Writer’s Cramp by Joann Kocak

The past month has been a busy one for the writers. We wrote about: “Ask me (whatever we like) and I will tell you”, A chance for us to get on our soapbox, make a list of our own “Seven Wonders of the World”, tell about a favorite or memorable Christ-mas event or party, and write a letter to someone expressing your personal feelings for that person. The writers also had our Christmas brunch at my house. We shared memo-ries of Christmas and Bev read the an-nual feature of the poem “A Senior Christmas” that always brings a chuck-le to the group, no matter how many times we have heard it. Nancy enter-tained us with a musical rendition of a song she had written, accompanying herself on an instrument that looks like a ukulele. She told me the name of it, but sorry to say, I have forgotten what it is! The writers group was started in 1995 by Prof. Francis Kazmarek, so 2019 will be the 24th year of existence of The Senior Class. I joined the class in 1999, so I will be beginning my 20th year with this fun group. I have met many people along the way, and I know I would never have met them had it not been for this group. I know it has been a fun time for me, and I hope that you readers will consider joining us in 2019. We meet at the Community Center every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Come for the fun!

The View From My Desk By Edna Knoblauch

I look out from my desk at the snow.

I’d rather see all my flowers grow.

Winters get harder as you get older.

It even seems the weather gets colder.

I wait to see if my mailman has come.

The trudge out there and get so numb.

Some days I might have some local news.

And sometimes all I have is bills that are due.

My association dues pay for hauling snow.

So out with a shovel I do not have to go.

Our snow person gets up before the dawn.

He pushes it all hither and yon.

Y garage stays warm even on cold days.

So starting my car makes no delays.

Cozy I’ve been here for all these long days.

Who Am I? By Joann Kocak

When I took this job ten years ago, I was new to the world of everyday life. I was hired as a “trouble shooter.” I was on call 24/7. That meant that I was first on the scene to take care of the situation and ba-sically clean up any faux pas committed by someone. I was young. I was excited. I did my job well and was given many awards for my loyalty, stability and over-all performance. But today I have failed in my duties. Ten years at the same job has taken a toll on me. I no longer get revved up to do my job. I am feeling sluggish, and I can no longer “suck it up.” Therefore, I tender my resignation. Signed, Ken More, Vacuum Cleaner.

Food for thought……

Today I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young lady walked over to me and asked, ‘What brings you in today?’ I looked at her and said, “I’m interested in buying a refrigera-tor.” She didn’t quite know how to respond. I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it. When people see a cat’s litter box they always say, “Oh, have you got a cat?” Just once I want to say, “No, it’s for company!” Employment application blanks always ask who is to be called in case of an emergency I think you should write, “An ambulance.” The older you get the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends. The easiest way to find something lost around the house it to buy a replacement. Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for for-ty (40) are XL? The sole purpose of a child’s middle name is so he can tell when he’s really in trouble! Did you ever notice that when you put the 2 words “The” and “IRS” together it spells “Theirs?” Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you top lying about your age and start bragging about it. Some people try to turn back their “odometers.” Not me. I want people to know why I look this way. I’ve traveled a long way and a lot of the roads were not paved. You know you are getting older when everything either dries up or leaks. Ah! Being young is beautiful but being old is com-fortable! Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth!

More Winter Humor….

Grandma’s been staring through the

window ever since it started to snow.

If it gets any worse, I guess I’ll have to

let her in!

What do you call a dollar bill frozen in

ice? Cold, hard cash!

What do you call a $1 ticket to the ice

rink? A cheap skate!

Did you hear about the ski trip? It

started out great, but it was all down-

hill from there!

I thought we were going sledding,

but we went skiing instead. You

might say I was mis-sled!

Relieving the Symptoms of Seasonal Depression

Winters can be very long in Minnesota and sometimes lead to seasonal depression. Be-low are a few things you can do to combat seasonal depression and help yourself feel better: Open curtains and blinds to allow in as

much daylight as possible. Sitting near a window can increase daylight’s positive effects.

As safety permits, spend time outdoors every day. Even on cloudy days the effect of daylight can be beneficial.

Eat a well-balanced diet that provides recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals to maintain energy. Limit con-sumption of starchy and sweet foods.

Get physical activity 30 minutes a day, three times a week.

Stay involved with hobbies, church and social activities and friends to prevent feelings of isolation that winter can bring.

KITCHEN KORNER By Joann Kocak

Happy 2019 to all of you! After all the cooking and baking of special goodies for Christmas, I am going to give you a couple of good and delicious recipes from one of my favorite cookbooks - THE FOUR INGREDIENT COOKOOK. I bought it at a garage sale, and it is one of the best buys I ever made! Quick and easy recipes, and also delicious and tasty. Here goes: BUSY DAY CHICKEN 2 to 3 lbs chicken pieces 1 C rice, uncooked 1 package dry onion soup mix 1 can Cream of Celery soup Place rice in a greased casserole with chicken on top. Sprinkle with onion soup. Mix celery soup and two cans water. Pour over the above. Bake covered at 325 degrees for 2 hours. Serves 4 to 6. FRUIT COCKTAIL SALAD 1 (17 oz) can fruit cocktail, with syrup 1 (3 oz) package strawberry Jello 1 (3 oz) package cream cheese, softened & cut up 1 (8 oz) carton Cool Whip Heat fruit cocktail with juice and Jello to boiling point. Remove from heat. Add cream cheese and stir until it melts. Fold in Cool Whip. Place in serving container and refrigerate. P.S. I would also like to thank all of the readers who say they enjoy reading this column and trying the recipes. I am glad to hear that some of the recipes have now become favorites in your home as they are in mine. Happy cooking/baking in 2019!
