It started out like any other day at the office…
I had just ventured out on my lunch break…. when she showed up
Hi ya boss.
Hey, I need your help and I need it
fast.
On my lunch break?
Yeah, we don’t know what training delivery method to
use when, it’s a mess.
I started to imagine the chaos, the agony, the missed learning opportunities…it wasn’t pretty….
Then she zoomed off into the cityscape…
We’ve got to solve this mystery. Help me figure out the clues …and fast. How do we match the right delivery with the right content?
Stakes are high and time is short.
The news of wrong delivery method was spreading…

Investigation Opened By Harry James Las Vegas, NV– It started out as just another normal day. Larry the Learner had just sat at his desk to embark on a learning journey. A journey that turned horrific within only a few moments. The result is unnecessary incident that could and should have been avoided by having the right instructional strategy coupled with the right content.

Advantages
First, get a pen and paper and draw something like this.
You do have a pen and paper? Right?
Best Used For:
Now let’s search Larry’s office for clues…
Today: Go see Learning Lady.
We need to visit one of the toughest L&D folks I know. The Learning
Lady.
Let’s get going to her favorite hangout.
On her lunch hour she hangs at a place called “The Dinner”
Yeah, she was a former school teacher. As wicked with the red pen as they come.
Oh, no I don’t.
It’s not “The Dinner.” It’s “The Diner.”
So tell me about learning deliverys.
…deliverys No! …deliveries Yes!
First, let me tell you about the advantages of Instructor-Led
Training.

Let’s take some notes on that.
She started to rattle off the advantages.
Creates a sense of community in organization.
Can quickly be developed.
Allows specific questions to be answered immediately.
Instructor can see if learners are “getting it.”
Got, it. So any disadvantages.
Plenty, but let’s see if you detectives can
think of any.
Ah, good. Now here is what instructor-led training is best
used for.
Topic requires discussion or demonstration.
Anticipation of many questions
Needs to be created and delivered quickly.
Nuanced information.

I can’t give you any more information. I have to go. To learn more, you must talk to…
Our conversation was over. She had to go.
“The King Pin.”
It was a short trip to The King Pin’s Office.
He appeared to be expecting me….
I was expecting you. I got a text you were coming.
Hello King Pin. Call me Bob.
Hi, ya Bob.
I need to know about OJT advantages and
pitfalls. I only know about
advantages..
Start talk’n Bob.
Actually, I think I’d like you to call me King Pin.
On-the-Job Training, OJT has lots of great
advantages. They include…
Allowance for one-to-one exchange of
knowledge.
Hands-on learning.
Cost effective.
Thanks, helpful but come on King Pin, spill the beans
on disadvantages.
Alright, alright, I do know some disadvantages.
But why don’t you tell me?
Not scalable.
Fundamentals are not always covered.
Very instructor and situational dependent.
Not always consistent.
Taking knowledgeable employee off line.
Anything else you want to tell me?
Yeah, read what’s in this folder, it can
help.
Alright, detectives did you get all that?

Now we need to find Ivan…the Informant...
I knew one of his old hangouts...
He was about as friendly as a ghost on Halloween with no one to haunt.
Hello, again clueless…
Sure, I’ll tell you about eLearning.
He was about as friendly as a ghost on Halloween with no one to haunt.
Wait, here’s what we know.
Not bad, but let me tell you what I know.
He then grabbed his typewriter and made some notes to explain about eLearning.

Let’s write this down, good stuff.
You know, the next question. What
about disadvantages?
None, I love elearning.
Your wrong Ivan, we know some disadvantages. You
are holding out on us.
Ok, ok…here’s what I got.
Disadvantages: -No ability to ask questions -No personal touch -No “feel” for actual equipment -No social interactions
How is your chart looking detectives? We must be getting
close.

Before you and your loser friends …go, here is a pack of matches.
You might want to start a fire.
Or, it might be a clue.
I arrived at the place on the matchbook, as shady as a pine grove at Midnight…
I found a scrap of paper on the ground. It was a clue alright.
Look a scrap of paper, it’s a clue
alright.
When to use eLearning for Instruction -Consistency is required -Needs to be available 24/7 -Geographically dispersed workforce -Assessment is required
Suddenly “Boss Lady” pulled up in her fancy car.
She threw me a folder…
Then she zoomed off into the cityscape…

We need more information from Boss Lady…let’s go.
This was it, she was going to tell me about the best type of learning delivery.
Have a seat.
There is no chair.
Ok, look…check out your chart.

To solve the mystery, you need to understand that a blended approach is the best. Think of your training strategy as a continuum and not
as a series of one-offs.
Also, you didn’t even factor in things like cost. OJT and Instructor-led are lower cost initially but higher cost in the long run. For
classes that run more than once.
So, the bottom line is that you need all three Instructor-led, OJT and eLearning to
have the most instructional and cost effective approach.
Alright, detectives let’s close the case.
It was starting to look like the case wouldn’t end so easily….
Wait. This case is not going to end so easily.
Did you see this morning’s paper?
I’ll conduct an investigation
alright.
But now…I’m out of time. We’ll solve that case in a future presentation.
But lucky for you, UL EduNeering has a
whitepaper on this topic. Get it today!
The End
