A very real sign of the kingdom spreading its branches into every part of our reality is when we gather together to follow Jesus instruction that we break the bread (which he nominates as his Body), and share the cup (which he likens to his ‘blood poured out for us’) and he tells us to do this “in Memory of Me”. Whenever this happens we are no longer in exile but are in communion with our Saviour and with one another in a bond of love that can never be broken. Jesus becomes present to us in such a way that a bond of intimacy is formed in a very real and immediate way whenever we re- enact the story of the last supper. Just like the mustard seed which grows into a large shrub we become part of the kingdom which spreads into the world offering shelter and solace to all who are in need. This very special moment will be true for a number of children over the next few weekends as they come forward to make their first communion and to say Amen (yes) to the overture of Christ to enter into their hearts in this sacramental way. It is an encounter with our God that is entirely personal and individual and it marks the beginning of a relationship that will from now on be their support at every stage of their life’s journey. As St. Paul tells us, we will no longer be exiled in the body because we have made our home with the Lord – and this is something you somehow haven’t to deserve.

IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

The Catholic Community of North Harbour

For those of us struggling to make our way through life toward the fullness of the reign of God, perspective is everything. Stories from the past, and faith and hope in the future, help us to live in the present. It has always been this way for God’s people. Like them, “we walk by faith, and not by sight.” Though we cannot see the future, it is enough. We continue to plant our seeds, make our plans, and move forward toward the harvest.

C ongratulations to all the children and a warm welcome to their extended family and friends. After the weeks of preparation in their Family Home Groups the children will celebrate their First Communion this weekend and the following 2 weekends at the following Masses: Saturdays 5.30pm at St

Kieran’s Sundays 9am at St Cecilia’s and Sundays 9.30am at St Kieran’s. Seats will be reserved at all these Masses for the children, their families and guests.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, When I was studying American literature in the 1960’s a poem by Robert Frost (who was still alive at the time) touched the hearts of many for its depiction of an old farm hand called Silas who returns to his place of employment even though he had left on bad terms with the

boss who does not particularly want him back. The farmer’s wife realises that the old man has really come home to die. They are the nearest thing to a family that the old man ever had, so they have little alternative but to give him shelter. As she tells her husband, ‘home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in’. To which he replies: ‘I should have called it something you somehow haven’t to deserve’.

St. Paul in his Second letter to the Church at Corinth reflects on the death that he feels is approaching him. He speaks of himself as being in a state of exile. He sees every one of us as being like the Israelites being sent into exile and he wants to give us the same message of hope they kept in the life-restoring power of God. For Paul, Death carries with it a distinct experience of exile – exile from the body and a return to the heavenly home which he might just as easily choose to name as ‘something you somehow haven’t to deserve’. A symbol of this ‘undeserved’ home is found in the image of the mustard seed growing into the largest

shrub in the garden so the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.

Jesus becomes present to us in such a way that a bond of intimacy is formed in a very real and immediate way whenever we re-enact the story of the last supper.
