Gospel Reflection - John 14: 15-21

This passage continues Jesus’ offer of comfort to his disciples. He is in the middle of breaking the unwelcome news that they will soon be without him. The disciples are burdened by this revelation. They now expect not the delights of victory but the bewilderment of loss. Such knowledge heightens their awareness of the depth of affection that has developed. They have become unimaginably close to the one who called them on this incredible journey. And Jesus dares to name this response as ‘love’. As Jesus crafts these final instructions he builds on these deep, strong emotions. The obedience this nurtures will become the foundation from which God’s mission will rise. ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments’ and, they ‘who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me’ bookend our passage. Until now there has been little talk of a continued presence. Jesus uses the language of absence and going. Only now does he begin to talk also of a coming. There will soon be an ‘Advocate’. Sometimes we are tempted to talk of the Holy Spirit apart from Jesus. Of course, if we are faithful trinitarians, we could never do this openly or directly. But we still do it. For some the Spirit of God sits best in the too-hard-basket. We may associate this Spirit with something less comfortable than the familiar ways of Jesus. Of course we can just as easily go the other way. The Holy Spirit can become the only way God is revealed. The Spirit can dominate our perceptions of God and overshadow the life of Jesus. It amounts to another form of the same separation. Perhaps this pendulum is not such a disaster. Indeed we learn not by maintaining perfect balance but by getting off balance. If the twelve disciples are an example of anything it is the art of making mistakes while journeying alongside God.

Mark Beresford

Today we stand in footsteps millennia old. May we acknowledge the Elders, families and forebears of the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri tribes of the

Kulin Nations, who are the traditional custodians of our parish land, whose cultures and customs have nurtured, and continue to nurture, this land since men and women awoke from the great dream. We honour the presence of

these ancestors who reside in the imagination of this land and whose irrepressible spirituality flow through all creation.

Pentecost, the birthday of the church, is in two weeks time (3rd/4th June). One of the ways of recognising the diversity and gift of the universal church is through the many languages that are spoken. At all the masses on Pentecost weekend, we will invite as many people as possible to share in the final prayer and dismissal, by coming forward to proclaim in another language: "May the Holy Spirit send you forth to renew our world". If you can share this in YOUR language - French, Italian, Croatian, Gaelic, Sinhalese, Filipino/Tagalog, Portuguese, Malay, Hindi, Chinese, Maltese, Arabic, Spanish or another, please be prepared to come up and do so at mass that weekend. Thank you!!! AND we invite you to wear RED to mass - or a splash of red! The colour of Pentecost, the colour of the Holy Spirit.

PARISH PASTA NIGHT Despite the cold evening outside, there was a lot of warmth and joy in our Parish Hall (last Saturday night), and it was great to see parishioners from both Elwood and St Kilda, from the school as well as staff from SH Mission, and friends, all mingling and enjoying a very nice plate of gnocchi, a slice of home made cake and each others company : ) A big thank you to all of you who helped in promoting the event, selling tickets, setting up, cooking, serving and cleaning up !!! I received lots of positive comments from people as they were leaving, my only disappointment was that only Mairead and I were dancing the tarantella in the school hall. Here are some numbers from the night: - 74 people attended (including 8 kids) - $370 was raised for 'Dine with Heart' - which was the entrance fee - which equates to 93 nutritious meals at SHM - $780 was raised for the parish - from the sale of the gnocchi and desserts Carlo Marcon A very big thank you to Adrian Cropley and Carlo Marcon for all their work in making the night such a wonderful event. Thank you also to Danny from Danny’s Pasta for his generosity and expertise.

MELBOURNE CATHOLIC The May edition is on sale on the back of church. It features some worthwhile articles on Chaplains in youth detention and on motherhood. Please leave the $4 at the piety stall or in the collection basket.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLICS The Winter edition is available (free) at the back of church. In this edition, we celebrate some of the extraordinary women that inspire and shape our faith. Of course, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is one of the most influential, but there are many other women who have shaped our faith over the centuries and continue to do so today, holding leadership roles in our Church and society. Women bring great gifts to our schools, parishes and other ministries.
