Writer’s Cramp by Joann Kocak

A Lesson for Today

Submitted by Edna Knoblauch;

~ Author unknown

What though death at times sets in

And takes our best away.

What though sorrow seems to win

Over hope in a heavy sway.

But hope again elastic swings

Unconquered though it fell.

Still glorious are hopes golden wings

Still strong to bear us well.

Manfully, fearlessly the day of trial bear

For gloriously, victoriously

Can courage quell despair.

Where has the summer gone? School sup-plies are out in every store, and families are out for the “back to school” necessi-ties. The writers have been busy writing as usual. This past month our topics have been: Be careful what you wish for; a memory of any kind of ballgame; a bowl-ing story; memories of marching bands; and write a poem or a short story about a subject of your own choosing. Quite a va-riety of subjects, and some interesting pieces written. We need more writers in our group; it is a fun bunch of people! We not only write, but we visit and have a lot of laughs. We meet every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Please come and join us! Coffee and treats available!

************************ Paying it Forward By Bev Anderson

It’s the small things— Helping the homeless,

Rescuing a bird, Helping a turtle cross the highway,

Leaving a big tip For the waitress

With holes in her shoes, Comforting a lost child—

Paying it forward One small act at a time;

Being grateful For my privileges.

Teachers always have stories to tell about their class-room adventures...below are a few stories about……

BACK to SCHOOL… “How do you spell toad?” one of my first-grade students asked. “We just read a story about a toad,” I said, then helped him spell it out: “T-O-A-D.” Satisfied, he fin-ished writing the story he’d begun, the read it aloud” “I toad mama I wanted a dog for my birthday.” Teacher: What is an evangelist? Student: Someone who plays the evangelo! Teacher: Why can’t freshwater fish live in salt water? Student: The salt would give them high blood pressure! Teacher: Mira went to the library at 5:15 and left at 6:45; how long was Mira at the library? Student: Not very long! Teacher: What do we call a group of stars that makes an imaginary picture in the sky? Student: A consternation! Teacher: List up to five good facts about Abraham Lin-coln. Student: After the war ended, Lincoln took his wife to a show!

******************** Walking through the hallways at our middle school, I saw a new substitute teacher standing outside his classroom with his forehead against a locker. I heard him mutter, “How did you get yourself into this?” Knowing he was assigned to a difficult class, I tried to offer moral support. “Are you okay?” I asked. “Can I help?” He lifted his head and replied, “I’ll be fine as soon as I get this kid out of his locker.” I recently ran into an old student of mine, who said, “I always liked you. You never had favorites. You were mean to everyone.” While reviewing math symbols with my second-grade pupils, I drew a greater-than (>) and a less-than (<) sign on the chalkboard and asked, “Does anyone remember what these mean?” A boy confidently raised his hand. “One means fast-forward and the other means rewind!”

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

My father began teaching business classes at the local prison through a community college. On his first night of class, he started a chapter on bank-ing. During the course of his lecture, the subject of ATMs came up, and he mentioned that, on average, most ma-chines contain only about $1,500 at a given time. Just then a man in the back raised his hand. “I’m not trying to be disrespect-ful,” he told my father, “but the ma-chine I robbed had about $5,000 in it.”

Overcoming Obstacles to Getting Active As You Age

Starting or maintaining a regular exercise routine can be a challenge at any age - and it doesn’t get any easier as you get older. You may feel discouraged by health problems, aches and pains, or concerns about injuries or falls. If you’ve never exercised before, you may not know where to begin, or per-haps you think you’re too old or frail, can never live up to the standards you set when you were younger. Or maybe you just think that exercise is boring! While these may seem like good reasons to slow down and take it easy as you age, they’re even better reasons to get moving. Becoming more active can energize your mood, relieve stress, help you manage symp-toms of illness and pain, and improve your overall sense of well-being. And reaping the rewards of exercise doesn’t have to involve strenuous workouts or trips to the gym. It is about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways. No matter your age or physical condition, it’s never too late to get your body moving, boost your health and outlook, and improve how you feel as you age.

KITCHEN KORNER By Joann Kocak

Does anyone remember Mr. Food? He had a TV cooking show and his trademark phrase was “Ooh it’s so good!!” As I was going through my recipe file, I came upon a rec-ipe put out by him dating back to 2006 for “Hummingbird Cake.” I haven’t made it in quite awhile, so despite the heat, I started up the oven and made this delicious cake. It serves 12-16, so I have been sharing with friends and neighbors. HUMMINGBIRD CAKE 1 pkg. (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix 1pkg (3.5 oz) vanilla instant pudding mix 1/2 C vegetable oil 1 can (8 oz) crushed pineapple, well drained with juice reserved 4 eggs 1 tsp cinnamon 1 medium-sized banana, cut up 1/2 C finely chopped pecans 1/4 C chopped maraschino cherries, well drained Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 10-inch Bundt pan generously with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine the cake and pudding mixes, the oil, pineapple, eggs, and cinnamon. Add enough water to the reserved pineapple juice to make 1 cup; add it to the bowl then beat with an electric beater until mixture I thor-oughly combined. Stir in the banana, pecans, and cherries; mix well then pour into the pan. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 20-25 minutes then invert onto a serving plate. Let cool completely. FROSTING (If desired) 1/3 C prepared cream cheese frosting In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the cream cheese frosting for 10-15 seconds. Stir until smooth and pourable; then drizzle over the cooled cake before slicing. YUMMY!
