From the preparations that began in late winter through the daily activities taking place this week, Vacation Bible School demonstrates God’s love, truth, presence and movement all around. The older group, affectionately known as “The Grinding Gears” spent this morning reflecting upon the Bible stories of the week and making the connection between the stories and the ways they can make peace in their own lives. I continue to be amazed at the insight, wisdom, truth-telling and courage of these second, third and fourth graders as they articulate their faith and practice as Christians. Here are the poems they wrote as they gathered today. In them, the children reveal their understanding and in their own words, articulate their observations and beliefs about making peace. They recognize the universality of the need to make peace. They see inclusion as integral to the process. They name the difficulty of making peace and imagine situations where those who are antagonistic can change and become peacemakers. They declare the imperative for peacemaking, using language that insists on peace being the way. They repeat, over and over, the desire for harmony, even when there is disagreement. My prayer for these young peacemakers, and for all of us, is that we will have God’s strength, courage, vision and encouragement to make peace in all the places we go and be witnesses to God’s liberating and life-giving Love. Musings from St. Andrew’s

Night at Progressive Field: We were 92 strong and we were there to see the Indians bring home a win. What could go wrong? It was a beautiful evening, we survived climbing the stairs up to our seats (thank goodness for the handrails!) and the Indians ace, Corey Kluber, was pitching.

Kluber who was the first American League pitcher to reach 10 wins this season and who hadn’t walked a batter since May 8

th. Kluber

hurls his first pitch and it’s hit out of the park. Well, that got our attention. Something wasn’t right with Kluber and throw in a couple of Cleveland errors and we were down 4-0 by the middle of the 4

th inning. The Twins certainly

knew how to quiet the crowd, but we weren’t going to let it spoil our evening. It was $1 dog night and we still had fireworks to look forward to after the game.

The Indians tried to mount a comeback in the 9

th inning, but it fell short and the final score was

the Twins 6, the Indians 3. As I sat and watched the fireworks surrounded by family and friends I realized it really had been a perfect evening, despite the loss.

Kluber showed us that it’s OK to be human and that you can’t be perfect all the time and the song that played during the fireworks finale was “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. I thought it was a fitting ending to another wonderful St. Andrew’s night at Progressive Field.

(Rector’s reflections continued from first page.)

Be a peacemaker Everyone is a peace maker All living things are peacemakers People are peacemakers Everyone can be a peacemaker All people are peacemakers Call everyone a peace maker Especially nice peacemakers Make people think peace All people should provide for others Keep people happy Everyone should be treated the same way Really good peace in life. (Written by Camille, Ella, Ellizabeth, Luke, and Braiden, assisted by Aidan and “Mr. Scott.”) Being nice is being a peacemaker Everyone should be included As a peacemaker, you do nice things Peacemakers are kind and generous Everyone should be kind to one another All around the world, people spread peace. Consult with others before acting Even when people are bad, you should try to make them spread peace. Make peace with everyone, even people you don’t know Anyone can be a peacemaker if they try Kindness is a peacemaking thing Everyone should try to make bullies, peacemakers Ready to make peace with everyone. (Written by Tyler, Isaiah, Dakota, Rielle and Cora, assisted by Cole and “Ms. Judi”.)

The Elyria Farmer’s Market is now open every

summer Saturday. St. Andrew’s will have a presence on the following Saturdays and would love a few more volunteers to come once or twice: July 7 & 21, August 4 & 18, and September 1 & 15. This is a wonderful way to “be church” and show the love of Jesus out in the community. See Rev. June, or Barb Prior to volunteer.

UPDATE ON THE BUDGET DEFICIT In May, during the Vestry meeting, considerable discussion took place concerning the projected budget deficit of $ 56,000. A motion was made to charge the Finance Commission ‘ To review all expenses and report back to explain all costs and options for reducing them in order to reduce the budget deficit’. During June, a Finance Task Force met three times and reviewed each line item of the expenses based on need and the overall vision and mission of our church. It was determined that a total budget reduction of over $6,000 was to be proposed. The Task Force also determined several areas of controls and procedures that should be implemented for reducing and controlling cost. At the June Vestry meeting, the recommendation for reducing the budget was approved. The Treasurer will make the changes and notify each affected areas of responsibility. I will be sending a report to the Staff and Commissions asking them to consider implementing the proposed controls and procedures which should also curb costs and improve our cash flow. The Commissions have been meeting to set goals and in September, the Finance Commission will submit a preliminary and comprehensive budget to vestry for 2019 prior to our Pledge Drive. It will explain what is being proposed to carry out our mission and what areas may be reduced if our revenue cannot meet our expenses. In December or January, we will be inviting a member of the Diocese to make a presentation on Planned Giving and Endowments. Also, the Junior Warden Matt Van Wormer and others are looking at various Fundraising activities to generate additional income. We are all working together, as a congregation of faith, creativity and support, to Bring Christ to the World and the World to Christ. If you have any ideas, comments, questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. In His Service, Doug Skladan – Finance Commission Chair and Senior Warden.

Thank you! We give thanks for the generosity of spirit and practice of all those who worked to prepare, lead, teach, help and serve in 2018 Vacation Bible School. The congregation commissioned these leaders last Sunday and God’s faithfulness carried us through. Most of all, we give thanks for the children and youth in our parishes and beyond. They are God’s treasured gifts!
