Someone once asked me “what does it mean to be a Hispanic student.” Of course I didn't answer at the time be-

cause I was busy as I always am. However, I think I now have an answer for that random person. To me a Hispanic

student is one that is determined to improve his/herself, to become someone that makes his or her parents proud.

That sounds like the general term for what a student should be, but to Hispanic families, success for one equals

success for all. Coming from a Hispanic background I can definitely say that family is most important to Hispanics.

Family defines you, your background, culture, religion, etc.… Hispanics are usually deemed as people who love to

party, but that’s definitively not true. A Hispanic person is expected to be a hardworking individual that raises the

bar and does the best that he or she can in all of his or her work. If not, then they know what will happen when they

get home. This mantra of hard work among the Hispanic community deserves respect and deserves to be honored

because it is our heritage, Hispanics work hard whether they're studying, working, and, of course, partying.

At our La Salle Academy assembly last week we celebrated Hispanic culture. Mr. Torres organized the assembly and

students recognized Hispanic culture from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Spain, etc.. The students also watched

a small clip on typical Hispanic culture. Two dynamic speakers joined us that Wednesday morning to discuss what it

means to be a Hispanic in the world and how we can be leaders in society. Next we were blessed by Mr. Bless’ Salsa

Band which played many popular songs. One was so popular and liked that even Mr. Polanco of all people stood up

and danced, something that no one expected to happen. Overall we immensely enjoyed an assembly that celebrated

Hispanic culture.

I saw Pope Francis on 5th avenue on Thursday, then on Friday I was lucky enough to receive a ticket

to see Pope Francis celebrating Mass at Madison Square Garden. I wanted to attend the Mass because,

you don’t often get the opportunity to see the pope. As Pope Francis passed on 5th avenue, the specta-

tors cheered for him. In Madison Square Garden everybody stood up and also cheered. The reason

that I believe people turned out in such large numbers to see Pope Francis is because the Pope has

touched and impressed people by his words. The enthusiasm is there almost every time the Pope vis-

its. He creates interest because, of the number of things he has said, such as his concern about the

problems happening around the world.

I also saw Pope Francis on TV, when he was at the 9/11 memorial and museum. I also saw him giv-

ing the speech in the United Nations. I enjoyed the Madison Square Garden mass the most since it

was indoors and I felt much closer to him. If I had the opportunity to speak with Pope Francis I would

have asked for his prayers and to keep on helping people. We need his help for all the struggles people

experience daily, The Pope is in a very difficult position and he always asks for our prayers to help

him, because we have to remember the

Pope is also a man. The three words

that best describe Pope Francis are,

charismatic, open to others, and caring.

By: Jorge Ramirez

September 2015, Pope Francis visited United States

and thousands upon thousands of people gathered to

watch and feel his presence. I was fortunate to interview Ms. Conroy on her experience on Pope Francis’s visit. I first wanted

to hear from Ms. Conroy why Pope Francis is loved and respected around the world. Ms. Conroy said this was ”due to his wel-

coming nature and love for everyone around the world.” I asked Ms. Conroy where she saw the Pope and why she wanted to be

there. She stated” I saw him at Madison Square Garden and I

wanted to be there because it was a once in a lifetime expe-

rience to be so close to the Pope.” Ms. Conroy and I also

spoke about the response of the crowd when they saw Pope

Francis and why she felt he creates so much excitement.

She mentioned that there was,” an instant eruption of joyful

cheering and applauding”. “The excitement was due to the

people recognizing the Pope’s spirit and his role in the Cath-

olic Church.”

During my discussion with Ms. Conroy I asked her about her

impressions of Pope Francis and if she had the opportunity to speak to Pope Francis what would she ask him? She responded,”

I felt incredibly blessed to be in the presence of such an important figure in the Catholic Church.” Ms. Conroy then proceeded

to say,” if she had the opportunity to speak to the Pope, I would ask him what he thinks of the United States and his impres-

sion?”. “Also, did he ever think that he was going to be the Pope when he was younger?” I thought this was a very interesting

question that actually made me think whether he ever had a plan to become the Pope? Nearing the end of our talk about Pope

Francis’ visit, I asked Ms.Conroy, if she had seen any other of the Pope's Masses on T.V. Ms. Conroy announced that she saw the

Masses at St. Patrick's Cathedral and Philadelphia. Ms. Conroy’s favorite mass was the one at Madison Square Garden that she

attended.

At the end of our conversation I asked Ms. Conroy about her personal opinion of the Pope and what three words best describe

Pope Francis? She answered thoughtfully,” humble, welcoming and inspiring.” I am in agreement with Ms. Conroy’s description

of Pope Francis. My final question to Ms. Conroy was, given your experience of the day with Pope Francis, what message do you

bring to Lasallian students? She paused in thought for a moment and declared, I would tell all Lasallian students to see Christ

in everyone around them just as the Pope does.” By: Seth A. Pereles

Campus Ministry

The Campus Ministry group consists of young individuals who come together to

serve and share their faith with each other. Our focus is to create opportunities for com-

munity service and to bring our brothers and sisters closer to Christ. As a ministry we

participate in many faith sharing and Bible study sessions and we welcome new mem-

bers who may wish to strengthen their faith in God.

