“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Romans 8:28

In his classic devotional book, My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers declares, “I am sorry for the Christian who has not something in his circumstances he wishes was not there.” The first time I read that I scratched my head. Why would I or anyone want to have difficult or painful circumstances? I think I prefer the easy and simple path. Clear the way. Remove the thorny obstacles and let me proceed unhindered. Like you, I dis-covered life simply doesn’t work that way.

However, is there value in the most pressing challenges of life? Is there something we learn in the fire that we’ll never know in the cool comfort of ease and peace? What is the point Cham-bers is trying to get across? I think I have an idea.

In the various trials and difficult circumstances of life, we have the opportunity to see the hand of God at work. It’s seen through the eyes of faith but it’s as evident to the Christian as the sun on a cloudless day. It is the fresh and vibrant realization of the care and provision of the Father. It is the reminder that God is on your side. Did you hear me? God is on your side! Think of all the people throughout the history of the church who were lifted to a new level of faith when God stepped in. That person is never again the same.

The apostle Paul speaks of “all things” in Romans 8:28. Later on in the chapter, he enumerates some of those things. Death, life, angels, demons, trouble, hardship, and sword. That’s a pretty sobering list, isn’t it? But in it all, God works in redemp-tive and restorative power.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going around looking for trouble. But when that trouble comes——and it will——I get to see God work. And the blessings of His grace, power, and presence will transform life altogether. Thanks be unto God!

Blessings and peace,

Len
