December 13, 2015 Third Sunday of Advent Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
I hope your observance of Advent is providing you with some spiritual solace amidst all the problems in our world and all the frenzy that is part of this holiday time of year. Our Lord Jesus Christ is often called the Prince of Peace. Let us ask His guidance for our anxious world. Let us also seek a few moments of quiet each day to pray the famous Maranatha prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus! Come!” I pray that each of us will have some glimmer of God’s peace this year.
I hope you can hear the subject I am about to announce with an open heart. We, along with every parish in the Archdiocese of Newark, will be participating in a major Capital Campaign to strengthen our Church, both locally and diocesan-wide. The Campaign hopes to collect 90 million dollars in the Archdiocese, of which OLMC is asked to raise $772,000. If successful, about $350,000 will come back to us for our own parish needs and mission.
At all Masses this weekend, I will be asking for a very specific first step of help. We need to recruit about 50 volunteers who will help our parish conduct this campaign in the first four months of 2016. So far, your fellow parishioners, Chris Connolly, Rosemary Russell and Benedetta Watros, have agreed to be part of the leadership team that will guide us through each step of the Campaign. My thanks to them!
Let me repeat: We are in a spiritual time of grace and into a much-needed Year of Mercy. May God’s grace and mercy abide in all our hearts. In addition, if you have any feedback or questions about this matter or anything else pertaining to our life together at Mount Carmel, please pass it on. Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
fr. Dan
Join us on Wednesday, December 23
5:30 a.m. in the church for La Misa de Gallo,
also known as the Mass of the Rooster.
Many parishes celebrate for nine straight mornings this favorite Filipino devotion in anticipation of Christmas. We will have one Mass on December 23rd because school is recessed for Christmas and we can use the school cafeteria for hospitality after the Mass. The Mass will be said in Tagalog.
Please consider joining us! Pass the word that we are trying this beautiful tradition here at Mount Carmel. Those who would like to help with the planning should speak to Fr. Dan.
Our parish family is blessed to have had the witness and the loving service of many religious sisters over the years. On Sunday, December 20th at the 10 AM Family Mass we will say special thanks to three of those religious women who have served us most recently: Sister Regina Chassar, SSJ has been our Director of Religious Education for 18 years; Sister Nora Lohan, MFIC has been Principal of our school and Director of Pastoral Ministry for more than 10 years here at OLMC; Sister Mary Kelly, SSND regularly worships with us and tutors Academy children. Please join us on December 20th to say thanks to each of them and at hospitality afterwards.
December 20th is also the chosen date for the second collection for retired religious. We will have special offering envelopes available if you wish to make a donation to the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, the Missionary Sisters of Saint Francis, or the School Sisters of Notre Dame in appreciation for what our sisters have done for our community and the children of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Let’s say “Yes, Sister” one more time!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)
In the early Church, when a person sought to become Christian, he or she entered into a period of intense instruction within the community. When this period of instruction was completed, the person was baptized and received into “the body of the faithful.” The Church welcomes into the process of preparation persons who have never been baptized, those already baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation. For information about the process, please call Sr. Regina at 201-871-4662.
