A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Father Dale DeNinno
THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH
5
The Twelve Days of Christmas
From 1558 to 1829 the Catholic people in England
were not permitted to openly practice their faith. The
“Twelve Days of Christmas” was composed as a catechism
song for young Catholics, as well as for all the faithful to
remember some of the basic and beautiful central points of
our faith. The Christmas Carol has two meanings: the
surface meaning and a hidden meaning known only to
members of the Church.
Partridge in a pear tree - Jesus Christ. A partridge was
seen as a sort of dove, a pure bird, amongst fruit. Jesus is
the fruit of the womb.
Two turtle doves - The Old and New Testaments and also
was the gift Joseph presented in the temple.
Three French Hens - Faith, Hope and Love.
Four Calling Birds -The four Gospels of Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John.
Five Golden Rings -The Torah, the first five books of the
Bible on which the Jewish faith rested.
Six Geese-a-laying - The six days of creation.
Seven Swans-a-swimming - Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit:
wisdom, understanding, council, fortitude, knowledge,
piety and fear of the Lord.
Eight Maids-a-milking- The Eight Beatitudes are the
solemn blessings which mark the opening of the Sermon on
the Mount, the very first of Our Lord’s sermons in the
Gospel of Saint Matthew.
Nine ladies dancing - Nine gifts of the Holy Spirit: love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.
Ten lords-a-leaping -The Ten Commandments.
Eleven Pipers piping - The eleven faithful apostles.
Twelve drummers drumming - 12 points of belief in the
Creed; God the Father Almighty; Jesus Christ; Jesus was
conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary; Jesus
suffered, died and was buried; Jesus rose after descending
into hell; Jesus ascended into heaven; Jesus will come
again to judge; the Holy Spirit - Lord and giver of life; one,
holy catholic and apostolic Church; forgiveness of sins;
resurrection of the body; and life everlasting.

Saint Anthony School Program
and the
DePaul School for Hearing and
Speech
The Diocese of Pittsburgh is
home to two nationally recognized
educational programs for children
with special needs. Saint Anthony
School Programs provides an
inclusive education to children with
Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down
Syndrome, or other intellectual
disabilities in five elementary/
intermediate classrooms, secondary
classrooms, and one post-secondary
program at Duquesne University.
DePaul School provides
listening and spoken language (LSL)
education to children who are deaf or
hard of hearing, without the use of
sign language. Students learn to listen
and speak and successfully transition
to their neighborhood schools
alongside their peers with typical
hearing.
A second collection will be
taken in all of the churches in the
Diocese of Pittsburgh the weekend of
January 18-19, 2020. Your donation
will help both school programs to
further their goals of providing
quality educational opportunities for
their students. Your generosity is
greatly appreciated.
Faith Formation classes will resume the week of January 5. We will have a parent meeting
at the beginning of class during this week to discuss the Catholic Vision of Love program.
A note from Delia Barr: I wanted to share, without naming names, the different groups
of people who said YES to catechizing the youth of our parish grouping. They are all faith-
filled and humble servants.
Grandparents-Two sets! While helping catechize their grandchildren they are helping in the
classroom and in securing our halls and doors.
Grandmothers-Three total teaching in the classroom and one helping at the front door.
Moms of our students– 23! Moms who work outside the home, who stay at home, who are
teachers, who are pregnant, who are on my sub list that come when I need them!
Dads of our students- Three dads of our students who are another great example of faith-
filled families.
Moms and Dads- Two sets of moms and dads that share the teaching in a classroom. Now
that’s LOVE!
Teenagers- Four! Two of our classes are taught by high school students who want to share
their faith!
Church employee- One, she works in the church office all week and then also volunteers as a
catechist.
Parishioners– 17! Retired, young and single, young and married, those who have been
teaching since their children were in faith formation. A catechist who is battling breast
cancer and is still teaching. Some who volunteer in other areas of the parish but also take
time to catechize our children. Even a catechist from another parish grouping!
One husband, who is always there to serve. Fr. Dale says when he hired me he got two for
the price of one. He is the love of my life and I could not do this without his support.
All of these individuals said YES to serve. Each one of them I’m sure would tell you that
they get so much joy out of sharing their faith with our students. Please lift up these catechists
in your prayers. I believe with these servants sharing their faith, and their parents at home, our
youth will grow to be holy and loving children of God.
Teens, join us for an ugly Christmas sweater and Epiphany party on Sunday, January 5,
from 6-8 pm in the Saint Scholastica Ministry Center. Come dazzle us with your spectacular
holiday fashions! There will be a prize for the ugliest sweater. Bring a snack to share. Pizza
and pop provided.

Helpful thoughts from Al-Anon
I don’t have to understand everything. Some
things are not my business, and others will
simply never make sense to me.
I don’t have to be reluctant to show my
feelings. When I’m happy, I can give in to
it! When I’m not, I can turn to my Al-Anon
friends who help me to grow through the
tough times.
I don’t have to feel threatened by the future.
I can take life one day at a time.
I don’t have to feel guilty about the past.
With the help of the Steps, especially Eight
and Nine, I can make amends and learn from
the mistakes I have made.
I don’t have to feel alone. I can go to a
meeting, or pick up the phone–there is
always somebody to reach out to in Al-
Anon.
I don’t have to take responsibility for other
people’s choices. They have their own
Higher Power to help them make their
decisions.
I don’t have to give up on my hopes and
dreams – my Higher Power is not limited by
my lack of imagination.