Our campus minister is Mr. Stewart who previously taught religion to all the seniors.

He misses seeing the seniors every day as a class because he remembers talking in

depth with them about their spirituality and the current social issues. As a campus min-

ister, however, he believes that he will have a greater impact on students’ lives as his

mission is explain to them the importance of service to the community. Mr. Stewart is

also able to witness first-hand students’ positive change after they have given service.

The current members of the Campus Ministry are: Brian Gil, Justin Lind, Jorge

Ramirez, Ian Lucero, Mark Bermeo, Estaban Zamot, and Matthew Perez. If you think

that the goals and the objectives of the Campus Ministry are your passion, please have

no hesitation by having a small conversation with Mr. Stewart or any other member of

the group. Matthew Perez

Halloween, is probably the best time of year for

movie lovers. Not only is it an opportunity to

see tons of new horror movies, but it is also a

chance to see classic movies and see what

scared you as a kid. Friday the 13th

Perhaps the most well-known horror movie, as

well as one of the first slasher films, Friday the

13th is a must see for any horror movie marathon.

After a mysterious drowning in 1957, Crystal

Lake is terrorized by a crazy hockey masked as-

sailant. When a group of teens go to the

campgrounds where the drowning occurred twen-

ty-one years later, they are viciously killed one by

one. This movie originally came out on May 9,

1980.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

In the final installment of this modern thrill-

er series, a family of four is once again

haunted by strange paranormal activity after

moving to their new home in California. Af-

ter the patriarch of the family discovers that

whatever is haunting them is after his six

year old daughter, he struggles to find a way

to protect her before it’s too late. This

comes out in theaters on October 23, 2015.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

From the twisted mind of director, Wes Craven, comes this classic about a “man” named Freddy Kruger.

He has the power to kill people in their dreams, then they are killed in real life. After several teenagers in

a small town are killed by this mysterious being, their friends come together to try and solve the dark

mystery of why they are being haunted. This movie originally came out on November 9, 1988.

The Babadook

Considered to be a horror modern classic,

this movie is about a widow trying to raise her

child after the death of her husband. After read-

ing him a children’s story called “The Baba-

dook”, the mother and son find themselves

haunted by the demonic creature from the book,

and try desperately to rid themselves of this evil.

This movie originally came out on January 17,

2014.

Crimson Peak

From the morbid mind of Guillermo Del Toro

comes this new movie about a young woman

who moves into her new husband’s home. Tak-

ing place in the late 19th century, Edith Cushing

is shocked to discover that her seemingly per-

fect husband has a dark secret lurking in his

home. As she tries to learn the truth, several

paranormal forces try to stop her. Look for this

movie in theaters and IMAX from October 16,

2015

NBA 2K16 hit late September, and revolutionized video basketball games as we know it. To be honest, I don’t think

the series can get any bigger than this! Your player starts off in High School and finally get drafted to the NBA.

This game takes your abilities as a bas-

ketball player on and off the court by

letting you meet with players, celebri-

ties and team owners on your off days

in your private gym. The defense has

improved a lot, making it harder to

score, giving the game a more realistic

basketball experience. The storyline is

emotional; following the life of your

player “Frequency Vibrations” or

“Freq” (Don’t worry, you can change the trash of a nickname in your second season) and the decision to cut off

his troublemaking best friend, or keep him around, which ruins your career. Game modes like My GM (My Game

Manager) makes you fully customize the team’s jerseys and relocate the team’s location. For example, I moved

the Cleveland Cavaliers to Alaska and then left the team because I hate them. The My Parks have new courts, and

you can play a 5 on 5 called “Pro-Am”, where you can make your own team and basketball court. The only prob-

lems with this game are that it is too story-orientated, and the game’s shooting mechanics are horrible. The

game gets 8.5 out of 10 for me.

My opinion on the Black

Ops 3 Beta: “It’s decent.”

The game is worth buying if

you are a Call of Duty fan or

just have nothing else to

play, but that’s about it. It’s a

beta, but so far the problem

with the game is that there

are TOO many overpowered

weapons and killstreaks. You cannot see underwater, and several times, some-

one would camp in the water. The game, however, moves fluidly and like Black

Ops 2, you won’t find people air thrusting like in Advanced Warfare. You can

see people running on walls. Expect to also see robots, invisible people and

holograms. These features make the game more competitive, but it can be frus-

trating. However, it’s just a beta with signs for improvement. The game does

have the potential to be a good Call of Duty game!
