The Catholic Church Reforms Too

As Protestants ideas swept through northern Europe, Catholic leaders realized that people were unhappy with the clergy and with church policies. They looked for ways to restore peoples faith in the church.

Catholics were beginning to change to other religions. The Catholic church had to keep the people happy, so they made changes to keep the people from changing religions.

Protestantism started to become very popular in Europe.

Catholics from Spain wanted to stop it, they didn’t want Protestantism to enter Spain.

What is a Culture? Culture: The totality of socially

transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought.

Anything - religion, music, clothing, food, car clubs, etc. that unites a group of people.

In this case, it was a group of Catholic people who united.

The Growth of Roman Catholic Spain

The Catholic Church wanted all Jews, Protestants and Muslims out of Spain.

Does anyone remember which King and Queen ordered all Non-Christians to leave Spain or convert to Catholicism? Here’s a hint: They funded the trip to the New World.

The last city in Spain that surrendered to the Catholics in 1492 was named Granada. It was under Muslim control for about 700 Years.

The Spanish Inquisition

This was the name given to the forced expulsion of all Jewish people, Muslims and Protestants out of Spain.

The Spanish Inquisition was very popular in Spain.

Anyone who was thought to NOT be a Catholic was severely punished. They were tortured and killed.

Results of the Spanish Inquisition

As a result of the Spanish Inquisition, there were no people to protest the Catholic Church. That is why Protestants were not successful in Spain.

If you Protested the Catholic Church you would imprisoned, tortured or killed.

Catholic Reform

In 1534, a man named Ignatius of Loyola wanted to convert those who left Catholicism and stop Protestantism.

Ignatius created a society of people called Jesuits. Their job was to teach people about Catholicism in order for them not to become Protestants.

Jesuits: The Jesuits were a religious order created to serve the Pope and the Catholic church.

Ignatius of Loyola Ignatius of Loyola was a soldier who

was hurt in battle. He was sick for months and became very religious. He wanted to convert people to Catholicism.

He made his followers very disciplined like soldiers and he considered himself the general.

He believed that this would make the Jesuits better preachers and would stop the spread of Protestantism.
