June is al ways jam packedwith oc ca sions and mile -stones…. And this June is nodif fer ent! We will be cel e -brat ing the launch of newgrad u ates and the ac com -plish ments of a pro fes sionallife time with our 50-YearMem bers and I would like toex tend our heart i est con grat u -la tions to both groups!! Cur -rent ACS Pres i dent, Dr.Jo seph S. Fran cisco, will bepre sent ing cer tif i cates to our50-Year Mem bers to marktheir mile stone.

Mo ments like these make mecon scious of the pas sage oftime. I would like to asksome of our 50-Year Mem -bers what they en vi sioned the fu ture to look like and whatcon tri bu tions they wanted tomake in their ca reers and seehow many of their am bi tionsare re al ized in the out -comes… I could pose thesame ques tions to our fledg -ling mem bers. How aboutmak ing some pre dic tions forme? It could be come a newPhil a del phia Sec tion tra di tion —re cord ing the pre dic tionsand then “open ing the time

cap sule” to re visit them when the Class of 2010 reaches its’50th an ni ver sary in 2060.

It is al ways amaz ing, to me,how sci ence fic tion can be -come sci ence re al ity and how in spi ra tion and in no va tioncan lead to things that change our way of life. We owe a lotto our ed u ca tors who un self -ishly give that in spi ra tion and en cour age ment to their stu -dents ev ery day and we wereproud to rec og nize such aned u ca tor last month in Dr.Sally Mallory, our Un der -grad u ate Teach ing Awardwin ner! Teach ing is hardwork that too of ten goes un -ac knowl edged and un derap -pre ci ated in our so ci etywhere sports fig ures com -mand stag ger ing sal a ries dur -ing their lim ited ca reers. Re search sci en tists may notset re cords but they do leavelast ing leg a cies to all of us.

Thomas Ed i son said thatmost ac com plish ments arethe re sult of a lot of hardwork but I have to ad mit thatit would be “cool” to seemore sci ence fic tion turnedinto sci ence re al ity…. Justlike the “new el e ment” TonyStark hap pened to whip up inthe new Iron Man 2 movie! Makes me want to head down to the base ment and start tin -ker ing myself!

I want to have a front rowseat for all the life chang ingdis cov er ies to come… be -cause at heart, I am al waysgo ing to be a sci en tific thrillseeker!

Have a Happy/Safe Sum merand come back re-en er gizedand ready to tackle our newac tiv i ties in Sep tem ber!

In ter ested in Work ingfor ACS?

My grad u ate ad vi sor JimCason and my post doc toralad vi sor at Co lum bia, GilbertStork, made my ca reerpos si ble.

I started at Rohm and Haas asa re search chem ist and re tiredas man ager of tech ni cal re -cruit ing and uni ver sity re la -tions for our US sites—quitean in ter est ing ca reer. It would not have hap pened with outthe strong sup port, from thebe gin ning, of peo ple likeEllington Bea vers, PatMcNulty, Bob Ross and FredWil son, among oth ers. Later, thanks to the firm com mit -ment of our tech ni cal man ag -ers and the gen er ous work ofour vol un teer re cruit ers (allen gi neers and sci en tists), ourre cruit ing pro grams be camena tion ally re spected for qual -ity, in teg rity and suc cess.

The Phil a del phia Sec tion hasbeen a warm and col le gial or -ga ni za tion for me. I joined in1966 and chaired it in 1990. I learned a lot from Glenn andBarbara Ullyot and Mad eleine Joullié, and en joyed work ingwith our Sec tion’s ca pa ble ad -min is tra tive man ag ers, Shir -ley Golden and her suc ces sorLibby Harper. As an ACSCoun cilor in the 1990s, Ibene fited from NewmanBortnick’s coun sel. Later, asan ACS Board mem ber, PaulAn der son and Hank Whalenwere quite help ful to me. As

Board Chair, I was for tu nateto work with a tal ented, ded i -cated, de light ful team. Thechem i cal sci ences are in deeda so cial en ter prise, and weowe our suc cess to many.

I am grate ful to God for themany op por tu ni ties to con trib -ute. I must also thank mywife Barbara for her re mark -able pa tience and tol er ance,al though she some times won -dered whether “ACS” was the ini tials of The Other Woman. Since re tir ing, I en joy de vot -ing more time to her and ourfam ily, and com ing to termswith that pregnant job jar.

American Chemical Society Webinars (ACS Webinars™) is a weekly online event serving to connect ACS members and scientific professionals with subject matter experts and global thought

leaders in chemical sciences, management, and business on relevant professional issues. Each webinar is 60 minutes in length, comprising of a short presentation followed by Q&A with the speaker. The live webinars are held on Thursdays from 2-3pm ET and recordings of the past

webinars are available online. View and register for upcoming events at http://boilthisdown.org/?page_id=385 or email [email protected].

June 3, 2010 - Effective Technical Writing – Tips and Strategies Every Scientist Should Know. Does your job require frequent technical writing? Do you ever feel frustrated with technical writing, either with your own or that of others? Technical writing is a regular, but often considered painful, part of life for many scientists. Fortunately, there is help! Improve your technical and scientific writing skills without leaving your desk! Join our speaker Aline Harrison, the instructor for Effective Technical Writing Short Course offered by the

American Chemical Society Office of Professional Education, as she shares tips on how to improve your ability to write technically, the “pain-free” way.

June 17, 2010 - A Life of Innovation – Finding Your Passion. How would you like to shape your scientific legacy? Get inspired with remarkable life stories of great scientists. David Walt’s Laboratory at Tufts is world-renowned for its pioneering work that applies micro and nanotechnology to urgent biological problems. Join us as David Walt, an accomplished educator, researcher, and entrepreneur shares his journey and his passion for science and innovation. Learn how to uncover your passion and build your own journey!

July 1, 2010 - From Laboratory to Licensing: Protecting Your Intellectual Property Along the Way. You may be working on breakthrough research but do you know how to protect it? Scientific professionals devote a tremendous amount of time and energy to create valuable intellectual property; yet, many do not invest the necessary time to learn what it takes to protect their work. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, in 2009, just under forty percent of patent applications were granted. Navigating the path from discovery to market can be complex and tricky. Learn from our speaker, Tom Steinberg, of Roberts,

Mlotkowski, Safran & Cole, strategies you need to know to protect your life’s work.

July 8, 2010 - Chemicals & the Economy Mid-Year Updates – Impact and Outlook for Executives and Scientists. Recovery is the new buzzword, but is it here to stay? Would you like to know what indicators to watch for? The chemical industry is a well-known leading indicator for the world economy. Yet chemical professionals are often unaware of this significance. Learn from our speaker, Paul Hodges, of International eChem, strategies for navigating these uncertain economic waters. Learn how understanding the economy and chemical industry trends can help you better plan for your career and business.
