First Sunday of Lent page two

My Dear Friends, Without a doubt, Lent is the most demanding me of the year for the true disciple of Christ. Lent provides us an opportunity not only to intensify our spiritual prac ces, but this peniten al season also gives us a unique opportunity to reflect deeply on the progress of our journey towards eternal life. Saint Paul reminds us that our entrance into Heaven is not a guaranteed reality when he writes, "Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall" (1 Cor. 10: 12). Lent is a me for seriously ques oning ourselves about our rela onship with God. We might ask whether there are any par cular sins or a achments that might prove to be obstacles to our achieving eternal salva-

on. (Excerpted from a wri ng by Father James Farfaglia, Catholic Online) A serious Lent is not only like a spring cleaning in which we cleanse our souls of the clu er that has been ac-cumula ng there, it is also a me when changes in the way we live our lives may be in order. The Season of Lent began with Ash Wednesday on March 6th. The celebra on of Ash Wednesday probably dates back to the Eighth Century. The symbol of ashes reminds us of our mortality: "remember man you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:19) The ashes serve as a biblical symbol of repentance and call us to reflect on the need of humility. (2 Samuel 13:19) We hear in the Gospel of Luke about Jesus' interac on with fishermen. He commands Simon Peter to "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch” (Luke 4:5). We are ac ve agents in the work of evange-liza on, and like Simon Peter, our call of discipleship makes us "fishers of men.” We too are asked to lower our "nets" to help others come to know and love Jesus. Lent is a me of conversion and renewal, a me for us to "repent, and believe in the Gospel" (Mark 1:15). Catholic families have a great opportunity to share with their children both growing and grown, a beauty that is found in the Lenten Season. With Lent, each year we are given a me to draw nearer to God and to purge that which burdens us and prevents us from rejoicing in our salva on. Like Advent, there can also be an cipa on built in all our hearts, knowing that Easter Sunday, the feast where we remember the Resurrec on, will soon be here. During Lent, we are given the tools of almsgiving, fas ng, and prayer to keep us on task and to help us stay on course. I pray that all of us will be able to embrace this Lent with open hearts. Let this special liturgical season be a me for our whole parish community to answer the call of re-newal and draw us closer to God. Prayerfully, Father Patrick V. Kirsch KHS Pastor

CATHOLICISM EXPLAINED

CATHOLIC QUESTION:

Why do we make the sign of the cross?

CATHOLIC ANSWER:

Our Lord's death sanctified (made holy) the symbol of the cross. The cross went from being regarded as an instrument of shame, to the symbol of Jesus' triumph and victory over sin and death and a sign of our faith in Him. That is why we make the sign of the cross. If done with reverence and thought, the sign of the cross is a protection from the powers of Satan and a reminder of the power of our Faith. "In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”, proclaims for all to see, our belief in the Trinity and the Unity of God in three persons. The touching of the forehead is to show that the Son proceeds from the Father, and that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son is signified by touching the heart and the two shoulders; while the form of the cross reminds us of our redemption by Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Make the sign of the cross devoutly. It is one of the greatest sacramentals of the Church.
