We have been given the opportunity to give back to God a percentage of what he has blessed us with. To all those who have followed the biblical and Episcopal standard of giving of 10%, the vestry and I give you our heartfelt thanks. When you establish a tithe, you are saying, yes! Lord, I want to be in partnership with you. Your tithe is our human way of making a covenant with God, a tangible covenant with our heavenly Father. God has given us so much in his covenant through the years. With Abraham it was a promise, then it was the blood of the lamb, and finally the new covenant, the blood of Jesus. Yes, God has given us a blood covenant, which is a firm covenant (like blood brothers), and he did this with his own Son. Who of us would give so much, to give us eternal life? Who of us would give our own child to save a bunch of sinning ungrate- ful people such as us? Do we always put the Lord first? Have we all accepted Jesus as our savior? Have we all asked for forgiveness and repented of it? How many of us have always put our Heavenly Father above all, family, friend, work, and play? That is a great deal to ask from anyone. Yet God held us most high when he gave his son for us... no ifs, ands or buts. He saw what needed to be done to save his people, and out of great love he did it. After we all meditate on this, what a small thing giving a tithe to our Lord seems. However, it is a way to say "Yes, Lord, here I am. I accept Jesus as my savior, and I put God above all! What a wonderful gift, and the best part is that it is free. What is a mere 10% compared with what our Heavenly Father has done for us. How can we say we are good stew- ards if we cannot give with a joyful and happy heart? I wonder when it came time for the sacrifice of His only Son if God stopped and said, "Well, I don't know if I want to give all." No, he was fully committed and gave His only begotten son for us. Isn't a tithe a tiny thing compared to forgiveness of sins, healing, prosperity, life in abundance, and love for all time! What is a mere tithe compared to all He has given us. How many of us would do that, so loving, caring, faithful, and always with a happy heart. My friends, your tithe is much needed to keep his house in good shape. It is not enough to say, "Oh I will donate some time to the Lord." Yes, your time is precious to you and to the Church. However, how is donated time going to keep the Lord's house open, in good repair, and running? Just like at home, it costs to keep our buildings in good repair and do the ministry we have been called to do in the Three Village com- munity. We need to know how much the Lord has put on your heart to tithe. Budgets need to be made so that the Church can plan for the coming year. Will we have enough to pay utilities, grounds keeping, supplies, salaries, outreach, to keep educating our youth in what a wonderful friend, counselor, and partner we have in our Lord? That is why your pledge to support Caroline Church in the year 2019 is so important. Many thanks to all who have already done so and an anticipatory note of gratitude to those who will be doing so in the coming weeks. Our Lord will never leave us or forsake us; this is a promise from Him. It is a promise we can count on daily. You never again should feel lonely, shut out, unworthy, ashamed. He is here with us through Jesus our intercessor and the Holy Spirit for our guidance and protection. He has left us well protected. Your 10% or somewhat less, pledges of support, is so im- portant. Our ingathering for your pledges will be November 4th. We will hold our heads up high and proud, as our pledges are blessed on the altar that Sunday. Here it is, Lord. This is our way of giving thanks, praising and holding our Heavenly Father higher than all things, people, and our wants. What a glorious feeling this will be. He will be right by your side as the usher brings up your pledge to the altar at Caroline Church to honor him. What a wonderful feeling. Keep Saturday, No- vember 3 for a Celebration dinner and November 4th in your heart for a glorious experience in doing your part to help our parish grow in Faith, Love, and Hope. With heartfelt gratitude, Cn. Richard+

Our Caroline Church Vision Statement: To help people encounter the living God together and live

transformed lives for Christ.

Our Mission Statement * We, the parishioners of Caroline Church of Brookhaven, are committed to Jesus Christ, to His teaching, His life, death and resurrection, in our call to serve and worship Him, in the tradition of the Anglican Communion. * We strive to share our faith and blessings for the furtherance of His king-dom in an environment of love, understanding, and support, through prayer, worship, Christian education, and fellowship.

