Words of Wisdom from Pope Francis Easter brings us this message: the message of rebirth.

We can be reborn with the same strength that raised up the Lord: with the strength of God.

At times in life we distance ourselves from the Lord and lose the freshness of the first call. Let us ask for the grace to always go back to that first encounter, in which He looked at us, spoke to us, and placed in us the desire to follow Him.

What patience the Lord has with each of us! He respects our situation, walks at our side as He did with the disciples of Emmaus, and listens to our dissatisfactions. He respects us. He enjoys listening to how we speak so as to understand us well and give us the correct response.

Contemplating together the face of Christ with the heart of Mary, as we pray the rosary, will make us more united as a spiritual family and will help us to overcome this trial. I will pray for you, especially for those who are suffering the most. Please, pray for me.

My dear parishioners,

"Voice recognition" is not the wave of the future. It is now. There is technology and gadgetry in our homes that listen to the command of a human voice and respond appropriately, doing what it is asked to do. Lights go on or off, alarm systems are set, television channels are changed, music selections are made. All at the sound of a voice.

Wouldn't every parent wish for that kind of obedience from their teenage son or daughter? Doesn't every spouse hope for that kind of response from their mate? Doesn't the boss expect that from their employees? Wouldn't the preacher long for the same?

Voice recognition begins with hearing. It calls for careful listening. And under any normal circumstance requires a response.

The image of sheep following the shepherd in today's Gospel is based on voice recognition. The sheep willingly follow because they have come to recognize the familiar voice of one who has their best interest at heart. The shepherd will lead them along the right path. “He guides me in right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage” (Psalm 23: 3-4).

Dears sisters and brothers, I propose that we need to practice the kind of voice recognition that connects us to Jesus Christ. He is the Good Shepherd and we need to hear his voice ... listen to his voice ... and respond to what he has to say.

In the pandemic of our day many voices are competing for our attention. Many messages are disturbing our thoughts. We are bombarded with reports, opinions, foolish ideas. We are continually trying to sort out fact from fiction.

When the disciples were troubled, caught in fear, anxiety and uncertainty, Jesus reassured them with his words: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14: 6).

In the trouble of our times that has provoked fear, anxiety and uncertainty, we need "voice recognition." We really do need to hear and listen and respond in altogether new ways to the voice and message of Jesus Christ. It is he who leads us along the reveals the TRUTH ... and promises LIFE beyond this life.

My friends, may the Lord bless you and all those

you love. Let us continue to pray for each other.

The May 12-13, 2020 LAV Sight and Sound and Padre Pio Tour has been postponed to October 20-21, 2020. Those who have submitted checks for reservations and balance due will be contacted as to whether they would like their checks returned or to hold their reservations for the October trip. For more information, contact Ruthie Gee at 412-828-4718.

Lighting Vigil Candles: If you would like to have a vigil candle(s) lit in one of the churches of our parish grouping, you may mail that request to the parish office. Please include your name, the intention, the name of the church in which you want the candle lit, and the $3.00 donation for each candle. The candles will be lit in the church of your choosing: Saint Francis of Assisi in Harmar, Saint Edward in Blawnox, Saint Scholastica in Aspinwall, Madonna of Jerusalem in Sharpsburg, Saint Mary in Sharpsburg, or Saint Joseph in O'Hara.

Daily Mass Intentions: During these days of church closures the three priests of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes continue to offer Mass each day in the churches where they live. Father Dale DeNinno in Saint Joseph

Church, Father Mike Decewicz in Madonna of Jerusalem Church, and Fr. Bill Siple in Saint Scholastica Church. At each Mass they are honoring the intentions that have already been scheduled. However, there are many open dates, particularly in Saint Joseph Church. Requests for Mass Intentions and the $10 stipend may be mailed to the parish office or you may choose to call the office. If no one answers, please leave your name and telephone number and someone will return your call.

A letter from Father Dale to families of 2nd and 8th graders in our Faith Formation program:

In a world upside down with closures, postponements, and cancellations, the Church and our Catholic faith have been dramatically affected. We are unable to engage in public worship in order to be fed with the Word and Sacrament of Jesus Christ. I hear all the time of how much people miss being at Mass. Perhaps it is that spiritual longing which now must be our nourishment. Until the day when we can gather again….

