ABOUT THE TOWN OF HOMOSASSA, FLORIDA

Seventy percent of Homosassa’s citizens are aged 45 or over, contributing to a median age of 58. Considering that the median age for Citrus County is 53 and that the median age for Florida is 39, it is clear that Homosassa is an “older” community. Age is the most important dimension of population in that it relates to service needs. The older composition of Old Homosassa is one reason for the goals of pedestrian connectivity and local community facilities being identified in “visioning” meetings. Homosassa’s recent population growth rate is smaller than that of Citrus County and Florida. This smaller growth rate is largely responsible for the retention of Old Homosassa’s character. It is anticipated that the future sewer lines, projected to be installed by 2004, and the nearby availability of the Suncoast Parkway is already bringing increased population growth to the area.

• Population as of April 1, 2010: 13,791 (United States Census Bureau)

• Area: According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 7.8 square miles (20.1 km2) is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 km2), or 6.30%, is water.

Location:

Homosassa is located on the gulf coast of central Florida and sits on the bank of the Homosassa River.

Homosassa is located in southwestern Citrus County, to the west of U.S. Routes 19 and 98 (Suncoast Boulevard). The CDP extends west on both sides of the Homosassa River to a network of marshes and islands that lead to the Gulf of Mexico. The original settlement of Homosassa is located on the south side of the Homosassa River, 3 miles (5 km) west of Homosassa Springs by either West Fishbowl Drive or West Yulee Drive. The Homosassa River is a spring fed river that meanders west to the Homosassa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Brief History of Homosassa:

Old Homosassa is an area rich in history. Its varied habitat and natural features, combined

With a history of different cultures has made Old Homosassa the unique community it is today.

The first inhabitants were Native Americans. Archeological research indicates that Citrus County

Was occupied by pre-historic aboriginal people for 12,000 years prior to the arrival of Spanish

explorers.

Although Hernando De Soto explored the area in the 16th century, it was the passage of the

Armed Occupation Act of 1842 that spurred development. The act stated that a 200,000-acre

area south of present-day Gainesville was open for settlement. This law stipulated that one

hundred and sixty acres would be given to any head of family or single man over eighteen who was

able to bear arms, could live on the land in a house fit for habitation during five consecutive years

and cultivate at least five acres.

William Cooley took advantage of this opportunity offered by the Federal government. Cooley and

his neighbors found the Act’s incentives appealing and submitted numerous applications to settle

the land. As a landowner, merchant, pioneer, shipper of red cedar and the area’s first Justice of the

Peace, Cooley played a prominent role in the settlement of Homosassa. Attractions:

On Florida's Gulf Coast, near the southern end of what we call the Big Bend, Homosassa serves as home to several state parks including Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, where you can view manatees from an underwater observatory. At the Yulee Sugar Mill State Park in Homosassa, you can visit a sugar mill used to supply troops during the Civil War. In the nearby Citrus County seat of Inverness, don’t miss the historic county courthouse, now more than 100 years old. It recently underwent a complete restoration and continues to look wonderful today.

Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Meet a manatee up close, face-to-face, under water, without even getting wet. Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a showcase for Florida's native wildlife in a natural setting of woods and wetlands. Stroll along the Wildlife Walk to view black bears, foxes, river otters, bobcats, key deer and hundreds of birds. Endangered species include a Florida panther, Red wolves, and two Whooping cranes. Wildlife Encounter programs focus on snakes and other native animals. Pontoon boats from Visitor Center to the wildlife park.

Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park

This site was once part of a thriving sugar plantation owned by David Levy Yulee. Yulee was a member of the Territorial Legislative Council, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate after Florida statehood. The most imposing feature of the plantation was the sugar mill, located near the Homosassa River. The mill operated for 13 years producing sugar, syrup and molasses which were used to make rum. The mill was abandoned during the Civil War and Yulee's plantation home, located down the river, was burned. The plantation and mill never recovered from the war. The park still contains the remnants of the once-thriving 5,100-acre sugar plantation: a forty-foot limestone masonry chimney, iron gears and a cane press. The steam-driven mill operated from 1851 to 1864 and served as a supplier of sugar products for southern troops during the Civil War.

The park is located in the small town of Homosassa, which is located about 3 miles west of the city of Homosassa Springs. The site offers a picnic pavilion, restrooms facilities, tables for picnicking and grills.
