Ecumenical Choral Evensong
January 21 4:00 pm
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham
Reception to follow St. Jude Hall
This year’s observance of the 500th anniversary of the beginnings of the Reformation is a moment of
prayerful reflection for Christians everywhere. Indeed, the anniversary offers new impetus for Churches and
Faith Communities to seek the communion amongst Christians for which Our Lord Himself prayed the
night before He died.
You are invited to participate in an ecumenical Evensong on Sunday, January 21 which occurs within the
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Our own Bishop, Most Reverend Steven Lopes, will be the officiant at
Evensong. Rt. Reverend Daniel Martins, Episcopal Bishop of Springfield, has agreed to give the sermon
during the celebration.
Christians face ever-increasing secular headwinds from a society that has forgotten its roots and grown
deaf to the Gospel call to conversion. It is my hope that a moment of prayer among Christians will bear
new witness to the Truth of God in Christ and the credibility of faithful discipleship.

The Solemnity of the Epiphany & the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Twelve days after Christmas comes the Solemnity of the Epiphany, the great feast of the Manifestation of Christ
to the Gentiles. Though this festival traditionally falls on January 6, in the United States and Canada it is cur-
rently transferred to the Sunday between January 2 and 8. As a part of the Latin Rite, the Ordinariate of the
Chair of St. Peter follows this liturgical norm of the Latin Rite dioceses of North America. This year the second
Sunday after Christmas falls on January 7.
More ancient than the celebration of Christmas, the observance of the Epiphany began in the Eastern portion of
the Church in the third century AD as a theologically rich and comprehensive commemoration of the mystery of
God’s revelation of His Incarnate Son. The word “Epiphany” means manifestation, and in the West the feast came
to center on Christ’s appearance to the star-led Magi. The time between Epiphany and Septuagesima (the third
Sunday before Lent) commemorates three manifestations of Our Lord: (1) to the Gentiles in the persons of the
Wise Men; (2) to the Jews at his Baptism in the Jordan; and (3) to his disciples at the marriage feast in Cana of
Galilee.
On the Epiphany, it is an ancient tradition to announce the date of Easter and to mark all the holy days that take
their dates from the timing of the Paschal Triduum. This proclamation, formally announced by the Deacon at
Mass on the Epiphany, arose long before calendars were widely available, but today it still serves to connect
Christmas and Easter and to orient the faithful in the sanctification of time toward the mystery of the Resurrec-
tion.
The blessing of homes is another very old and popular Epiphany custom. Using blessed chalk, many households
mark the lintel over their entrance door with the year and with the inscription CMB, the initials of Caspar, Mel-
chior and Balthasar, the traditional names of the Magi. The inscription also stands for Christus Mansionem Bene-
dicat, which means “Christ, bless this home.” The popular form of the inscription incorporates the year as follows:
20+C+M+B+18
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord both concludes Christmastide and draws out the celebration of the Epipha-
ny. Anciently, the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan was a principal focus of Christ’s Epiphany (as it remains
today for the Eastern churches). In Western Christendom, the observance of Our Lord’s Baptism came to follow
the commemoration of His appearance to the Magi. Already, so soon after Christmas, we approach with the Bap-
tism of Jesus the mysteries of Lent and Easter. As the liturgical scholar Pius Parsch puts it, “In the symbolism of
His baptism, Christ displayed beforehand His redemptive death and resurrection. Himself immaculate, He as-
sumes the sins of the world, descends into the purifying waters, and raises mankind to divine sonship.”