My Dear Friends in Christ,

Fall is upon us as we give thanks to God for the many bless-ings we have received as His children and recognize that He has given us so much. This year's financial stewardship cam-paign as you know was to, "Grow as Stewards through Faith, Love, and Hope." Of course, stewardship involves honoring, witnessing and partnering.

Who of us would give our own child to save a bunch of sinning ungrate-ful people such as us?

How can we say we are good stew-ards if we cannot give with a joyful and happy heart?

I wonder when it came time for the sacrifice of His only Son if God stopped and said, "Well, I don't know if I want to give all." No, he was fully committed and gave His only begotten son for us. Isn't a tithe a tiny thing compared to forgiveness of sins, healing, prosperity, life in abundance, and love for all time! What is a mere tithe compared to all He has given us. My friends, your tithe is much needed to keep his house in good shape. It is not enough to say, "Oh I will donate some

Parish Ministry Opportunities

Eucharistic Ministers

One of the ministries that all of us participate in every Sunday is Lay Eucharistic Ministry. Either we take a sip or intinct from the consecrated wine or we are administering that Holy Sacrament to our fellow parishioners. The 69 th General Convention of the Episcopal Church authorized a form of lay ministry titled Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM), formerly known as Chalicist, Chalice Bearer, or Chalice Administrator. This Canon of the Church provided for the laity to administer the Eucharistic Elements in “the absence of sufficient number of Priests or Deacons assisting the Celebrant” (1988). Ever since the early 1970’s the Episcopal Church has authorized laypersons to administer the Chalice at the Holy Eucharist services. Our Diocesan Bishop Provenzano made some changes in the preparation and administration of the sacraments. First, the ministerial office is now simply known as Eucharistic Ministry. Second, this liturgical office should be utilized even if tare a sufficient number of priests at a given service. Third, the training will now take place in the local parish instead of at Mercer School in Garden City and upon certification by the clergy; a license will be issued by the Rector. We have a need to expand our numbers. I would like to invite all Caroline parishioners to consider assisting at the altar in this important and holy ministry. We have a fine core of Eucharistic Ministers who have embraced their calling by Our and have been gifted with the tools to participate in our worship services through this particular altar ministry. Do consider joining this group of dedicated ministers. Please speak with Cn. Richard or call the parish office.

Sunday School Administrator We have a great team of dedicated church school teachers and substitute teachers who really care about the faith development of our children. What we need is some parishioner who will on Sunday mornings welcome new families, register new children, collect and tally classroom attendance, direct the children to appropriate classrooms, and be of support to any teacher in need. If you feel called by God to volunteer to help Administer our Church School program on Sunday mornings, please speak with Cn. Richard.

2018 Adopt a Family

Caroline Church will once again take part in

the diocesan “Adopt a Family” program, designed to help make the upcoming holi-day season more joyous and blessed for

families in need.

This year, we will provide a young immi-grant family with two children, a very spe-cial Christmas. Yolando and Roberto are

raising a 5 yr old daughter and year old son, whose needs are basic - clothing, some toys for the children and a few house hold items. Please take a tag as you leave church, pur-chase your item, wrap it for Christmas, and

attach the tag to the outside of the gift. All gifts can be returned to the church

vestibule or to the parish office, no later than December 9.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Our Anglican Heritage

Hugh Bishop of Lincoln Hugh of Lincoln was the son of William, Lord of Avalon. He was born at Avalon Castle in Burgundy and was raised and educat-ed at a convent at Villard-Benoit after his mother died when he was eight. He was professed at fifteen, ordained a deacon at nine-teen, and was made prior of a monastery at Saint-Maxim. While visiting the Grande Chartreuse with his prior in 1160. It was then he decided to become a Carthusian there and was ordained. After ten years, he was named procurator and in 1175 be-came Abbot of the first Carthusian monastery in England. This had been built by King Henry II as part of his penance for the murder of Thomas Becket.

His reputation for holiness and sanctity spread all over England and attracted many to the monastery. He admonished Henry for keeping Sees vacant to enrich the royal coffers. Income from the vacant Sees went to the royal treasury. He was then named bishop of the eighteen year old vacant See of Lincoln in 1186 - a post he accepted only when ordered to do so by the prior of the Grande Chartreuse. Hugh quickly restored clerical discipline, labored to restore religion to the diocese, and bcame known for his wisdom and justice.

