many thanks,
Jim Quinney
Hey! What is That Grocery Cart Doing in
the Back of the Church?
That’s where you place your food items for the Pantry and Dining Room Ministry at St. Vincent de Paul. We need cans of veggies, mac n cheese and other non-perishable food items. Also, please bring toiletry items and adult size jeans for The Gathering Inn. And we remember that hunger and homelessness do not take a summer break in Placer County.

July 2014
The missio Team has been discerning and praying on our path forward, individually and collectively, as we reach the end of our two-year term. This verse from Matthew resonates with me as I endeavor to understand my call to mission.
Matthew 25:37—39...Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?
My prayers to understand how to serve were answered with invitations to the Kaiser Hospital ministry led by Pierce Leavell, and the Kairos prison ministry event coming in the fall, from Jack Dillon. In addition, we have all been invited to the outreach events led by Jim Quinney and Lana Gartin has established the Welcoming Team.
I’m in awe of how God answers prayer. How can it get any more direct than with these ministries? If the hospital or prison ministries resonate with you, reach out to either Pierce, Jack or me to learn more. And of course, Jim Quinney and Lana are ready to help you engage in other outreach and welcoming opportunities.
The missio Team has events in the planning stages as well. They include women’s, men’s and possibly collective retreats. We are discussing some small group study possibilities. We will keep you posted as these grace-filled answers to prayer unfold.
Blessings,
Steve Mershon

Journey of a seminarian...
A Celebration!
I cannot believe that this day has actually happened! On Saturday, June 28, I was ordained to the transitional diaconate at Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. Four of us were ordained by Bishop Barry Beisner. It was a beautiful service. And it has been a grand opportunity to spend time with family and friends. My godparents from Jacksonville, Florida, and my sister, Katie, from Myrtle Beach, came to be presenters for me. And clergy from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco came as well to offer support.
During this next year, I will serve as a deacon, assisting in sacraments and focusing on outreach at St. John’s Roseville. At the same time, I will complete my third year of seminary, commuting back and forth from Roseville to Berkeley. Following my graduation from seminary next spring, I will be ordained to the priesthood and begin working where God wills.
Thank you again for your support through love and prayers and your gift of my beautiful vestments.
See you at the Community BBQ, if not sooner.
Deacon Sarah
And another celebration!
On Sunday, June 29, our newly ordained Deacon Sarah helped to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kathleen and John Quigley. Deacon Sarah assisted at the altar and also sang a solo as a special gift to Kathleen and John. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate two important sacraments in the Episcopal Church - ordination and marriage.

DOK
Daughters of the King will meet Sunday, July 13, following the 10 a.m. service.
The Daughters will begin making plans to host the Fall Assembly. On Saturday, November 1, DOK chapters from around the Diocese will gather at St. Augustine for a day of reflection, sharing and prayer.
The Daughters will be hosting the next Gathering Inn event Wednesday, July 9.
If you have questions regarding Daughters of the King, please contact Deidre Shonk, who is our new president. We thank Robin Williams, who has stepped down after serving two years in this position.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
For many years, shawls have symbolized comfort, peace, warmth and serenity. The modern Prayer Shawl Ministry, which began in 1998 as a grass-roots movement, quickly grew into a world-wide ecumenical endeavor. Numerous shawls are given to grateful recipients all over the world.
We at St. Augustine feel privileged to be a part of this movement and enjoy our time of fellowship, when we meet the second Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the Sunday School room.
There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. Contact Greer Nave, if you are interested.
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall, the second Sunday of each month. Coffee and breakfast are served. All men and boys are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Brotherhood raised $600 for the Haiti Mission Team/Living Water International project at the June 8 BBQ. Thanks to all for their help and support.
At last month’s meeting, Dr. Linda Williams, Financial Aid Program Manager at Sierra College, spoke to the group about the support provided by the college to former foster youth. The college assists 150 youth each year to attain their academic goals. St. Augustine contributed to this program with the Christmas offering.
The Brotherhood is considering starting a Junior Chapter. Boys ages 7 - 18 would be eligible to participate. Members of the Brotherhood would participate as mentors to the boys, regarding Church functions and activities. Hopefully, we will be able to start the program in September, pending the resolution of logistical items with National Headquarters.
Rob Shonk is the Brotherhood Director. It you are interested in learning more about the group, please contact Rob or Vice Director John Redmond.
The next meeting will be Saturday, July 13 at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall.

