Dear Fathers of our parish,

There once was a day when many TV viewers had examples of fatherhood. Remember “Father Knows Best (1954-1960)?” Children appreciate a strong father figure to lead them in their formative years. The result is that they become confident young adults and are secure in the person God made them to be. As there are single moms, there are single TV dads working hard to put bread on the table while also trying to be present to their children. Recall Fred McMurray in “My Three Sons (1960–1972).” Over time, television approached the topic of a widowed dad falling in love and dating, such as in “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (1969-1972).” Or dads in a second marriage after widowhood, such as in “The Brady Bunch (1969-1974).” How many youth hoped for a wise and kind dad as featured on “The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968).” As TV dads had varied lives, so do we come from families having to deal with colored circumstances.

I know this sounds silly, but many of us were formed by the TV Dads of the past 50 years. Some were goofy, some were wonderful. But, the truth be told--- many characters were pretty good guys. After we put them all together, they might begin to form a composite of who our dads really are: Very human men who never took a class on how to be a father trying to lead their children in a rapidly changing world. They simply did the best they could. Our dads, (with few exceptions) were wonderful godly men who sacrificed much of their time and effort to provide for us.

This weekend is Father’s Day in the United States. The very best role model of a father is, without a doubt, the Heavenly Father. The influence of TV dads lasts only the length of our life time. But when a man becomes a dad after the heart of the Eternal Father, God can make an permanent difference in the hearts and souls of their children.

My hope is that your dad (or your step-dad, foster father, uncle, etc.) is given the due honor he deserves today. It’s not about a new tie or a silly tee-shirt. It’s about us appreciating real authentic manly and humble love. God bless you dad--- we love you!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Father Mark

-- A Special Note to All Fathers

THIS WEEK: NO DAILY MASSES due to Emmaus Convocation Please mark your calendars to pray for Father Hoffman as he attends the annual Emmaus Convocation for Priests next week. Emmaus is a wonderful time for the priests to gather for prayer, updates in theology and policy, and simply be together as brothers. With most priests running at break-neck speed to attend to multiple assignments, this is one of the few times they can actually be together. Please be aware that while there will be no Masses offered at Mt. Calvary or St. Mark’s next week, daily Mass will be offered at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, Monday thru Friday, 8:30am. Our parishioners are warmly welcome. Final Call: Help Wanted for Care of Linens Father Hoffman has been looking for a Mt. Calvary parishioner to take on the Altar Linen Ministry at Mt. Calvary Parish. If we don’t hear from you this week, a call will be opened to parishioners from either parish. This is a ministry for a person who enjoys “behind the scenes” tasks. She or he will be instructed by Father in the care of linens, which usually involves laundering the linens about every two weeks. To offer to be a steward for this ministry, please call the parish office at 899-3000. Thank you, and God Bless you! ATTENTION YOUTH grades 3-11 Father Hoffman is now enlisting young people from our parish, grades 3 thru 11 to be trained to be altar servers, readers and junior ushers to serve at either of our two parishes. Youth who are registered in either parish should have receive a personal letter from Father. Those who have served in the past have really enjoyed it, and have seen this as a great privilege to be so close to Jesus. If you are a parent of a young one, please encourage them to get involved. Involvement in our younger years promotes youth to become life-long and practicing Catholic adults. Please let Father know by contacting the parish office before June 25th. Give it a try! You will build a wonderful memory.

Baptisms: It is our policy to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism with the parish community at any of the weekend liturgies. Parents are requested to attend a class prior to the baby’s baptism. Godparents are encouraged to attend. Please contact the office to make arrangements.

Marriages: Diocesan Common Policy requests six months advance notification of the priest and attendance at Pre-Cana Instructions or Engagement Encounter. Please contact the office to make arrangements.

Anointing of the Sick: Anytime. A person need not be dying, but simply sick from a serious illness or even weak due to old age. Those wishing to be anointed, please contact the office.

Communion to the Sick: For visits and/or Communion calls to the sick, shut-ins and those confined to hospitals, please notify the rectory.

Parish Membership: Please fill out the form found inside this bulletin and we will mail you a registration form. All those who are out of high school should register individually. Parish membership is required to be a sponsor for Baptism.

Family Perspective: Parenting is a Eucharistic activity because from the first moment of conception children receive life from us. If we don’t sacrifice ourselves, our children would not have life. This is the paschal mystery of parenting. Christ is present in each self-sacrifice.

Marriage Moments: Think of how your life honors your father. Also acknowledge the fathers who come by their role indirectly (foster and adoptive fathers, fathers-in-law, stepfathers, and those who have been like a father to you.) Honor an honorary father this week.