He was one of the leaders in denouncing the persecution of the Jews that swept England, 1190-91, repeatedly facing down armed mobs and making them release their victims. He went on a diplomatic mission to France for King John in 1199, visiting the Grande Chartreuse, Cluny, and Citeaux, and returned from the trip in poor health. A few months later, while attending a national council in London, he was stricken and died two months later at the Old Temple in London on November 16. He was canonized twenty years later, in 1220, the first Carthusian to be so honored. His life and ministry is remembered throughout the Episcopal Church every November 17.

A Call for Acolytes! All those entering 6 Grade or above, are invited to serve on the Altar at Caroline Church. This is a great opportunity to serve your parish community by help-ing the priest and the people worship Our Lord at our weekend services. Also our Acolyte Corp have a fun

time together with BBQ’s, game days, and a yearly Paint Ball outing. Acolyte training sessions for new acolytes will be orga-nized as signups come in. Call the parish office and let Cn. Richard know you would like to join the Acolyte Corp!

Annual Acolyte Recognition

Day

We are planning once again to hold our Annual |Acolyte Recognition Day on Sunday, November 4 at the 9:30 am Service. This is a wonderful occasion for all acolytes to renew their commitment to this vital ministry of service at the altar of Caroline Church. The day will include a special brunch and an annual meeting held directly after the service in the Marco Smith building. You will have an opportunity to ask about the requirements to become a Master Acolyte. All acolytes should pray that Our Lord will inspire other teens to join our Acolytes Corp. Your Acolyte Director Mr. Duy Nguyen, and I are looking forward to this special day in your honor. RDV

“Grow as Stewards in Faith, Love and Hope!”

The theme for this year’s stewardship program beginning on October 14 was titled “Grow as Stewards through Faith, Love and Hope!” In St. Paul’s letter to the people in Thessalonica, he wrote, “We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ”

(1 Thessalonians 1:3). God graciously gives us faith, love, and hope – virtues essential for our lives as Christians and as God’s stewards. Each week during this three-week program, we focused on one of the triads of faith, love, and hope.

In week one, we were reminded that it is through faith that we have access into God’s grace and a new relationship with

him. Not only does faith justify us and give us peace with God (Romans 5:1), we are told by St. Paul in our theme verse that faith produces works. Faith leads to action. Through faith, we are empowered to fulfill God’s purposes. Our deeds as stewards are evidence of our faith.

During the second week we focused on the virtue of love. Love seeks the welfare of others “. . . since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made

complete in us” (1 John 4:11-12). God’s love in Christ will compel us to do things that appear foolish to unbelievers. God’s love prompts us to give freely of our time, talents, and treasures to help others and extend his kingdom.

In the third and final week we focused on the virtue of hope. Through the resurrection of Jesus, we, as believers, are given

the victory over death and the assurance of our salvation. Filled with the hope of eternal life with Jesus, we “give [ourselves] fully to the work of the Lord, because [we] know that our labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

To date we have received 60 pledges for our parish ministry in 2019. As we bless those Pledges for the ministry at Caroline Church in the coming year on Sunday November 4th and enjoy on Saturday, November 3 a Celebration Dinner in the MCS building, may each of us grow in our relationship with Our Lord and one another.

Enjoy the Convenience of

Electronic Giving!

