Parish Staff

It is not those who say to me, Lord, Lord, who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Ma hew 7:21) Throughout Ma hew’s Gospel Jesus has warned against hypocrisy, one of the greatest affronts to the Lord’s uncondi onal love. He warned the Pharisees against their passion for the le er of the law while ignoring its intent. He chided them for being whitewashed on the outside, yet having hearts blackened by inconsistencies and pe y grievances. Jesus asks who the be er son was. He does not tell his au‐dience, but rather encourages them to come to their own conclusions. In doing so, he allows the Pharisees, and us, the chance to grow in understanding the kind of faith God wants from his people: real, honest, and lived. God desires less the “burnt offerings” than true repent‐ance. This is the crux of this parable and a theme to Jesus’ teachings. Who has learned more, or exhibits more, the idea of duty in this parable than the first son? He knows what is asked of him; and while he displays the honesty (or sass if you are parents) to say no at first; he ul mately fulfills his father’s request. His heart was turned away from himself. The second son, let us call him Eddie Haskell from the 1960s show, “Leave it to Beaver,” the epitome of someone who says one thing but then does another, just parrots what he thinks the father wants to hear. He talked the talk of an obedient son but stopped there; he placed his wants ahead of his responsibili es. God desires authen city, acknowledgment, and ac on. He wants us to come to him as we are; he wants us to be honest about our failings, and he wants us to work to change. C K. Chesterton once famously said that Peter may have denied Christ, but he never denied his denial. Those we think are the least trustworthy o en mes are the ones who bring us closer to Christ and our faithfulness to him. Today we acknowledge Migrant and Refugee Week. Let us pray that all who seek shelter from persecu on, hunger, or unrest find peace in a new home. “Displaced people offer us this opportunity to meet the Lord, “even though our eyes find it hard to recognize him.” Pope Francis
