“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” For most of us, we will never be called to this extreme; and for many, that’s a relief. We honor our military and first responders for their willingness to do this, but we don’t put ourselves in this category. We don’t think Jesus’ message applies to our reality. But it does, because the message concerns the rela onship between sacrifice and love. You can’t have one without the other. Christ’s great love for us led him to Calvary. Each me we “die” to ourselves, we echo this great act of mercy: each me a couple promises fidelity to the other and to God; each me a friend lends a sympathe c ear; each

me a parent sits vigil. These acts require pu ng others first. Some mes this is easy; but the true test comes when this profound love demands more. More me. More energy. More pa ence. More prayer. In these moments we are most connected to our Savior, seeing on a very human level the all-consuming demand of true love. It can also be scary when we feel our reserves are lacking. “I can’t love more. I can’t do this anymore. I’m afraid. I am not a saint.” But Jesus does not ask us for sainthood; He asks us to try; and to trust in Him. With His grace, the inevitable trials we face CAN be faced. We can do the things we never thought possible. We can be that same refuge to another that Christ is to us. Mother Teresa once said, “Intense love does not measure, it just gives.” Today we honor our mothers, so fi ng during the month of Mary our Blessed Mother. For some, this will be a day of flowers and gi s. For some, though, this may be a difficult day. Fractured rela onships, unrealized dreams, or grief might be the order of your day. To all, I offer my sincere prayers and encouragement, and I ask you to reach out to reaffirm a strong rela onship or repair a broken one. If this is not possible, then I ask you to be as a mother to someone else: to give of yourself freely and unreservedly, to love as Mary loved – with strength of heart and firmness of faith. Ask yourself this week, who would I give myself to this week? God Bless. Fr. Posey