MMCA VolunteersThe Maria Montessori Charter School is on summer break. Several members from St. Augustine volunteered many hours working with the children during the past year.
There are many opportunities for more volunteering this fall, when school starts up again. If you are interested, please contact Carole Geiger or Rhonda Wampler.
Summer Sunday School at St. Augustine

We learned that God is our Creator, Provider, Protector, Savior and King. God created an amazing world for us. The story about Elijah showed us how God provides. Daniel, facing the den of lions, taught us that God is our protector. We also learned that God sent Jesus as our Savior and that God is our King in Heaven.
These lessons showed us that service to our family, friends, community and the world is one way that we can serve God. Each day Miss Carole (Peterson) and Miss Kathleen (Quigley) helped us with a special service project. We collected canned goods for St. Vincent de Paul and brought socks for homeless children. We also (adults included) contributed the number of pennies for our age to Living Water International to help build wells ($15 total) and we donated toys for needy children.
Lessons We Learned
Madison Lovin and Nicholas Rush entertained the children with a puppet show each day, featuring Max the Bear and Samantha the Monkey.

Our VBS Classes
Miss Gaby (Sisk) and Miss Kara (Diaz) captivated our youngest group, the
Turtles, with each Bible story. Mr. Rob (Shonk) and Mr. Jim (Tilton) used
videos to illustrate the Bible stories and promote discussions for the
Monkeys and the Toucans. The Cheetahs, led by Miss Barbara (Woolman)
crated wonderful murals for each lesson.

Activities
Miss Amy (Quinney) taught us new songs with fun motions and led us in some of our old favorites. We made drums, maracas, crocodile clackers and air guitars with Miss Kristie (Fischer). Miss Kathy (Dillon) showed us how to create things with food, make jungle trail mix, empty tomb biscuits and pizza kings. Miss Carole (Geiger) helped us run off energy with races, balloons, bubbles, water play and tons of other fun games. We looked so funny stuffing balloons in oversize pj bottoms.
Special THANKS go to our super classroom helpers, Chris Deering, Tessa Hesse, Martha Kennedy, Sharon Mershon, Carole Peterson, Janice Stenzel and Beth Sulc.
Our wonderful youth volunteers helped with snacks, crafts and games. Sydney Ebert, Kalie Geiger, Madison Lovin, David Marquez, Nicholas Rush, Dominic Shank, Olivia Shank and Kyle Sisk were super helpers.
We also want to say a big huge THANKS to all of the volunteers who helped with the decorations - cutting and pasting, set-up and take-down.
And special thanks to Susan Lampton, Director of VBS 2014. Congratulations on a job well done!

Did you know… The Nor Cal Walks for Water Walk-a-Thon and the Haiti Mission trip are two different events. However, both events support Living Water International. It is a little confusing - hopefully we can clarify.
In November, we have four St. Augustine members going to Haiti to drill a well as part of the Living Water International project. Several events over the next five months will raise funds to support our local team on the Haiti trip.
We are also helping to raise money for other well projects by hosting the Nor Cal Walks for Water event on September 20. This is also part of the Living Water International ministry.
Living Water Haiti Mission Trip
The November trip to Haiti will support the Living Water International ministry. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide a water well for those in need and to demonstrate our love by standing and working beside our Haitian friends in Christ.
Jack Dillon, Rick Lovin, Ken Cichocki and Jim Quinney will be going to Haiti November 29 - December 6, with a group from St. John’s Roseville.
There will be several opportunities to help support this group financially. Please be generous as we will all drill this well together in the name of Christ!

Soul Nutrition ! I would like to share some thoughts from Eknath Easwaran’s Thought for the Day that appeared recently. Eknath was the founder of the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in Tomales, California. Daily meditations are available on their website. Easwaran based this writing on the words of Mother Teresa of Calcutta: “There is hunger for ordinary bread, and there is hunger for love, for kindness, for thoughtfulness; and this is the great poverty that makes people suffer so much!” Easwaran goes on to say that “more and more evidence indicates that lack of love not only leads to loneliness, despair, and resentment, but also contributes to the deterioration of physical health.” When spiritual figures like Mother Teresa talk about our need to love and to be loved, the need is not metaphorical. She is not talking about some vague spirituality; she is talking about good nutrition. Resentment, hostility, alienation and selfishness are deficiency diseases. You can have all the essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals known, but if you cannot give and receive love, you are not likely to remain in good health. These are simple but profound words to ponder as you move through your day. It is likely that the most unlovable person crossing your path today is malnourished. Can you reach out to offer that desperately needed quotient . . . called love? July blessings, dear friends!