For the past couple of years here at Caroline Church, electronic giving has been available for all parishioners. This form of giving to the ministry of the Church offers church members a convenient, safe and simple way to make regular church offerings without the need to write checks, carry cash or prepare envelopes. Some statistics: 74% of Americans say they write no more than one check per month, 59% of donors over the age of 65 gave a gift online last year, and 57% of all internet traffic will come from mobile devices by 2018. The benefit for you is that it provides convenience, keeps you on track with financial stewardship, guarantees your uninterrupted support and provides you today’s most popular payment methods. Electronic giving is good for Caroline Church in that it provides much-needed donation consistency, saves the church staff time, adds greater security in the church office and has a positive impact on the environment. The easiest way to start is to go online from your computer to our church web page, enter donation information on our church’s online donation page once in gets you to Vanco Payment Solutions. You can use any credit or debit card, or checking or savings account. From here you can manage recurring donations and view your online giving history. Electronic giving is actually safer than writing checks or carrying cash. Secure donation services are provided by Vanco Payment Solutions. Vanco processes electronic donations for more than 15,000 churches and nonprofit organizations. A report of your giving is sent to Caroline Church. We hope this fast, convenient and consistent way of giving to the ministry at Caroline Church is something that you will embrace and support.

Caroline Church Tricentennial Commission Being Formed

This newly formed commission will create a year of events that will have a positive and lasting impact on our commu-

nity, showcasing our special Anglican character, while furthering our legacy. Caroline Church’s 300th Anniversary

will be an opportunity to discover our shared heritage, commemorate our storied history, recognize our development,

and collaborate on our bright future.

The Caroline Church Christmas Fair is quickly approaching. Mark your calendars now! Saturday, December 1st from 9:30 – 3:00.

Please prayerfully consider how you can help make this year’s fair a great success. Below are some suggestions on ways you can contribute your time and talents:

Bake Cookies for the Cookie Walk. Please note that all cookies should be home-baked; they don’t have to be home-made.

Donate any new items that you have around the house for the “new gifts” table. Many of us have “that” closet or drawer where these items seem to accumulate. Do you?

Shop on the day of the fair and bring a friend (s) with you! Make sure to pre-order your Christmas wreath. Contact Susan Rydzeski at 631-751-7693. Drop off your gently used Christmas ornaments and decorations so that the tables will be overflowing with Christmas cheer for our eager shoppers. Do you make a good pot of soup? Volunteer to prepare a pot or to make a kid friendly tray of macaroni and cheese

for the Lunch Room. Contact Lainey Cash at 631-428-0475. Help to set-up for the fair on the evening of Thursday, November 29th. This involves setting up tables and moving

furniture. Help needed during the day on Friday, November 30th, to set up the merchandise to be sold. Help to break down the fair on Saturday, December 1st at 2:45. Plastic bags are needed. If you have any, please bring them in. Bake anything that you want that can be sold! There is always a bake sale section at the Christmas Fair. Many people are needed to help staff the tables the day of the fair. You could help for an hour or the whole day! The Thrifty Boutique wants your donations of jewelry, clothing (clean, wearable, and on hangers please), accessories such as ties, belts, and scarves. Donations can be left at the Church office. Donate something special to this year’s silent auction. Contact Barbara Russell at 631-689-9434. Volunteer to prepare and move the outside portable sign providing basic fair information to the community. Are you good with children? Are you good at very simple crafts? Why not volunteer to help with the children’s

crafts tables. Santa will be making an appearance at the fair this year and will be setting up for pictures downstairs in the Marco

Smith Building. Are you the person that can transform the space into one shining with Christmas spirit? All fair proceeds, except for those from the Cookie Walk, will be distributed by the Vestry to community outreach. Proceeds from the Cookie Walk will benefit the Church School. Contact Virginia Cash at631-751-3541 or at [email protected] for more information.

Church School News As we come into the month of November, we look forward to sharing the ‘Operation Shoe Box’ collection with those less fortunate than us. Please remember to bring your Shoe Boxes in by Friday, November 9th so they can be delivered before Christmas. We appreciate you joining with the children of Caroline Church to make a difference in a child’s life by filling one shoe box. December 2nd is the 1st Sunday in Advent. We will have a combined Sunday School for part of that day as we will make our Advent wreaths. 1 wreath per family, so brothers and sisters will be working on their family Advent Wreath together that day. Don’t be late!! We also have family devotionals and activity books for each child to bring home. Advent is a family time as we await the birth of Our Lord, a time to share together the wonderful gift of Jesus coming into our world as a baby. We encourage you to share this time daily with your family through the use of these books. November is also a time that we look ahead to our Christmas Pageant. Anyone interested in assisting in the cultivation of this pageant, please contact Cindy Schleider at [email protected] or 631-473-4610. You need not have a child in Sunday School to help out. We need those who can design costumes, work on props, set up the stage and breakdown and assist at rehearsals. We will start pageant sign up’s for children as well as assis-tants this month. Our pageant is scheduled for Sunday, December 16th at 9:30am. This is a wonderful time to teach our children all about ‘giving of oneself’ instead of receiving - as Jesus gave himself to us so that we will one day be with him in heaven. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to be a part of this Caroline Church event. Lot’s going on and lot’s to do with time moving fast. Let us fill that time with our thoughts on Jesus and serving Him. We can’t do it without you.

