In these summer days, I offer for your reflection, the
Examen of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the
Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). The Examen is a
method of reviewing your day in the presence of God.
It’s actually an attitude more than a method, a time set
aside for thankful reflection on where God is in our
everyday life. The Examen has five steps, which most
people take more or less in order. In total, this
method or process for prayer takes about fifteen or
twenty minutes to complete. I hope you find this brief
daily meditation helpful in your own prayer life.
The Examen
Ask God for light.
I want to look at my day with God’s eyes, not merely
my own
Give thanks.
The day I have just lived is a gift from God. Be grate-
ful for it.
Review the day.
I carefully look back on the day just completed, being
guided by the Holy Spirit.
Face your shortcomings.
I face up to what is wrong – in my life and in me.
Look forward to the day to come.
I ask where I need God in the day to come.
As noted for the past few weeks, we have begun merg-
ing the three parish offices into one operation. This
has been done for a number of reasons, namely, effi-
ciency, ease, and economics. It makes sense not to
repeat tasks or positions three times when it can be
done once, for all. A centralized location is much eas-
ier for the staff and for the parishioners. One parish
office operation is also good stewardship of financial
resources.
Beginning Monday, August 19, all parish business for
Saint Louis de France, Saint Patrick, and Saint Tho-
mas More will be conducted from the new parish of-
fice site at 386 Luther Avenue, Somerset, MA. (the
rectory building for Saint Thomas More Parish). All
sacramental records, financials, and calendars are now
located here. To schedule a Mass in any of the three
churches, obtain sacramental records, schedule bap-
tism or marriage in any of the three churches,
