The staff at the Center for Career Development welcome you to our annual Spring Job

Fair. We have over 90 employers in attendance who are seeking the “best of the best”

from Morgan State University. Be sure to review the profiles of the organization(s) that

you are interested in, along with career fair tips included in this directory to ensure you

make a great first impression. As you interact with the organizations, plan to discuss ca-

reer opportunities that will be available to you immediately.

If graduate or professional school is in your immediate future, consider discussing your

plans with the institutions that are represented.

You will also find Morgan State University alumni serving as representatives; be sure to

look for the orange ribbons on their name tags. Think about it, what better way is there to

enhance your own personal and professional development than to speak to individuals

who have “been there, done that?”

AT THE FAIR

1. Make a good first impression:

Arrive early; employers are at their peak and there is less competition.

Remember that first impressions count. Dress professionally. Wear comfortable shoes.

Carry as little as possible (avoid coats or backpacks, etc.); turn off cell phones and remove ear phones/buds.

Smile, make eye contact, and shake hands firmly and confidently. Introduce yourself with your full name, major, and graduation date.

Remember your body language…don't fidget or look around. Act interested, focused, and enthusiastic. Be friendly, assertive, mature, and sincere.

Don't ramble. Provide a concise, well-prepared overall view of what you have to offer their company and your career interests.

Ask at least 2 intelligent questions of each organization, about such topics as: company mission, client base, internship or co-op opportunities, summer or part-time employment, full-time career paths, trainee programs, hiring procedures, etc. Keep in mind that employers will expect that you have researched and will not want to answer questions that are easily available on their website. Note: Don’t just drop your résumé at the employer’s table. Try to get it into a recruiter’s hand. If you cannot speak to the recruiter, look for a business card to contact him/her at a later time.

2. Make things easier on yourself:

Network…while in line, talk to other students about recruiters they have spoken to already.

Speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard through the noise.

Bring 20+ copies of your résumé in a folder or portfolio, along with a pen and a pad. Be prepared to sell your skills and characteristics in person. Recruiters will remember their impression of you as much more than a résumé. Note: Many employers will direct you to apply online. If this is the case, know that the individual interactions that you have with the employer can be valuable as you will stand a better chance of being recognized when the recruiter reviews the online résumés later. Don’t get discouraged if the recruiter does not take your résumé. Use the time to make a positive impression and be memorable.

AFTER THE FAIR 3. Follow up with company representatives:

Organize company brochures and contact information so you can easily begin the process of following up with employers.

Mail or email a thank-you letter as soon as possible to each organization of interest to reinforce your good image, and include a copy of your résumé.

Approximately 2 weeks after mailing the letters, call the recruiter to confirm receipt of your letter and to express your continued interest in the company and desire for an interview.