An Update on

the New

Columbarium at

Caroline Church

All Saint’s and All Soul’s Day

Praying for the departed appears in many places in our Book of Common Prayer. Although there is a weekly opportunity for remembering the dead in the Prayers of the People in the Holy Eucharist, our Prayer Book Calendar lists November 1st as All Saints’ Day and November 2 as Commemoration of All Faithful Departed - All Souls Day. Since our society allows less and less time for grief, the observance of these days is an important part of our pastoral care of the bereaved. We show our solidarity with one another and our love for those who have died, commending them in faith to God. We are in continuing fellowship with the faithful departed within the communion of saints and the unsearchable riches of Christ’s passion applied to their existence and ours. The first and last names of any departed you wish to be remembered will be read aloud as part of the intercessions for the Burial of the Dead at our Holy Eucharist Healing service on All Saints’ Day, Thursday, November 1 at 12:00 Noon. The names will also be reproduced in the Sunday bulletin and remembered on the Sunday after All Saints’ Day, November 4.

Presiding Bishop’s Statement on Tree of Life Tragedy

October 27, 2018: Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has issued the following statement:

Dear Friends,

I’m here in Des Moines, Iowa, at the convention of the Episcopal diocese of Iowa. It’s Saturday, and several hours ago you learned, as did we all, that a gunman entered Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. A number of people have been killed and wounded Our Jewish neighbors, our brothers and sisters, are fearful and we must stand with them and provide comfort and support for them and for all It is reported that the gunman not only ranted anti-Semitic sayings, he has also ranted and spoken against immigrants and refugees and other peoples. We must pray, we must pray for him, we must pray for the spirit of our nation, that a spirit of love and compassion and good-ness and decency would pervade and that spirits of hatred ad bigotry would be cast away. But, above all, at this time, pray for those who have died and for their families and their loved ones. Pray for t hose who are wounded. Pray for the first responders, pray for our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community. Pray for the Tree of Life Synagogue. Pray for the City of Pittsburgh. Pray for America. Pray for us all. And then, go out and do something. Do something that helps to end the long night and helps to bring in the daylight. Visit a neighbor Remind our Jewish brothers and sister that they do not stand alone. Care for someone. Love. Stand for what is right and good. Then pray. And then act. And pray the Lord’s Prayer. God love you. God bless you. And may God hold us all in those Almighty hands of love. The Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate, The Episcopal Church

As we have now ended our discount pricing period, we thank all who have taken advantage of securing niche spaces in our future columbarium. Having provided parishioner discounts, we are also aware that the idea of a Columbarium sparked many family end of life discussions. The response to date has been enough to financially offset the construction by nearly fifty percent. Although the discount period has passed, parishioners may still reserve niche space by making a down payment and paying the remainder over time. Please see the Columbarium Policy for additional details. Upon final approval by the Vestry, we believe construction, by Creter Vault Corp. of New Jersey, may begin in the late spring/ early Summer of 2019. The columbarium will be locat-ed in the center of our cremains area which honors past members of our congregation. As the Circle-of-Life continues the columbarium will provide a place of remembrance for families wanting that connection with Caroline Church throughout all of life's stages, from celebrat-ing births, baptisms, communion, marriage to commemorating a life once lived, and all those wonderful and challenging days in between. A columbarium will provide the congregation with that close connection to one another within a faith community. Don Muffly and Ginny Apmann remain available to answer any questions you may have
