August 31, 2014 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

PASTOR’S POTPOURRI JEREMIAH THE PROPHET AND OUR CALL TO BE PROPHETS Jeramiah, like all the prophets, was ridiculed and made to seem unsuccessful. That is why he says that the Lord se-duced him because of all the people who would not listen to his warnings. He decided to quit…but he could not do it. The power of the Word of God was so strong that he says he could not not speak the Lord’s Word to the people, even if they rejected him and the Word. This was his vocation.

The late biblical scholar, Father Bruce Vawter defined a prophet this way: “Prophets are the conscience of the peo-ple.” Another man by the name of Hans Walter Wolff said, “Prophets are the people in the community who provide us with the future implications of our present actions.” Both these statements overlap. Prophets are always the community’s reformers. St. Paul would say in 1 Corinthians 14: “Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the spiritual gifts, above all that you may prophesy.”

Biblical prophets constantly remind their audiences to “return to the Lord”… to relate to God, not to an institution, nor to a set of rules and regulations or to an authority structure. God’s people are expected to go one on one with the Holy One: the essential force in their daily lives.

Yet, as Jeramiah graphically points out, strange and disturbing things happen to those who dare to relate to that supreme Other One. May the Lord give us the inspiration and courage to be prophets, despite the cost. (Excepts from CELEBRATION, August 31, 2014) Msgr. Bob

Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time What profit would there be if you gained the whole world, yet forfeited your life? That’s not a question we in the west take very seriously.

We can’t imagine what the Christians in Mosul have to face every day, but maybe we should make ourselves imagine it. Christians have been the target of 80 percent of all religious discrimination in 139 countries around the world. Attacks on

Christians jumped 309 percent in seven years, and more than 100 million have been persecuted. Since the time of Jesus, the world has seen 70 million Christian martyrs, and fully 50 percent of those have lived in the 20th century.

It’s hard to get an accurate count of the martyrs of this century, and certainly the events in Mosul will take those numbers to, in the words evocative of our country’s own terror 13 years ago, more than we can bear. A conservative number is between seven and eight thousand yearly. John Allen, author of The Global War on Christians, writes “Two thirds of the 2.3 billion Christians in the world today live…in dangerous neighborhoods. They are often poor. They often belong to ethnic, linguistic and cultural minorities. And they are often at risk. That point is more important than being precise about the death toll.”

In 1999, Columbine shooting survivor Val Schnurr had already been shot when her madman assailant asked if she believed in God. She said “yes,” and by some miracle was not killed. Answering “yes” to that question in over 50 countries today can get you killed, with, in a world increasingly “tolerant,” no questions asked. We must bear witness. The prophet Jeremiah compels us. Kathy McGovern ©2014 www.thestoryandyou.com A SECOND COLLECTION will be held at Beaver Creek the weekend of September 7th for Catholic University of America in Washington

D.C. The CUA national collection provides funding for academic scholarships. Established in 1887, it is the only institution of higher education founded by the U.S. bishops. Students are enrolled from all 50 states and almost 100 countries. At St. Clare and St. Mary’s we will take portion of our tithe to contribute to this collection. Thank you for your generosity.

Catholic Schools

Believe in a Higher Standard!

Catholic schools are known for their high level of academic achievement and high graduation rates. As a group, Catholic school students score above average on national academic tests. Nationally, 99.1 percent of students at Catholic high schools graduate. Of these graduates, 84.7 percent go on to college, compared to 44.1 percent of public school graduates. Catholic schools provide an education that goes beyond preparation for a secular life. They produce students dedicated to their faith, values, families and communities by providing an intellectually stimulating environment rich in spiritual and moral development. Commitment to service is a core value of Catholic schools. Catholic students learn service – giving their time, talents and effort to help others – both as an ex-pression of faith and good citizenship.
