The Catechism of the Catholic Church ( Catechism or CCC) is a unique book which presents what Catholic Christians essentially and fundamentally believe, as drawn from Scripture and the Tradition of the Church. The world catechism comes from the Greek: κατηχέω (katēkhizein), meaning ‘to teach orally’ . It was promulgated in 1992 by Saint Pope John Paul II. Its purpose is to guard the Deposit of Faith which the Lord entrusted to His Church, and present it in all its fullness to each new generation. It is unique because, as well as presenting the Deposit of Faith, as received from Christ , it also provides what should be considered the single greatest Catholic need in the world today, namely, to understand what we believe, and to enable us to apply it to our every-day lives. Every Catholic should have one in their home. In this modern world, we are trained to the hilt in every humanistic subject under the sun (science, history, literature etc). But most Catholics are undereducated in their Faith and vulnerable to secular ideologies. Confusion among Catholics on even the most fundamental doctrines of faith and morals is widespread. Think about the parable of the sower all good seed is sown, but on four different kinds of ground. Only the last soil produces any yield. Some seed “fell on the edge of the path; and the birds came and ate them up.” Jesus to explained that When anyone hears the words of the Kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart. This is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path” (Matthew 13:10, 18-19). How should we read Catechism and put it to apostolic use? Before answering this question we should first understand what the Catechism is not it is not a reference book like a dictionary or encyclopaedia; it is not a handbook of religious ideas or ideals it is a one-volume reservoir of Catholic Truth and Practice for everyone who wants to bring others to Christ, to solidify the faith of the baptised, and to defend the Catholic Faith both inside and outside the Church. One can, of course, use it to look up specific teachings, but to benefit fully, it should not only be read, but prayerfully meditated. For it to fully bear fruit, we should know the Catechism, trust the Catechism, live the Catechism and share the Catechism. The Four Pillars of Faith: The Catechism of the Catholic Church is organised into 4 main sections called Pillars , as they form the foundations of the Christian life. 1. Profession of Faith (the Creed) 2. Celebration of the Christian Mystery (Sacraments) 3. Life in Christ (Commandments) 4. Christian Prayer (Our Father) Part One. Profession of faith: Those who belong to Christ through faith and Baptism must confess their baptismal faith before men (Mt 10:32; Rom 10:9). First therefore the Catechism expounds Revelation, by which God addresses and gives himself to man, and the faith by which man responds to God (Section One). The profession of faith summarises the gifts that God gives man: as the Author of all that is good; as Redeemer; and as Sanctifier. It develops these in the three chapters on our baptismal faith in the one God: the almighty Father, the Creator; His Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour; and the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier, in the Holy Church (Section Two). Part Two. Sacraments: The second part of the Catechism explains how God’s salvation, accomplished once for all through Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit, is made present in the sacred actions of the Church’s liturgy (Section One), especially in the seven sacraments (Section Two). Part Three. Life in Christ: The third part of the Catechism deals with the final end of man created in the image of God: beatitude, and the ways of reaching it - through right conduct freely chosen, with the help of God’s law and grace (Section One), and through conduct that fulfils the twofold commandment of charity, specified in God’s Ten Commandments (Section Two). Part Four. Christian Prayer: The last part of the Catechism deals with the meaning and importance of prayer in the life of believers (Section One). It concluded with a brief commentary on the seven petitions of the Lord’s Prayer (Section Two), for in this prayer we find the sum of all the good things which we must hope for and which our heavenly Father wants to grant us. Do not be intimidated by the Catechism. It is actually more easy to read than you might think. Likewise, do not be afraid to read your Bible! The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God, and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for. ADOREMUS: EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS LIVERPOOL: SEPTEMBER 2018

The Eucharist is fundamental to the Christian Faith and Life. With only 3 weeks to the Eucharistic Congress, we will reflect upon the centrality and importance of the Eucharist in the life of the Church.

The aims of Adoremus are: • To rejuvenate Eucharistic Adoration • To encourage greater love for the mystery of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar • To kindle deeper understanding of the place of the Eucharist in the life of the church • To provide practical resources for Eucharistic Adoration for Parishes and Schools • To better form Extraordinary Ministers • To better equip Parish Catechists and Schools • To confirm Parish ministry around the centrality of the Eucharist

Because Adoration of the Eucharist deepens our relationship with Christ, it enables us to be more effective disciples who will be better able to lead others to the life of the Church that has the Eucharist at its heart.

From the Introduction to Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist outside Mass:

“The celebration of the Eucharist is the centre of the entire Christian life, both for the Church universal and for the local congregations of the Church. ‘The other sacraments, all the ministries of the Church, and the works of the apostolate are united with the Eucharist and are directed toward it. For the holy Eucharist contains the entire spiritual treasure of the Church, that is, Christ himself, our Passover and living bread. Through his flesh, made living and life-giving by the Holy Spirit, he offers life to men, who are thus invited and led to offer themselves, their work, and all creation together with him.” [cf. 1, 5]

From the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Benedict XVI Sacramentum Caritatis †

“In the Eucharist, the Son of God comes to meet us and desires to become one with us; Eucharistic adoration is simply the natural consequence of the Eucharistic celebration, which is itself the Church’s supreme act of adoration. Receiving the Eucharist means adoring him whom we receive. Only in this way do we become one with him, and are given, as it were, a foretaste of the beauty of the heavenly liturgy. The act of adoration outside Mass prolongs and intensifies all that takes place during the liturgical celebration itself. Indeed, ‘only in adoration can a profound and genuine reception mature. And it is precisely this personal encounter with the Lord that then strengthens the social mission contained in the Eucharist, which seeks to break down not only the walls that separate the Lord and ourselves, but also and especially the walls that separate us from one another.” [66]

ST BARTHOLOMEW

Feast Day Friday 24 August

St Bartholomew was one of

the 12 disciples. All that is

known of him with certainty is

that he is mentioned in the

Synoptic Gospels and Acts as

one of the twelve apostle. His

name, a patronymic, means son of Tolomai

and scholars believe he is the same

as Nathanael mentioned in John, who says he

is from Cana and that Jesus called him an

"Israelite... incapable of deceit." The

Roman Martyrology says he preached

in India and Greater Armenia, where he was

flayed and beheaded by King Astyages.

Tradition has the place as Abanopolis on the

west coast of the Caspian Sea and that he also

preached in Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt.

The Gospel of Bartholomew is apochryphal

and was condemned in the decree of Pseudo-

Gelasius. Feast Day August 24.

“The Eucharist is essential for us: it is Christ who wishes to enter our lives and fill us with His grace.”

Pope Francis
