Sympathy

The Chapel family expresses sympathy

to Barbara Fussell for the loss of her brother Bill Hutson. Bill passed away August 12th in Decatur, AL.

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.”

Psalm 145:3

One of the greatest blessings of the Father that we experience every week is corporate worship. What a joy it is to lift our hearts and voices to God. Every week we pray that through the power and pres-ence of the Holy Spirit, worship would truly be that of spirit and truth. The Bible reminds us that God seeks such a worshipper.

I have been reflecting upon some features of our worship that might seem perfunctory to some. I hope that’s not the case but I sup-pose it’s possible. I’m also reminded of the focus of worship in the 1st century church as described in Acts 2:42. It seems quite simple but “everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs per-formed by the apostles.” And then chapter 2 concludes with this in-credible description of the church, “And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Let me remind you of the significance of the three hymns we sing every Sunday. The first is called the hymn of praise. It is majestic and points to the greatness of the God whom we worship and serve. It expresses the voice of faith and triumph. It is our witness to the name that is above every name. Hopefully, we share the heart of the psalmist when he declared, “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and all that is in me praise His holy name.”

The second hymn (or chorus) is called the hymn of preparation. It is sung right before the reading and proclamation of the Word. We ask the Lord to prepare us to receive the truth and revelation of His word. We are asking, in faith, for the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon our hearts and minds. God seeks to communicate His truth. I want to be receptive. Remember---His truth is light and life.

The final hymn is called the hymn of invitation. Every worship service should draw us to some kind of decision. It’s God’s invitation, perhaps, for renewed faith. It may be for salvation. The Lord might invite someone to follow Him in a particular area of service. However

He leads us we want to be open and obedient.

Praise God for the gift of worship!

Blessings and peace,

Len
