Occasionally I get an opportunity to travel, usually by plane which is exciting for some, but others not so much. For me, I travel to various Catholic Churches around the country on weekends, I normally leave early Saturday mornings and return late Sunday evenings. When I get on a plane my main focus is the scripture readings for the weekend which I preach on, and when I get on the plane to come home, I’m tired and keep to myself and just rest. So you could say my cardinal rule on flying, is to keep to myself, think, pray and rest.

Pretty selfish, isn’t it? It’s not some-thing I’m proud of, but I suspect many of us do this all the time. Here’s the rub: Didn’t Jesus say we should love our neighbor as ourself? (Matthew 2:34-36) I have to admit, this is my struggle each time I’m on a plane, and my prayer reflects it, but because I’m in a routine change is hard.

In our Gospel we see a rich man with many possessions, run up to Jesus, kneel down before him, and ask, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

What Must I Do To Inherit Eternal Life? Did you catch that? Isn’t that totally human? It’s not all about me; I’m not the center of the universe. What about the next person, but when we’re so busy taking care of our needs and desires; we often ignore those around us, like me on the airplane.

There was this one time (actually more than once) when I was on a return flight home, it was late, and the door was about to be closed, when a woman rushes on and sits in the seat next to me. She was hurried, exhausted, and crying. I violated my rule and I asked if she is okay.

Between the tears, and her telling her story the plane ride to the next airport was consumed with her painful and sad story. I listened and gave her my undivided attention. It was a long flight and near the end of our conversation, I asked if she trusted me with her mailing address. We exchanged addresses, and I mailed several Catholic items and materials to her. I don’t remember the entire conversation, but I do remember that she was relaxed and grateful. The following day I mailed her a package and didn’t think about her after that, except an occasional prayer for her. To this day, I still get Christmas cards with a note attached.

Here’s the point; that rich man in our Gospel did all the right things, even kept all the commandments, and he thought he deserves eternal life because of it. But he forgot one thing; we can’t earn our way into heaven. We have to ‘love or neighbor’ and allow that love to be lived out each day, and know that when we do this, we will have treasure waiting for us in heaven.

Rest in Peace

Jim Keuler, son of Al and Jan Keuler, recently passed away in his hometown of Savannah, Georgia. The parish will be praying a Memorial Mass in his memory on Tuesday, October 12, beginning at 11:00 a.m. May he rest in peace. And may his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Sharing Their Story On October 20th our high school students and senior parishioners (those around the age of 80 and above) will be gathering to share their stories! The high schoolers be interviewing the older parishioners and then we will be compiling a book highlighting our seniors. Keep an eye out for the book to be showcased in mid to late November.

Memorial Scroll Traditionally in the Catholic faith, November is considered the month of Poor Souls. During this time, we pray especially for those in our families who have died. We pray that they may now enjoy eternal happiness with God in heaven. During the month of November we would like to remember in a special way those from our parish who have died since November 2020. If you lost a loved one this past year and would like their name included on the scroll, even if they were not a member of our parish, please provide the name to Kim in the parish office by noon on Monday, October 25. The memorial scroll will be up for the entire month of November.

Free

We have a used refrigerator that would be great for a basement or garage. Please contact Kim if you’re interested in it.

Collection for Hurricane Ida Relief Last week we had a second collection for Hurricane Ida Relief. Hurricane Ida struck the Louisiana area and then turned and flooded parts of the Northeast US. This collection will support the USCCB Bishop’s Emergency Disaster Fund. Envelopes are available at the side entrances and in the narthex. Please return envelopes by October 17.

SCRIP Planning on making a large purchase? Hunting equipment at Cabela’s? Snow blower from Menards? Flooring from Home Depot? Why not use $crip to pay the bill? Let us know in advance so we can be sure to have enough in stock for you.

Special Donations

Our new missalette book cart in the narthex and two hanging shelves at the side entrances of church were generously donated in memory of Reed Kleinhans.

The choir also has a new piano keyboard because of a very generous anonymous donation from a parish family.

Let’s sing our praises to our generous and loving Father. Thank you to both families for their incredible generosity!
