Physiotherapists of the World Unite IPSA is the International Physiotherapy

Students' Association. Various countries participate - UK, Germany, Switzerland and Norway being the long-standing. ones, but recently interest has been shown from India, Thailand and Turkey.

Any CSP member can become involved, furthering the international relations that IPSA was established to promote. The Association provides the opportunity to understand physiotherapy in other countries, experiencing their different approach, methods of treatment, culture and so on, not to mention their social life! It provides contracts for elective placements abroad and even postgraduate job opportunities, as well as long-standing friendships.

The main vehicle of this activity are the summer schools - for which any CSP student member can apply.

The following report is from the Swiss IPSA Summer School that took place in August.

Put together three British, three West German, two Norwegian, one Swedish and one Hungarian physiotherapy students, and an ex-military bus and you have the beginning of the 1990 Swiss summer school.

The bus was necessary because this was the first 'travelling' summer school - and we certainly did travel. Starting in Lausanne (near Geneva), we were welcomed by the organisers and a 'get to know each other' party - see photograph.

During the two weeks we attended lectures/demonstrations on the Maitland concept, stress incontinence (by a lecturer who spoke little English and therefore compensated by miming!), functional kinetics, the structure of the Swiss physiotherapy organisation, the Brugget concept, and Cybex-isokinetics.

We also visited the Red Cross Museum in Geneva, a multiple sclerosis clinic, the University Hospital of Zurich to see the burns unit and the orthoses/prostheses workshop, an SGM clinic (healing with the aid of Christianity), and the Bern Institute of Anatomy - where we saw numerous 'pickled' limbs.

In between the physiotherapeutic activities, time was spent sightseeing - including a walk through an alpine glacier, lakeside barbecues, sunbathing (in the tropical heat!), and eating (Swiss cheese and chocolates) and drinking (the 'IPSA') wine).

physiotherapy and civilisation, in a log cabin in the Swiss Alps, where we lived primitively for two days walking and climbing, and of course eating and drinking.

We ended the fornight with a 'farewell' party in a castle neat Bern - guess what - eating and drinking.

The route of the trip took us t o Lausanne, Geneva, Mantana, Lucerne, Zurich, the Alps, Langenthal and Bern.

The accommodation varied from sleeping in military bases, a five-star youth hostel, and the terraces of a football pitch!

All-in-all we had a great time, experienced the Swiss lifestyle and Swiss physiotherapy, and our thanks go to all who made the opportunity possible. Everyone of you has the same chance to have as an unique and interesting experience, just wait for the summer school application forms to arrive at your school in March and apply!

It's well worth it.

Salford Hosts Summer School European students were able to sample

Salford life when they signed on at the College of Technology in July.

The College's School of Physiotherapy department was chosen to host this year's IPSA summer school in the UK.

Students in the school raised some f2,000 so that their guests, from Norway, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden, were treated to an action-packed fortnight.

Well-known physiotherapists were drafted in for a series of lectures, and visits to local hospitals and industry were also on the agenda. Away from work, the weekend was spent hiking in the Peak District.

The school was planned by second year students, Gaynor Jarvis, Sarah Weipers and Kay Bradley.