To that end I know that you are anxious to hear any word about the celebration of the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation for your child(ren). After consulting with Mrs. Delia Barr, the Director of Faith Formation, as well as the other members of the parish staff, and in conversation with diocesan staff who serve the Office of the Bishop, I am prepared to share the decision that the sacraments will be celebrated as follows:

First Holy Communion:

Sunday – September 27, 2020 at the 12:00 Noon Mass in Saint Scholastica Church

OR

Sunday – September 27, 2020 at a 3:00 pm Mass in Saint Joseph Church

Confirmation:

Monday – September 21, 2020 at 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph Church

I hope you will understand the challenge of reaching this decision. With so much uncertainty I am taking a chance that late September will be a suitable time. It’s a full five months away. This, of course, is subject to change.

What you may have planned for a party celebration of your child’s special day may also change in its scope. Let the focus be on the sacrament. What greater gift could there be?

Please be assured of a remembrance in my prayers, especially when I stand at the altar in the celebration of Mass. May God be your strength. May the Lord bless you and all those you love.

A letter from Meredith Troyan to the Appalachian Mission team and the parishioners of the LAV:

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that, due to the coronavirus and its impact on our country, the decision has been made to cancel the Mission Trip for June of 2020. This decision was made in consultation with our pastor, Fr. Dale DeNinno, as well as the other members of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes staff members. In addition, we are following the advice of a domestic and international organization called GROUP that oversees missions trips and has postponed all of them for the remainder of the year.

All money for the 2020 Appalachia Mission Trip that was collected through fundraising and donations will remain in the bank and be available for use next year. We greatly appreciate the support of our families and members who make this trip possible.

I am very sad to see this happen, but the health and well-being of the students and chaperones is my first priority. I wouldn’t do anything to put them in danger.

Please know you are all in my prayers at this time. We will gather again soon. God bless all of you.

ADDICTION RECOVERY MINISTRY NEWS

412-218-5410 [email protected] addictionrecoveryministrypittsburgh.org

“Fake it ‘til you make it”

This is an often-used phrase among those in 12-step recovery and it can, at least at first glance, seem rather cynical and crass. But I think if we ponder this phrase for a while, we will not only see wisdom in it, but also an expression of a very keen sense of human reality and relationship.

I don’t know if you have ever been the new kid in school, but if you have, you will remember how horrible that first day in a new school was like. You didn’t know anybody; everything was different. You didn’t have any friends and you had to navigate your way to survive and hopefully thrive in this new environment. Often the only way you could do that is by “faking it,” pretending to others and yourself that you were not afraid; that you did understand this new environment even though you were both lonely and terrified inside. But then the more time passed and you began to form some friendships, you really did fit in; you belonged! In other words, you faked it until you made it.

In a sense, we often need to act ourselves into understanding ourselves. You see, when we are broken, we don’t know ourselves and we need to grow into ourselves. Recovery is becoming ourselves. Often this takes place in the midst of despair, depression, loneliness and shame. The wounds need time to heal. To enter into the journey of recovery, we need to be willing to live with ambiguity.

Faking it until making it means being physically present even before you are able to be actually, honestly, and authentically present. You see, the presence of God is not the elimination of pain. Rather, God’s presence allows us to at least fake it in the hope that we will make it to the journey of recovery so that we can be happy, joyous and free.

Now, how does all of this apply to our current situation of isolation in the midst of the Covid-19 Virus? Living in the midst of ambiguity and fear and being powerless over this reality means, at times, we just have to fake it ‘til you make it so that we can get through this moment of fear, boredom and loneliness and with God’s grace we can “make it” through this time of ambiguity so as to dwell in the certainty of God’s love.

FAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT!!!

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,

Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children.

We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,

as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother,

and gain for our nation and world,

and for all our families and loved ones,

the protection of the holy angels,

that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted,

we ask you to obtain the grace

of healing and deliverance.

Hear the cries of those

who are vulnerable and fearful.

Wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing,

teach all of us in the Church to love one another

and to be patient and kind.

Help us to bring the peace of Jesus

to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence,

knowing that you truly are

our compassionate Mother,

health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,

keep us in the embrace of your arms,

help us always to know the love

of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

A Prayer for Protection

In Time of Pandemic

O Mary, you always brighten our path

as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you,

health of the sick,

who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus' pain

while remaining steadfast in faith.

loving Mother, you know what we need,

and we are confident you will provide for us

as at Cana in Galilee.

Intercede for us with your Son Jesus,

the Divine Physician,

for those who have fallen ill,

for those who are vulnerable,

and for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with

protecting the health and safety of others

and for those who are tending to the sick

and seeking a cure.

Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father

and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who took upon himself our

sufferings and carried our sorrows,

so as to lead us, through the Cross,

to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection we seek refuge,

Holy Mother of God.

In our needs, despise not our petitions,

but deliver us always from all dangers,

glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
